Pouncing On Pence

Indiana Governor Mike Pence held a press conference today to counter media misinformation about Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Now the same media critics who distorted the law are suggesting that Pence is abandoning the law.

The left claimed that the law created a “license to discriminate.” It did no such thing. The law simply provides a legal defense if a business owner, citing religious objections, refuses service to a customer and is charged with discrimination. There is no guarantee that the court would accept the defense. But the court is required to consider the claim of religious liberty and whether it reasonably applies.

Pence today indicated that he and the legislature want to clarify the media’s misperceptions about the law. The left pounced, claiming that Pence was caving in. That is not true either. The governor has an opinion piece in today’s Wall Street Journal, which you can read here.

“The New Intolerance”

The Wall Street Journal editorial page has its own column today entitled “The New Intolerance.” The Journal writes, “Indiana isn’t targeting gays. Liberals are targeting religion.”

Rush Limbaugh asked on his show today, “Why does the left hate religion so much?” The answer is easy. Faith in God commands the loyalty of millions of Americans over and above the left’s demand that we worship big government.

In last 24 hours, Ben Carson, Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Bobby Jindal, Sen. Marco Rubio, former Sen. Rick Santorum and, to his credit, former Governor Jeb Bush have all expressed their support for the Indiana law, as has Reverend Franklin Graham.

I don’t know how this battle will end, but you don’t have to be a prophet to know this much: Religious freedom is the new battlefield in America and it goes to the heart of our founding — the First Amendment right to practice your faith.

In recent days, several left-wing commentators have mocked conservatives, asking, “What’s the big threat this law is supposed to address?” You have to be willfully ignorant of big government’s massive onslaught against religious liberty to ask such a question.

Obamacare attempted to force Hobby Lobby to subsidize abortion and contraception. The Obama Administration is still trying to force nuns — the Little Sisters of the Poor — to promote abortion.

In recent years, we have seen bakers, florists, photographers, college administrators and high tech executives be fined or fired for their faith. The Supreme Court is likely to impose same-sex marriage on every state of the union. There will likely be unforeseen and far-reaching consequences for radically redefining marriage and the family.

All of this is happening because the demand for tolerance extends to everybody but those who believe in Judeo-Christian values. Men and women of faith are being demonized as bigots and criminals.

More Talks

Media reports strongly indicate that the Iranian nuclear talks have led to an agreement . . . to keep talking. This would be the third extension of these negotiations.

Six weeks ago, Secretary of State John Kerry said it would be “impossible” to extend the talks yet again unless “you really have the outlines of the agreement.” It is doubtful that Kerry really has the outlines of a meaningful agreement.

The reported differences are huge: Iran’s refusal to accept real inspections, Iran’s refusal to surrender its uranium stockpiles and its demand that all sanctions be lifted immediately. Without the first two, any deal is meaningless and lifting all sanctions in exchange for nothing is a non-starter.

Iran is not negotiating in good faith. But don’t take my word for it. Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s Basij force, said this week that “wiping Israel off the map is not up for negotiation.”

Most Americans Doubt Obama’s Deal

Today’s Washington Post reports on a poll that purportedly finds “wide backing for an Iran nuclear deal.” According to its findings, 59% of Americans support an agreement that lifts sanctions on Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear weapons program. Thirty-one percent oppose the deal.

When asked how confident they were that such an agreement would actually prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, only 37% of Americans said they had any confidence at all that it would work, while 59% said they had little or no confidence the deal would prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

Those results are similar to a Pew Research poll released yesterday finding that 63% of Americans do not believe Iranian leaders are serious about limiting Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

I wonder what kind of response the pollsters would have gotten if they had asked this question: “Do you trust Barack Obama, who negotiated a deal exchanging five Taliban leaders for one American deserter, to negotiate a deal restricting Iran’s nuclear weapons program?”

Americans Stand With Israel

President Obama’s tough line against Israel and its newly reelected leader appears to be backfiring. The Post poll also found that 50% of Americans disapproved of Obama’s handling of relations with Israel, while only 38% approved. In addition, only 39% of Americans supported the creation of an independent Palestinian state — the lowest level of support since 1998.

Members of Congress are now telling the White House to back down. Four senators — two Republicans, two Democrats — sent a letter to President Obama yesterday urging him to respect the U.S.-Israel relationship and to stand with Israel at the United Nations.

