Congress Passes Obama’s Budget

The House and Senate essentially rubberstamped President Obama’s budget –a multi-year, multi-trillion dollar blueprint of deficits and debt as far as the eye can see. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that Barack Obama’s budget would add nearly ten trillion dollars to the national debt – doubling the debt in five years and tripling it ten! The Associated Press reported, “President Barack Obama’s budget would produce … more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush’s presidency.” In addition, it contains hundreds of billions of dollars in tax hikes and lays the foundation for nationalized health care.

The vote in the House of Representatives was 233-to-196. Every “Yes” vote in favor of tripling the national debt came from a Democrat. Not one House Republican voted for this budget, and 20 Democrats joined the Republicans in voting “No.” The vote in the Senate was 55-to-43. Every “Yes” vote in favor of tripling the national debt came from a Democrat. Every Senate Republican and two Democrats (Evan Bayh of Indiana and Ben Nelson of Nebraska) voted “No.” That means that the only thing “bi-partisan” about this budget was the opposition to it!

Here a few noteworthy items.

* Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) successfully passed an amendment to block special “reconciliation” rules in the budget process from applying to the administration’s planned carbon “cap and trade” scheme, which I refer to as “cap and tax.” (It’s a massive new tax on energy that may cost every American business and family thousands of dollars a year! Administration officials have told Senate staff that they believe it could tax $2 trillion out of the economy.) What the Johanns amendment means is that the “cap and tax” scheme can be filibustered in the Senate at a later date. Every Senate Republican supported the Johanns amendment, as did 26 Democrats.

* Senators were even more emphatic in their rejection (94-to-3) of President Obama’s idea to limit tax deductions for charitable contributions from successful business owners and families.

* Here’s an additional point to consider. The budget is an important indicator of Washington’s principles and intent, but it is mainly a non-binding outline of what the White House and Congress hopes to do in the years ahead. (And it’s clear there are a lot of big spenders and tax hikers in Congress today!) The real heavy lifting will come later when the White House and congressional leaders propose specific bills and legislation to enact their agenda. We will keep you posted and alert you when these critical issues come up for a vote.

Bad Precedents

When Obama suggested in early February that he wanted to limit executive compensation at companies receiving bailout money, I was worried that it wouldn’t be long before liberals took his idea and ran wild with it. Within 24 hours, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) was talking about extending compensation restrictions to all financial institutions and possibly even to all U.S. companies.

This week the House of Representatives took the first step in that direction by passing H.R. 1664, the “Pay for Performance Act,” by a vote of 247-to-171. “Pay for Performance” sounds innocent enough, but it establishes a very insidious precedent.

H.R. 1664 allows the Secretary of the Treasury and key congressional chairmen (namely Barney Frank and Chris Dodd) to determine whether compensation is “unreasonable or excessive” for all executives and employees at any financial institution that has received TARP funds. Do we really want Tim Geithner, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd deciding how much to pay the secretary at the front desk or the clerk in the mail room? And what happens to these companies when large numbers of employees decide they don’t like Barney Frank’s evaluation of their performance? Thanks to Big Government, these companies will be unable to retain a competent workforce and may become dependent on the government’s largess, just like welfare.

But this is what happens when liberal politicians think they know better than the business owners who run their own companies. This is what happens when Big Government sticks its big nose in the free market. And if we establish the principle that taxpayer subsidizes allow the government to set salaries, what about asset depreciation or other business-friendly tax breaks? Aren’t those all forms of government subsidy?

“Capitalism Will Be Different”

A few weeks ago, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on the Charlie Rose Show, “I think capitalism will be different.” This week, President Obama fired the head of General Motors and the government is now seeking to restructure its board of directors. Yes, capitalism has changed alright. I’m still waiting to hear that President Obama is also sending a pink slip to the president of the United Auto Workers union, but I won’t hold my breath.

