Easter End Of Day Report 04 10 09

As we approach the Easter holiday, it is a good time to reflect on exactly what it is that we Christians are celebrating.

Today, on Good Friday, we think about the Cross and the sacrifice paid for our sins; the amazing love that took our place; and the grace we have been given. That kind of sacrifice is almost impossible to imagine. The suffering that took place there, voluntarily for us, is beyond the comprehension of a culture that says “Live for today and for yourself.” At a time when superficial, selfish and exploitative relationships have become the norm for so many people — as evidenced by all-time-high rates of divorce, domestic abuse, depression and suicide — we would do well to reflect more often on God’s grace for us.

We see a small glimpse of that type of sacrificial love every day in the service of our courageous men and women in uniform, who sacrifice their todays for our tomorrows. We see it in the firefighters and policemen who are trained to risk their lives to save strangers. Through their deeds we see that life truly is precious and worthy of protection, each person made in the image of our Creator.

As Christians we believe that Jesus’ death destroyed the barriers between man and God. We believe that He died so that we may be brought close enough to Him to choose Him. Others, however, follow a god who demands that they seek their own death and the deaths of others so that they may receive salvation. What a contrast!

On Easter morning, we do not gather to remember a martyr. We come together to worship the risen Son of God. With Christ’s resurrection, Christians have confidence in a caring Creator, rather than in the chaos of the cosmos. We have confidence in a glorious future, rather than in the finality of the grave. It is this confidence that sustains us in times of trial and tribulation. Why do we have such confidence? Because “It is finished.” Christ’s atoning work on the Cross is done, and we are saved!

Ultimately, it is not the birth of a man born into this world that we celebrate; rather, it is His death and resurrection as the living Son of God. If Christ had not risen from the grave and ascended into Heaven, he would have been forgotten as a common criminal whose birthday would have no significance.

Thank God for the Cross and the empty tomb! Keep the faith. Carol and I and everyone at American Values send our love to you and yours.

BREAKING NEWS

It was my intention to bring you only the “Good News” today, but I felt compelled to comment on the news out of Great Britain as well. British intelligence agencies disrupted an Al Qaeda plot and arrested 12 Pakistanis on student visas for allegedly planning an “Easter spectacular” – multiple bombings at shopping centers throughout Manchester, England. I know President Obama has said that we are not at war with Islam, but I wonder if he realizes that many Islamofascists apparently disagree

Is Obama Right?

Earlier this week, I commented on the administration’s politically correct attempts to deny that we are at war against Islamofascism. Well, you can imagine my frustration when I read this headline today: “Judge: Bagram Prisoners Can Challenge Detention.” That would be Bagram, Afghanistan!

Everyone knew what the consequences would be if the ACLU prevailed in its attempts to grant the terrorist detainees at GITMO the same legal rights as U.S. citizens. Well, those consequences are here. The ACLU won and today a federal judge has ruled that prisoners held in Afghanistan can sue in U.S. courts.

In his dissenting opinion in the GITMO case last year, Justice Antonin Scalia warned, “America is at war with radical Islamists. …The game of bait-and-switch [this] opinion plays upon the Nation’s Commander in Chief will make the war harder on us. It will almost certainly cause more Americans to be killed.”

Justice Scalia was right. No serious nation can prosecute a war with lawyers constantly second-guessing every move. But I guess Obama is also right – there is no war on terror. Clearly, we are not acting like a nation at war. Our enemies must be laughing at us.

How much longer before the ACLU demands the Marines starting reading Al Qaeda thugs their Miranda rights on the battlefield – I mean at the crime scene? And once again, I’m left wondering which side the ACLU and the Left are rooting for – America or our enemies?

“Personnel Is Policy”

There is an old saying in Washington that “Personnel is policy.” We should expect a president to appoint individuals who share his ideological perspective and who will act on those shared beliefs. And two recent appointments add a few more pieces to the puzzle when it comes to understanding who Barack Obama is and what he believes.

President Obama nominated Professor Dawn Johnsen to direct the Office of Legal Counsel at the Justice Department. It’s not a high-profile position, but it is a very important one, offering interpretations of federal law to key government offices, including the White House. Johnsen’s views, however, are extreme, especially on abortion.

