Poll Position

New polling out of Iowa is sending shock waves throughout the political establishments of both parties. ADes Moines Register poll of likely caucus goers finds Bernie Sanders surging to within seven points of Hillary Clinton.

Thirty percent of Iowa Democrats back the Vermont socialist compared to 37% for Clinton. Fourteen percent of Democrats back Vice President Joe Biden.

Pollsters note that Hillary has lost one-third of her support and see another potential upset in the making. Among young Iowa Democrats, Sanders beats Clinton by 23 points. He leads among likely first-time caucus goers by 12 points. It was this kind of enthusiasm that Obama successfully channeled to overcome the Clinton machine in 2008.

Among Republicans, the Des Moines Register poll found Donald Trump leading with 23%, followed by Dr. Ben Carson at 18%. No other candidate received double-digit support.

A Monmouth University poll finds Trump and Carson tied at 23%, followed by Carly Fiorina at 10%. No other candidate received double-digit support. Think about those results — 56% of Iowa Republicans are backing non-politicians for president.

On a related note, a new Quinnipiac poll finds that 71% of Americans are dissatisfied with the direction of the country. As more and more Americans feel that politics as usual has failed them, it is not surprising that anti-establishment candidates on the left and the right are surging.

Lives Matter

Deputy Darren Goforth of the Harris County, Texas, Sheriff’s office, was gunned down Friday night in what can only be described as an assassination. Goforth was shot in the back by Shannon Miles, who then stood over his body and pumped more shots into him.

Investigators believe Deputy Goforth was targeted simply “because he wore a uniform.” Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman condemned the killing as “a cold-blooded execution,” adding, “We found no other motive or indication that it was anything other than that.”

At a press conference, Sheriff Hickman and the Harris County district attorney lashed out at the left and the rhetoric of the “black lives matter” crowd.

“We’ve heard ‘Black Lives Matter,’ ‘All lives matter,'” Sheriff Hickman said. “Well, cops’ lives matter too. So why don’t we just drop the qualifier, and just say ‘Lives Matter.'” He is right. But, sadly, I predict there won’t be any marches a year from now for Deputy Goforth like there were for Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

By the way, another shooting has predictably fallen off the radar screen. The shootings by Vester Flanagan, a black, homosexual radical who gunned down two Virginia journalists, is quickly being forgotten because the shooting doesn’t follow the left’s preferred narrative.

The shootings in Virginia and Texas indict the left, and media are making sure that such a narrative doesn’t gain any traction. For example, ABC News reportedly has a 23-page manifesto from Vester Flanagan, but it won’t release whole thing. Why not? Presumably because it is full of left-wing rantings and cannot be used to embarrass conservatives.

Media Manipulation

Columnist Mark Steyn reviewed the headlines from major U.S. newspapers that reported on the shootings of two Virginia journalists. As you might expect, the headlines were totally devoid of any information that would inform readers of what really happened.

In other words, they were manipulated to avoid printing the kind of information that would normally dominate headlines when it helps the left and hurts conservatives.

As we reported yesterday, both the Charleston shooting and the Roanoke shooting were done by racial bigots, one a white racist and one a black racist.

Vester Flanagan, the Roanoke shooter, was also a gay rights extremist, by the way. To the American media, these facts mean the story is to be buried as quickly as possible and reported in the most vague manner possible.

The London Telegraph, however, reports that when Flanagan’s apartment was searched, police found a gay pride flag — the same flag that was projected in lights on the White House after the Supreme Court’s decision redefining marriage.

Does anybody think there will now be full-throated calls from every corner of America to ban that flag? Increasingly, it is a symbol of hatred — hatred against Christians and long-standing societal norms. But don’t hold your breath.

Bring It On, Hillary!

Desperate to change the subject from her email scandal and flailing campaign, Hillary Clinton went on the attack yesterday, comparing pro-life conservatives to Islamic terrorists.

“Now, extreme views about women we expect that from some of the terrorist groups. . . But it’s a little hard to take coming from Republicans who want to be president of the United States,” Clinton said.

Don’t miss the irony here, friends. Hillary is part of the leftist culture in America that uses every verbal summersault possible to avoid making any connection between Islam and Al Qaeda, Hamas, ISIS, etc. But it has no problem connecting American conservatism to those groups.

Of course, the reality is that the Obama/Clinton Administration has barely lifted a finger to combat the religious persecution committed by the Islamic movement that is raping women and selling them into the sex trade. That battle has been led by conservatives.