Politico also reports that last week a dozen House Democrats told White House National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes to stop attacking Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. One Democrat reportedly said, “You want us to go out and say the administration’s got Israel’s back. How are you going to get us to say that when our constituents believe that the administration is stabbing Israel in the back?”

Hillary Lied

Hillary Clinton wasn’t entirely truthful during her March 10th press conference regarding her use of a personal email server for her official government business as secretary of state.

The Associated Press reports that Clinton “e-mailed her staff on an iPad as well as a BlackBerry . . . despite her explanation she exclusively used a personal e-mail address on a homebrew server so that she could carry a single device.”

The cloud of scandal that surrounds the Clintons isn’t going away. The State Department inspector general is now investigating Hillary’s email practices, and Rep. Trey Gowdy announced today that he wants Mrs. Clinton to testify before the House Select Committee on Benghazi “no later than May 1st.”

Deal Or No Deal?

News broke over the weekend that Western and Iranian negotiators had reached a “tentative agreement” regarding Iran’s nuclear program. But reports late last night indicate that the Iranians are now demanding additional concessions.

Iran had agreed to surrender its uranium stockpile to Russia so that it could not be processed into material for a nuclear weapon. Now the Islamic Republic is insisting it be allowed to keep its uranium.

During an interview over the weekend, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the negotiations, saying, “The dangerous accord which is being negotiated . . . confirms our concerns and even worse.”

Netanyahu said the negotiations amounted to “a reward for Iran’s aggression,” and warned that Iran’s ambitions were “dangerous for all of humanity.”

Iranian Defector Blasts Talks

It’s not surprising that Israel’s leader has harsh words for these negotiations. His nation faces an existential threat from a nuclear-armed Iran. But if you question Benjamin Netanyahu’s objectivity, consider what Amir Hossein Motaghi has to say about the negotiations.

Motaghi is the former editor of the Iran Student Correspondents Association. According to various reports, Motaghi was a personal aide to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during the 2013 elections and may have served as his campaign’s communications director. He was in Switzerland covering the nuclear negotiations until he defected over the weekend.

Motaghi says that journalism in Iran is a sham and that the media are heavily censored by the regime. No surprise there. He also blasted the Obama/Kerry team, saying, “The U.S. negotiating team are mainly there to speak on Iran’s behalf with other members of the 5+1 countries and convince them of a deal.”

If a former top campaign aide to the Iranian president says our negotiators are representing Iran’s interests, then Prime Minister Netanyahu is right — this is a really bad deal.

By the way, what explains the impulse of Obama Administration officials to speak in Arabic? This time it is Secretary of State John Kerry. While reportedly shopping for chocolate in Switzerland, Kerry was approached by an individual who told him that friends in Iran are optimistic about a deal. Kerry responded, “Inshallah!,” which means “if Allah wills it.”

Servergate

Well, this was totally predictable: Just like Lois Lerner’s crashed hard drive, Hillary Clinton’s email server has been wiped clean too.

Rep. Trey Gowdy, chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, told reporters Friday that Secretary Clinton’s lawyers failed to provide any new documents in response to a subpoena, even after they had been given a two week extension in order to comply.

Gowdy added, “We learned today, from her attorney, [that] Secretary Clinton unilaterally decided to wipe her server clean and permanently delete all emails from her personal server.”

During her March 10th press conference, Hillary admitted that tens of thousands of personal emails were deleted. But she also acknowledged that she delivered 55,000 pages of emails related to her service as secretary of state after the State Department had requested she hand them over.

That request came near the end of October, so we know the server was cleaned sometime after that, after there were demands for the information contained on the server.

The House of Representatives voted to establish the Benghazi Select Committee on May 8, 2014. As a lawyer, Hillary certainly understood that any information in her possession related to Benghazi was subject to congressional subpoena.

Whether or not Hillary was trying to obstruct the committee may be irrelevant. Legislation she voted for in 2002 created a new criminal offense known as “anticipatory obstruction of justice” — destroying documents in order to frustrate a potential future investigation.

Faith Under Fire

The debate over Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act intensified over the weekend. The radical left is determined to make an example of Governor Mike Pence, a rising conservative star, and shut down this debate as more than a dozen other states are considering similar legislation protecting religious liberty.

