“Kill The Bill”

That was the advice various conservative activists and leaders are offering House Republicans regarding today’s planned vote on an emergency spending bill to address the border crisis. Writing at The Weekly Standard, my friend Bill Kristol makes the following points:

“[The bill] doesn’t deal in any way with the core cause of the problem, the president’s 2012 executive amnesty for minors or his pending huge expansion of that amnesty. … But the overwhelming reason to kill the bill is that it’s not going to become law anyway. The president and the Senate leadership have made clear they’ll never accept it. So what’s the point of passing it? …

“The president’s approval rating is slipping to historic lows. Let it continue to slide. Don’t bail him out by jamming though a bill that divides Republicans, will confuse voters, won’t become law anyway, muddies responsibility for the border fiasco, and takes the spotlight off what should be the focus of the August recess — President Obama’s failed policies and Congressional Democrats’ support for them.”

Just after 2:00 p.m., news broke that today’s vote had been cancelled. But as we go to press, House Republicans are in a closed-door meeting and anything is possible.

It’s not just conservatives who are worried about Obama’s overreaching on immigration. MSNBC’s left-wing loudmouth Ed Schultz said: “Hold the phone — this would be a mistake if the president were to do this. There is no way Democrats can go home and campaign on across-the-board amnesty for millions of undocumented workers — I don’t think that’s a political winner for the Democrats.”

He added, “The Brits don’t just hand out work permits; the Germans don’t do it… Tell me: Who around this globe just hands out work permits to people to try to solve a problem of immigration? They don’t do that.”

Mark your calendars, friends. This may be the first time (and the last time) Ed Schultz and I agree!

See You In Court, Mr. President

Last night, House Republicans approved a resolution authorizing a federal lawsuit against President Obama for abusing his executive authority.  The resolution, passed on a party-line vote, cites President Obama’s repeated waivers of statutory language in Obamacare.  Obama’s actions were not simply exercises of regulatory discretion, but direct violations of the plain language of the law.

On this issue, I give Boehner credit for trying. With Congress divided between the Democrat Senate and the Republican House, it is hard for Congress to respond to Obama’s abuses. But conservatives have had some success in the courts.

For example, the Supreme Court declared that Obama exceeded his authority when he made certain recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board. One columnist noted that the Obama Administration has lost 13 cases on 9-to-0 votes before the high court in the last two terms.

In the critical Halbig case, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia recently declared that taxpayer-funded subsidies granted through the federal Obamacare exchange are unconstitutional because the law is very clear that subsidies are supposed to be available only through state-based exchanges.

By the way, while Democrats claim that conservatives are pushing an absurd interpretation in Halbig, a key Obamacare architect told various audiences that that was exactly what the law meant.

Supporters of Boehner’s lawsuit also point to two Supreme Court cases, one striking down the line-item veto and a recent opinion on the EPA’s authority.

In 1998, the Supreme Court struck down the line-item veto because it essentially permitted the president to amend legislation, a power the Constitution did not grant to the executive branch. Obama’s executive orders have had the same effect — essentially amending Obamacare without Congress’ assent.

In the EPA decision, Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for the majority, declared, “The power to execute the laws does not include a power to revise clear statutory terms that turn out not to work in practice.” Justice Scalia could have been referring to the administration’s haphazard implementation of Obamacare — making it up as it goes along and ignoring whatever isn’t working or causing too much political pain.

“Stop The Hatin'”

Barack Obama mocked yesterday’s vote at a campaign rally in Missouri. “They have announced that they are going to sue me for taking executive actions to help people,” he said. “They’re mad because I’m doing my job. Stop being mad all the time. Stop just hatin’ all the time.”

American’s decline can be marked by the character or lack thereof among America’s presidents. We’ve gone from George Washington’s eloquent farewell address to Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address to JFK’s “Ask not what your country can do for you,” to Barack Obama’s “Stop the hatin’.” There’s a “g” missing, Mr. President.

Do any of us want to be lectured by this president regarding hate? This is a guy who attended a hate-infused church. He told his supporters, “If they [conservatives] bring a knife to a fight, we’ll bring a gun.” This is the guy who told followers to confront their friends and neighbors. “Get in their face,” he said.

