Shinseki Resigns. Now What?

VA Secretary Eric Shinseki submitted his resignation this morning. After meeting with Shinseki at the White House, President Obama told reporters, “With considerable regret, I accepted. We don’t have time for distractions. We need to fix the problem.”

While I agree that Shinseki needed to go, the Obama White House is counting on Democrats and the media to fall in line now and go back to ignoring a problem it has known about for at least five years. Brace yourself for all kinds of rhetoric about how decisive Obama has been and how he is taking charge.

But rhetoric doesn’t matter as much as the record, so let me remind you about Obama’s record.

  • After the 2008 election, the Bush transition team warned Obama about “data integrity issues” at the VA that were “delaying — and potentially denying — deserving veterans timely care.” Five years later, nothing has been done. Other warnings were ignored as well.
  • In 2009, Obama promised to merge medical histories from the Pentagon and the VA, enabling veterans to have “lifelong electronic medical records.” It was a billion-dollar disaster that turned out to be a preview of the disastrous Obamacare rollout.
  • In 2009, Obama signed the MOVE Act, designed to improve voting at overseas military bases. But a 2012 inspector general’s report found that the Obama Administration wasn’t complying with the law.

The Obama Administration seems to be better at causing problems than fixing them.

So, Shinseki is gone. Now what? Obama says we don’t have time for distractions, and he is vowing once again to fix the problem he knew about five years ago. Perhaps he was too distracted by his golf game or fundraisers or vacations to deal with it before.

In response to Eric Shinseki’s resignation, American Legion National Commander Daniel M. Dellinger, said: “It is not the solution, yet it is a beginning. …But it was never just about a few of the top leaders. The solution is to weed out the incompetence and corruption.”

Dellinger is absolutely right — big government incompetence and corruption is the problem. Sadly, this scandal is far from over. To underscore that point, a new report released today finds that “wait times were manipulated at more than 60 percent” of VA facilities.

    Carney Bails Too

It’s a big day for bailouts at the White House. Press Secretary Jay Carney resigned too. I hope he finds honest work after this. Carney had a fairly solid reputation prior to joining the Obama White House.

The press secretary’s job is a terrible job, especially under Republican presidents where the hostility begins immediately after the inauguration. But lately, Carney’s performance all too often crossed the line from defending his boss through the astute use of words to what many felt was out-right deception. Check out this example.

    What Difference Does It Make?

Hillary Clinton’s book, “Hard Choices,” is coming out soon, and we already know how she is going to handle the Benghazi scandal. Consider this quote from the chapter of her book on the Benghazi attacks:

“Those who exploit this tragedy over and over as a political tool minimize the sacrifice of those who served our country. I will not be a part of a political slugfest on the backs of dead Americans. It’s just plain wrong, and it’s unworthy of our great country. Those who insist on politicizing the tragedy will have to do so without me.”

Notice what Hillary is doing here. It’s the same faux outrage that the left has always done so well. Hillary appears to be taking the high ground, defending four dead Americans. She won’t defile their memory by getting into the mud with members of the “vast right-wing conspiracy.”

Clearly, the former first lady has learned a lot from her husband. After he defiled the Oval Office, he was able to turn conservatives into the issue rather than his own moral perfidy and illegal actions.

But why are Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty dead? She claims to be protecting their honor, but she wasn’t willing to protect their lives! It was her State Department that repeatedly refused requests for additional security.

What difference does it make? Hillary is partly responsible for the fact that four Americans died in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. And it could make a lot of difference as to whether she sits in the Oval Office. Explaining the truth to the American people is not “politicizing a tragedy.”

    The Tennessee Taliban?

Referring to pro-family, pro-life conservatives as the “American Taliban” is a favorite epithet among Obama supporters. It is being thrown around now by pro-abortion advocates in an absurd ad opposing a pro-life ballot initiative in Tennessee.

While commonsense restrictions to abortion are sweeping across the country, Tennessee has turned into a magnet for out-of-state abortions due to a radical state Supreme Court decision in 2000 that went beyond Roe v. Wade.

This November Tennessee residents will vote on Amendment One — a constitutional amendment that would restore balance to the law. If Amendment One passes, it would permit the state legislature, for example, to require abortion facilities to meet basic health and safety standards, to approve waiting periods or to require parental notification before a teenage girl can get an abortion.