The Obama Administration has gone into court suing American businesses that say the Muslim hijab, which many view as a symbol of submission, violates their dress code. It is conservatives who say Muslim practices that belittle women should not be imported into the U.S.

It is the left that says American women should get used to going into a ladies’ room and finding a man using the facilities because he feels like he is a woman. It is conservatives who say this is a violation of a woman’s right to privacy.

It is Hillary Clinton and the left who says it should be legal for people to abort babies because they are little unborn girls. It is conservatives who argue that sex-selection abortion is abhorrent and should not be permitted.

Of course abortion was most likely the issue that Hillary Clinton was alluding to in her comments. To the left, there is no more important right for women than the right to destroy innocent human life. Yet conservatives who champion the sanctity of life are somehow equivalent to the barbaric marauders of ISIS.

If Hillary Clinton wants to have a debate about extreme views, bring it on!

But whoever wins the 2016 Republican presidential nomination must be someone with the guts to fight back against this kind of outrageous rhetoric because this is exactly the kind of campaign that will be run by the left against the GOP candidate.

No amount of compromise or seeking common ground or desire for “adult conversations” will prevent the left from running a slash and burn smear campaign.

Military Brass Oppose Deal

Two weeks ago, Big Media and the left made a big deal over the fact that three dozen retired admirals and generals signed a joint letter supporting the president’s nuclear deal with Iran. Yesterday, more than five times that number sent a letter to Congress urging opposition to the deal.

One hundred and ninety retired admirals and generals told congressional leaders that removing sanctions on Iran threatened Middle East peace. They warned that far from cutting off all pathways to a bomb, the deal “allows all the infrastructure the Iranians need for a nuclear bomb.” They wrote that the agreement, with its secret side deals, was “unverifiable.”

They are right on all counts.

In addition, Dennis Ross and Gen. David Petraeus, both of whom served in the Obama Administration, wrote a joint op-ed in the Washington Post this week. According to Ross and Petraeus, the deal allows Iran to expand its nuclear program, adding that it treats Iran “like Japan or the Netherlands — but Iran is not Japan or the Netherlands when it comes to its behavior.”

They state that “deterrence is the key” to making sure the Iranians do not attempt to develop nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, deterrence doesn’t seem to be in the president’s vocabulary. Every time he insists that our only options are this terrible deal or war, he makes it clear that the military option is off the table.

But Ross and Petraeus have a solution:

“While some may question whether we would act militarily if the Iranians were to dash to a bomb, no one questions whether the Israelis would do so. . . . Providing the Israelis the MOP [bunker busting 30,000-pound massive ordnance penetrator bombs] and the means to carry it would surely enhance deterrence.”

All Lives Matter

No doubt you have heard about the terrible shooting of two journalists and a woman they were interviewing in southwest Virginia. The murderer, Vester Lee Flanagan II, cited the Charleston shootings by Dylann Roof as his motivation. But he is just like Roof in many ways.

Both Flanagan and Roof are haters. Both wanted a race war. Both murdered innocent people. Both were evil. Roof sat with church members and studied the Bible with them before he murdered them. Flanagan stalked his victims and, just like ISIS, he videotaped his assault to make sure it was seen far and wide.

The murders in Charleston were quickly used by the left to excoriate the South, conservatives and people who support the Second Amendment. That is where the similarities end. Flanagan was black, a homosexual, an over-the-top Obama supporter, who was reprimanded for wearing Obama buttons during his reporting on Election Day.

The president’s statement yesterday said nothing about racial hatred on the left. There was nothing about the left examining its rhetoric to see if it contributed to this tragedy in any way. Just more restrictions on guns.

A few weeks ago we reported on Louis Farrakhan’s speech in Florida calling for ten thousand volunteers to rise up and murder white people. Perhaps Mr. Flanagan was answering Farrakhan’s call to jihad against white people.

This sad event is a reminder that all lives matter — black lives, white lives and, yes, if we are ever to restore respect for the sanctity of all life, even the lives of unborn children.

Bush Blows It

Yesterday I praised Jeb Bush for vowing to fight for clearly conservative judicial nominees. But less than 24 hours later, he demonstrated — not once, but twice — why conservatives have such a hard time accepting him.

First, during a discussion of border security, Bush stated that a building a wall along the border was “not practical” and “not conservative.” Jeb Bush’s campaign has $120 million in the bank. How can you have such resources and not find advisors who understand the mood of conservatives?

The last thing Republican voters want to hear is why the border cannot be secured. We have been told to send our sons overseas to secure the borders of other countries, but not our own? We passed a law in 2006, signed by a President Bush, declaring we would build a secure border fence. Where is it?