Meanwhile, Geithner renewed the government’s call this week for even more power over American industry. During testimony in the House of Representatives in defense of his institutional takeover plan, Rep. Donald Manzullo (R-IL) challenged Geithner, asking, “Do you realize how radical your proposal is?” Geithner responed, “It’s not radical. . .” But Manzullo shot back, “You’re talking about seizing private businesses and you don’t consider that radical?”

Today’s Washington Post reports that while Geithner served as head of the New York Federal Reserve Bank working “to solve narrow mechanical issues in the derivatives market, [Geithner] missed clear signs of a catastrophe in the making. …Although Geithner repeatedly raised concerns … he and the Federal Reserve system did not act with enough force to blunt the troubles that ensued.” Geithner admits, “We’re having a major financial crisis in part because of failures of supervision.”

Talk about rewarding failure! I’ve often said that the best way to get promoted in government is to mess up big. So, right under Geithner’s nose, major New York banks and institutions blew up, and this guy gets promoted and is now asking for even more power. This is the same guy who can’t even handle Turbo Tax! But don’t think for a second that if you make a mistake on your taxes that you will qualify for a “Geithner tax amnesty.”

And here’s an example of how Big Government is working to punish success. East Bridgewater Savings Bank has no delinquent loans and no foreclosures. It has $135 million in assets and $84 million in deposits. And even in this atmosphere it has turned a profit. Yet, the FDIC has issued the bank a critical rating under the Community Reinvestment Act. Why? Because, according to our government, East Bridgewater Savings Bank is not being risky enough! You can read the story here.

Thoughts On The G-20 Summit

I watched media coverage of the G-20 summit with great interest. While I was concerned about what policies might come out of the London gathering, I was equally concerned about the politics – especially the class warfare rhetoric. Did you see the mobs? The media tried to pass them off as just normal folks angry about the economy. It was in fact the far Left – anti-war groups, Muslim activists, anarchists, radical socialists. There was even a banner that read “Abolish Money!” Now that’s a strategy.

Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more of this here in America. Taxpayer-funded groups like ACORN are working hand-in-hand with labor unions to stage protests, like staging sit-ins in banks, “liberating” homes from foreclosure, and driving buses in front of the homes of AIG executives. But their efforts are fanning the flames of envy, fueling hatred and fear. Many AIG executives and employees have received death threats and other disgusting messages. Some have taken to hiring private security guards to protect their homes and families.

In fact, there is a shocking report today in Politico about a recent White House meeting between bank CEOs and the president about compensation. As the executives were explaining the need to pay their best and brightest well, President Obama shut down the discussion, telling them, “Be careful how you make those statements, gentlemen. The public isn’t buying that. My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.”

Perhaps Obama’s comments were just a polite PR suggestion. But given Obama’s well-known connection to ACORN, some might see his comment as a warning about as subtle as a dead fish on your door step. By the way, this meeting occurred on the same day that GM’s Rick Wagoner was in Washington meeting with officials at the Treasury Department, where he told to “step aside.” At least the banking executives got out of town with their jobs.

The media and liberal politicians continue to promote the myth that “salvation” will come from Big Government. We know that America will only come through this because of you! The only way we get out of this mess is if investors and business owners and employees are rewarded for their hard work and willingness to take risks.

In the days and weeks ahead, we will be fighting hard to defend free enterprise and promote sound policies that will grow the economy, not the government.

Capital Prayer Alert

Spring has finally arrived in Washington. The gray and gloom of winter has slowly given way to the bright colors of spring in the form of crocus, daffodils and cherry blossoms. Interestingly, there were many in the electorate who thought they voted for a new season in politics, a clean break from what they saw as a gloomy era of partisanship. They thought they were going to get something bright, clean and fresh like the new season. Instead, what has arrived in the halls of Washington is a revved up version of partisanship moving along in fast forward to change the foundations of American society.