To the left these overwhelmingly popular, commonsense limits are the equivalent of the Taliban’s barbaric policies and practices.

Ironically, the pro-abortion ad has divided the left. It is being blasted by some civil rights groups, and Muslims are especially upset because the ad features a man in a turban stomping on a woman. “What that automatically as a woman signals to me is I need to fear any man who has a turban on,” said Remziya Suleyman.

    Speaking Of The Taliban…

Unfair housing, voting and employment laws. Discriminatory taxes. Religious and legal prohibitions on intermarriage. Church burnings and other acts of violence committed with impunity. These were a few of the injustices that black Americans suffered in the American South for nearly a century through the mid-1960s.

Jim Crow was a wicked regime of state-sponsored segregation and discrimination that kept millions of citizens from fully participating in American society. Sadly, a version of Jim Crow has been resurrected — but this time, his targets are the ancient Christian populations of the Middle East.

    VA Scandal Explodes

There was an unusual late-night hearing on Capitol Hill last night as top officials from the Veterans Administration appeared before the House Veterans Affairs Committee. The hearing began at 7:30 p.m., just hours after the release of a damning inspector general’s report, and concluded just before midnight.

In addition to its findings of lost patients and outrageously long wait times, the report stated that 42 VA medical facilities are under investigation, up from 26 hospitals a week ago.

This latest IG report greatly eroded what little support VA Secretary Eric Shinseki had left on Capitol Hill. As of this writing, 16 House Democrats and eight Senate Democrats have publicly demanded Shinseki’s resignation.

Others, like Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), are calling for a criminal investigation of the VA by the Justice Department. Sen. Blumenthal said recently that there was “credible and specific evidence of criminal wrongdoing across the country in more than thirty places.”

Yesterday Rush Limbaugh reminded his audience of how Obama attacked doctors in 2009, accusing them without any evidence of needlessly cutting off people’s feet for profit.

Think about that for a moment. Obama smeared doctors to advance his agenda of a big government takeover of the private health care system. Now we find out what is going on in his VA. There’s no evidence of unnecessary surgeries, but there is plenty of evidence that many of our heroes who needed surgeries could not get them.

And what about that profit motive? As the inspector general’s report stated, the main reason for the falsified records and wait lists was so that the bureaucrats could get cash bonuses.

This sorry episode is more evidence of Obama’s big government, socialist mindset. He shamelessly attacked private sector doctors while promising that in the world of Obamacare, the government will do everything better, cheaper and with more compassion. The evidence is overwhelming that the government system is corrupt, but Obama continues to dissemble.

Obama Bombs . . . At West Point

President Obama used yesterday’s West Point graduation ceremony to unveil his latest foreign policy doctrine. It was not well received. CNN’s Jim Clancy said, “It was a philosophical speech. It was not a commander-in-chief speaking to his troops. And you heard the reception. I mean, it was pretty icy.”

The Washington Post, not exactly as bastion of right-wing thinking, was scathing in its criticism, accusing the president of “binding America’s hands on foreign affairs.” The Post added that in presenting his approach, “Mr. Obama marshalled a virtual corps of straw men…” I couldn’t agree more. Like his attack on doctors, Obama is frequently unable to make his case without questioning the motives of others.

For example, Obama was presumably referring to Iraq when he condemned “our willingness to rush into military adventures … without building international support and legitimacy for our action.” That absurd rhetoric suggests George W. Bush and our allies recklessly went to war. That is a popular misconception on the left, but it is untrue and Obama knows better. Congress approved the use of force in Iraq and Bush mustered a coalition twice the size Obama had for his military adventure in Libya.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan famously asked, “Are you better off today than you were four years ago? Here’s a new variation on that theme: Can you name a single country in the world that we have better relations with today than we did four years ago? We’ve alienated our friends and our enemies are on the march.

Remember Obama and Hillary’s famous “reset” with Russia? Vladimir Putin has reset the relationship on his terms. Obama said he wanted to pivot away from the Middle East and toward Asia. Well, China is snarling at us, seizing Japanese islands and sinking Vietnamese ships.

Obama began his administration by sending letters to Iran’s ayatollah, vowing to work with the Islamic Republic if it unclenched its fist. Iran seems to have clenched both fists with the ayatollah’s latest declaration that the jihad will only end when “society can get rid of the oppressors’ front with America at the head of it.”

