Easter End Of Day Report 04 10 09

As we approach the Easter holiday, it is a good time to reflect on exactly what it is that we Christians are celebrating.

Today, on Good Friday, we think about the Cross and the sacrifice paid for our sins; the amazing love that took our place; and the grace we have been given. That kind of sacrifice is almost impossible to imagine. The suffering that took place there, voluntarily for us, is beyond the comprehension of a culture that says “Live for today and for yourself.” At a time when superficial, selfish and exploitative relationships have become the norm for so many people — as evidenced by all-time-high rates of divorce, domestic abuse, depression and suicide — we would do well to reflect more often on God’s grace for us.

We see a small glimpse of that type of sacrificial love every day in the service of our courageous men and women in uniform, who sacrifice their todays for our tomorrows. We see it in the firefighters and policemen who are trained to risk their lives to save strangers. Through their deeds we see that life truly is precious and worthy of protection, each person made in the image of our Creator.

As Christians we believe that Jesus’ death destroyed the barriers between man and God. We believe that He died so that we may be brought close enough to Him to choose Him. Others, however, follow a god who demands that they seek their own death and the deaths of others so that they may receive salvation. What a contrast!

On Easter morning, we do not gather to remember a martyr. We come together to worship the risen Son of God. With Christ’s resurrection, Christians have confidence in a caring Creator, rather than in the chaos of the cosmos. We have confidence in a glorious future, rather than in the finality of the grave. It is this confidence that sustains us in times of trial and tribulation. Why do we have such confidence? Because “It is finished.” Christ’s atoning work on the Cross is done, and we are saved!

Ultimately, it is not the birth of a man born into this world that we celebrate; rather, it is His death and resurrection as the living Son of God. If Christ had not risen from the grave and ascended into Heaven, he would have been forgotten as a common criminal whose birthday would have no significance.

Thank God for the Cross and the empty tomb! Keep the faith. Carol and I and everyone at American Values send our love to you and yours.

BREAKING NEWS

It was my intention to bring you only the “Good News” today, but I felt compelled to comment on the news out of Great Britain as well. British intelligence agencies disrupted an Al Qaeda plot and arrested 12 Pakistanis on student visas for allegedly planning an “Easter spectacular” – multiple bombings at shopping centers throughout Manchester, England. I know President Obama has said that we are not at war with Islam, but I wonder if he realizes that many Islamofascists apparently disagree

The White House Wizard

Some claim he is a better orator than Ronald Reagan. Others compare him to “The Great Emancipator,” Abraham Lincoln. His most committed followers talk of him in worshipful terms – as a political messiah. They are all wrong. After carefully reviewing President Obama’s speeches to adoring audiences abroad in recent days, where he announced his goal of a world with no nuclear weapons, I finally realized where I had seen this man before. His first gig was in that great movie with Judy Garland. He is the “Wizard of Oz”!

Look behind the curtain – he pulls ropes, manufactures greats sounds, makes lights flash and presto, tyrants tremble, enemies surrender and war disappears. But as we learned in the movie, the booming voice behind the curtain that so frightened Dorothy was an illusion – it came from a little man who counted on fear to rule his subjects in Oz. He had no power at all, only “smoke and mirrors.”

While our president announced his commitment to a nuclear-free world, the maniac running North Korea tested a long-range missile, which we can safely assume won’t be carrying warheads filled with confetti. Our response was to draft a really strong resolution, which the cowards at the United Nations promptly rejected.

In underground bunkers all over Iran, the scientists serving the mullahs continued to work furiously to obtain the nuclear weapons which are to be used in service of Allah. Our response is to pressure Israel to create a Palestinian state – while doing nothing serious about stopping the tyrants in Tehran from developing their “Islamic bomb.”

The president thinks the enemy is a particular type of weapon. But nuclear weapons ended World War II and preserved a rough peace throughout the Cold War. The enemy is in Tehran and Damascus, and has allies who are in Venezuela and North Korea. They have enablers in Moscow and Beijing. All of them see the little man behind the curtain who loves to apologize for his country but hasn’t yet figured out that the only thing in 2009 that prevents the world from sinking into tyranny and slavery is the strength and will of America.

What Do The People Think?

In the course of his European tour, President Obama has made a lot of statements related to America, our history and our national security. Yesterday, I reported that President Obama told an audience of Turkish Muslims that Americans don’t consider our country to be a Christian nation. But a recent poll by Newsweek found that at least 62% of Americans do think of the United States as a Christian nation. Is President Obama speaking for only 38% of the nation when talks overseas?