A former legal director for the pro-abortion group NARAL and the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project, Johnsen once compared pregnancy to slavery. Johnsen filed a brief at the Supreme Court in the 1989 Webster case, stating, “Statutes that curtail abortion choice are disturbingly suggestive of involuntary servitude, prohibited by the Thirteenth Amendment, in that forced pregnancy requires a woman to provide continuous physical service to the fetus in order to further the state’s asserted interest.”

Later on she added, “The argument that women who become pregnant have in some sense consented to the pregnancy belies reality … and others who are the inevitable losers in the contraceptive lottery no more “consent” to pregnancy than the pedestrians “consent” to being struck by drunk drivers.”

Does President Obama believe that pregnancy equals slavery and that getting pregnant is like “being struck by a drunk driver”? Well, he picked her.

Congressional Republicans are furious that Obama, who talks so much of the “need to reduce abortions,” would nominate such a radically pro-abortion extremist. Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) and 44 other House Republicans sent a letter to the White House demanding that Obama withdraw her nomination. Senate Republicans are considering a filibuster.

Now consider the appointment of Harold Koh to be the State Department’s top legal advisor. The former dean of Yale’s Law School, Koh is a leading proponent of applying international law to the interpretation of American law and our Constitution. According to Investors Business Daily, “Koh … submitted an amicus brief to the Connecticut Supreme Court arguing that foreign precedents require recognition of a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.”

In 2004, writing about nations which blatantly disregard international law, Koh came up with his own “axis of disobience,” – Iraq, North Korea and the United States. In 2006, he wrote an article in which he called President George W. Bush the “torturer in chief.”

Everything that is wrong in the world can be fixed by “fixing” America. If only we would follow the rest of the world, peace and love would abound. Clearly, Koh is a card-carrying member of the “Blame America First” brigade, and Obama wants him in a key position at the State Department. What on earth could Koh and our commander-in-chief have in common?

Barack Bows To Saudi King

Every day there is a new embarrassment. Today, when President Obama met King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, our president did a full bow from the waist. This is never done! A U.S. president is never, never supposed to bow before foreign royalty.

Is this another example of sheer ignorance? Is it another signal to the Muslim world? Whether intentional or not, it will be seen by many Muslims as the President of the United States engaging in “submission” to a Muslim leader.

President Bush was pilloried by the Left and the media when he was caught on film holding hands with King Abdullah. But in the Middle East, this is not an unusual custom as it would be here (except in certain San Francisco neighborhoods). Obama’s bow is much worse.

But wait…there’s more. Luis Inacio Lula de Silva, Brazil’s president, recently made headlines for declaring that the global economic crisis was caused by “white people with blue eyes.” How did America’s “post-racial president” react when he met de Silva in London? According to ABC News, as de Silva approached him, Obama said, “That’s my man right here. Love this guy. He’s the most popular politician on earth. It’s because of his good looks.”

Barack Sends His Love – To Mahmoud

You may think it is the first day of spring, but half way around the world in Iran, the mullahs are celebrating New Year’s day. And they woke up this morning to a special gift – a “let’s kiss and make up” video message from the man in the Oval Office.

While Obama was talking to Jay Leno, the White House released the “olive branch” video to Tehran last night. In it, our very bright president makes a promise to the Iranian government, which is composed of Jew haters, Holocaust deniers and murderers of U.S. soldiers. But Obama reassures them by saying, “My administration is now committed to diplomacy … and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community.” And he promises Tehran that he wants a relationship built on “mutual respect.”

Mutual respect? I doubt Obama could ever bring himself to say he respects conservatives or Wall Street or Rush Limbaugh, but he wants to build a relationship of mutual respect with a nuclear weapon-seeking, Holocaust denying, Shiite fundamentalist who is waiting for the reappearance of an Islamic messiah who will return to kill all the Jews and Christians.

The Iranian government-controlled media already refer to our president with vulgar terms comparing him to female genitals. I can only imagine the scorn this latest attempt at appeasement will be greeted with by the Islamofascists in Tehran.