For the most part, the left loves Obama’s foreign policy, and there are elements on the Paulian right that won’t fight it for their own reasons. But history has taught us that these kinds of feckless policies, often promoted with rhetoric about peace, inevitably make war more likely.

    American Exceptionalism

During his first overseas trip as president, Obama was asked in France about his view of American exceptionalism. He said, “I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.”

Everybody in that audience, and certainly the left-wing American foreign policy establishment, understood what that answer meant. It largely disregarded the concept of American exceptionalism.

As Ronald Reagan often stated, America has been mightily blessed and because of that we have obligations to defend the idea of freedom and to speak out for human rights, something Obama rarely does. Yesterday’s speech at West Point would have been a good opportunity for Obama to say something about Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, the Christian woman facing a death sentence in Sudan. He did not.

But with his foreign policy in disarray and his poll numbers falling, along with America’s standing in the world, Obama tried to recover by telling an audience of exceptional young men and women that the country they are serving is also exceptional. Yesterday, Obama told the West Point graduates, “I believe in American exceptionalism with every fiber of my being.”

How sad that he felt the need to stress that point. How sad his policies don’t reflect it.

    2nd Vote

During election years, you take time to research candidates and issues so you can cast an informed ballot when you vote. But you are also “voting” in other ways each and every day.

When you shop at a store or buy a cup of coffee, you’re “voting” for the values that store or company promotes. And as we have seen recently with the Benham brothers, Brendan Eich and Hobby Lobby, companies do have values!

I know many conservatives are frustrated that our tax dollars go to fund Planned Parenthood. But every day, many conservatives buy coffee unaware that some portion of their money goes to Planned Parenthood.

Now there’s an easy way for you to know what your dollars are supporting before you buy. Our friends at 2ndVote.com research the policies and values of major companies. They have also produced a great app that you can download and have with you wherever you go. And it’s free! Click here to learn more.

    End Of Day Report

    From: Gary L. Bauer

BREAKING NEWS: The VA Inspector General has released an interim report on the Phoenix VA health system. It found that more than 1,700 veterans were not included in the facilities records, and that patients were waiting at least 115 days for first appointments. Moreover, the report declared that “inappropriate scheduling practices are a systemic problem nationwide.”

    Obama’s Energy Prevention Agency

For decades economists, politicians, pundits, union leaders and many workers have lamented the decline of America’s manufacturing base. There is a lot that has contributed to the loss of these industries and the jobs they supported. But in recent years, there was hope of an industrial renaissance in America led by cheap energy.

That may not be the case for much longer. Obama’s EPA is preparing to unveil new cap and trade regulations next week. The details are murky, but the Chamber of Commerce released an economic impact study today based on ideas under consideration within the Obama Administration.

It estimates that more than one-third of coal power plants could be forced to shut down, eliminating 224,000 jobs and costing the economy $50 billion a year. TheWall Street Journal notes coal is “the cheapest and most plentiful source for power, providing 40% of the nation’s electricity.” But Obama’s EPA seems determined to eliminate that cheap and plentiful source of energy.

Cap and trade is such a radical idea that it failed to pass in 2010 when Democrats had a super-majority in the Senate. Now Obama is going to impose through regulation what he could not achieve through legislation.

Why? Because liberals have the audacity to believe that they can control the weather and stop global warming. In reality, it is about controlling you, and it’s far more likely to slam the breaks on economic growth. And you don’t have to take my word for it.

Michigan Democrat Rep. John Dingell once admitted that a carbon cap and trade scheme was “a great big tax.” Warren Buffett has called cap and trade a “huge tax” and a “regressive tax,” meaning it hurts the poor the most.

What might such a huge and regressive tax look like? Skyrocketing utility bills. Barack Obama promised that under his cap and trade plan “electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket” and it would also “bankrupt the coal industry.” Food prices could skyrocket too. And gas prices could double to $7.00 a gallon.

One more thing to remember in November.

    Jerusalem Day

Today is Jerusalem Day and Israelis are celebrating the reunification of Jerusalem. Before 1967, east Jerusalem was under the jurisdiction of Jordan. Jews and others were denied access to their most holy sites, including the Western Wall.

Of course, jihadists all over the region routinely announce that their goal is to again divide Jerusalem in half and, ultimately, for a united Jerusalem to serve as the capital of a new Palestinian state.