I follow the news pretty closely, but I don’t recall the president once saying that the Iranian regime was built on hate. I don’t recall Obama telling Hamas to stop their “hatin'” of Jews and Christians. No, he reserves that rhetoric for people who believe in lower taxes, the sanctity of life and normal marriage.

Lerner’s Contempt

Former IRS official Lois Lerner has been held in contempt for refusing to testify about her role in the IRS Tea Party targeting scandal. Yesterday the House Ways and Means Committee released excerpts of newly discovered emails that put her contempt for conservatives on full display.

In the messages, Lerner refers to conservatives as “a—holes.”  During an exchange with a friend about the “rabid callers” on “scary right wing radio shows,” Lerner adds, “So we don’t need to worry about alien terrorists. It’s our own crazies that will take us down.”

That is typical of many leftists – they are more concerned about conservative Christian homeschoolers [the “crazies”] than Al Qaeda!

There is a history here with Lois Lerner.  Before joining the IRS, she worked at the Federal Election Commission.  During the Clinton years, Lerner led the FEC’s legal jihad against the Christian Coalition.  So it’s not at all surprising that in the next left-wing administration Lerner’s contempt for conservatives became unhinged.

Government employees are certainly entitled to their own opinions. But one of the most important “good government” reforms was the Hatch Act. Passed in 1939, it was intended to prevent career civil servants from using the brute force of government power to punish political enemies. In the case of Lois Lerner, you’d have to be utterly naive to think she was acting within the limits of the law.

Sessions Slams House Leadership Surrender

When it comes to immigration, Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) is one of the best champions of the rule of law and conservative values. He has steadfastly fought the Senate’s comprehensive immigration reform bill as a sellout of American workers and the middle class. And Sessions has been one of the most vocal critics of President Obama’s abuse of executive authority to impose another mass amnesty.

That’s why his comments slamming the House’s legislation to address the border crisis got my attention. Here’s is an excerpt of Senator Sessions’ statement:

“The Obama Administration has openly declared its plan to implement a unilateral executive amnesty for 5–6 million more illegal immigrants. This unlawful amnesty –urged on by congressional Democrats — would include work permits, taking jobs directly from millions of struggling American citizens.
“Any action Congress might consider to address the current border crisis would be futile should the president go forward with these lawless actions. Congress must speak out and fight against them. It must use its spending power to stop the president’s executive amnesty.

“That the House leaders’ border package includes no language on executive actions is surrender to a lawless president. And it is a submission to the subordination of congressional power.

“After years of falling wages and rising joblessness, American workers are pleading for someone to hear them. How can it be that our president is brazenly advertising that he will nullify and strip away American workers’ immigration protections, and their own elected leaders will not rise to their defense? Or to the defense of our laws and our Constitutional order?”

Senator Sessions is right. Obama has been crystal clear about his intentions to issue another mass amnesty. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), one of the most vocal pro-amnesty advocates in Congress, told MSNBC that he expected Obama would act “broadly and generously.”

How does Obama act “generously” when it comes to immigration? The same way liberals always do — he’s going to be generous with your money, giving away your schools, your hospitals and the very concept of citizenship.

Senator Ted Cruz is reportedly meeting with House conservatives this evening to rally opposition to the leadership’s border bill. Rep. Steve King (R-IA), another stalwart conservative, is suggesting the leadership could earn more support if it includes the Blackburn bill and other changes to its border legislation.

I am under no illusions that the Cruz/Blackburn bills could pass Harry Reid’s Senate or that Obama would sign them. But that’s really not the point. What will the GOP response be AFTER Obama issues his next amnesty? It will be too late to pass the Cruz/Blackburn bills then.

Go on offense. Get ahead of the Democrats. Include the Blackburn bill in the border legislation. Force Senate Democrats to vote it down. Then take the amnesty issue to the American people in November!