Those who predicted that the incoming administration would claim centrist ground have been proved wrong. From big ticket spending priorities and unimaginable national debt to government control of financial institutions, from a weak foreign policy to the promotion of a radical abortion position, the new president flits from one issue and venue to another pronouncing sweeping political changes that must be made NOW. You get the impression they don’t want us to have the time to examine the details of any of it lest we catch on to the wholesale effort to remake America. The initial warm glow is over, and in its place are the red hot choices that our elected officials must make, and in short order.

Pray for those who serve in the House and Senate and are in a position to put their stamp of approval or disapproval on the administration’s ambitious plans. Ask God to grant them insight, wisdom and boldness to ask the right questions. Prompt them to be creative in shedding light on the consequences of today’s decisions on tomorrow’s taxpayers, our children and grandchildren. Ask our Heavenly Father to raise up among them some heroes who would buck the prevailing political winds. May they be articulate and engaging as they give voice to our shared values.

Finally, pray that those who see themselves as elected to keep our country safe from outside forces and well grounded in the values that have served our country well will create opportunities to examine the fine points of the sweeping changes that are planned. Pray for time to look for, consider and evaluate unintended consequences.

The week between Palm Sunday and Easter is a time when Members of Congress are in recess and many will spend all or part of that time in their home states and districts. There will be town meetings, open office hours and various event settings where these elected officials will be present to listen to the voters. There have been times in recent years, during the debate over immigration “reform” for example, when Washington officeholders got an earful when they went home and returned to Washington with a different take on an issue that looked very different from the rarefied atmosphere of the nation’s capital.

One of the most effective ways to influence officeholders is with convincing facts – the number of jobs that will be lost in your company or community because of skyrocketing energy costs, how long business owners will wait to even think of new hiring based on increased employer health insurance costs, the effect of the departure of experienced leadership in local financial institutions as the federal government exerts more control, etc. The case can be made in person or in writing, but it must be made.

Pray for the will and discipline to make your case to those in a position to vote in Washington. They may be uninformed or wrongly informed about the long-term ramifications of critical votes they are about to make. Ask God for insights to illustrate your points effectively. Pray that your words and facts would be given a fair hearing.

Your prayers for our country, its leaders and the challenging road ahead can make a difference!

GM: Government Mafia

It’s been said that dealing with Big Government is like dealing with the mafia – both operate by their own rules and there’s a high price to pay for dealing with either. In recent days, we witnessed the government arbitrarily change rules and impose confiscatory taxes on contracts it had previously approved. If you’re a business owner or a corporate CEO desperately trying to manage a struggling industry, we got another example of the cost of doing business if you turn to the Feds for help.

General Motors CEO Richard Wagoner was in Washington Friday to explain his plan to turn the company around after receiving billions of dollars in federal loans. At the meeting, he was asked to “step aside.” Now, after risking nearly $20 billion in taxpayer money, and with both Chrysler and GM asking for $20 billion more, the government is suggesting that bankruptcy may be the end result after all.

One could certainly make the argument that Wagoner should be fired. But is that really the government’s decision? Anyone who thinks the government can do a better job should consider the government’s track record with public education or the Post Office or the IRS. Regardless, GM’s CEO has been forced out, but what about the unions – what concessions are they making now?

And what else is government doing to help the struggling auto industry? Not much. In fact, it’s adding to the burden! The Transportation Department just announced a new increase in fuel efficiency standards, meaning that car manufacturers are going to have to revamp their assembly lines and retool factories in the middle of an economic downturn. The administration’s proposed carbon “cap and trade” scheme would be devastating to Detroit. In addition, liberal bureaucrats in California want to tell you what color car you can drive. Believe it or not, in order to save the planet from global warming, the California legislature may ban black paint on cars because the black paint absorbs heat and people use their air conditioners “too much” to cool down their cars.