The Obama Administration has made it clear that it wants to divide Jerusalem. Why else would it object when the Israeli government builds homes for Israelis in eastern Jerusalem?

As celebrations began last night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made his views clear on this yet again. Speaking at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva, the prime minister said:

“Jerusalem is Yad Vashem, Jerusalem is Herzl’s burial place and the Mount of Olives… Jerusalem is also Mount Zion and Mount Moriah and the Western Wall, Jerusalem is Israel’s eternity, it is our heart, and we are guarding our heart — the heart of the nation. We will never divide our heart.”

We encourage Prime Minister Netanyahu to stand strong. If only our leaders shared his courage.

How is it that our president, secretary of state and left-wing groups like J Street, which claim to be pro-Israel, support a position that would force a future Israeli government to once again divide Jerusalem? If that happened, the whole world would see the likes of Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and Al Qaeda dancing in the streets of the holy city.

How can anyone not understand that, far from bringing peace, such a spectacle would only convince the Islamists that Allah is more powerful and reinforce their desire to drive every Jew out of the entire region?

Thousands of years ago, Solomon understood that if you loved a baby you couldn’t cut it in half. Prime Minister Netanyahu understands that the same wisdom applies to Jerusalem today.

    A Christian Abortionist?

There is something about late-term abortion that muddles moral reasoning. Kermit Gosnell, who performed late-term abortions in Pennsylvania, saved parts of the babies he dismembered and displayed them in jars. Now comes a story from Think Progress, a left-wing publication, praising late-term abortionist Willie Parker, who regularly flies from Chicago to Mississippi’s last remaining abortion facility.

Why is Think Progress so enthralled with Dr. Parker? Unbelievably, Dr. Parker cites “Christian compassion” as the reason he performs late-term abortions.

Performing abortions, Dr. Parker claims, “became this conviction of compassion in a spiritual sense of the deepest level of love that you can have for another person, that you can have compassion for their suffering and you can act to relieve it.”

Perhaps Dr. Parker missed a few verses in the Bible. How about Exodus 20:13? “You shall not murder.” There’s Deuteronomy 30:19, “… I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”

Moreover, he insists that he was inspired by a sermon on the good Samaritan by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. That is certainly a bizarre twist on a parable about helping those in need.

There is particular irony that Dr. Parker not only tries to drag God into his death dealing business, but that he tries to drag Dr. King into it too. Dr. King certainly believed in non-violence and there is nothing more violent than going after an innocent, unborn child in the womb.

There is added irony in that this abortionist is claiming that Dr. King would support something that is literally killing large numbers of black children. In 2012 more black babies were destroyed by abortion than were born in New York City.

Sadly, this doctor is no different than politicians like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden who claim they are devout Catholics while promoting abortion on demand at every opportunity.

What Happened To “Hope & Change”?

Liberals who love big government are losing their patience with the Obama Administration. (More on that below.) From the epic failure that was the launch of Obamacare to the VA scandal, there has been little change in the way government works (or doesn’t) and “hope” is the last thing Americans see in Washington, D.C.

In what some are calling the “Bagram Blunder,” the latest embarrassment involves this weekend’s leaking of the CIA’s top officer in Afghanistan. In announcing Obama’s surprise visit to Bagram Air Force Base Sunday, the White House accidently blasted the name of the CIA’s “chief of station” out to a nationwide media list of 6,000 individuals before someone at the Washington Post reported the error. Not surprisingly, the White House blamed it on the Pentagon.

When the Bush Administration “outed” a veteran CIA operative, Democrats demanded a special prosecutor and Scooter Libby went to jail on unrelated charges. This isn’t another scandal per se, but it is another example of this administration’s consistent, gross incompetence.

As former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton said, “In a White House that is filled with press flacks … was there no one who understood the significance of what they were doing? … This is utter incompetence.” Perhaps Obama’s campaign slogan of “hope and change” should have been “corruption and incompetence.”

The corruption is clear. From the IRS to the VA, a myriad of scandals is plaguing the Obama Administration. But the incompetence of this left-wing gang is routinely on display — from colossal failures like the Obamacare website to the infamous Syrian “red line.”

Obama has made numerous foreign policy mistakes that a student fresh out of Foreign Service school would know to avoid. As a result, he looks like a fool around the world and America’s credibility has been shattered.