President Obama talks about a nuclear-free world, and when rogue dictators fire off missiles, he talks some more. According to a new Rasmussen poll, “Fifty-seven percent (57%) of U.S. voters nationwide favor a military response to eliminate North Korea’s missile launching capability. …just 15% of voters oppose a military response while 28% are not sure.” The support for tough action is bi-partisan: 66% of Republicans, 52% of Democrats and 54% of Independents.

He also spent much of his time apologizing for America. Speaking in France, President Obama said that there had been “times when America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.” According to another Rasmussen poll, only 37% of American voters agreed with that statement. When asked if it would be better for the world if Europe became more like America, 54% said “Yes,” while just 22% said the world would be better off if America became like Europe. Is President Obama speaking for the 22% of Americans who want us to be more like Europe?

Obama’s Pro-Abortion Extremism

While President Obama likes to talk about “reducing the need for abortion,” his administration is taking steps to implement one of the most extreme proposals imaginable – repealing conscience protections for medical professionals. Make no mistake about the outcome of this action: religious hospitals, doctors and nurses will be forced to perform abortions or other procedures that violate their values.

This issue clearly exposes the pro-abortion extremism of Barack Obama and the Left. A woman’s “right of conscience” is protected to the extent that she can decide whether or not her unborn baby lives or dies. Now the pro-abortion Left wants to take away the right of conscience from doctors and nurses who want no part in the destruction of innocent human life. That is not “pro-choice” – it is pro-abortion.

TAKE ACTION: As required by law, the administration is accepting public comments before it takes further action on this outrageous proposal. The comment period ends on April 9th. Please respectfully share your thoughts with the Department of Health and Human Services by visiting http://www.regulations.gov or by sending an E-mail to proposedrescission@hhs.gov.

Democrat Divisions

As congressional Democrats take up President Obama’s massive $3.6 trillion budget, many of them are reaching for the Maalox. Consider some of today’s headlines:

* “Obama Tries to Unite Democrats On Budget Plan” –Washington Post

* “Dem Factions Curb Obama Budget” — Washington Times

* “Democrats vs. Democrats” — Politico

They have good reason to be worried. The Congressional Budget Office has warned that Obama’s budget will add nearly $10 trillion to the national debt in ten years. The Associated Press wrote, “President Barack Obama’s budget would produce … more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush’s presidency.”

We are being lectured by socialist countries, including the communist Chinese, about excessive spending. This week, the Czech president of the European Union blasted Obama’s spending, saying, “The U.S. is repeating mistakes from the 1930s, such as wide-ranging stimuluses, protectionist tendencies and appeals… All these steps, their combination and their permanency, are the road to hell.”

In a rare moment in Washington, the political reality and the economic reality appear to be temporarily aligning. Congressional Democrats have read the CBO report and some know that they can’t spend us into oblivion. They also know that they are the majority party today partly because of voter outrage against fiscal irresponsibility in Washington. In reacting to Obama’s budget, one Senate Democrat said, “We’re going to go back and rework this whole thing.”

But that’s not stopping the White House and its radical leftwing allies. Obama is mobilizing his campaign apparatus to intimidate moderate Democrats worried by his socialist spending. Politico reports today that MoveOn.org, major labor unions and other leftwing outfits are running TV ads attacking moderate-to-conservative Democrats for standing in the way of their “progressive agenda.”

TAKE ACTION: Please contact your elected representatives in Congress and urge them to oppose Obama’s outrageous budget. Click here to quickly and easily send a message to Capitol Hill urging your senators and representative to stop Obama’s spending.

The Republican Response

President Obama recently accused congressional Republicans of having no alternatives. That was a completely false statement. During the debate on the so-called “stimulus” bill, House Republicans drafted their own plan. But Democrats shot it down. Republicans have also offered an alternative plan to address the mortgage crisis.

Now, as Congress prepares to deal with President Obama’s outrageous $3.6 trillion budget, which raises taxes and takes the first steps toward socialized health care, House Republicans today unveiled their own alternative, while Senate conservatives, such as Iowa’s Charles Grassley, are advocating a spending freeze.

While the Left is divided and fighting itself, conservatives need to be united behind serious alternatives rooted in conservative values and principles. There are many good conservatives on Capitol Hill fighting hard every day for the values we cherish. Unfortunately, liberal Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, control nearly 60% of the votes in the House and Senate.

