Putin Strikes

Putin is tightening his noose around Ukraine. While Russian troops on leave have reinforced flagging separatists in eastern Ukraine, two columns of Russian tanks and armored fighting vehicles invaded southeastern Ukraine and seized a town on the Sea of Azov, creating a second front.

A Ukrainian military spokesman said, “Our border servicemen and guardsmen retreated as they did not have heavy equipment.”

The White House announced this morning that Obama will meet with his National Security Council this afternoon. They certainly have a lot to discuss. For example, how will Obama respond to Putin’s latest act of aggression?

So far, Obama has refused to do the one thing that could make a difference — arm the Ukrainian forces. For months they have been requesting access to better, heavier weapons. Instead, we are giving them socks.

This seems to be Obama’s preferred approach. The Kurds have also been asking for better weapons to combat ISIS. After months of dithering, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel implied this week that we might finally be getting around to it.

But guess what? Kurdish President Massoud Barzani said Tuesday, “We asked for weapons and Iran was the first country to provide us with weapons and ammunition.”

By the way, the Kurds are doing what the Iraqi government has seldom done in recent years. They are protecting Christians and Christian sites that have not yet been razed by ISIS.

The pattern here is stark. Not only does Obama lead America’s retreat from the world, but he and the left are also hesitant to supply assistance to those willing to fight for their own liberty.

Stark Warnings

While every anniversary of 9/11 should be a cause for greater vigilance, there are a number of reasons to be particularly concerned in the coming days. We have written repeatedly about Western jihadists fighting on the battlefield. We have no idea how many may have come home.

Yesterday in Ohio a school was locked down when it received a call from an individual with a heavy Middle Eastern accent warning of a mass shooting due to anger at Israel. Thankfully, nothing happened. (The odds are overwhelming that a terrorist wouldn’t call in a threat. But the venom aimed at Israel is a marker of the radicalization going on around the world and here in the U.S.)

Referring to a possible attack this coming September 11th, retired Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney raised eyebrows Monday when he said:

“I believe that we should go to DEFCON 1 and be prepared for another strike. There are too many indications. …I believe American cities will be attacked and we should be prepared for it. …9/11 is a very attractive date for [ISIS].”

Underscoring the danger are warnings in the latest issue of an Al Qaeda magazine. This one provides instructions on how to build car bombs. It calls on Islamists to attack targets such as Times Square, Las Vegas casinos, oil tankers and military colleges. It includes a cryptic question regarding a timeline of possible attacks, suggesting one could be imminent.

Meanwhile, “mainstream” Muslim groups are doing everything possible to make the prevention of future attacks harder. These groups recently sent a letter to the White House demanding “a mandatory retraining program for all federal, state and local law enforcement officials” to make them more sensitive to Muslims.

Some jurisdictions are already caving in. New York City, under the left-wing direction of Mayor Bill de Blasio, shut down a surveillance unit within the New York Police Department aimed at exposing Islamic extremism.

U.S. intelligence estimates that as many as 300 Americans are waging jihad overseas with ISIS, and yet these groups refuse to admit there is a problem.

Obama Prepares Amnesty Defense; GOP Hits Back

Polls have consistently shown overwhelming opposition to Barack Obama’s handling of immigration. Voters want the border secured and our immigration laws enforced. But Obama is doing the exact opposite, and he’s getting ready to do even more of it.

He’s not oblivious to the polls and neither are his allies in Congress. The Washington Post reports that while Senate Democrats are running scared, “Some strategists say privately that … [Obama] has written off the Democrats’ prospects for retaining control of the [Senate], deciding to focus on securing his legacy instead.”

Obama’s not oblivious to the law either. White House lawyers are busy crafting a legal defense for his new amnesty order, anticipating “an expected onslaught of opposition.” But the Associated Press adds:

“Obama may have undermined his case… In a 2012 interview with Telemundo, Obama defended his decision to defer deportations for children but said he couldn’t go any bigger. ‘If we start broadening that, then essentially I would be ignoring the law in a way that I think would be very difficult to defend legally. So that’s not an option.'”

That statement should be Exhibit A in every legal challenge seeking to overturn Obama’s order and uphold the rule of law. But before this gets litigated in a court of law, it will be fought out in the court of public opinion and at ballot boxes across the country in the coming weeks.

As I have argued, the most effective case against amnesty is to take up the economic defense of struggling American workers. Senator Jeff Sessions has been fearless in championing the middle class during debates over immigration reform. It seems top party strategists are finally listening.

Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, recently said:

“Democrats are terrified of this issue. President Obama’s Executive Amnesty would inject adrenaline into an electorate already eager to send him a message of disapproval. The ‘Economy’ means different things to voters … and immigration is viewed by many as part of the overall economic equation.
“Executive amnesty would not only subvert the law, but depress wages, and hurt the poorest Americans most of all — including legal immigrants looking to rise into the middle class. … Democratic candidates will be responsible for President Obama’s Executive Amnesty. They will be complicit in slashing wages and making it even more difficult for unemployed Americans trying to get a job to find one.”

Now that’s fighting back! You can read more here.

Ceasefire Holding

The ceasefire announced yesterday between Israel and Hamas seems to be holding — for good reason. While Hamas declared victory yesterday, in reality it was increasingly desperate to end the fighting.

Some Israelis are frustrated that Hamas wasn’t totally defeated, but the jihadists took a beating. Their terror tunnel complex was exposed and decimated. Top leaders and hundreds of fighters were killed. Many weapons caches were destroyed. And reports suggest Hamas may have had only a month’s worth of rockets left in its arsenal.

The New York Times reports that while Hamas may be putting on a happy face, “it had abandoned most of its demands, ultimately accepting an Egyptian-brokered deal that differs little from one proffered on the battle’s seventh day.” Israeli Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz said, “Hamas destroyed Gaza, harmed itself, and didn’t achieve anything. Hamas knows the truth. They can celebrate, but they know the truth.”

Israel is agreeing to relax some elements of its trade restrictions on Gaza. Humanitarian aid and building supplies will be allowed in. Let’s hope Hamas uses the materials this time to build homes and schools rather than terror tunnels.

In exchange, Hamas has agreed, in principle, to discuss the demilitarization of Gaza at a future date. Consider me skeptical. A Hamas spokesman said the truce was “paving the way for the next phase of liberating Jerusalem and the land of Palestine. Today, we are closer to Jerusalem.”

The annihilation of the Jewish state is Hamas’ ultimate goal, reflected in its charter. As long as Hamas controls Gaza and enjoys the support of the Palestinian people, the jihadists will remain a long-term threat to Israel’s security.

The Jihadi Threat To America’s Security

Yesterday a spokesman for the National Security Council confirmed reports that an American citizen from San Diego, California, was killed in Syria fighting for ISIS. Douglas MacArthur McCain converted to Islam in 2004 and referred to himself as “Duale ThaslaveofAllah.”

NBC News reports that McCain was born in Illinois and graduated from high school in Minnesota. While there, he became best friends with Troy Kastigar, who “was killed fighting for the Al-Shabaab terror group in Somalia in 2009.”

McCain’s death highlights the growing threat of radical Islam within America. According to one report, government intelligence agencies are attempting to track “as many as 300 Americans who are fighting side by side with the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.” What happens when these battle-hardened jihadists come home?

Law enforcement agencies are clearly worried. As a result of the airstrikes President Obama recently ordered against ISIS in Iraq, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are warning local police departments to be vigilant and on the lookout for extremists “plotting against targets of opportunity.”

It’s already happening, but most media outlets are refusing to cover it. Ali Muhammad Brown went on a cross-country killing spree this summer, murdering four people as “vengeance” for U.S. actions in the Middle East.

Obama To “Shame” America

Back from vacation, Barack Obama has put down his golf clubs and picked up his pen and phone again. The Obama White House is working to impose a new cap and trade scheme through the United Nations. Even the New York Times seems incredulous. Consider this excerpt:

“The Obama administration is working to forge a sweeping international climate change agreement to compel nations to cut their planet-warming fossil fuel emissions, but without ratification from Congress. …But under the Constitution, a president may enter into a legally binding treaty only if it is approved by a two-thirds majority of the Senate.

“To sidestep that requirement, President Obama’s climate negotiators are devising what they call a ‘politically binding’ deal that would ‘name and shame’ countries into cutting their emissions.”

Let me remind you that cap and trade is such a radical idea that it failed to pass the Senate even when Democrats controlled a super majority in 2009 and 2010. Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) once admitted that a carbon cap and trade scheme was “a great big tax.” Warren Buffett has called cap and trade a “huge tax” and a “regressive tax,” meaning it hurts the poor the most.

What might such a huge and regressive tax look like? Skyrocketing utility bills. Barack Obama promised that under his cap and trade plan “electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket” and that it would also “bankrupt the coal industry.” Food prices could skyrocket too. And gas prices could double to $7.00 a gallon.