    VA Turns To Private Sector

Here’s another embarrassment that is frustrating liberal Democrats. Attempting to address the growing scandal at more than two dozen VA hospitals across the country, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki announced over the weekend that the VA would allow veterans to get care at private hospitals.

What irony! Just as Obamacare begins to kick-in, a major government-run health care bureaucracy is turning to the private sector for help. In fact, several left-wing advocates for socialized health care pointed to the VA as their model!

    Obama, Democrats And Racism

Sparks flew during a Senate Commerce Committee hearing last week when the committee’s chairman, Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), said that Republicans opposed Obamacare because Barack Obama was “the wrong color.” It was the second time in recent weeks that Rockefeller has leveled that charge and Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) had had enough.

“That you would say that opposition to Obamacare necessarily must stream from some inherent racism? Very offensive,” Johnson said. “Listen, my opposition to health care has nothing to do with the race of President Obama. It is the greatest assault on our freedom in my lifetime.” You can watch the exchange here.

You can expect to hear more statements like Rockefeller’s in the days and weeks ahead. There is a sad history of Democrats playing the race card and especially so when their electoral prospects are not looking so good. It is a disgusting attempt to prey on people’s fears and scare minority voters to the polls.

This weekend, CNN’s John King reported that some members of Congress are “scathing” in their private remarks about Obama. They say he is “detached,” “flat-footed” and “even incompetent.”

If such comments came from conservatives, it would be cited as evidence of their racism. But the criticism is coming from Democrats, and no one is suggesting that they are racists.

Note To GOP: Pay Attention To England

Mainstream political parties suffered stunning defeats throughout much of Europe in last week’s elections for the European Parliament. One of the most notable insurgent victories occurred in England, where the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) finished first.

It succeeded in large part because it was rebelling against Great Britain’s Conservative Party which is no longer a Thatcherite party. UKIP’s victory marked the first time in more than 100 years that one of England’s two major parties failed to win a national election.

Prime Minister David Cameron has been unwilling to take on the immigration crisis, and like some in the GOP here, he tried to appeal to youth by endorsing same-sex marriage. After that endorsement, faith-driven resignations all over the country bedeviled the Conservative Party. Later on Cameron admitted, “If I’d known what it [the reaction to his same-sex marriage position] was going to be like, I wouldn’t have done it.”

How on earth did the leader of the Conservative Party not know that attacking an institution that dates back thousands of years would not go over well with conservative, morally-oriented voters?

I share this with you because GOP leaders don’t need to speculate about what will happen if they surrender or “moderate” on issues like immigration and marriage. All they have to do is look at what has happened to England’s Conservative Party.

Meanwhile, our friend Bill Kristol at The Weekly Standard argues that Republicans should not assume 2014 will be a “wave election” and that the GOP must stand for something.

Kristol writes, “The basic fact of 2014 is that GOP candidates are going to have to earn their victories. They can’t simply dog-paddle in place, or sit on their surfboards, waiting for the wave to sweep them to triumph. They’ll have to make the case for themselves and against their opponents, and will have to explain what policies they’ll advance in Congress that would improve the status quo.”

He’s right. Conservative candidates who want to win must make the case for smaller government, for the sanctity of life and traditional marriage, for a strong national defense and a smart foreign policy. Making the conservative case to voters is more likely to generate enthusiasm at the base that will make 2014 the wave election we hope for.

    Obama Failed To Impress

Evidently I wasn’t the only one unimpressed by Barack Obama’s press conference yesterday. His remarks about the VA scandal left even many in the sympathetic pro-Obama media scratching their heads.

CNN’s Drew Griffin, the reporter who broke the story about the Phoenix VA’s secret wait lists, said:

“I was a little caught off-guard by what apparently is a disconnect between what is happening out here in the country and what the president is talking about. I hate to be curt, but … this problem is real. It exists and it really doesn’t have to be studied… And to say you are now going to wait for more studies… I was a little confused by the president’s remarks today. …We are five years into his presidency and the problem seems to be certainly not better, perhaps even worse.”

National Journal’s Ron Fournier called the White House’s response “pathetic.” Fournier added, “The president came into office knowing this was a systemic problem. …What did he do? Like he’s done with a lot of other things — he didn’t pay attention, he didn’t govern. Now he’s holding nobody accountable.”