Appearing yesterday on ABC’s “This Week,” Pence held his own against former Clinton apologist George Stephanopoulos. The governor denounced the “shameless rhetoric” that has been used to distort the law and accused Stephanopoulos of engaging in it. Rush Limbaugh devoted an hour of his show today to this subject, and praised Pence’s defense of the law.

Just as disturbing as the media’s willful distortions are the threats from some large companies. Major corporations — including Apple, Salesforce and Angie’s List — are essentially accusing Governor Pence and state legislators of resurrecting Jim Crow laws.

They are attempting to extort the people’s elected representatives by threatening to boycott the state. They are demanding that Indiana legislators restrict religious liberty in order to comply with the demands of the radical left and its intolerant agenda. At a time when strong economic growth is still elusive, this pressure is a powerful weapon.

But it is an opportunity for Republicans too. They should tell left-wing corporate bosses to take a hike!

While the GOP supports free markets, lower taxes and less regulation, it also stands for religious freedom and family values. Big business has no more right to dictate the values of Indiana’s families or restrict religious liberty than do unelected left-wing judges!

It can be hard to influence mega-companies like Apple. But Angie’s List may be vulnerable to a backlash. Our family called today to cancel our Angie’s List membership because our faith is more important than saving a few bucks on a home repair. There are competing services available, including a new one launched just today by Amazon.

Crossdressing Gate Crashers?

Washington, D.C., was on edge today after two men, dressed as women, attempted to crash through the gates of the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland. An armed guard shot both men, killing one and critically wounding the other.

Officials were quick to downplay terrorism as a motive. But unless crossdressers crashing the gates of our most sensitive intelligence facilities is more common than I realized, investigators should not eliminate anything until their investigation is complete.

Sellout Sunday?

There is speculation based on the travel schedules of the key figures involved in the Iranian nuclear negotiations that a potential deal could be announced this Sunday. From everything we know, that deal will be a disaster for us and our allies, and a gift for the Iranian regime.

Consider the news just from the past week:

  • The New York Times told us that the Iranians were resisting “any kind of formal ‘framework’ agreement.” In other words, they want as little as possible to be put in writing. The Times adds that this could lead to the Obama White House claiming one thing while Tehran claims something completely different, which happened the last time Obama claimed to have a deal with Tehran.
  • The Associated Press reported that Iran was refusing to permit “snap inspections” of its nuclear facilities by U.N. inspectors.
  • The Washington Post wrote, “The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said that Iran has failed to provide the information or access needed to allay the agency’s concerns about the weapons potential of the country’s nuclear program.”
  • There are reports today that the Obama Administration “may allow Iran to run hundreds of centrifuges” — this is truly unbelievable — at “a fortified underground bunker.”
  • The Iranians are bragging about how much we have conceded. A key Iranian negotiator said this week, “The [West] has withdrawn from its positions compared with the past, otherwise we wouldn’t have stood at this point and stage in the talks at all.”
Responding to the latest revelations, Senator Robert Menendez, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said, “We are not inching closer to Iran’s negotiating position, but leaping toward it with both feet.”

If there is a deal announced this weekend regarding Iran’s nuclear program, by all indications it will be a sellout of U.S. and Israeli security interests. Not surprisingly, such a sellout will only accelerate nuclear proliferation in the Middle East as Arab nations realize that the Obama White House has no intention of reining in Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

    Demonizing Religious Liberty

  • Yesterday we reported that Indiana Governor Mike Pence had signed legislation protecting the religious freedom of business owners. The law is similar to existing federal legislation and the policies of dozens of other states. The tyrants of tolerance were quick to unleash their vitriol.

That fount of wisdom, Miley Cyrus, tweeted, “You’re an a**hole @govpenceIN.” Of course, she didn’t censor her tweet. And she wasn’t the only celebrity attacking the governor. Ashton Kutcher, Montel Williams and Hillary Clinton all weighed in.

The NCAA, which is hosting the Final Four games in Indianapolis next week, got in on the act too. NCAA President Mark Emmert issued a press release saying, “We are especially concerned about how this legislation could affect our student-athletes and employees.” Emmert vowed to “work diligently” to make sure players and visitors to the Final Four “are not impacted negatively by this bill.”

    Give me a break!