Pence Demands Deportation

The Obama Administration reportedly transported nearly 250 children from Central America to Indiana without informing state officials. Governor Mike Pence told reporters yesterday that he only learned about these children being in his state after hearing about them in news reports. In response, Governor Pence fired off a letter to President Obama telling him to remove the children:

“Those who have crossed our border illegally should be treated humanely and with decency and respect, but they should be returned expeditiously to their home countries to be reunited with their families rather than being dispersed around the United States in sponsored placement or long-term detention facilities. Failure to expedite the return of unaccompanied children thwarts the rule of law and will only continue to send a distorted message that illegally crossing into America is without consequence.
“What we are currently experiencing in Indiana … is neither sensible nor humane. States should not be asked by the federal government to deal with the consequences of a failed national immigration policy.”

There are a lot of big cities that have declared themselves to be “sanctuary cities” and above the law — San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Detroit. Give the liberal residents of these cities what they asked for: Send the illegal immigrants there!

Bad News For Obama

Yet another national poll finds overwhelming public opposition to Obama’s handling of immigration policy. Here are some key findings from the latest Associated Press survey:

  • Only 31% approve of Obama’s handling of immigration policy, while 68% disapprove.

  • 67% said illegal immigration was an “extremely/very serious problem” facing the country, while 11% said it was “not at all serious.”
  • Only 20% of the public said they favored the current policy that allows children from Central America to avoid immediate deportation, unlike Mexican or Canadian children.

The Obama White House and left-wing Democrats may think immigration is a powerful wedge issue, but they are clearly on the wrong side of the wedge. And it is telling that vulnerable Senate Democrats are starting to panic and publicly stating their opposition to any mass amnesty by executive order.

Obama Writes New History Of America

Sunday, the White House released a statement from the president celebrating Eid-al-Fitr, the end of the month-long Ramadan fast for Muslims. In the statement, Obama said, “Eid also reminds us of the many achievements and contributions of Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy.”

I wonder if the president could nail down for us when all that “fabric building” and “democracy strengthening” took place. From 1776 until recent decades, there were very few Muslims in America. The vast majority of mosques in the country were established in the last 30 years.

I am sure many of these folks are good people, but it is silly for Obama to suggest that they have been central to the American historical experience. Someday perhaps we will see hundreds of thousands of Muslims marching in New York and Washington, D.C., against Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS and Iran. Then we can talk about fabric building.

I’m also still waiting for Obama to deliver a speech singing the praises of the Judeo-Christian contributions to the fabric of our society. The Founders were reading the Torah and the New Testament on their way to Constitution Hall, not the Koran. But I won’t hold my breath.

The issue of illegal immigration is once again before Congress and the American people due to a man-caused crisis at the southern border. Obama is demanding $3.7 billion in additional spending, while his Democrat allies in the Senate are proposing to spend a billion less.

In the House, Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY), chairman of the Appropriations Committee, introduced legislation today that authorizes only enough spending to see federal agencies through the end of the fiscal year — about a fifth of what Obama requested.

In addition, it includes a number of policy changes that Democrats reject, such as amending a 2008 law in order to speed up deportations, lifting environmental restrictions that impede Border Patrol operations on federal lands and preventing certain criminals from applying for asylum.

It is unclear whether the House can pass this legislation. The reason for that is Senate Democrats are reportedly scheming to jam their entire comprehensive immigration reform bill into whatever the House passes. But the phones lines on Capitol Hill are reportedly melting down in support of other immigration-related bills.

A new poll found that 77% of Americans want individuals streaming across our border from Central America to be returned to their home countries — and that includes 64% of Hispanics. Moreover, most Americans (57%) believe this “humanitarian crisis” is due to the belief that Obama is granting illegal immigrants amnesty.

As we reported yesterday, Barack Obama is preparing to do just that. He is expected to issue new executive orders within weeks granting a mass amnesty to as many as five million illegal immigrants. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) is warning that doing so would effectively gut immigration enforcement in America. He’s right.

To counter that, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Marsh Blackburn (R-TN) have introduced bills (S. 2631 and H.R. 5160) that would prevent federal funding for any expansion of Obama’s “deferred action” program. That was Obama’s 2012 executive order that granted amnesty to more than 520,000 teenaged and adult illegal immigrants who were brought into America as children by their parents.