Carbon emissions are directly linked to economic activity. A growing economy requires energy. Cap and trade would cap energy use by dramatically taxing it. In the process it would trade away our economic prosperity. The United States has the biggest economy, which means we have the most to lose.

But because Obama can’t ram this radical job-killing idea through Congress, he is willing to circumvent the Constitution and use the U.N. to shame his own country. That is shameful!

By the way, millions of Americans might be thankful for a little global warming. Environmental regulations already imposed by Obama’s EPA could force massive blackouts if we experience another cold winter.

Backups & Blackberries

There may be a breakthrough concerning the IRS Tea Party targeting scandal. Judicial Watch, which is currently engaged in a legal battle with the IRS, is claiming that Lois Lerner’s emails are not missing.

In a statement yesterday afternoon, the organization said that IRS attorneys acknowledged Friday that “Lois Lerner’s emails, indeed all government computer records, are backed up by the federal government in case of a government-wide catastrophe.” But it would be “too onerous” to retrieve them.

The implication of the statement is that — contrary to all previous testimony — Lerner’s emails still exist.

Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch told Fox News: “So everything we’ve been hearing about scratched hard drives about missing emails of Lois Lerner, other IRS officials, other officials in the Obama administration, it’s all been a pack of malarkey.”

Fitton went on to accuse the IRS of “massive obstruction of justice.”

IRS officials are pushing back, saying that Judicial Watch mischaracterized their statement.

“There was no new back-up system described last week to Judicial Watch,” an administration spokesman said. “Government lawyers who spoke to Judicial Watch simply referred to the same email retention policy that Commissioner (John) Koskinen had described in his Congressional testimony.”

The IRS claims that its backup tapes are routinely recycled, so any backups of Lerner’s emails were (conveniently) lost too. That may well be true. If so, then why say at all that the database is “too onerous” to search? There would be no point in searching it.

Nevertheless, the Treasury Department’s inspector general is investigating the backup system and whether data can be retrieved from recycled backup tapes. This confusion will likely lead to another round of sworn statements regarding who said what and exactly what was meant.

But wait…there’s more.

Potentially more damaging to the IRS is the revelation that Lois Lerner also had a Blackberry, which should have contained all the missing emails. But, according to this report, “The IRS destroyed Lerner’s Blackberry AFTER it knew her computer had crashed and after a Congressional inquiry was well underway.”

Lerner was conveniently issued a new Blackberry in February 2012 — just as news began to break about the IRS targeting conservative groups. Her previous Blackberry would be the one with the missing emails on it. But guess what? The IRS says it has no protocols for retrieving data from such devices because it only backs up computer hard drives!

Middle East In Chaos

More than 100 rockets fired from Gaza slammed into Israel yesterday. A preschool was hit, and 28 Israelis were injured when a home in Ashkelon was struck. Amid new fighting today, another truce was announced. We’ll see if this one holds.

It’s amazing to think about all the effort that Obama, Kerry and Clinton devoted to pushing a two-state solution in recent years. For all the pressure they put on Israel to make concessions, ultimately it all came down to the willingness of the Palestinians to recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. But they refused.

The next administration must stop the fruitless search for a fake peace until a real peace partner emerges willing to accept the one Jewish state in the world.

The failure of Obama’s foreign policy is on full display in Libya. You may recall that Obama eagerly embraced the Arab Spring and backed revolutions in Egypt and Libya. The radical Muslim Brotherhood took over Egypt, and Islamists have been on the march in Libya. Benghazi has fallen and Tripoli is under siege.

Fed up Egyptians eventually kicked out Obama’s Muslim Brotherhood allies and now they are taking matters into their own hands, trying to clean up his mess in Libya. The New York Times reports that Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have bombed Islamist targets in Libya twice in the past week — without even notifying Washington.

Meanwhile, there are mixed messages coming out of Washington regarding efforts to combat ISIS. While Obama is reportedly considering bombing ISIS targets in Syria, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, told reporters he would recommend against it and Virginia Senator Tim Kaine (D) is insisting that Obama lacks the authority to do so.

Speaking of Washington, I saw a headline today that gave me a chuckle: “Driverless car takes test run through D.C.” That’s as good a place as any to test such a car. The current leadership in Washington has been asleep at the wheel for years as America careens off a cliff!

“There’s Something Wrong”

Missouri teenager Michael Brown was laid to rest yesterday. At his funeral, attended by three White House officials, Al Sharpton delivered a eulogy in which he said,”…there’s something wrong, that we have money to give military equipment to police forces, when we don’t have money for … public education.”