Let me reiterate once again what this is NOT about. It is not about denying gay couples the right to marry.

It is about protecting the religious liberty of men and women of faith. It is about making sure that those with strong religious objections are not forced to violate their faith by being compelled to participate in a same-sex wedding.

When it comes to bashing America or accommodating Islam, the left will bend over backwards to demonstrate its tolerance. Yet the left is incredibly intolerant when it comes to traditional Judeo-Christian values.

    Dueling Budgets

  • The House and Senate passed budget blueprints this week. They offer starkly different visions for the future compared to President Obama’s budget. For example:

  • Obama’s budget raises taxes by $2 trillion over the next ten years. The House and Senate budgets do not raise taxes.
  • Even with those higher taxes, Obama’s budget spends so much that it predicts a $600 billion deficit ten years from now. The congressional budgets cut spending and balance in ten years.
  • Obama’s budget assumes Obamacare’s mandates and regulations continue to grow, exerting even more control over our lives. The House and Senate budgets repeal Obamacare.

    Obama’s Bad Deal

After a ten month investigation, the Army formally charged Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl yesterday with two charges: One count of desertion and one count of misbehavior before the enemy. The first charge carries a penalty of five years in prison. The second charge is far more serious and could send Bergdahl to prison for the rest of his life.

These charges make it absolutely clear just how badly the Obama Administration handled this issue. The trade was incredibly unbalanced — five of the worst Taliban leaders in our custody for a known deserter. There was enough known at the time to reach that conclusion. It’s pretty clear which side gained the most from this deal.

Does any of this sound vaguely familiar? It should. We are reliving the Bergdahl episode all over again, except this time the stakes are much higher.

The Bergdahl deal should frame the debate over Obama’s nuclear negotiations with Iran. There was no price (five Taliban leaders) Obama was unwilling to pay to get Bergdahl back and there seems to be no price he is unwilling to pay to cut a deal with Iran.

Let’s not forget that the Bergdahl deal also broke the law by failing to notify Congress that five jihadists were being released from Guantanamo Bay. And now Obama is vowing to end-run Congress yet again when it comes to any deal with Iran.

    The Left-wing Mind

Once again, I am dumbfounded by the bizarre worldview of the left-wing mind. Whether it was the Cambridge cops, Trayvon Martin, Ferguson, Benghazi or Bergdahl, this administration leaps to judgments that defy common sense.

National Security Advisor Susan Rice assured us that Bowe Bergdahl “served the United States with honor and distinction.” Obama called Bergdahl’s parents to the White House for a Rose Garden ceremony in which we were treated to his father speaking in Arabic.

Members of Bergdahl’s platoon believe six of their fellow servicemen died searching for him. They were outraged by that Rose Garden ceremony. The families of those lost heroes did not get that kind of attention and respect.

Yet even with the benefit of hindsight and full knowledge of the charges, State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki insisted yesterday that the Bergdahl/Taliban swap was “absolutely” worth it.

There are rumors that Bergdahl’s attorneys will seek a plea deal to drop the most serious charge and may seek to have his five years in captivity counted as time served. That would be tragic. Good men followed orders and went to their deaths to save a deserter who disobeyed orders.

    Indiana Defends Religious Freedom

Kudos to the Indiana legislature and Governor Mike Pence! This morning, Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to further protect the rights of men and women of faith.

In a nation founded by religious pilgrims, whose founding documents acknowledge that our liberty comes from God, this legislation shouldn’t be controversial. Moreover, the federal government and dozens of states have similar laws.

Sadly, several tech companies, including Salesforce, opposed the legislation and urged Pence to veto it. In fact, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff warned Pence that if he signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, Salesforce would “dramatically reduce our investment in Indiana.”

As unelected judges have forced same-sex marriage on state after state, we have seen bakers, florists, photographers, college administrators and high tech executives lose their jobs and their livelihoods because they refused to violate their deeply held beliefs. The Indiana legislature passed this law so that no Christian business owner would be required to participate in a same-sex wedding.

Now, I assume that Salesforce initially invested in Indiana because the state has the kind of pro-business policies a company usually looks for. It will have to decide what is more important to it: forcing Christians to violate their consciences or doing business in a state with pro-free enterprise policies.