    Senator Sessions said:

“The American people have begged and pleaded for years for our laws to be enforced. We have people in our own country living in violence, fear and poverty every single day. They have demanded an immigration policy that puts their jobs, wages and communities first. Every citizen should pick up the phone and ask of their congressional representative: Where do you stand?”

ACTION ITEM: Call your representatives right now at 202-224-3121. Urge your senators and representative to support the rule of law. Demand that they prevent another Obama amnesty by supporting the Cruz/Blackburn bills.

    Putin’s Behaving Badly

Whatever happened to Hillary Clinton’s famous “reset” of our relationship with Russia? We were told that Obama and Hillary would make the world a better place, where we could all hold hands and sing “Kumbaya.” Obama infamously even promised Putin he would be more “flexible” once he won reelection in 2012. Well, it seems Russia has reset the relationship by tying Mr. Flexible in knots.

Putin seized the Crimean Peninsula and, after barely a whimper of protest from the West, he has set his sights on eastern Ukraine. After his separatist allies shot down a civilian passenger jet, you might expect him to cool it for a bit. But no, Putin doubled down, launching an artillery barrage from Russian territory into Ukraine.

Now there is news that Russia has violated a 1987 missile treaty negotiated by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. The New York Times reports that the violations began years ago, but it took the Obama Administration until last year to raise the violation with Russian officials.

Yesterday, President Obama sent Putin a sternly-worded letter in which he reportedly “underscored his interest in a high-level dialogue with Moscow.” Another reset, Comrade Obama?

It has often been said that a conservative is a liberal mugged by reality. Obama has been pushing America down a dark alley for the past five and-a-half years, and we keep getting mugged by the reality of the world as it is, rather than what Obama might like it to be. I don’t hold out much hope for Obama, but it looks like the scales are falling from the eyes of many Americans who once bought into the hype about hope and change.

Kerry Pushes Hamas Proposal: Undermines Israel & Egypt

After days of intense negotiations and shuttle diplomacy, Secretary of State John Kerry submitted his proposed ceasefire plan to the Israeli cabinet Friday. Cabinet ministers unanimously rejected it.

The plan was so bizarre that the Obama Administration was forced to deny that it was promoting Hamas’ demands in the document.

One columnist at Haaretz, a very left-wing Israeli newspaper, blasted Kerry’s deal, asking “What was he thinking?” Consider these excerpts:

“The document recognized Hamas’ position in the Gaza Strip, promised the organization billions in donation funds and demanded no dismantling of rockets, tunnels or other heavy weaponry at Hamas’ disposal. The document placed Israel and Hamas on the same level, as if the first is not a primary U.S. ally and as if the second isn’t a terror group…

“It’s not clear what Kerry was thinking when he presented this draft. … But his conduct in recent days over the Gaza cease-fire raises serious doubts over his judgment and perception of regional events. It’s as if he isn’t the foreign minister of the world’s most powerful nation, but an alien, who just disembarked his spaceship in the Mideast.”

Since Kerry is not president, I assume his plan reflected his marching orders from President Obama. This is the most anti-Israel administration in our history.

Israel has lost more than 40 soldiers since the fighting began a few weeks ago. Proportionally, that would be the equivalent of the United States losing more than 1,600 soldiers in the same period of time. It took about two and a half years before the U.S. lost that many men during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Yet, while the world is pressuring Israel to end its campaign against Hamas, 87% of Israelis support continuing the effort to destroy Hamas.

Rather than forcing Israel to accommodate terrorists, the rest of free world should be figuring out how to destroy Hezbollah, ISIS and Boko Haram, which has killed more Christians in Nigeria this year than the number of Palestinians who have died in Gaza. (And world reaction has been limited to Facebook posts and re-tweets.)

    News You Won’t See

Several hundred Iraqi Christians gathered outside of the White House Saturday to insist that the Obama Administration and the U.N. act to stop the ongoing assault by ISIS jihadists on Christians. Similar demonstrations took place in Paris, London and the Hague.