We can debate the militarization of the police and funding for public education another day. But I do agree that there is something wrong in America today.

There’s something wrong when 42 people in Chicago get shot in three days, killing six people including two teenagers, and no one says a word.

Where was Reverend Al then? Where was Jesse Jackson? Where were Eric Holder and the other White House aides?

There is something wrong when the deaths of dozens are overlooked but days of riots and rage at the police follow the death of one teenager.

There is something wrong when Michael Brown’s death becomes world news but Dillon Taylor’s is ignored.

There is something wrong when artists make millions off songs with violent lyrics.

The breakdown of the black family is a terrible wound to the fabric of American society that no government program, no amount of funding for public education, will ever completely fix.

Yes, Reverend Sharpton, there is something wrong. But the solution is not more redistribution of wealth or bigger government.

America needs a revival of our Judeo-Christian values — respect for the sanctity of life, respect for the family, respect for our communities, respect for law and order and respect for one another.

Hillary The Hawk?

There were a lot of reminders last week about the brutal reality of the world we live in. Beheadings. Crucifixions. Threats against major U.S. cities. Unfortunately, it is not at all clear that the images and drama had any impact on the neo-isolationism of the Paul family.

Even after a month of seeing ISIS murdering Christians and other religious minorities, and their supporters posting doctored pictures of the ISIS flag flying over the White House, the best advice that former Congressman Ron Paul had to offer was: “We should mind our own business… the sooner we get out of there, the better.”

Senator Rand Paul is politically smarter than his father. When asked recently about airstrikes against ISIS, he didn’t immediately reject bombing them. But he expressed the same ambivalence we normally hear from President Obama. Paul responded, “I have mixed feelings about it.”

He then went on to argue that fighting ISIS could put us on the same side as the Assad regime, which is also battling ISIS in Syria. But surely, as Senator Paul must know, the fact that ISIS is fighting Assad doesn’t undermine the need for America to do what is necessary for our own security.

On Meet the Press yesterday, Senator Paul accused Hillary Clinton of being “a war hawk.” He added that what scares Democrats the most is that those “tired of war” will vote for him, rather than Hillary. Paul predicted that a campaign between him and Hillary would be “transformative.”

Really? A spokesman for the Democratic National Committee told the Associated Press they were “eager to debate” Paul’s “fringe, isolationist vision.” Paul would cut off all foreign aid, even to friends like Israel.

We can blame Obama all we want for the position America is in today. But we still have a major problem within the ranks of the Republican Party. I believe much of the foreign policy reticence is due to a lack of faith in the current commander in chief, not a lack of faith in America’s role in the world.

But if the Republican Party nominates an anti-Israel isolationist like Rand Paul, Hillary Clinton will be able to run as the candidate most serious about our national defense. And that “transformative” election might well be a repeat of the GOP’s 1964 rout.

Richard Dawkins: A Disciple of Death

There was so much death in the headlines last week that I didn’t have time to comment on the rantings of another death advocate. He’s not one of the boys from Hamas, ISIS or Islamic Jihad, but the noted biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins. He’s become popular among the cultural and political left for mocking those who believe in God.

Having decided long ago that there is no God, Dawkins decided to apply for the position himself, creating his own morality in the process. But since there is no right or wrong, how he goes about creating his own version of morality is a mystery.

Here is his latest decree: According to Dawkins it would be “immoral” if a mother knowingly gave birth to a child with Down syndrome.

In taking this position, Dawkins puts himself on the same moral level as the barbarians of ISIS, who also claim the right to decide who lives and who dies. Unfortunately, because he lives in the heart of the West and has all the appropriate degrees from prestigious universities, his barbarism comes dressed up and might even seem compassionate to some warped minds.

The pagan Romans were known for their barbaric cruelty to the disabled. Babies born with physical defects were often abandoned and left to die from exposure to the elements. For all his education, Dawkins has arrived at the same place.

But make no mistake about it. Dawkins represents an evil philosophy that has shown itself throughout history. From the ovens of Auschwitz to the deserts of the Middle East, the world has been plagued by men who believed that some people had no rights they were bound to respect. ISIS says, “Kill the infidel.” Dawkins says, “Kill those who don’t measure up to my standard of a life worth living.”

As the thinking of men like Dawkins continues to take root in Judeo-Christian civilization, it will be more difficult to muster the moral courage necessary to defeat the other death worshippers who are marauding across the Middle East and parts of Africa. The cheapening of life makes it easier to look away, while saying, “We should mind our own business.”