I pray this wakes up Christians, particularly young Christians, who have become confused by the marriage debate. The fight over the definition of marriage inevitably becomes a fight over religious liberty itself.

Notice that the gambit over tolerance is gone. Surely there must be plenty of “progressive” catering and photography companies that would appreciate the business of same-sex couples. But rather than simply finding another business, the left is forcing Christians to participate in same-sex weddings or risk financial ruin.

The fundamental issue isn’t same-sex marriage anymore. It is very likely that the Supreme Court will force same-sex marriage on every state in the union in the near future. We are now fighting for the very concept of religious freedom. Should men and women of faith be forced to participate in something that violates their faith?

Conscience protections for doctors and medical professionals are also at risk. If a baker can be forced to participate in a same-sex wedding, why shouldn’t a doctor or a nurse be forced to perform an abortion? The left has been trying to do that for years, and if we lose this battle over religious liberty, it may well succeed.

    Pilot Deliberately Crashed Plane

France has launched a criminal investigation into the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525. The plane smashed into the French Alps Tuesday morning. After analyzing the plane’s cockpit voice recorder and other data, investigators have determined that 27 year-old co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed the plane after he locked the pilot out of the cockpit.

There have been reports suggesting that Lubitz may have suffered from depression. Perhaps this was suicide. But as the CEO of Lufthansa (the parent company of Germanwings) said, “If one person takes 149 people with him to death, it is not suicide.”

Verbal Rockets Fired At Israel Again

After Benjamin Netanyahu’s reelection last week, I warned readers not to expect an end to the attacks by the Obama White House on the nation of Israel. It is increasingly obvious that Obama has ordered his minions to smear, berate, libel and isolate our ally, even though by doing so they know Israel’s and America’s enemies will be emboldened.

White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough addressed the left-wing, George Soros funded group J Street yesterday. Channeling the rhetoric of Israel’s Islamist enemies, McDonough demanded that Israel surrender Judea and Samaria, saying, “An occupation that has lasted almost 50 years must end.”

Israel is not occupying anything, any more than we are “occupying” Texas. Israel, under intense pressure, withdrew from Gaza ten years ago. The territory quickly became a launching pad for rocket attacks on Israeli civilians.

Just a few months ago, Israel discovered intricate tunnels dug from Gaza deep into Israel — tunnels that were intended for a surprise attack on Israeli communities in which thousands likely would have perished.

Senator Lindsey Graham took to the Senate floor to blast McDonough’s remarks. “The language used by the chief of staff of the president of the United States is exactly what Hamas uses,” Graham said. “Please watch your language. . . . You’re making everything worse, and now you’ve added fuel to the fire.”

But Obama certainly knows that his public isolation of Israel could very well lead to Israel’s enemies striking again. Hezbollah is building its own tunnel network and Iranian officers are now directing troops near Israel’s borders.

    What Is Obama Hiding?

Now the Obama Administration is accusing Israel of espionage. The Wall Street Journal reports that senior Obama Administration officials say Israel was “spying” on the Iranian nuclear talks. But the real offense was that Israel reportedly dared to share the information with member of Congress.

“It is one thing for the U.S. and Israel to spy on each other. It is another thing for Israel to steal U.S. secrets and play them back to U.S. legislators,” a senior U.S. official claimed. And just what are the secrets that Israel allegedly stole? How badly Obama was caving in to Iranian demands.

A senior Israeli official called the accusation “utterly false,” adding that it was “clearly intended to undermine” relations between Israel and the United States.

Here’s what you need to know: Israeli officials told the Wall Street Journal that they were not spying on American diplomats but “received their information through other means, including close surveillance of Iranian leaders.” Moreover, “U.S. intelligence agencies helped the Israelis build a system to listen in on high-level Iranian communications.”

The Journal also reported that other European nations “particularly the French, have been more transparent with Israel about the closed-door discussions.”

But let’s assume for the sake of argument that Israel was collecting intelligence on the nuclear negotiations. If Iran gets a nuclear weapon, it is of far greater concern to Israel than the U.S. as Iran’s leaders routinely vow to annihilate the Jewish state.

Ponder this too: Israel is not only being accused of spying on the U.S., it is being accused of giving the information to one of our three branches of our government. Israel’s alleged sin is not sharing the information with America’s enemy, but sharing it with the branch of government that is supposed to ratify foreign agreements.

