Benghazi Bombshell

There is new evidence connecting the White House to the Benghazi scandal. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by Judicial Watch uncovered an email from White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes labeled “PREP CALL.”

In it Rhodes outlined the goals the Obama White House had for then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice during her upcoming Sunday talk show appearances. One goal listed was “to underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy.”

The Obama White House has repeatedly pinned the blame for that lie on the CIA and the intelligence community. But the Pentagon’s top brass told Barack Obama on September 11th that Benghazi was not a “protest rooted in an Internet video.”

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) correctly says Rhodes’ email “demonstrates for the first time that the direction on the talking points came directly out of the White House.” Tomorrow the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold another hearing on the Benghazi scandal, and the Rhodes’ email is certain to be a major topic of debate.

My friends, as the evidence of political manipulation and corruption mounts, the odds increase that we can hold people accountable. And those odds will increase dramatically if we control both the House and the Senate after the November elections!

Please stand with CWF now so we can take back the Senate and hold Obama accountable!

The System Is Rigged

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal released this morning has some disturbing stats on the increasing alienation of the American people from our major institutions.

The poll measured the public’s degree of confidence in major institutions including the military, the federal government, public schools and corporations. And it asked respondents whether they agreed that “The economic and political systems in the country are stacked against people like me.”

Not surprisingly, few Americans expressed much confidence in large corporations, health insurance companies, the government, public schools or the big banks. The U.S. military scored well. But give Obama a few more years to continue his purge of officers and to push his politically correct agenda, and I fear confidence in our Armed Forces may erode too.

In addition, 55% of Americans agreed that the economic and political systems are stacked against them. The left-wing talking heads on the morning news shows heralded these results as good news for Obama. “This is Barack Obama’s economic message,” they claimed.

Actually, I think the numbers are bad news for the left generally. Who runs those systems? The “system” that prevails in America is largely a creature of the left!

While the GOP gets tarred and feathered as the party of big business and the party of Wall Street, corporate chieftains and the leadership of major institutions tend to be liberal elites. The chairmen of large multi-national corporations may not like higher taxes, but they embrace most other liberal assumptions. The health insurance companies embraced Obamacare. Education is dominated by the left — from major universities to, all too often, the local public schoools.

Hollywood, which dominates our culture, is constantly pumping out trash and polluting the minds of our children with moral relativism. Many parents watch their TVs with their hands gripping remotes in fear, ready to switch the channel at a moment’s notice in case anything inappropriate for young children might come on. And inevitably it does. It’s not always the content of show or movies either. The commercials produced by major corporations often push the boundaries of decency.

Ask Americans if manger scenes in the public square should be legal, if God should remain in the Pledge of Allegiance and on our currency, if voters should be required show an ID, if marriage should remain the union of one man and one woman, if our borders should be secured — and the numbers will be off the charts.

Yet no matter what the people do to promote and vote for those ideas, it is often struck down by left-wing judges and mocked by liberal elites.

Millions of Americans think the system is rigged because increasingly it is. Think about the people of California who TWICE voted to keep marriage as the union of one man and one woman only to have liberal elites throw out their votes like toilet paper! This is now happening all over the country.

The alienation of average Americans from major institutions in our lives is not healthy for our constitutional republic. The way to end that alienation is to end the liberal domination of every aspect of our lives. The GOP has a great opportunity if it can find its voice.

A Trampoline To Space?

One of Obama’s “gifts” to America in the last two years has been to essentially gut our space program. As a result, we are now in the position of having to pay a fare — $60 million per astronaut — for Russian rockets to take them to the International Space Station.

When Obama yesterday imposed additional sanctions on Russia in response to continued aggression in Ukraine, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin shot back, “I propose that the United States delivers its astronauts to the [International Space Station] with the help of a trampoline.” The humiliations under “O” never stop.

Kerry’s Kerfuffle

As we reported yesterday, while Israelis were in the midst of somber observances for Holocaust Remembrance Day, news broke that Secretary of State John Kerry had said that Israel was at risk of becoming an “apartheid state” unless it acquiesced to the creation of a Palestinian state.

That was is an incredibly offensive comment given the historical background of the modern state of Israel. The modern Jewish state emerged in 1948 out of the ashes of the Holocaust — the horrific consequences of Adolf Hitler’s “apartheid state” in Nazi Germany.