Britain’s Fifth Column

Here’s more evidence of the moral rot that is taking place within the West: There are more British Muslims fighting with ISIS than serving in the British military.

The British government estimates that there are approximately 600 Muslims serving “Queen and Country” in uniform while it estimates that 800 British Muslims have left the country to wage jihad in Iraq and Syria. Khalid Mahmood, a member of the British Parliament, believes the latter figure is closer to 1,500.

If Mahmood is correct, that means nearly three times as many British Muslims are fighting against England and its values than for England and its values.

Immigration Takes Center Stage

The Associated Press writes today that illegal immigration has become a “pivotal issue” this year, noting how the Texas border crisis has “scrambled the politics of immigration.” As the year began, Democrats thought it was a critical wedge issue that would divide Republicans and drive Hispanics to the voting booth.

Instead, repeated polls have found that Democrats are increasingly on the wrong side of the wedge. Now they are avoiding the issue, while Republicans are running ads on it.

In fact, GOP chances to retake the Senate seem to be improving. A recent poll finds that the New Hampshire Senate race is essentially tied. Scott Brown has closed a 10-point gap in his bid to replace liberal Democrat Jeanne Shaheen.

The only thing that has significantly changed in the past month is that Brown started running ads on immigration, tying Shaheen to the “Gang of 8,” and saying, “It’s time for us to secure the border and enforce the law.”

Speaking of border security, Governor Rick Perry made headlines last week for suggesting that ISIS terrorists may have already exploited our porous borders. A spokesman clarified Perry’s remarks by stating the obvious: While the governor had no specific evidence of ISIS infiltration, Perry’s spokesman said, “If unaccompanied children from Central America can cross our border so easily, it raises serious questions about the ease with which those bent on harming America could do the same.”

Stay tuned, my friends. In spite of the polls, Obama is doubling down. MSNBC reports that he will announce a massive new amnesty for five million illegal immigrants next week.

More Warnings On ISIS

Military and political leaders are ratcheting up their warnings regarding the threat America faces from the jihadists of ISIS. For example:

  • During a Pentagon press briefing yesterday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said:
“ISIL is as sophisticated and well-funded as any group that we have seen. They’re beyond just a terrorist group. They marry ideology, a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess. They are tremendously well-funded. Oh, this is beyond anything that we’ve seen. So we must prepare for everything.”

  • General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, underscored the reality that border security IS national security. While specifically referring to Europe, Dempsey’s comments apply to America as well, as this USA Today report makes clear. Dempsey said:
“Well, the immediacy is in the number of Europeans and other nationalities [including Americans]who have come to the region to become part of that ideology. And those folks can go home at some point. …because of open borders and immigration issues, it’s an immediate threat. That is to say, the fighters who may leave the current fight and migrate home.”

  • Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said this:
“We’re in the most dangerous position we’ve ever been in as a nation. ISIS, they are really bad terrorists, they’re so bad even Al Qaeda is afraid of them. They’re crazy … and they’re rapidly developing a method of blowing up a major U.S. city and people just can’t believe that’s happening.”

“Beyond anything we’ve ever seen.” “An immediate threat.” “Rapidly developing a method of blowing up a major U.S. city.”

And this is the group that Barack Obama once dismissed as “junior varsity.”

By the way, Obama is getting slammed for the terrible optics of cutting loose on the golf course while the Foley family was publicly grieving the loss of their son, Jim. Ezra Klein, a leading Obama apologist, tweeted: “…golfing today is in bad taste. Not sure how to reconcile.”

The New York Daily News ripped Obama’s “Golf War” on its front page yesterday. The article added, “President Obama put his own spin on the oft-quoted advice of predecessor Teddy Roosevelt: speak strongly and carry a nine iron.”

These sorts of episodes — optics, scandals and policy blunders (more on that below) — are seriously hurting Obama in the polls. “Big deal,” you may be thinking. “He’s not on the ballot again.” That’s true, but his allies are — and Obama is hurting them too.

A recent Marist poll found that voters are angry with Obama, and by a 10-point margin they said planned to vote against Democrat candidates because of Obama.

Everything Republicans say and do must make this election a referendum on Obama: Do voters want to elect more Democrats who will support Obama? Or do they want to elect Republicans who will fight him?