To the Obama Administration, briefing Congress about Obama’s appeasement is considered treason. But, then again, Obama seems to treat congressional Republicans more like enemies than he does the Islamic regime in Tehran. Obama’s whole strategy is to prevent you, the Congress, Israel and anyone else from discovering just how much he has caved in to Iranian demands.

    Boehner Baffled; Dems Deny

News of the spying allegations against Israel caught members of Congress by surprise. House Speaker John Boehner said he was “shocked” and “baffled” by the charge, telling reporters, “There was no information revealed to me whatsoever.”

Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said, “I haven’t had any of them coming up and talking with me about where the deal is. . . . I kind of felt left out.”

Corker suggested this was all White House spin to further undermine Israel, telling reporters, “I think you all understand what’s happening here. You understand who’s pushing this out.”

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Israeli officials “never” spoke to members of his committee. “We don’t know anything about it,” Nunes said.

It’s not just Republicans who are rallying to Israel’s defense. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the ranking Democrats on the Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees, both denied the allegations. Feinstein told reporters, “All I know is what I read in this morning’s newspaper.”

The White House’s hatchet job appears to be falling apart. Someone should be fired.

Yemen Success — Not So Much

Six months ago, President Obama addressed the nation to outline his strategy for confronting ISIS. During his remarks, he suggested his strategy would be similar to “one that we have successfully pursued in Yemen . . . for years.”

So, how’s that Yemeni model working out these days? In the past 48 hours, the United States and Great Britain have evacuated virtually all personnel, including counter terrorism operatives, from the country.

Once a key ally in the war against Al Qaeda, the Yemenis are now begging for foreign military intervention — not from the U.S., but from neighboring Sunni Arab nations like Saudi Arabia in order to defeat Iranian backed rebels. Yes, that Iran — the one Obama has been caving in to for several years.

    The headlines speak for themselves:

“U.S. Counterterrorism Strategy In Yemen Collapses Amid Chaos” — Washington Times
“Out Of Yemen, U.S. Is Hobbled In Terror Fight” — New York Times
“Yemen Descends Into Chaos As Foreign Minister Seeks Help From Neighbors,” — National Public Radio
“Yemen Is Latest In String of Victories for Iran,” — USA Today

    Change & Obamacare

The latest CNN poll has some potentially bad news for Hillary Clinton. Rather than asking respondents about specific candidates, pollsters asked them to consider certain qualities they’d like to see in a candidate. Here’s what they found:

  • 59% of Americans prefer a candidate with executive experience (a governor) rather than a legislator.
  • 57% want the next president to “change most of the policies of the Obama Administration.” Even 22% of Democrats are looking for a change.
This CNN poll is the just the latest in a string of recent surveys showing that voters want change. It’s going to be difficult for Hillary Clinton, a former Obama cabinet secretary, to explain how she represents change from Obama’s policies without alienating Obama’s left-wing supporters.

Speaking of polls and change, our friends at the Weekly Standard have noted that since Obama’s second term began there have been 200 polls testing the popularity of Obamacare. The result: Obamacare is 0-200 with the American people.

It’s no wonder the voters want change when the president’s signature initiative is that unpopular.

    Obama’s Bile

A lot happened in the last 48 hours that would normally make a U.S. president angry. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while we are in negotiations with his country, joined a crowd in demanding “death to America.” An ISIS affiliate published the names, addresses and photos of 100 U.S. military men and women and urged its followers to kill them right here in the U.S. (See items below.)

Sadly, not a harsh word crossed Obama’s lips in outrage regarding either of these affronts. Instead, during an interview with the Huffington Post, President Obama spewed bile once again at Israel and its newly reelected prime minister.

Obama’s animus toward the only Jewish nation in the world and its government can no longer be denied except by the willfully ignorant. Two recent former Israeli ambassadors to the United States, both men of moderate demeanor and students of diplomacy, are now speaking frankly about Obama’s reckless rhetoric.

Former Ambassador Michael Oren said, “The shared democratic values between [Israel] and the United States are the pillars of the relationship between our countries, and because of that, Obama’s words cause significant strategic harm.”

Former Ambassador Danny Ayalon, who served from 2002-2006, accused Obama of “looking to dramatically deepen the rift with Israel.” He added, “What is Obama doing? Instead of acting in a measured way and understanding that at stake is a mutual interest in maintaining good relations, he slapped Netanyahu in the face.”