By the way, the government mafia isn’t just muscling in on businesses – it’s doing the same thing to states. South Carolina’s conservative Governor Mark Sanford has repeatedly told Washington that he does not want the government’s “stimulus” money because of the onerous conditions and demands that come with it. Undeterred, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan told USA Today, “Let me be clear. We’re going to take care of the children of South Carolina.” Shouldn’t that be left to the parents and people of South Carolina, rather than Washington bureaucrats who think they know better?

Muslim Affirmative Action?

Over the weekend, news broke that various “community groups” are urging the Obama Administration to hire more Muslims to key positions in the government. The Los Angeles Times reports that J. Saleh Williams, program coordinator for the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association, “sifted through more than 300 names” and forwarded a book of 45 resumes to the White House. Evidently, the White House is eager for the vetting help. The effort was “bumped up two weeks ahead of schedule because White House officials heard about the venture.”

The Times quotes Abdul Malik Mujahid of the Muslim Democrats, saying “Muslims are not looking for handouts. We’re just looking for equal opportunity and inclusiveness.” Not to mention a little influence. A spokesman for the Council on American Islamic Relations didn’t mince words, saying, “We’re hoping that once [Attorney General] Eric Holder puts the [Justice] department in order and places people in different positions, we can reestablish what were very positive relations [with the FBI] in our 15-year history.” You may recall that the FBI terminated its “very positive relations” with CAIR after it was declared an unindicted co-conspirator in the government’s case against the Holy Land Foundation.

I remember the hyperventilating in Washington when it was learned that the Bush Administration made an effort to hire graduates of Regent University Law School, which was founded by Pat Robertson. Leftwing groups warned that America was on the verge of a theocracy and that the “separation of church and state” was under assault. I’m not hearing much concern about the “separation of church and state” today from those groups.

Lights Out!

I don’t know if you participated in Earth Hour this weekend, but I couldn’t help being struck by the irony as I read a news report about the event this morning. According to the Associated Press, “Time zone by time zone, nearly 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries joined the event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund to dim nonessential lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.”

Throughout recorded history, mankind has struggled to harness natural resources and human ingenuity to better our lives. From the discovery of fire to electricity, we have sought to conquer darkness. Now, so-called “progressives” are eager to turn out the lights and plunge society back into another Dark Age by capping emissions from fossil fuels and even putting a cap on human beings. Last week I reported the comments of a leading environmental guru in Great Britain who declared, “Population growth, plus economic growth, is putting the world under terrible pressure.” His solution is to reduce England’s population by 30 million people.

Those of us who believe in common sense, and who don’t see our fellow man as some sort of virus infecting the planet that must be eradicated, need to speak up. We must help our politicians “feel the heat and see the light” before the Left paralyzes our economy with radical environmental policies.

Welfare For Jihadists?

The Obama Administration is the “gift that just keeps on giving.” National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair, speaking about those prisoners at Guantanamo Bay (GITMO) who are likely to be released in the United States under new policies adopted by Obama, pointed out that the prisoners would have to get some sort of welfare to help them start their new lives in the good old US of A. Director Blair apparently thought about this quite a lot and concluded, “We can’t put them out on the street.”

It must be very hard for our enemies to fully understand American liberals. Try to put yourself in their shoes for a moment:

First, you are captured on the battlefield where you are trying to kill U.S. soldiers. Then you are imprisoned at GITMO and immediately provided expert medical attention and better nutrition than ever before. Soon lawyers from some of Washington’s most prestigious law firms offer to represent you free of charge.

Then a president is elected who went to a “church” for 20 years whose pastor loved to shout “God D— America” from the pulpit. Finally, you are told that the president intends to release you inside the country you dream will be destroyed some day, and the Director of National Intelligence wants you to be paid a stipend by those dreadful infidel taxpayers so that you can adjust to your new life. And just last week, that same president was floating the idea of taking away some health benefits from the soldiers who captured you!

While I ponder the meaning of all this tonight, I intend to stop by Arlington National Cemetery for a reality check.