The corporate and establishment wing of the party keeps coming up with excuses as to why we cannot live in a country with secured borders. No wonder Donald Trump keeps expanding his lead!

But that wasn’t Bush’s only self-inflicted wound.

As you may know, Donald Trump had a run-in with Jorge Ramos of Univision, the Spanish language TV network. Trump was attempting to hold a press conference, but Ramos stood up and began shouting questions at Trump, even though he had not been called on. Trump repeatedly asked him to sit down and wait, but Ramos refused. So he was escorted out of the room.

When Jeb was asked to comment on Ramos’ ejection, Bush sided with Ramos, saying that journalists deserved more respect. Ramos was not acting like a journalist, he was disrupting the press conference. He is a left-wing operative, whose daughter works for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Yet Bush thinks he deserves more respect?

How can he be so out-of-touch?

Don’t Muzzle Carly

CNN is hosting the next Republican presidential debate on September 16th, yet Carly Fiorina may not be permitted to participate. The candidates with the most momentum after theFox News debate are Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina. She should be in the CNN debate.

The reason she will likely be excluded is that most of the polls CNN is using to determine a candidate’s ranking were conducted before the first debate. But at this stage, those polls are irrelevant.

I can think of many reasons why CNN would not want an articulate, conservative woman on stage during prime time. But I have no idea why the Republican National Committee is going along with this.

I strongly recommend the RNC step in and address this situation.

Bad Intel?

Today’s New York Times reports that the Pentagon’s inspector general has launched an investigation into the possible manipulation of intelligence data from Iraq.

No, this has nothing to do with Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction and George Bush’s decision to go to war. This investigation is attempting to determine whether “skewed intelligence assessments” are providing “a more optimistic account of progress” against ISIS.

That is a shocking revelation.

Most Americans know the campaign against ISIS has been ineffective, largely because President Obama has overly constrained the military. A recent CNN poll found that only 28% of Americans thought the war against ISIS was going “very well or somewhat well” and 62% disapproved of Obama’s handling of ISIS.

The Times report suggests that the situation could be even worse than we realize.

But consider this: Right now Congress is evaluating an ill-conceived deal that makes the Islamic Republic of Iran a threshold nuclear state and removes virtually all of our economic leverage against that rogue regime.

Members of Congress are being pressured to support this deal because, in spite of Iran’s well-documented history of cheating, President Obama confidently asserts, “If Iran cheats, we can catch them and we will.”

We did not discover North Korea’s nuclear cheating. Sadly, today’s New York Times report is a good indication of just how unreliable the intelligence on Iran is likely to be.

Who Likes The Deal?

In recent days, a number of Democrats, including Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid, have endorsed the nuclear deal with Iran. They might want to reconsider, based on who else is endorsing it.

Ali Larijani, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, praised the deal Sunday as a “good achievement” for Iran. Keep in mind who is advising him.

Yesterday, Hossein Sheikholeslam, Larijani’s adviser for international affairs, was asked whether Iran was moderating its position toward Israel. He told reporters, “Our positions against the usurper Zionist regime have not changed at all; Israel should be annihilated and this is our ultimate slogan.”

This is important to remember, because President Obama and his allies insist that this deal will strengthen the hand of so-called “moderates” in Iran. But they are not in charge, and the hard-liners appear to be embracing Obama’s deal.

Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad also hailed the deal yesterday during an interview with Hezbollah’s television network, saying that it would boost Iran’s role internationally, which would help Syria. “The power of Iran is the power of Syria, and a victory for Syria is a victory for Iran,” Assad said. “We are on the same axis, the axis of resistance,” he added.

As more and more Democrats line-up to support Obama’s disastrous deal with Iran, Republicans in Congress are vowing to keep up the pressure. They plan to introduce additional sanctions measures, even if this deal is approved.

Why? Because it will force Democrats to declare their position on the record again and again. It will also send a signal to banks and businesses eager to do business with Iran that U.S. policy toward the Islamic regime could change on a dime come January 2017, perhaps dissuading many from making such a risky investment.

Bush & The Supreme Court

Kudos to Governor Jeb Bush. He’s had a tough time on the campaign trail lately. There have been doubts about his tone and commitment to conservative values. But he said something yesterday that should encourage conservatives.