    Israel Update

If Israel had bombed a home and 18 innocent Palestinians died, the streets of Paris, London and New York would be filled with angry demonstrators. Well, Hamas just summarily executed 18 Palestinians without trial. There is zero outrage from the U.N. to the streets of major Western cities.

The IDF has released a report finding that Hamas has fired 1,600 rockets at Israel since July 8th from civilian areas — mosques, schools, playgrounds, graveyards, U.N. facilities, etc.

    Scandal Update

  • Yesterday, the non-partisan Government Accountability Office issued a report finding that Obama Administration officials broke two laws when they traded five Taliban generals for a suspected Taliban sympathizer.

First, they failed to sufficiently notify Congress that it was releasing the terrorists. Second, they spent money in the process that was never appropriated for that purpose, funds that “were not technically available,” in violation of the Antideficiency Act.

Noting that federal employees who violate the Antideficiency Act are subject to administrative and even criminal penalties, Senator Saxby Chambliss, the ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, is demanding a special prosecutor to investigate the release of the Taliban 5.

  • Wednesday, a federal judge ordered the Justice Department to release documents demanded by House Republicans as part of their investigation of Operation Fast and Furious, the Obama Administration’s gun-walking scandal that resulted in the death of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. Attorney General Eric Holder has impeded that investigation, even refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena. Two years ago, House Republicans voted to hold him in contempt of Congress.

If Republicans succeed in taking the Senate back this November, it will be much easier for Congress to act against these kinds of outrageous abuses when both the House and the Senate are united and working together.

    Good News

  • More than two dozen members of the House sent a letter this week to the secretary of the Navy questioning the policies and actions that led to the removal of Bibles at Navy lodges. They also reminded the secretary about the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious liberty and corrected left-wing misinterpretations of the Establishment Clause.

The letter was organized by Rep. Randy Forbes, chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, which includes more than 100 House members — virtually all Republicans. I share this just to remind you that there are many good men and women of faith on Capitol Hill fighting for our values every day.

  • The Supreme Court has stopped same-sex marriages from taking place in Virginia. Eight years ago, 57% of Virginia voters approved a constitutional amendment preserving the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

This year, unelected federal judges on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals decided they knew better, voided the will of the people and ordered the state to redefine marriage.

Supporters of normal marriage appealed to Chief Justice John Roberts, who manages appeals from the Fourth Circuit, for an emergency stay blocking the order, and Roberts referred the issue to the full court. The justices evidently decided that the matter deserved further consideration. They issued a stay late Wednesday, so for now Virginia’s marriage amendment remains in effect.

Will The West Win This Time?

President Obama interrupted his Martha’s Vineyard vacation yesterday to address the beheading of American journalist James Foley. Obama mustered all the outrage and anger he is apparently capable of.

After concluding his brief remarks, Obama rushed back to the golf course. In contrast, British Prime Minister David Cameron cancelled his summer vacation and returned to London on the news that Foley’s executioner was most likely British.

One sentence stood out because its theme has been repeatedly used by top administration officials. Obama said: “One thing we can all agree on is that a group like ISIL (ISIS) has no place in the 21st century.”

Apparently the president and his colleagues put a lot of faith in the calendar instead of in what courageous, free men are called to do when confronted by pure evil. There is nothing written in stone about what the 21st century is going to be like. All centuries are defined by the actions of living human beings. Throughout the history of mankind there have been times when man suffered greatly at the hands bloodthirsty tyrants.

Will we rise to the occasion? Or will the world slip into another Dark Age?

The last time that leaders of free nations and the people they governed held the worldview of the president was during the period between the two Great Wars. All over Europe it was widely believed that after the horror of World War I, no one would dare return to such horrors again. The world desperately wanted to believe that it was “the war to end all wars.”

In the highest levels of virtually every government, there was a prevailing belief that pieces of paper, coupled with wagging fingers, could stop barbarians. On university campuses in Great Britain and in other countries, young men were proud to boast that they would never again fight for “King and Country.”

Meanwhile, a demagogic rebel rouser, understanding the thirst for revenge that filled the souls of his fellow Germans, methodically went about plotting conquest and genocide. For years, free nations refused to act, while evil gained strength. Looking back on that sad chapter, there was no guarantee that World War II would end with an Allied victory. And there are no guarantees now that the future belongs to us.

Obama spent a good deal of his remarks yesterday lecturing ISIS (ISIL). He said, “ISIL speaks for no religion.  Their victims are overwhelmingly Muslim, and no faith teaches people to massacre innocents.” That has been a common refrain from public figures in the West ever since 9/11. But there is something odd about it, in my view.