The criticism wasn’t limited to members of the media. Even Democrat members of Congress were outraged. Rep. David Scott (D-GA) was so upset, he took to the House floor and took aim at both President Obama and VA Secretary Eric Shinseki. During a debate yesterday on a bill giving Shinseki more power to fire career bureaucrats, Rep. Scott said:

“The first person we need to fire is the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Mr. Shinseki himself. …I listened to the president today, and I was very disappointed with President Obama today. There was no urgency. Mr. President, we need urgency, we need you to roll up our sleeves and get into these hospitals!

“Reports are out that the taxpayers have paid out $1 billion for medical malpractice … because the VA cut off the wrong arm, the wrong leg, the wrong testicle, the wrong kidney. …We don’t have time for many more investigations. The reports are in!”

Leaders of veterans organizations expressed their frustration too. American Legion National Commander Daniel M. Dellinger said, “The question is this: if the administration has known about these issues for at least four years, why is it just now taking action? …Words are nice, and even somewhat comforting, but when will the VA’s house be cleansed of those who are soiling it and dishonoring the system?”

Paul Rieckhoff of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America said, “The president’s remarks today were a tremendous disappointment to America’s newest generation of veterans. He did nothing to quell the growing nationwide VA controversy. His long-overdue remarks gave outraged IAVA members no reason to believe anything will change at the VA anytime soon… Speeches and excuses will not solve this problem.”

Al Qaeda Is NOT On The Run

How many times have Barack Obama and his surrogates assured us that Al Qaeda has been decimated and is on the run? It would be nice if it was true. A lot of well-meaning people believed it. In fact, James Comey, Obama’s choice to lead the FBI, did believe it.

According to a New York Times report this week, Director Comey “brought to the job a belief, based on news media reports, that the threat from Al Qaeda was diminished.” In other words, Comey trusted the Obama Administration’s spin, and wanted to shift the FBI’s focus away from terrorism and “into more traditional criminal prosecutions.”

Now here’s the title of the New York Times story: “At FBI, Change In Leaders Didn’t Change Focus On Terror.” Why not? Once confirmed as director of the FBI, Comey learned the truth. Consider this excerpt:

“But nine months into his tenure as director, Mr. Comey acknowledges that he underestimated the threat the United States still faces from terrorism. ‘I didn’t have anywhere near the appreciation I got after I came into this job just how virulent those affiliates had become,’ Mr. Comey said, referring to offshoots of Al Qaeda in Africa and in the Middle East… ‘There are both many more than I appreciated, and they are stronger than I appreciated.’

“Based on what he now knows, Mr. Comey said, he is convinced that terrorism should remain the main focus of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

As it turns out, there has been an intense fight within the Obama Administration regarding the threat from Al Qaeda. Many in the intelligence community believe the threat is growing and worry the Obama White House is trying to “wish away things on a timetable.”

But the problem is worse than simply wishing things away. Obama is too busy defending Islam, ignoring the history of jihad and bashing Israel to deal with the growing threat from Islamists.

    Syrian Jihadists Coming To America

Here is a prime example of the threat: Intelligence officials believe as many as 100 Americans, perhaps more, have joined radical Islamists fighting Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria. Now they are coming back to the U.S., and we don’t know where all of them are.

One intelligence official said, “We know where some are. The concern is the scale of the problem we are dealing with.”

That scale far exceeds just 100 individuals. Aaron Zelin is a terrorism expert who tracks jihadists and has catalogued all major plots against the West in the past 20 years. Zelin said:

“…there are up to 3,000 European citizens from countries that have visa waivers with the United States who have also joined the jihad in Syria. This is why so many Western counter-terrorism officials are so worried, it’s much easier to get into our country with a Western passport.”

    The Left’s Oppression Nostalgia

The claim that conservatives want to take the country back to some bygone era undergirds liberal talking points on most political and cultural issues, particularly those related to race, women, organized labor, and gay rights. But the way liberals talk about these issues shows that it is they, not conservatives, who are nostalgic for the past.

Radical Islam’s War On Christian Women

Meriam Yahya Ibrahim, a married 27 year-old woman, was recently sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery by a Sudanese court. How can a married woman be guilty of adultery? Sudan, which is governed by radical Islamic or Sharia law, refuses to recognize Meriam’s marriage to her Christian husband, Daniel Wani, an American citizen. Under Sharia law, a Muslim woman cannot marry a Christian, and Meriam is considered to be a Muslim because her father was.