Terror On The Border

In past reports, we have documented the terror on the U.S./Mexican border – 8,000 deaths in the past two years and hundreds of beheadings in a vicious war being waged by brutal drug lords. It is spilling over into American communities, and the Obama Administration is dragging its feet in responding. Today’s Washington Times should prod them considerably.

The Times interviewed Michael Braun, a former assistant administrator and chief of operations at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), in its shocking front-page report today. According to Braun, the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah is working hand-in-hand with Mexican drug smugglers. For now, Hezbollah is using drug money to help finance terror operations in the Middle East.

But, Braun warns, “They [Hezbollah and the drug lords] work together. They rely on the same facilitators. One way or another, they are all connected. They’ll leverage those relationships to their benefit, to smuggle contraband and humans into the U.S.; in fact, they already are.” Today, it’s drugs and money. Tomorrow, terrorists and bombs.

As I have often stated in the past, border security is homeland security. Neither should be a partisan issue, left/right issue, Republican/Democrat issue. Terrorists don’t ask to check voter ID cards before committing their atrocities. Unfortunately, there is a very stark contrast between the two parties on both issues, and, today, liberal Democrats have total control in Washington.

Another Win!

It’s not often conservatives can celebrate a victory in Washington these days, but we won one today. There are reports that the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee, after being thoroughly shamed and embarrassed, has relented and will be donating the $100,000 it received from Bernie Madoff to a victims’ trust. In previous reports we noted that Madoff was a major donor to the Democrats – giving 88% of his personal campaign contributions to Democrats, while 89% of the contributions from employees at his company went to Democrats.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to call the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee as we requested Wednesday. Your action made the difference!

Another Withdrawal

Another week has gone by and another Obama nominee has withdrawn his name from consideration for public service. Jonathan Cannon, nominated to be deputy director of the EPA, bowed out of the process this week after questions arose about America’s Clean Water Foundation. Cannon had served on the foundation’s board, but the foundation shut down after a 2007 EPA audit charged it with gross mismanagement of taxpayer funds.

The foundation received a $25 million grant from the EPA to study environmental risks at meat processing plants. But, according to the Los Angeles Times, “EPA auditors questioned the foundation’s accounting for almost all that money and alluded to allegations of embezzlement.”

Whoever is responsible for vetting President Obama’s nominees needs to withdraw!

Media Notice

We’ve had a busy and productive week making the case for our values in the media! On Monday, Politico featured an op-ed I had written about our misguided policies at GITMO. Today, we have a double-feature! posted a column I wrote about the mainstream media’s “willful blindness” as to the root cause of so much of the violence and terrorism around the world. It’s evident when Ted Turner calls Al Qaeda in Iraq “patriots” and when Chris Matthews accuses pro-lifers of being terrorists.

And, in my weekly Human Events column, I offer some more thoughts on the audacity of the radical environmentalist movement. Whenever there is a crisis, real and imaginary, the Left’s instinct always is to presume that people are the problem.

Democrat Divisions

As congressional Democrats take up President Obama’s massive $3.6 trillion budget, many of them are reaching for the Maalox. Consider some of today’s headlines:

* “Obama Tries to Unite Democrats On Budget Plan” –Washington Post

* “Dem Factions Curb Obama Budget” — Washington Times

* “Democrats vs. Democrats” — Politico

They have good reason to be worried. The Congressional Budget Office has warned that Obama’s budget will add nearly $10 trillion to the national debt in ten years. The Associated Press wrote, “President Barack Obama’s budget would produce … more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush’s presidency.”

We are being lectured by socialist countries, including the communist Chinese, about excessive spending. This week, the Czech president of the European Union blasted Obama’s spending, saying, “The U.S. is repeating mistakes from the 1930s, such as wide-ranging stimuluses, protectionist tendencies and appeals… All these steps, their combination and their permanency, are the road to hell.”