Obama’s late congratulatory call to Prime Minister Netanyahu was anything but an act of good will. Some Israeli papers are reporting that Obama harangued the prime minister for 30 minutes.

Not coincidentally, the dangers to both Israel and America are growing every day.

    Anti-Semitism On The Rise

From the U.N. to the streets of Europe, the world seems increasingly filled with incitement against the very existence of Israel. A London synagogue was attacked early Sunday morning. At least 20 people were reportedly involved. After beating up a man on the street, the mob chased him into the synagogue, smashed windows and reportedly yelled, “Kill the Jews!”

The Associated Press reports that more than a dozen Jewish graves were desecrated in a cemetery in Gyongyos, Hungary, about 50 miles east of Budapest. What makes this incident so appalling is that the tombstones were not merely defaced or knocked over. That could be easily fixed. In this case, the graves appear to have been dug up and the remains were scattered around the grounds.

Of course, Barack Obama is not calling for synagogues to be sacked or Jewish graves to be dug up. But the concern expressed by Ambassadors Oren and Ayalon about Obama’s rhetoric is valid. The United States has been a historic defender of Israel. Now that the voice of America’s leader is increasingly hostile, anti-Semites everywhere will predictably be emboldened.

    “Death To America”

While President Obama is doing his best to get Iran to agree to a nuclear deal, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is still hoping for our destruction.

During a speech Saturday in which Khamenei was railing against the West and the pressure of sanctions against his regime, his audience began chanting, “Death to America!”

Khamenei did not chastise the crowd for its intolerance. He did not rebuke their belligerence. He embraced it, saying, “Of course yes, death to America, because America is the original source of this pressure.”

Why are we negotiating at all with this regime? What about its actions gives us any assurance that it can be trusted?

    ISIS Targets Troops

Over the weekend, ISIS published online what is being described as a “kill list” — the names, photos and home addresses of 100 U.S. military personnel.

Those who continue to ignore or downplay the religious significance of this conflict should read the message posted with the list. It begins, “O You who worship the cross, O You crusaders that fight the Islamic State. . .”

It continues with a chilling exhortation to jihadists in America to open up a second front in the war. Consider this excerpt:

“With the huge amount of data we have from various different servers and databases, we have decided to leak 100 addresses so that our brothers in America can deal with you. And now we have made it easy for you by giving you addresses, all you need to do is take the final step, so what are you waiting for? Kill them in their own lands, behead them in their own homes, stab them to death as they walk their streets thinking that they are safe.”

    The Culture Wars

Establishment voices who insist conservatives should stop talking about abortion need to pay attention to what is happening in Congress right now. Both the House and the Senate are facing gridlock because pro-abortion politicians are demanding hard-working taxpayers be forced to subsidize abortions.

In the Senate, left-wing senators stalled debate on a bill to fight human sex trafficking because the bill contains language, known as the Hyde Amendment, prohibiting the use of taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions. The delay on the human trafficking bill is holding up a confirmation vote for Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch.

Meanwhile, in the House, pro-abortion groups are threatening to scuttle a deal on Medicare reforms over the Hyde Amendment.

The Hyde Amendment is not something new or controversial. It has been routinely included in spending bills for nearly 40 years because Democrats and Republicans, no matter how they felt about abortion, could at least agree that taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to subsidize it. A January Marist poll found that 68% of Americans oppose the use of taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions.

As I have written before, no matter how much they might prefer to talk about marginal tax rates or trade policy, conservatives cannot avoid the culture wars. On issues like this, they should speak up boldly. No American should be forced to pay for even one abortion.

    One Nation Under Allah?

The latest example of the multicultural virus infecting our schools just erupted at Pine Bush High School in Pine Bush, New York. The school, to its credit, begins the day with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance over the school intercom.

Recently, school administrators decided they could show their really cool progressive commitment to diversity by directing that the Pledge be recited in Arabic — including “one nation under Allah” instead of “under God.”

The local community, including veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and many students were not amused. The school has since apologized. Apparently they thought “under God” and “under Allah” were synonymous. They are not.