Clearly, there are millions of Muslims who believe Allah does command them to “kill the infidel.” How else can ISIS, Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Boko Haram and the Taliban exist?

Instead of having a professorial argument over their faith, we need to get about the business of winning this war for our civilization! Until we do that, ISIS will continue to have a place in the 21st century.

By the way, if you feel I’m being overly critical, check out this reaction from MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, who said that if ISIS wants to die, “Help them out!”

    “The Same Savagery”

Commenting on the murder of James Foley, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said yesterday:

“You saw the beheading of an American journalist, [James] Foley. It shows you the barbarism, the savagery of these people. Well, we face the same savagery. The people who wantonly rocket our cities and want to conduct mass killings. And when they can, they murder children, teenagers, shoot them in the head — and use their people as human shields.”

Netanyahu is right. Hamas fired 167 rockets into Israel yesterday, hoping to kill innocent Israelis. Israel responded by targeting key terrorist commanders. Three Hamas leaders and a “senior Islamic Jihad terrorist” have reportedly been killed.

As the attacks on Israel continue, this is a good time to again state the obvious: The problem confronting the world is not the nation that lives under the Star of David. The problem is the caliphate of the mind that is becoming a caliphate of territory under the black flag of Al Qaeda and ISIS.

But there is a sickness spreading in the West. Radical Islam subjugates women into slavery, forces religious conversions under the threat of death, beheads people, crucifies them, blows up churches and even attacks mosques deemed insufficiently devout. Yet as this “cancer” metastases throughout the Muslim world, the streets of Paris, Berlin, London, New York and San Francisco are free of outraged protestors demanding an end to the carnage.

It is only when Israel fights back in self-defense that the mobs appear on the scene with their moral critique of what is acceptable in war. Every Western nation ought to be having emergency meetings about how to handle the intellectual heirs of Hitler who are embedded throughout the free world.

The condemnations of Israel, the one nation on the front lines 24/7, must stop!

    Bless You!

The politically correct hostility to faith in the public square is now beyond the realm of the absurd. A Dyer County, Tennessee, high school student was reportedly slapped with an in-school suspension for saying “Bless you” when a fellow student sneezed.

According to senior Kendra Turner, her teacher said such “godly speaking” was for church and banned from her classroom. When the Turner spoke up in defense of her First Amendment rights, her teacher kicked Kendra out of the class, and school administrators cited her for being “aggressive and disruptive.”

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a “law and order” guy. In most cases, I’ll give cops and teachers the benefit of the doubt. But the suppression of free speech and religious liberty is far too common these days, especially when it involves Christians.

Moreover, local reports indicate that other students have complained about this particular teacher being “demeaning” toward their faith, and that she had posted a list of banned phrases, which included “Bless You.”

If you’d like to bless Dyer County School officials with your thoughts, you can reach them at 731-285-6712. But, please, keep it godly!

    End Of Day Report

    Hamas Breaks Ceasefire Again
The latest truce between Israel and Hamas unraveled yesterday after talks in Cairo failed to resolve one of the major issues — Hamas’ demand for open airports and seaports, which Israel will not agree to unless Gaza is demilitarized. The reason should be obvious to anyone. A completely open airport and seaport will mean more weapons from Iran pouring into Gaza, guaranteeing that the next war will be even more costly to Israel.

Hours before the ceasefire was scheduled to end, Hamas fired 50 rockets at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, hoping to kill Israeli civilians. It was the eleventh ceasefire that Hamas had rejected or violated.

    ISIS Beheads American Journalist
While Israel is fighting the jihadists of Hamas, the jihadists of ISIS apparently beheaded American photojournalist James Foley. The decapitation was carried out by a jihadist who, according to one report, spoke “in perfect English in what sounds like a London or southern English accent.”

That fact highlights the likelihood that he grew up in a Western society where messages of tolerance and pluralism were plentiful. Yet he chose the most intolerant, hateful and vicious wing of Islam that does not even pretend to desire peaceful coexistence with other faiths and cultures.

This brutal murder has sparked international condemnation. But as terrible as it is for James Foley and his family, this is what ISIS has been doing to Christians and other religious minorities for months now. Far too many Western leaders are still in denial about the fact that ISIS and Hamas are just two different manifestations of the same jihadist army on the march throughout the Middle East and much of Africa.

Israel is literally on the front lines confronting this barbaric army. Yet too many Western leaders, including our own president, are constantly berating and undermining its efforts. Some reports suggest they may even be holding back reinforcements in an attempt to force Israel to make some sort of peace with a group dedicated to its destruction and ours.