In a rare moment in Washington, the political reality and the economic reality appear to be temporarily aligning. Congressional Democrats have read the CBO report and some know that they can’t spend us into oblivion. They also know that they are the majority party today partly because of voter outrage against fiscal irresponsibility in Washington. In reacting to Obama’s budget, one Senate Democrat said, “We’re going to go back and rework this whole thing.”

But that’s not stopping the White House and its radical leftwing allies. Obama is mobilizing his campaign apparatus to intimidate moderate Democrats worried by his socialist spending. Politico reports today that, major labor unions and other leftwing outfits are running TV ads attacking moderate-to-conservative Democrats for standing in the way of their “progressive agenda.”

TAKE ACTION: Please contact your elected representatives in Congress and urge them to oppose Obama’s outrageous budget. Click here to quickly and easily send a message to Capitol Hill urging your senators and representative to stop Obama’s spending.

The Republican Response

President Obama recently accused congressional Republicans of having no alternatives. That was a completely false statement. During the debate on the so-called “stimulus” bill, House Republicans drafted their own plan. But Democrats shot it down. Republicans have also offered an alternative plan to address the mortgage crisis.

Now, as Congress prepares to deal with President Obama’s outrageous $3.6 trillion budget, which raises taxes and takes the first steps toward socialized health care, House Republicans today unveiled their own alternative, while Senate conservatives, such as Iowa’s Charles Grassley, are advocating a spending freeze.

While the Left is divided and fighting itself, conservatives need to be united behind serious alternatives rooted in conservative values and principles. There are many good conservatives on Capitol Hill fighting hard every day for the values we cherish. Unfortunately, liberal Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, control nearly 60% of the votes in the House and Senate.

That means we’re not going to win many votes in Washington in the short term. But that doesn’t excuse us from working hard now to win the hearts and minds of voters across the country so we can retake Congress in 2010. Only by winning elections can we hope to stop Obama’s lurch to the Left and restore common sense to Congress!

Obama’s Slumping Support

Pollster John Zogby released a survey this week which found that fewer than half of the respondents felt President Obama was doing a good job. According to the Zogby poll, 49% said President Obama’s job performance was “excellent or good,” while 50% said it was “fair or poor.” While Zogby’s findings clearly stand out as unusually low compared to most polls, it does track the general trend for President Obama — downward.

Pollster Scott Rasmussen, one of the most accurate in the business today, has recorded a nine-point drop in the president’s approval rating and a 13-point increase in his disapproval rating since his inauguration. That’s a negative swing of 22 points in two months.

Like the president’s deficit spending, his polling numbers are unsustainable, pointing to the increased likelihood of a Republican resurgence in next year’s congressional elections – IF we can raise the funds to make it happen!

What Was That?

Last night, President Obama held a nationally televised White House press conference in prime time to discuss the state of the nation’s economy. Given the extent of the economic crisis and the serious challenges confronting the nation, the president probably should be holding a lot of press conferences. I think this was his second. Unfortunately, the president said very little last night that was new or different from what he has been saying for the past 60 days.

What did catch my attention, however, was the president’s absolute commitment to raising taxes. When pressed to explain his desire to limit deductions for mortgage interest and charitable contributions, President Obama responded:

“I think this was a good idea. I think it is a realistic way for us to raise some revenue from people who benefitted enormously over the last several years. …They’ll still be well-to-do. And, you know, …in some cases those who are more fortunate are going to have to pay a little bit more.”
You’ll notice there’s no discussion of cutting government spending. Instead, the president says folks who have “benefitted” are “fortunate,” as if they won the lottery. I know many business owners consider themselves fortunate, but I also know they worked very hard to get where they are today. And that hard work does not deserve to be punished by Big Government because Barack Obama thinks some people “benefitted” too much from their own effort.