During a recent town hall event in New Hampshire, Bush said publicly what he told me and other conservative leaders privately several months ago: That the so-called “stealth strategy” for judicial nominations has failed and his Supreme Court nominees will have “proven records.” Here is Bush’s statement:

“They wander, and you go, ‘How could that be?’ Because we’re in this partisan environment now [and] every one of these appointees, it’ll be a big huge fight. And so, I believe we need to have people of experience, of a proven record, a consistent judicial philosophy that you know because they’ve done it over and over and over again. And then you got to fight like hell to make sure they get passed, and that’s my pledge.”

Bush didn’t say who these wandering justices might be, but conservatives know who they are. David Souter, Anthony Kennedy and, increasingly, John Roberts, who is right most of the time but has been wrong on some really big cases.

Republicans mistakenly adopted the stealth strategy after Democrats savaged Judge Robert Bork. But it rarely works.

Meanwhile, the left always gets its picks right. It is impossible to come up with a single Democratic appointment to the high court in the past 30 years who has not been anything other than a doctrinaire liberal committed to remaking America in the left’s image.

Obama & The Crazies

At a Las Vegas conference last night, President Obama launched into another demeaning attack against his domestic political opponents. Obama told the audience that he was back from his summer vacation feeling “a little feisty” and ready to fight “the crazies” who oppose his agenda. Really?

If the president wants to see crazy, all he has to do is look in the mirror. Given history, it is crazy to believe that a regime like Iran’s, which is committed to a second Holocaust, will be restrained by words on a piece of paper.

It is crazy to think that Cuba, Russia and other enemies can be turned into friends by the charm of our transformational president. It is crazy to believe you can continue to spend trillions of dollars more than you bring in and not face economic collapse.

It is crazy to believe that if someone thinks marriage is between one man and a woman, they are a bigot. It is crazy to think it is okay to butcher baby parts for profit. I could go on.

But when has Mr. Obama ever referred to the mullahs in Tehran as “crazies”? When has he called Castro or Putin crazy? It is sad to see the president once again directing more vitriol toward his political opponents in Washington than the avowed enemies of the United States.

Cancel The Dinner

Chinese President Xi Jinping is coming to Washington next month for a state visit. Part of that trip will involve an official state dinner at the White House.

If we had a president who understood that the world’s thugs are constantly taking the measure of America’s strength, or lack thereof, he would either cancel the invitation or send a very clear message about how he handled the visit.

For example, Obama could bring the Chinese leader in through the back door, past the White House trash, the same way he did to the Dali Lama. He could not provide a state dinner, leave Xi and go upstairs to have dinner with his family like he reportedly did to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. He could cancel the state visit entirely.

Obama could and should do these things because China is pressing us on multiple fronts. Beijing is responsible for massive cyberattacks against the government. China is constantly probing industrial centers and the computers running our infrastructure.

China is aggressively expanding its territory in the South China Sea, threatening other Asian nations and doing next to nothing to rein in its Stalinist ally, North Korea. A formal state visit under these circumstances sends all the wrong messages to China and to our allies.

Democrats Target The Truth

There were big demonstrations outside of Planned Parenthood facilities all over the country this weekend. The protests were organized in response to recent videos exposing Planned Parenthood’s profiteering from the sale of aborted baby body parts. These shocking revelations have revitalized the pro-life movement, while Planned Parenthood is in damage control mode.

But now the left is going on the attack. Faced with evidence of what can only be described as atrocities, Democrats in Congress announced last week that they are going to investigate . . . the group that exposed the atrocities.

Kamala Harris, attorney general of California, has also launched an investigation. She isn’t looking into Planned Parenthood’s practices, but whether the videos are potential violations of state law.

This is typical of the left’s tactics. Rather than recognize reality, it wants to shut down debate.

Obama Endorses Biden, Sort Of

As Vice President Joe Biden ponders his political future, he got a big boost from Barack Obama yesterday. During a private lunch, Biden reportedly received Obama’s “blessing” to run for president. Surely if the president was “ready for Hillary” he could have talked Joe out of it.

But there’s more. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters yesterday that Obama believes picking Joe Biden to be vice president “was the smartest political decision he ever made.”

That might not be an official endorsement, but it’s pretty close.

Meanwhile, a new Rasmussen poll finds that nearly half of voters (46%), including 24% of Democrats, think Hillary Clinton should suspend her campaign until the investigation of her handling of classified material is resolved.

North Korea & Iran

Tensions are rising on the Korean Peninsula. Analysts point to recent incidents in the demilitarized zone and joint U.S., South Korean military exercises as the cause. The real issue is that North Korea is run by a certifiable maniac, the latest in a string of communist dictators.