Christians have been driven out of Mosul, Iraq, one of the earliest Christian communities in the world. Churches and other Christian sites have been destroyed by an aggressive Islamist campaign of ethnic cleansing. Not surprisingly, there was no response from the Obama White House. The president must have been too busy golfing or attending another fundraiser.

    Obama Considers Mass Amnesty

Barack Obama recently vowed to “fix as much of our immigration system as I can on my own, without Congress.” Various news reports give us a clue as to what Obama is likely to do: grant a mass amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants through executive orders. The Los Angeles Times reports that Obama is planning to “shield from deportation large numbers of immigrants living in the country illegally.”

The most likely option, according to the Times, involves allowing the illegal immigrant parents of children born in the U.S. “to apply for temporary legal status which would let them work legally in the U.S. … that option could affect about 5 million people.”

Another option would limit this plan to the parents of the so-called “Dreamers,” illegal immigrants who were brought into the U.S. as children. More than 520,000 illegal immigrants have applied for amnesty through Obama’s “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” initiative. So this option could include more than one million people.

It seems that the Obama White House is intentionally pushing the envelope, daring Republicans to impeach him. The Los Angeles Times reports Obama will act by the end of summer, hoping, as White House Advisor Dan Pfeiffer put it, “to increase the angry reactions from Republicans.”

They are hoping that Obama’s abuse of power will increase calls for his impeachment and that more talk of impeachment will drive liberal and minority voters to the polls in November. The Times adds, “The open references to impeachment at the White House … suggest that administration officials are trying to shape the political battleground in advance.”

Once again we are seeing just how crassly partisan Obama and Democrats can be. They are using people and policy as pawns in a political chess game, while undermining the rule of law and the Constitution.

    Violent Gang Recruiting Kids

Among the tens of thousands of children pouring across the border, there is no doubt that there are thugs among those trying to find a better life. The problem is that when you fail to control the border, it is difficult to determine the good from the bad.

For example, Border Patrol agents are warning that MS-13, one of the worst violent gangs, is now recruiting children inside a detention facility in Nogales, Arizona.

What irony! We’re told that these kids are fleeing Central America to escape the gangs, but evidently the gangs are inside the shelters. Members of Congress cannot get inside these shelters, but the gangs can.

    Bishops Blast Obama’s Discrimination

The nation’s Catholic leaders denounced Barack Obama’s recent executive order forcing federal contractors to accommodate transgendered employees. As we noted last week, faith leaders lobbied the Obama White House for a religious exemption because many federal contractors are faith-based groups performing social serves for the government. But Obama refused to include such an exemption.

In their statement, the bishops blasted Obama’s order as “unprecedented and extreme,” warning that it “implements discrimination” and will “exclude federal contractors precisely on the basis of their religious beliefs.”

Princeton Professor Robert George, vice chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, said:

“Barack Obama declared war on the Catholic Church and people of other faiths who hold to traditional beliefs about marriage and sexual morality. We must defeat the enemies of conscience — at the ballot box — not only to protect our own freedom … but also to protect the interests of those served so well by faith-based institutions. This is a war and we must win for their sake as well as our own.”

    Who Killed The Kids?

Shells struck a U.N.-run shelter in Gaza yesterday, killing 16 Palestinians, many of them women and children. Hamas and much of the international media blamed Israel for the strike. Israel is investigating the incident and urged that there be no rush to judgment until the facts are in.

Whatever the outcome of the investigation, I have no doubt where the blames lies. How can I be so confident, you ask? Hamas in Gaza, just like Hezbollah in Lebanon, follows an obscene strategy of embebbing itself in civilian neighborhoods. From these neighborhoods, it launches missile attacks on “the Zionist enemy” in an intentional effort to kill Israeli civilians.

Before this latest conflict erupted, a Pew poll found that 62% of Palestinians in Gaza supported suicide bombings to kill Jews. I am not surprised. Don’t forget that Hamas was elected by the people of Gaza.