And because her husband is a Christian, the judge refused to recognize Daniel’s parental rights and threw her 20 month-old son, Martin, in jail with her. By the way, Meriam is eight-months pregnant. Oh, and she’s also been sentenced to death because she refuses to convert to Islam. The court has delayed the death sentence until she gives birth, which could be any day.

That, friends, is a real war on women. Have you heard anything from Obama about that? Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy is demanding a DNA test before it will help Wani gain access to his imprisoned son.

It is also a war on Christians. Remember the kidnapped girls in Nigeria? They were from Christian families. As a result, radical Islamists abducted them, forcibly converted some of them to Islam and are now threatening to sell others as sex slaves.

I hope you hear more about Meriam’s plight in the days ahead. Members of Congress, including Senators Roy Blunt (MO) and Kelly Ayotte (NH), and Representatives Trent Franks (AZ) and Frank Wolf (VA), are demanding action. America’s pastors need to speak up too.

    It’s Obama’s VA — Period.

This morning news broke that the number of VA hospitals under investigation for falsified records and delayed care has “more than doubled in recent days.” The Associated Press reports that 26 VA facilities are being investigated nationwide.

Amid growing outrage, Barack Obama finally stepped forward today and addressed the scandal. He was full of bluster. Obama said, “If the allegations prove to be true, I will not tolerate it. Period.”

Right. And you can keep your current health care plan. Period.

What does Obama mean by “If”? The VA already admits that at least 23 veterans died as a result of delayed care.

We heard this faux outrage before about Benghazi and the IRS, which he now says are “phony scandals.” Obama thinks we are dumb, and he is counting on the media to cover for him and move on in time.

While acknowledging that problems at the VA have existed for years, Obama said today that he has boosted VA funding “to record levels.” But throwing more money at the problem led to more corruption. And that’s the real problem, folks, corruption.

Corruption at the IRS. An overly-politicized Justice Department. Stonewalling on Fast and Furious. A blockade on information about Benghazi. Repeated Obamacare fiascos — from failed websites to people paid to do nothing.

No one ever gets held accountable, so it is no surprise that things at the VA only got worse.

Obama said that he is ultimately responsible for what happens on his watch. That’s easy for him to say. He’s not about to resign. He doesn’t have to face the voters again.

But in 167 days, members of his party do. If voters want responsibility for what has happened at the VA since Obama has been in charge, they will have to hold Obama’s Democrat allies responsible at the ballot box this November.

    Kudos To Pat Sajak

The left is going after my friend Pat Sajak. Monday evening he dared to question the prevailing liberal orthodoxy when he tweeted, “I now believe global warming alarmists are unpatriotic racists knowingly misleading for their own ends. Good night.”

It’s rare that anyone in Hollywood is willing to take a conservative stand and make it so forcefully. I admire Sajak’s courage. Besides, he’s right.

The Obama Administration, because of its global warming alarmism, is restricting energy investment in Africa, which many poor nations desperately need to feed, house and clothe their people.

Sure, the White House has a “Power Africa” initiative. But it is pushing “green energy alternatives,” and we know how well those stimulus-funded boondoggles turned out here. Meanwhile, it is largely ignoring the massive reserves of coal, oil and natural gas that can found on the continent and refuses to promote or aid in its development.

Join me in retweeting Pat’s Tweet to raise awareness about the hypocrisy of the left on the issue of climate change.

Former DNC Chair Wants To Kick You Out

During a recent stump speech for a Colorado congressional candidate, former Democratic National Committee Chairman and presidential hopeful Howard Dean revealed what he really thinks about conservatives and Republicans.

Dean called the Tea Party “a dangerous group of people who want to take away our fundamental democracy.” But Dean was just getting warmed up. Here’s what he said about conservatives who support voter ID laws:

“The price of living in a democracy is to do something political every single day. …And if you don’t, then you get people who are willing to take away your right to vote by these voter ID laws…  This is a Republican Party that has decided they like power so much that they think it’s okay to win by taking away the right to vote. They are not American. They could be more comfortable in the Ukraine or Russia. But stay away from our country…”

Was Dean smoking something before he gave that speech in Colorado? No. He was merely reflecting the growing effort by the left to demonize, marginalize and ostracize the half of the country that is conservative.