We’re hearing a lot about greed these days from Obama and liberal Democrats in Congress. During the campaign, candidate Obama criticized as “greedy” folks who objected to his tax hikes. What about the envy of Big Government? If you’re “fortunate” enough to be “well-to-do,” Obama wants to punish you by raising your taxes. And if you’re generous with your money, he’s going to punish you again by limiting your charitable deductions!

By the way, the president’s thin skin was on full display last night – you may have noticed that the TOTUS wasn’t there. What’s that, you ask? Teleprompter Of The United States. Sensitive to the criticism of his “crutch,” President Obama opted to trade in the TOTUS for the “Obamatron” – a jumbo flat screen TV in the back of the room.

But don’t worry — TOTUS is doing fine and has recently launched a blog to keep you posted on daily events. You can check out the latest TOTUS postings here.

Is That it?

A recent Pentagon report looked around the world to identify the countries at the greatest risk of collapsing, thereby creating the greatest risk to the United States. Two nations topped the list. The first was Pakistan — an unstable nation with a large radical Muslim population; it borders Afghanistan; some of its territory is a safe haven for Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists; it has bad relations with its neighbor India; and it possesses nuclear weapons.

The other nation that attracted the Pentagon’s concern was Mexico. Yes, the deteriorating situation south of the border has gotten so bad that the Pentagon recently warned that we should begin planning for the “sudden collapse” of the Mexican state. Eight thousand people have been killed in the past two years as the Mexican government has fought to reclaim whole cities and towns from vicious drug lords. Hundreds of people have been beheaded.

The situation is spilling over the border. Phoenix, Arizona, is the now the kidnapping capital of America. Arizona’s Attorney General testified before Congress last week, begging for help and warning, “The threat posed to American communities from this trafficking cannot be overestimated.” Texas Governor Rick Perry has requested 1,000 National Guard troops be sent to the border.

What is Washington doing? Yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced a “very robust movement of personnel” — about 350 people, many of them analysts and liaison officers, but no troops. Meanwhile, the Justice Department has launched a civil rights investigation against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has been aggressively enforcing immigration laws.

I wonder how much of the “stimulus” bill’s infrastructure money was directed for the border fence.

Culture of Corruption

Democrat Charlie Rangel, chairman of the House committee that writes our nation’s tax laws, is in so much trouble for evading taxes that the liberal New York Times has called on him to step down. It seems that Rangel has been sharing some tips with his Democrat buddies on the Ways and Means Committee.

Several media reports in recent days have noted that Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), the second highest ranking Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee (whose members write our tax laws), very likely has been claiming tax credits that he is not entitled to.

While holding a California driver’s license, being registered to vote in California and representing California’s 13th Congressional District, Stark has been claiming a $3,800 homestead tax credit on his $1.6 million mansion in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The Los Angeles Times reports that Maryland authorities recently revoked a tax break that Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) had been claiming on his Maryland home.

Once again we see why liberal Democrats love higher taxes – they don’t pay them!

But here’s the real outrage of the day. According to the Washington Times, the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee is still holding on to $100,000 in campaign contributions from convicted conman Bernie Madoff.

While the government is frantically trying to recover Madoff’s assets, while thousands of individuals and charities are struggling to rebuild from the wreckage of Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, while liberal politicians are demanding AIG workers return legally contracted bonus money that they earned and voting for confiscatory taxes on legally contracted bonuses, the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee is keeping Madoff’s stolen loot!

Call the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee at (202) 224-2447 and demand the Democrats return Madoff’s money.

End Of Day Report Gary Bauer 03 24 09

Charging The Hill Once Again

In this environment, I am spending more and more time on Capitol Hill fighting off bad ideas and working hard to promote good ones. I spent much of the day on Capitol Hill with Pastor John Hagee delivering petitions of support for Israel to key members of Congress.

The timing of Pastor Hagee’s trip to Washington could not have been more fortunate – coming just days after President Obama’s video-taped message of “mutual respect” to Iran’s Islamofascist regime. Given the administration’s intent to reach out to the Holocaust-denying dictator in Tehran, it is critical for friends of Israel to redouble our efforts now.