Israel, in contrast, goes to extraordinary lengths to avoid civilian deaths, including putting their own soldiers at risk. One Israeli official said, “For two days we were trying to move people out of that school in particular and the Beit Hanoun area in general. This morning we sought a ceasefire in the area and a humanitarian evacuation of civilians, but Hamas refused.”

Civilian deaths are unavoidable because Hamas has turned Gaza into a Hamas military base. Under international law, Hamas’ launching of military assaults from Gaza neighborhoods is a war crime. It should be denounced as such by our own government.

In recent weeks, Hamas’ disgusting tactics have been discovered but ignored by major media and Israel-bashers. Among them: using ambulances to transport Hamas terrorists from one location to another, using Gaza’s main hospital as a headquarters for Hamas leaders, using schools and mosques as rocket depots and placing the entrances of “terror tunnels” in private homes. The purpose of the tunnel network is to facilitate raids into Israel threatening dozens of Israeli communities.

War is hell. Innocents die. But in war between democratic Israel and the terrorists of Hamas, who want to destroy Western Civilization, I pick civilization over the barbarians.

    “Obama’s Immigration Flip-Flop”

That’s the title of a Politico article this morning outlining Barack Obama’s constantly evolving immigration positions. It’s hard to believe now, but here’s what President Obama said about granting a mass amnesty in 2010:

“I recognize the sense of compassion that drives this argument, but I believe such an indiscriminate approach would be both unwise and unfair. It would suggest to those thinking about coming here illegally that there will be no repercussions for such a decision. And this could lead to a surge in more illegal immigration. And it would also ignore the millions of people around the world who are waiting in line to come here legally.”

Two years later, the president ignored his own advice and granted an amnesty to the so-called “Dreamers.” Just as he predicted, we got a surge of more illegal immigration, specifically children whose parents believed there were no repercussions for breaking our laws.

So, here we are, trying to deal with this man-caused disaster on the southern border. Just three weeks ago, President Obama said he wanted to close a 2008 loophole that was being exploited by open borders advocates so that he could speed up deportations of unaccompanied minors. That would be a step in the right direction at least, but it seems Obama has flip-flopped yet again.

Far from closing that loophole, the president is planning to expand it. The geniuses at the White House put their heads together and came up with a way for the children of Central America to just skip that whole “illegal immigration” thing. Obama is reportedly considering an executive order allowing anyone under 21 in Central America to apply for refugee status at U.S. embassies and consulates in their home countries.

But even the left-wing New York Times notes, “Under American law, refugees are people fleeing their country of origin based on fears of persecution by reason of race, religion, nationality political opinion or membership in a particular social group.” It’s not at all clear how the White House’s latest plan meets that definition.

More importantly, where does it end? Do we open our doors, as Rep. John Lewis suggested, to the poor in every South American country? Africa and Asia too?

We already know that 65% of the unaccompanied minors who get here are granted asylum status, even though a recent government report determined that the vast majority of illegal immigrants said they are coming because of “the perception of U.S. immigration laws granting free passes or permisos to UAC (unaccompanied children) and adult females.” Are you prepared to take in 65% of Central America?

Compassion & The Rule Of Law

Earlier this week, author Stephen King took to Twitter to bash Christians and the Tea Party. King tweeted: “Revised Tea Party Gospel: ‘Suffer the little children come unto me. Unless they’re undocumented kids from Central America.” And, “Much easier to be a Christian when the little children aren’t in your backyard, isn’t it?”

Mr. King has some pretty big backyards attached to his homes in Bangor, Maine, and Sarasota, Florida. Unlike most Americans, he certainly has the resources to support a few additional families. How many could he take? Five, fifty or five hundred? I suspect he would soon find the limits of his compassion. Perhaps Mr. King should avoid political and religious commentary and stick to what he does best — writing scary fiction.

The rule of law is a Christian concept, which is on its firmest ground when the law is just. For a nation to have authority over its borders is just and necessary. That is what defines a nation.

A nation that does not have control of its borders risks being engulfed by war and humanitarian crises, while its citizens are buried with crushing taxes, failing schools and hospitals. No country can handle massive migration across unguarded borders.