By the way, the jihadists of ISIS have been encouraging the violence in Ferguson, Missouri, with mocking tweets like “How is democracy treating you guys?”

ISIS tweeting about police brutality? The irony abounds coming from a group that beheads journalists, cuts children in half, crucifies Christians, sells women into sexual slavery and viciously rapes girls and boys.

    Speaking Up
Many thanks to Ronald Laudner, president of the World Jewish Congress. He has a column in today’s New York Times, asking, “Why is the world silent while Christians are being slaughtered in the Middle East and Africa?” Let me share with you a few excerpts:

“The general indifference to ISIS, with its mass executions of Christians and its deadly preoccupation with Israel, isn’t just wrong; it’s obscene. … This bond between Jews and Christians makes complete sense. We share much more than most religions. We read the same Bible, and share a moral and ethical core. Now, sadly, we share a kind of suffering: Christians are dying because of their beliefs, because they are defenseless and because the world is indifferent to their suffering.
“Good people must join together and stop this revolting wave of violence. It’s not as if we are powerless. I write this as a citizen of the strongest military power on earth. I write this as a Jewish leader who cares about my Christian brothers and sisters. The Jewish people understand all too well what can happen when the world is silent. This campaign of death must be stopped.”

One of those speaking out is my friend Rep. Frank Wolf, a stalwart champion of religious liberty throughout his many years in public office. Sadly, he is retiring this year, but he is still fighting and still speaking out.

Please tune into Focus on the Family’s radio broadcast this Friday. Rep. Wolf will be discussing the plight of Iraq’s persecuted Christians with the Reverend Canon Andrew White of St. George’s Church of Baghdad. Click here to find your local station listings. And please encourage your pastor to tune in and speak out!

    The People Versus The Elites

Riots and terrorism are dominating the headlines. But the issue of illegal immigration may be about to burst back onto the scene. An official at the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants warns that a second surge of unaccompanied illegal minors — perhaps as many as 30,000 children — is likely to reach the U.S. border sometime in the next four to six weeks.

Meanwhile, there is yet more polling data revealing a growing chasm between the American people and our political and cultural elites. Consider these results from a survey conducted last month by The Polling Company:

  • 75% of likely voters (including 63% of Hispanics) favor enforcement of existing immigration laws — the exact opposite of what Barack Obama is doing.
  • 74% of voters oppose any unilateral amnesty by Obama.
  •  60% believed that “sending these children back to their home countries will convince parents to stop sending their children to the U.S.”
  • And a new poll by Rasmussen Reports finds that 60% of likely voters believe that securing the border is more important than “legalizing the status of undocumented workers in America.”

And what is Obama doing? He recently met behind closed doors at the White House with representatives of leading tech companies trying to find a way to import more foreign workers into America.

That’s odd because Senate Democrats think they can minimize their losses this year by campaigning on “economic patriotism.” How does importing more foreign workers fit into that theme? That could be a tough sell for Democrats, as The Polling Company found that “90% of likely voters feel that U.S.-born workers and legal immigrants already here should get first preference for jobs.”  Ninety percent!

Senator Jeff Sessions blasted the Obama White House’s recent closed-door meeting, noting that virtually every one of the companies now asking for more foreign workers had also announced layoffs. Sessions said:

“Even while they demand more foreign workers, these companies are laying off current employees in droves. Cisco, which Politico reports met with White House aides to advocate for more foreign workers, just last week announced its intent to lay off 6,000 employees. Last month, Microsoft declared it would lay off 18,000 workers. Overall, mass layoffs in the tech industry are up 68% from the prior year.”

    McConnell’s Strategy

Senator Mitch McConnell is vowing to rein in Obama’s abuses if Republicans retake the Senate this November. During a recent interview, McConnell said: “We’re going to pass spending bills, and they’re going to have a lot of restrictions on the activities of the bureaucracy. That’s something he won’t like, but that will be done. I guarantee it.”

I know some of you are skeptical. But publicly telegraphing his strategy now is a good move.

Barack Obama is not very popular in Kentucky. But McConnell is locked in a tough campaign for reelection against a very well-funded Democrat. This focus on Obama will highlight the choice facing Kentucky voters: A senator who will fight Obama’s radical agenda — a war on coal and Kentucky’s traditional values as well as amnesties for illegal immigrants — or another Democrat senator who will support Harry Reid and Barack Obama.