“Washington Gone Wild”

You know it’s been a bad week for Democrats in the White House and in Congress when that’s how the Washington Post headlines its lead editorial, as it did today. In a scathing op-ed, the Post rips into the Democrats’ “shortsighted,” “opportunistic” and “irresponsible” actions of the past few days. In describing the vote in the House to enact a confiscatory 90% tax on certain bonuses, the Post wrote:
“Yesterday, the House had the feel of a mob scene. …The effective confiscation of legally earned and contractually promised payments may well be unconstitutional. …But what executive in his right mind will enter into a deal [with the government] if he or she believes the rules can be changed six months or one year down the road purely on the basis of polls and politicians’ fears?” Distasteful as these bonuses may be under these circumstances, the facts are clear: Democrats created the current bonus system by tinkering with the tax code in 1993 in a ham-handed attempt to “soak the rich,” and Democrats legally protected the bonuses in the “stimulus” bill. Start to finish, this is their mess. They own it.

But, as is almost always the case with Big Government and liberal Democrats, what they are doing to fix it is far worse. Columnist Charles Krauthammer chimed in on the same theme today, noting:
“Even worse are the clever schemes now being cooked up in Congress to retrieve the money by means of some retroactive confiscatory tax. The common law is pretty clear about the impermissibility of ex post facto legislation and bills of attainder. They also happen to be specifically prohibited by the Constitution. We’re going to overturn that for $165 million?”
Get Serious, Please!

Last night, Barack Obama scored another “first” by becoming the first sitting president to sit down with a late-night talk show host, NBC’s Jay Leno. It was the second big event on what oddly looked like a campaign swing through California. But this headline from the New York Post no doubt sums up the feelings of many Americans, “O Yuks It Up On Leno As Economy Burns.”

And while unemployment is up, while millions of Americans are tightening their belts and while retirement accounts are being wiped out, the White House has been hosting regular Wednesday night parties serving up $100-a-pound Waygu beef.

The lack of seriousness at the White House is not going unnoticed. Columnist David Brooks – the New York Times’ token “conservative” – has a scathing column today thrashing the administration for “focusing on the dust bunnies under the bed” as “a tiger sinks its teeth into the world’s neck.”

That “tiger,” of course, is the global economic crisis. But Obama, as Brooks writes, “…has decided to address this crisis while simultaneously tackling the four most complicated problems facing the nation: health care, energy, immigration and education.”

Two weeks ago, I wrote that the president needed to focus his attention on the economy and, hopefully, come up with better ideas than taxing and spending us into oblivion, BEFORE attempting anything else. Given the way the Democrat Congress and the White House bungled the “stimulus” bill and the AIG bonuses, I think it’s time we pull the emergency brake on Obama’s runaway socialist agenda before America faces a major train wreck.

Defensive Already?

Cleary, the Left is feeling defensive. More and more Americans are increasingly concerned about President Obama’s radical agenda, and the president’s poll numbers are falling. The Left is desperate to buoy its base in order to maintain enthusiasm for the tremendous policy battles that lie ahead.

Why have I come to that conclusion? Wednesday, the Office of Obama Propaganda, otherwise known as The Huffington Post, ran a story with this headline: “Obama Would Crush Sarah Palin In 2012.” Sure enough, some outfit has produced a poll showing that just 60 days into his administration, Obama is heavily favored to win reelection by a vote of 55%-to-35% in a hypothetical matchup against Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

Friends, this poll isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Consider this example: In March of 1979, President Jimmy Carter was leading Ronald Reagan by 14 points. On Election Night in 1980, Reagan won by ten points.

But I do find it amusing that the focus of the Left’s frustration, three and a half years from the election, is Sarah Palin. Why not Governors Romney or Huckabee or Sanford or Jindal? What is it about Sarah Palin that still has the Left foaming at the mouth? I think it is fear. Palin is their worst nightmare, and the Left will stop at nothing to tear her down. So, it is continuing the attack from the last campaign, and it will continue to smear her even though the next campaign is three years away.