As for the women and children who have been enticed to come here by left-wing rhetoric, they are subject to our laws. They should be, as promptly as possible, returned to their home countries. Until then, they deserve to be treated with dignity. Like all of us, they too are made in the image of God.

I would remind King that there are many Christian groups working on the border right now providing food and medical care to the individuals who have entered our country. Many more Christians support ministries that care for impoverished children and families overseas.

It is right to be compassionate to hurting people. At the same time, there is nothing unreasonable about insisting that your nation have definable borders and that the people, through their representatives, decide how many immigrants can be brought into the country through a legal process without overburdening its own citizens. Otherwise we risk breaking our economy and causing even more suffering in Central America and right here at home.

As you know, the Obama Administration imposed absurd travel restrictions on Israel Tuesday when the FAA banned flights into Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport. The ban was supposed to last only 24 hours, but the FAA renewed it yesterday.

Senator Ted Cruz blasted the restrictions, saying, “The facts suggest that President Obama has just used a federal regulatory agency to launch an economic boycott on Israel.” I too criticized them in yesterday’s daily report.

Tom Rose (of the Bauer & Rose Show), writing at Breitbart.com, took up the fight as well, quoting statements from Senator Cruz and my criticism of the FAA restrictions.

In case you missed it, I wrote that by tightening the screws on Israel, the administration was holding its tourism industry hostage. That was not just speculation. Even the Washington Post agrees, writing, “The United States on Wednesday put the most direct pressure yet on its ally Israel to cut short its military campaign against Hamas in Gaza.”

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg protested the FAA’s ban by boarding an El Al flight to Ben Gurion Airport. He was greeted at the airport by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a statement Bloomberg said, “The flight restrictions are a mistake that hands Hamas an undeserved victory and should be lifted immediately.” Michael Bloomberg and I don’t agree on much, but he got it right this time.

I’m pleased to report that the FAA backed down and lifted the travel ban just before midnight last night. I believe our pressure played a role. But make no mistake: This administration damaged Israel at a time when it is locked in a struggle against Hamas, one of the worst terror groups.

Iran’s “Final Solution” — Destroy Israel

I wrote yesterday that the fight taking place right now between Israel and Hamas is a fight between good and evil. As Winston Churchill once said, “I decline utterly to be impartial as between the fire brigade and the fire.” Why are we, as the Washington Post reports, putting direct pressure on our ally Israel to stop fighting evil?

Hamas does not want peace with Israel. It is refusing to negotiate or accept any ceasefire agreements. And why should it? All of the pressure is on Israel.

You won’t see stories about the Obama Administration putting pressure on Hamas or news reports about the State Department threatening to cut off foreign aid — your hard-earned tax dollars — to the Palestinian Authority. You won’t see those stories because Obama isn’t pressuring Hamas; he is pressuring Israel.

Land will not satisfy the Islamists’ bloodlust. Israel gave up Gaza, and look what Hamas has done to it — filled it with rockets and “terror tunnels.”

Hamas and its Islamofascist allies have one objective — to destroy the Jewish state. Discussing the current conflict in Gaza before an audience of students, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, said:

“The only solution is to destroy this regime. … What is the solution until this regime is destroyed? Allah willing, the day will come when this regime is destroyed. So long as this false regime is on its feet — what is the solution? The solution is total armed resistance against this regime. This is the solution.”

Speed Up, Slow Down, Do Nothing

If you want a good example of the gridlock in Washington, look no further than the dueling prescriptions for dealing with the current crisis at our southern border.

House Republicans released a list of recommendations yesterday largely focused on border security. Among their recommendations: Deployment of the National Guard, “aggressive messaging campaigns in originating countries and the U.S. to dispel immigration myths” and speeding up hearings and deportations to days and weeks rather than months, years or never. They are proposing to spend $1.5 billion, offset with spending cuts.

Senate Democrats offered a $2.7 billion bill with no policy changes that would allow for faster deportations. The Wall Street Journal notes that the Senate bill includes more than three times the amount of money to pay for lawyers for unaccompanied minors than the White House requested.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama is promising members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus that he will do everything he can to slow down or stop deportations of illegal immigrants.