Our opponents do not hesitate to take to the streets to condemn Israel, so we will walk the halls of Congress to rally support for the Jewish state.

The Left’s Radical Agenda

Liberals and their media allies like to label conservatives and Republicans as “radicals” and “extremists,” when in fact liberals are the ones who are constantly pursuing a radical Big Government agenda across the board. Take the radical environmentalist movement. Everyone wants clean air and clean water. But conservatives draw the line at Big Government power grabs and massive taxation and regulation of the economy based on suspect science. This week, the Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step toward implementing a major goal of the Left’s agenda, and we’re gearing up for a major fight.

Fox News reports that on Monday the EPA transmitted to the White House a report declaring that “global warming is a threat to public health and welfare,” necessitating regulation of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide. The report lays the foundation for the administration’s “carbon cap and tax scheme,” which for the first time will impose massive taxes on the production of energy — new taxes and new regulations that will have a devastating impact on the economy, job creation and your way of life.

The legislation has one purpose – to punish industries that rely on fossil fuels so Big Government can force the marketplace to accept “green” or alternative energy. But 86% of America’s energy is produced from coal, oil or natural gas – all of it subject to “cap and tax.” Any petro-product – plastics – will be subject to “cap and tax.” The auto industry will be devastated by “cap and tax.”

Clearly, the American economy cannot thrive on alternatives, which today provide only 14% of our power. Nuclear power could help, but try getting the liberals to go along with that idea. In fact, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) doesn’t even want solar panels in the desert! Meanwhile, the Left is trying to impose a massive new tax that strikes at the heart of our economy.

Now, if you think this radical assault on capitalism and productivity in the name of global warming is alarming, consider the “reasoning” among elite “green gurus” across the pond. Here’s an excerpt from Britain’s Sunday Times:

“Jonathon Porritt, one of [Prime Minister] Gordon Brown’s leading green advisers, is to warn that Britain must drastically reduce its population if it is to build a sustainable society. …Porritt said: ‘Population growth, plus economic growth, is putting the world under terrible pressure. Each person in Britain has far more impact on the environment than those in developing countries, so cutting our population is one way to reduce that impact.’” People and productivity are the planet’s enemies. Unbelievable!

Great Britain has 61 million people. How many people does Porritt believe Britain must “cut” in order to achieve sustainability? Thirty million! How do you accomplish that? As the aging population dies off, you promote anti-family policies that discourage bringing new life into the world, like China’s one-child policy and abortion-on-demand.

The Left’s radical environmentalist agenda is a bizarre ideology based on anti-capitalism and anti-humanity sentiments. It seeks to subject the freedom of individuals to prosper to the whims of an all-powerful state. It’s been called a “watermelon movement” – green on the outside and red on the inside – the last refuge of radical socialists since the downfall of the Soviet Union.

Campaign for Working Families will fight the Left’s radical agenda – whether it includes job-killing taxes and regulations or an assault on the sanctity of life. But in order to restore commonsense values to our government, we must win elections!

Summit Ministries

The need to engage our children, who are the targets of liberal indoctrination by the media, the cultural and educational establishments, has been a recurring theme in these daily reports. How do we help instill and pass on our cherished values to our children and grandchildren when they go off to college and are exposed to hostile environments and radical ideologies? That’s where Summit Ministries comes in!

Summit Ministries is an educational Christian ministry that helps teens learn how to develop their faith, understand ideas and answer major challenges to their faith. Leaders such as James Dobson, Chuck Colson and Josh McDowell have endorsed Summit Ministries, and I’m proud to do so as well.

This summer, Summit is offering a series of conferences in Colorado, Tennessee and Virginia. These academic camps will prepare Christian teens for the challenges they will confront in college, in the workforce or at any stage of life. To find out more about these dynamic student conferences, please visit the Summit Ministries website at