That means we’re not going to win many votes in Washington in the short term. But that doesn’t excuse us from working hard now to win the hearts and minds of voters across the country so we can retake Congress in 2010. Only by winning elections can we hope to stop Obama’s lurch to the Left and restore common sense to Congress!

Obama’s Slumping Support

Pollster John Zogby released a survey this week which found that fewer than half of the respondents felt President Obama was doing a good job. According to the Zogby poll, 49% said President Obama’s job performance was “excellent or good,” while 50% said it was “fair or poor.” While Zogby’s findings clearly stand out as unusually low compared to most polls, it does track the general trend for President Obama — downward.

Pollster Scott Rasmussen, one of the most accurate in the business today, has recorded a nine-point drop in the president’s approval rating and a 13-point increase in his disapproval rating since his inauguration. That’s a negative swing of 22 points in two months.

Like the president’s deficit spending, his polling numbers are unsustainable, pointing to the increased likelihood of a Republican resurgence in next year’s congressional elections – IF we can raise the funds to make it happen!

Charging The Hill Once Again

In this environment, I am spending more and more time on Capitol Hill fighting off bad ideas and working hard to promote good ones. I spent much of the day on Capitol Hill with Pastor John Hagee delivering petitions of support for Israel to key members of Congress.

The timing of Pastor Hagee’s trip to Washington could not have been more fortunate – coming just days after President Obama’s video-taped message of “mutual respect” to Iran’s Islamofascist regime. Given the administration’s intent to reach out to the Holocaust-denying dictator in Tehran, it is critical for friends of Israel to redouble our efforts now.

Our opponents do not hesitate to take to the streets to condemn Israel, so we will walk the halls of Congress to rally support for the Jewish state.

The Left’s Radical Agenda

Liberals and their media allies like to label conservatives and Republicans as “radicals” and “extremists,” when in fact liberals are the ones who are constantly pursuing a radical Big Government agenda across the board. Take the radical environmentalist movement. Everyone wants clean air and clean water. But conservatives draw the line at Big Government power grabs and massive taxation and regulation of the economy based on suspect science. This week, the Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step toward implementing a major goal of the Left’s agenda, and we’re gearing up for a major fight.

Fox News reports that on Monday the EPA transmitted to the White House a report declaring that “global warming is a threat to public health and welfare,” necessitating regulation of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide. The report lays the foundation for the administration’s “carbon cap and tax scheme,” which for the first time will impose massive taxes on the production of energy — new taxes and new regulations that will have a devastating impact on the economy, job creation and your way of life.

The legislation has one purpose – to punish industries that rely on fossil fuels so Big Government can force the marketplace to accept “green” or alternative energy. But 86% of America’s energy is produced from coal, oil or natural gas – all of it subject to “cap and tax.” Any petro-product – plastics – will be subject to “cap and tax.” The auto industry will be devastated by “cap and tax.”

Clearly, the American economy cannot thrive on alternatives, which today provide only 14% of our power. Nuclear power could help, but try getting the liberals to go along with that idea. In fact, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) doesn’t even want solar panels in the desert! Meanwhile, the Left is trying to impose a massive new tax that strikes at the heart of our economy.

Now, if you think this radical assault on capitalism and productivity in the name of global warming is alarming, consider the “reasoning” among elite “green gurus” across the pond. Here’s an excerpt from Britain’s Sunday Times:

“Jonathon Porritt, one of [Prime Minister] Gordon Brown’s leading green advisers, is to warn that Britain must drastically reduce its population if it is to build a sustainable society. …Porritt said: ‘Population growth, plus economic growth, is putting the world under terrible pressure. Each person in Britain has far more impact on the environment than those in developing countries, so cutting our population is one way to reduce that impact.’” People and productivity are the planet’s enemies. Unbelievable!

Great Britain has 61 million people. How many people does Porritt believe Britain must “cut” in order to achieve sustainability? Thirty million! How do you accomplish that? As the aging population dies off, you promote anti-family policies that discourage bringing new life into the world, like China’s one-child policy and abortion-on-demand.

The Left’s radical environmentalist agenda is a bizarre ideology based on anti-capitalism and anti-humanity sentiments. It seeks to subject the freedom of individuals to prosper to the whims of an all-powerful state. It’s been called a “watermelon movement” – green on the outside and red on the inside – the last refuge of radical socialists since the downfall of the Soviet Union.

Campaign for Working Families will fight the Left’s radical agenda – whether it includes job-killing taxes and regulations or an assault on the sanctity of life. But in order to restore commonsense values to our government, we must win elections!