Given the huge differences that exist between the House and Senate bills, the most likely outcome seems to be that Congress will do nothing anytime soon to address the crisis.

    Good vs. Evil

Earlier this week, Barack Obama stood on the White House lawn and addressed the conflict between Israel and Hamas. While he paid lip service to Israel’s right to self-defense, Obama then went on to express his “serious concerns about the rising number of Palestinian civilian deaths.”

Obama announced that Secretary of State John Kerry had been dispatched to the Middle East in order to “do everything he can to help facilitate a cessation to hostilities.  We don’t want to see any more civilians getting killed.” The implication of Obama’s comments is that Israel is unjustly killing civilians.

But it didn’t stop there. Taking advantage of Hamas’ violence and concerns raised by the downing of the Malaysian passenger jet in Ukraine, the FAA announced yesterday that it was banning flights to Tel Aviv after a Hamas rocket landed near Ben Gurion Airport. The European Union and other international airlines quickly joined the ban.

The insider consensus in Washington, and among my contacts in Israel, is that this was nothing more than the Obama White House tightening the screws on Israel. Kerry is in Middle East now pushing a misguided ceasefire plan. Tourism is a huge industry in Israel, and the administration appears to be holding it hostage.

Several commentators have noted that the FAA decision was the biggest victory Hamas has scored in this latest conflict. Israeli Transport Minister Yisrael Katz said, “They have given a prize to terror.” The problem is not Israeli security. The problem is Hamas.

As Israeli President Shimon Peres said, “The real answer is not to stop the flights but to stop the rockets.” That means stopping Hamas.

By the way, officials discovered Hamas rockets in a second U.N.-sponsored school yesterday. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Israelis turned out today for the funeral of Sgt. Max Steinberg, the second American citizen, lone soldier killed in the Gaza conflict.

Hamas is an Islamofascist organization. Israel is a pro-American democracy. In a war between good and evil, why are we pressuring good to stop fighting evil?

The Continued Assault On Religious Liberty

On Monday President Obama signed an executive order banning federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of “gender identity,” extending new legal protections to transgendered federal workers.

This order was the result of Obama’s “pen and phone” strategy of governing. The so-called “Employment Non-Discrimination Act” (ENDA) was a key demand of the radical homosexual rights movement. It passed the Senate last year, but is stalled in the House of Representatives. So Obama decided to act on his own.

This is a very sweeping order. As CBS News noted, “The executive order … impacts an estimated 28 million workers, or one-fifth of the U.S. workforce.”

Moreover, many federal contractors are in fact religious charities and faith-based organizations performing social services for the government. And despite pleas from religious leaders, Obama refused to include any exemptions for religious groups. Thanks to this new order, they will now be forced to accommodate transgendered and “transitioning” employees.

Just three weeks ago, the Supreme Court in its Hobby Lobby decision, made it clear that the government had to respect the religious liberty rights guaranteed in the First Amendment. The editors of National Review Online noted that Senate Democrats included a religious exemption in their ENDA bill. Why would the president not do the same?

    Scandal Update

News broke last night that IRS information technology specialists have informed congressional investigators that Lois Lerner’s hard drive was not as damaged as we have been led to believe. It was merely “scratched.”

In fact, IRS IT workers requested help from outside experts to make sure the information was recovered. But IRS managers refused their request.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp said this latest revelation only “raises more questions about potential criminal wrong doing at the IRS.”

    But wait…there’s more.

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen was back on Capitol Hill again this morning. Koskinen told members of Congress that the IRS Inspector General’s office has discovered some old backup tapes, which, evidently, were not recycled as we had been told. The tapes are being reviewed to determine what, if anything, is on them.

Meanwhile, a new report from the Government Accountability Office finds that Obamacare’s security features are woefully inadequate, leading to concerns that the program could be rife with fraud.

According to the GAO, undercover investigators using false names, fake Social Security numbers and made up income figures were able to secure taxpayer-funded Obamacare subsidies in 60% of their attempts.