By the way, 70% of Americans, including 55% of Democrats and even 51% of blacks, support voter ID laws.

    VA Scandal Grows

Congress may need yet another select committee — one to investigate the scandal at the Veterans Administration. Almost every day it seems another whistleblower steps forward with allegations of abuse, mismanagement and neglect of our heroes. Here are the latest developments:

  • Add Albuquerque, New Mexico, to the growing list of VA medical centers across the country that are investigating the falsification of documents and wait times. An investigation at the Albuquerque VA Medical Center was launched last year — well before the dozens of possible deaths at the Phoenix VA system began making headlines. The Albuquerque Journal suggests that some bureaucrats may have been falsifying records in order to secure performance bonuses.
  • While news of 40 deaths at the Phoenix VA system grabbed the nation’s attention, Stars & Stripes reports that the VA has settled more than 160 malpractice claims since 2001 related to delayed treatment. The VA admits that 23 people died as result of delayed care.
  • Yesterday another whistleblower came forward. Dr. Margaret Moxness was a psychiatrist at the Huntington VA Medical Center in Charleston, West Virginia. Dr. Moxness says she was ordered to delay treatment of some of her patients, and at least two committed suicide as a result of not receiving the care they needed. Like other whistleblowers, Dr. Moxness says she complained to supervisors, but adds that she was “functionally silenced.”
  • Problems at the VA have existed for years. But why are we just now hearing about it? If the VA had its way, we wouldn’t be and that may be a scandal all by itself. The VA is perhaps the worst government agency to work for when it comes to whistleblowers.
Stephen Kohn, executive director of the National Whistleblower Center, said that VA whistleblowers routinely face retaliation and, “The VA is notoriously bad, and institutionally bad, and no one has taken any steps to fix it.”

Tom Devine of the Government Accountability Project says that the VA is “uniquely intolerant to well-taken whistleblowing.” Devine adds, “It’s almost the bureaucracy’s lowest common denominator, both in terms of quality of performance and in terms of secrecy enforced by repression.”

As the scandal grows and we find out more, we need to remember that there are thousands of dedicated doctors, nurses and health care workers in the VA system who are trying to do their jobs. My father accessed VA hospitals for years. This scandal is not an indictment of those healthcare workers, some of whom are coming forward now. It is an indictment of the bureaucrats who refused to admit that the system was failing and who put their own interests ahead of those of our heroes.

What Did Obama Know And When?
It’s never a good sign when Watergate references start popping up, but people are beginning to ask, “What did the president know and when did he know it?” And if you believe White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, Obama first learned about the problems at the VA from news reports, the same time we all did.

Carney has got to come up with a better excuse. From the IRS scandal to Fast and Furious, this plea of ignorance has been used too many times. Here are the facts:

  • Obama campaigned against the “deplorable conditions at some VA hospitals” in 2007, and promised to be a president who would fight for our veterans “every hour of every day.” Yet another broken promise.
  • A year later after the 2008 election, the Bush Administration warned Obama’s transition team about problems at the VA. Briefing memos obtained by the Washington Times stated ominously, “This is not only a data integrity issue in which [Veterans Health Administration] reports unreliable performance data; it affects quality of care by delaying — and potentially denying — deserving veterans timely care.”
That was five years ago, folks. Now, let’s be fair: No one is accusing Obama of creating the mess at the VA. But he clearly ignored it. Why would he do that? Politics.

Obama and his party were in the middle of attempting to pass Obamacare — a massive government takeover of the private health care industry. The last thing they needed was a potential scandal exposing the failures of . . . government-run health care.

Sarah Palin deserves another tip of the hat. She was mocked for warning that government control of health care inevitably leads to bureaucrats deciding who lives and who dies. That is exactly what some people in VA appear to have done.

  • Exactly one year ago tomorrow, Rep. Jeff Miller, chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, wrote a letter to President Obama about the VA. Miller warned about “management failures, deceptions, and lack of accountability permeating VA’s healthcare system,” and added, “I believe your direct involvement and leadership is required.”

Obama knew. He knew long before the rest of us did. And he did nothing. Well, not exactly. He did his usual con job of forcing someone out who was already on his way out. VA Under Secretary Robert Petzel, who “resigned” Friday, had announced his retirement in September.