Here is the main thing to consider: For two decades a series of U.S. presidents from Bill Clinton to George Bush tried to buy off North Korea. They used a variety of half-measures to rein in the Stalinist regime. They gave diplomacy repeated chances.

The result is that 20 years ago we were dealing with crazy people who did not have nuclear weapons. Today we are dealing with crazy people who do possess nuclear weapons. So every U.S. president who has attempted to talk with this rogue state has been part of this failure.

This example is especially relevant now because the West is repeating this charade with Iran. Meanwhile, Iran has been giving North Korea money and North Korea has beentransferring missile and nuclear technology to Iran. There is every reason to believe this alliance will continue to the detriment of peace and security.

Heroes Prevent Slaughter

Just when we begin to despair, we get a reminder of the great reservoir of courage that still exists among the American people. The latest skirmish in the worldwide war against radical Islam occurred last week in the unlikely place of a train traveling from Belgium to France.

A jihadist with an AK-47 had planned on killing hundreds of people. Ayoub El-Khazzani was stopped by three Americans and a Briton. Like Todd Beamer, who said to passengers on Flight 93, “Let’s roll,” Spencer Stone, Alek Skarlatos, Anthony Sadler, and British citizen Chris Norman jumped into action, saving scores of lives.

European authorities said they were watching El-Khazzani for ties to radical Islam. Clearly they were not watching him very well. This morning there is news that French authorities are puzzled by his motives because he denies any interest in terrorism.

So, once again, Europe is in trouble and Americans and a Brit rush to the rescue. Where have we seen this before?

The Donald Is Dominating

Donald Trump continues to dominate the Republican presidential primary. A Reuters poll released Friday found Trump expanding his lead to 32%. Jeb Bush was at 16% and no other candidate received double-digit support. Ben Carson was third at 8%.

Friday evening, Trump held a massive rally in Mobile, Alabama. His campaign had to relocate the planned event from the city’s civic center to a football stadium in order to accommodate the demand. Thirty thousand people reportedly turned out. That means Donald Trump holds the current record for the largest turnout of any campaign event for the 2016 presidential race so far.

Meanwhile, as Hillary’s numbers continue to fall, there is growing concern among Democrats that they may need a “Plan B.” Perhaps “B” for “Biden.”

Tongues were wagging after a reported Saturday meeting between Vice President Joe Biden and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Some speculate that a Biden/Warren ticket, in which the 73 year-old vice president promises to serve only one term, could revitalize the left-wing base of the Democratic Party.

Watching Hillary lose for a second time would be fun, but conservatives should be careful about what they wish for. Polls show that Biden fares better than Clinton in key swing states.

Kristol Cruise

Last week I had the privilege of participating in Bill Kristol’s Alaskan cruise, sponsored by The Weekly Standard. During the event I was a frequent speaker on a variety of panels. I wish GOP leaders could have been there.

There were about 250 people, all successful businessmen and women, and I was surprised by their degree of alienation from the Republican Party. The theme of every question and answer session throughout the week was the same: Why do the Democrats always succeed in advancing their agenda and Republicans have such trouble? They were sick and tired that we are utterly unable to stop the Democrats from pushing the country to the left.

Senator Marco Rubio won a straw poll among the attendees, but many individuals spoke highly of Donald Trump and said they had not ruled him out for one reason: They want to send a message to Washington’s GOP elites.

Media Pile On

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s email scandal continues to grow. Each new day seems to bring a new revelation, and her explanations are falling flat.

For example, even though we now know that Clinton’s unsecured personal server was full of classified information, she has asserted that nothing she received was ever “marked classified.”

Earlier this week, she told reporters, “I did not send classified material, and I did not receive any material that was marked or designated classified.”

As secretary of state, Clinton was fourth in the line of presidential succession. Presumably, she was handling sensitive information from foreign ministers, ambassadors and intelligence officials. As Reutersreports today, some information is “born classified.” As secretary of state, she knew that.

It is difficult to say where this is all headed. Some are pointing out that her husband had to issue apresidential pardon to his CIA director for keeping classified information on his personal computer — precisely what Mrs. Clinton did.

But the media seem to realize there is a serious story here. Consider these headlines from the past few days:

“Hillary Clinton’s Communications Problem May Go Beyond Email,” CBS News, August 19th.

“Government Inquiry Into Clinton Emails Likely To Widen,” National Public Radio, August 19th.

“Judge Says Hillary Clinton’s Private Emails Violated Policy,” Politico, August 20th.