The fact is there are many nations in the world that are “under Allah,” and they generally are not pleasant places for women, minorities, Christians and Jews — or many Muslims for that matter.

There is only one country in the world built on the idea that liberty comes from God, the God of the Bible. That nation is the United States of America. And that central idea of our founding is a reason why we have been a force for good around the world and a haven for the world’s persecuted.

Sadly, given the growing jihadist wave around the world and the likelihood of a nuclear-armed Iran, young men and women like those at Pine Bush High School may be called upon in the years ahead to go off to battle those who truly intend to make one world under Allah.

    Obama Encourages Iran’s Youth

President Obama is once again reaching out to Millennials — Iran’s Millennial generation. In a video message wishing Iranians a happy new year, the New York Times reports that Obama is encouraging Iran’s youth “to pressure their leaders to accept the [nuclear] deal on the table.”

I couldn’t help but recall a little history here. The last time the youth of Iran in a meaningful way pressured their government was in 2009. Hundreds of thousands of young Iranians took to the streets protesting corruption and a rigged election and demanding an end to the Islamic regime.

If they had been successful, there probably would be a lot less worry today about that same regime building a nuclear arsenal. But far from encouraging Iran’s youth then, Obama abandoned the demonstrators, and today the Islamic Republic is wreaking havoc across the Middle East.

    Obama’s Contempt

Sadly, even in this new year’s greeting, Obama could not resist criticizing Americans who disagree with his bad nuclear deal. He said: “There are people, in both our countries and beyond, who oppose a diplomatic resolution.”

Obama is referring to conservatives like Senator Tom Cotton and the 46 senators who signed his letter. He is referring to the millions of Americans who don’t trust that he will get a deal that stops Iran’s nuclear program. (We have seen this movie before — the last Democrat administration gave us a nuclear North Korea.)

The mullahs of Iran don’t want a deal if it in any way limits their ability to develop nuclear weapons with which they could annihilate Israel and threaten the United States.

Conservatives and a significant number of pro-Israel Democrats are trying to protect the country from a weak deal they believe will enable the mullahs to develop nuclear weapons.

Yet Obama claims these diametrically opposite points of view are somehow equivalent. Moreover, his statement is simply not true.

There is no one I know of who opposes a tough, verifiable deal. But few outside the cloistered confines of the Obama White House believe this deal is tough or verifiable. History gives us little reason to trust the tyrants in Tehran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

He then goes on to say, “Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has issued a fatwa against the development of nuclear weapons.”

He can’t possibly believe that. If he does believe it, why have we wasted the last two years on these negotiations?

If the ayatollah’s intentions are purely innocent, then why are the Iranians being so uncooperative — burying their centrifuges underground and in mountains, refusing to grant international inspectors access to Iranian scientists and nuclear sites? In fact, there is no such fatwa and if there were it wouldn’t be worth the paper it was written on.

It is hard to come up with words to describe the foreign policy this administration has implemented and the damage that will last for years when and if we can try to clean it up.

    Cotton Wins

The left and the media went ballistic when Senator Tom Cotton and 46 senators dared to remind the Iranians that the elected representatives of the American people also had a say on binding treaties negotiated by our presidents. For all the handwringing and furrowed brows over Senator Cotton’s letter, he is the clear winner in that public battle with the Obama White House.

It got almost no news coverage, but 363 members of the House of Representatives — that’s 83% of the chamber — sent their own letter to Obama yesterday saying essentially the exact same thing as Senator Cotton’s letter. Here’s an excerpt:

“Should an agreement with Iran be reached, permanent sanctions relief from congressionally-mandated sanctions would require new legislation. In reviewing such an agreement, Congress must be convinced that its terms foreclose any pathway to a bomb, and only then will Congress be able to consider permanent sanctions relief.”

    Wo(men)’s Issues

Earlier this month, Minnesota Sen. Al Franken made a revealing comment at a gala celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of EMILY’s List, the nation’s most influential pro-abortion political action committee. “First of all,” he quipped as he began his introduction of the group’s president, Stephanie Schriock, “I apologize for being a guy.”

The former Saturday Night Live actor’s jest probably earned him a few laughs. But, as I argue in an op-ed in The Federalist, it also hinted at the absurdity of what has become an increasingly common refrain among abortion advocates — that reproductive issues are (or ought to be) the domain of women alone.