Summit Ministries

The need to engage our children, who are the targets of liberal indoctrination by the media, the cultural and educational establishments, has been a recurring theme in these daily reports. How do we help instill and pass on our cherished values to our children and grandchildren when they go off to college and are exposed to hostile environments and radical ideologies? That’s where Summit Ministries comes in!

Summit Ministries is an educational Christian ministry that helps teens learn how to develop their faith, understand ideas and answer major challenges to their faith. Leaders such as James Dobson, Chuck Colson and Josh McDowell have endorsed Summit Ministries, and I’m proud to do so as well.

This summer, Summit is offering a series of conferences in Colorado, Tennessee and Virginia. These academic camps will prepare Christian teens for the challenges they will confront in college, in the workforce or at any stage of life. To find out more about these dynamic student conferences, please visit the Summit Ministries website at http://www.summit.org.

Terror Attack On Israel Fails

A terrorist effort to kill hundreds of Israelis in Haifa Saturday was narrowly avoided. A 200-pound car bomb, packed with ball bearings intended to rip through flesh, malfunctioned near a crowded shopping mall. The bomb was intended to go off following the end of the Jewish Sabbath, when the mall would have been filled with families. Thank God for this miracle.

But I can’t help but think how the reality of what was planned completely contradicts President Obama’s naïve and dangerous foreign policy. Since taking office, President Obama has bowed to Iran, did his first major TV interview with an Arab network, pledged a billion dollars in aid to the Palestinians in Gaza and has been hypercritical of Israel. Yet, in spite of the president’s “engagement and diplomacy,” the enemies of the United States and Israel did everything they could this weekend to kill countless civilians. The chances are very good that this bomb was constructed with some form of help from Iran. This is how the Islamic Republic responded to Obama’s video “olive branch” of “mutual respect.”

If the attack had been successful, I have no doubt that Secretary of State Clinton would have expressed her sorrow and President Obama would have said that terrorism was unacceptable. But in short order, the dead Israelis would have been forgotten and the world, including our White House, would have continued its constant demands that Israel make more concessions and give up more land for peace. Fortunately, this bomb failed. Unfortunately, the next one and the one after that probably won’t. No amount of appeasement will stop these thugs.

What’s So Funny?

I don’t know how many of you happened to tune in to Obama’s 60 Minutes interview, but it was a surreal event. President Obama was talking about the precarious position of the United States and the rest of the world as a result of the global economic crisis. He was warning that we still faced the possibility of “an even more destructive recession or potentially a depression.” And through it all, the president just kept on laughing – as though he had forgotten that this was 60 Minutes and not Jay Leno. The president’s odd demeanor got the attention of CBS’s veteran journalist Steve Kroft. At one point during the interview, Kroft asked the president of the United States: “You’re sitting here. And you’re – you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money.’ …Are you punch-drunk?”

That question may well be another “first” for President Obama. It’s certainly the first time I recall a president being asked if he was “punch-drunk.” But President Obama brushed it off with a laugh, saying, “No. No. There’s gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day.” Maybe so. But I suspect, rather than “gallows humor,” most Americans would appreciate steady leadership that is focused on the crisis at hand. Instead, Obama is jumping from one massive Big Government initiative to the next, while admitting that the economy stands on the brink of “an even more destructive recession or potentially a depression.”

No Joke

After we had “gone to print” late Friday afternoon, the Congressional Budget Office issued its analysis of President Obama’s budget, and it blew away the White House’s estimates concerning the full impact of the president’s budget on the national debt. “Red Ink Red Alert” was the headline to a weekend editorial in the Washington Post. “Obama Sticker Shock” is how the Wall Street Journal described the CBO report today. If you thought spending was out of control during the last eight years, consider this from the Associated Press, “President Barack Obama’s budget would produce $9.3 trillion in deficits over the next decade, more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush’s presidency.”

Senator Judd Gregg, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, responded to the CBO report, saying, “The practical implications of [Obama’s budget] is bankruptcy for the United States. There’s no other way around it. If we maintain the proposals which are in this budget…this country will go bankrupt.” So far the administration has been cavalier in its reaction, dismissing the CBO report and indicating that it has no plans whatsoever to cutback on spending. That leaves only one option: massive tax hikes on everyone – and that’s nothing to laugh about!

While we’re on the subject, there has been a lot of debate in Washington about whether our policies at GITMO are creating terrorism. I offered my thoughts on that subject in a column today at Politico, and the answer may surprise you!