For America’s chief diplomat, whose every word is parsed for meaning, to suggest that the administration fears Israel is heading down the path of apartheid South Africa is beyond obscene.

If Kerry is so concerned about the creation of apartheid states in the Middle East, he should direct his comments to Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and Al Qaeda. A future Palestinian state is virtually guaranteed to be an “apartheid state,” meaning “Jew free.”

Leading pro-Israel groups from the right and left blasted Kerry. Abraham Foxman, director of the Anti-Defamation League, said Kerry’s apartheid comment was “startling and deeply disappointing.” The American Israel Public Affairs Committee said, “Any suggestion that Israel is, or is at risk of becoming, an apartheid state is offensive and inappropriate.”

The Emergency Committee for Israel, led by my friend Bill Kristol, issued a statement saying in part, “It is no longer enough for the White House to clean up after the messes John Kerry has made. It is time for John Kerry to step down as Secretary of State, or for President Obama to fire him.”  On Capitol Hill the condemnation of Kerry’s comment was immediate and bi-partisan. California Senator Barbara Boxer (D) called the remark “nonsensical and ridiculous.” Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) tweeted, “Inflammatory rhetoric comparing Israel’s democracy to repugnant apartheid policy is irresponsible, inaccurate and counterproductive.”

Alaska Senator Mark Begich (D) said, “…it’s not productive to express his frustration in this way…” Referring to the recent “unity agreement” between Fatah and Hamas, Begich added, “Last time I checked, the U.S. didn’t negotiate with terrorist organizations and we shouldn’t expect the Israeli government to either.”

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said, “Reports that Secretary Kerry has suggested Israel is becoming an apartheid state are extremely disappointing. … I hope that President Obama will … call on Secretary Kerry to apologize to the Israeli government and people.”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) demanded Kerry’s resignation. In a speech on the Senate floor, Cruz said, “Secretary Kerry has thus proven himself unsuitable for his position and that before any further harm is done to our alliance with Israel, he should offer President Obama his resignation and the president should accept it.”

From the State Department, Kerry issued a press release doubling down on a two-state solution and pushing back against his critics. Kerry said:

“I will not allow my commitment to Israel to be questioned by anyone, particularly for partisan, political purposes… I have been around long enough to also know the power of words to create a misimpression, even when unintentional, and if I could rewind the tape, I would have chosen a different word…”

Unfortunately, you cannot “rewind the tape,” and this is not the first time that Kerry’s remarks have undermined the U.S./Israeli alliance. Senator Cruz is right — Kerry is unsuitable for his position and should step down before he does any more damage.

More Bad News For Barack

If John Kerry had not created enough indigestion at the Obama White House, today’s ABC News/Washington Post poll will surely have them reaching for the Maalox. Here are some highlights of the results:

  • Obama’s approval rating has fallen five points in the past three months. Just 41% of registered voters approve of Obama’s job performance, a record low for the ABC/Post poll, while 55% disapprove.
  • In spite of claims about high enrollment, the American people are less than impressed with Obamacare — 59% of registered voters disapprove of Obama’s implementation of the so-called “Affordable Care Act,” while only 36% of voters approve.
  • 69% of voters feel the country is on the wrong track, while just 28% say it is on the right track.
  • Democrats have tried to console themselves by arguing that Obama remains more popular than Congress. But, when asked whether it was better to have Democrats control Congress in order to support Obama’s agenda or to have Republicans in control of Congress to check his agenda, voters preferred a GOP Congress by a whopping 14-point margin.

By the way, these were the results from a poll that oversampled Democrat voters by nine points (32% Democrat, 23% Republican, 38% Independent). In 2012, Democrats had only a six-point advantage.

Nevertheless, we cannot afford to take anything for granted. Democrat committees are outraising their GOP counterparts. Left-wing special interest groups will stop at nothing to maintain their hold on power.

Please stand with me now so we have the resources to stop Obama’s destruction of America!

    Remembering And A Warning

All over Israel this morning, everybody and everything stopped. Each year on Holocaust Remembrance Day the Jewish state observes two minutes of silence to remember the horror and to pledge “Never again.”

Unbelievably, as Israelis were preparing for Remembrance Day, Secretary of State John Kerry warned that Israel could become an “apartheid state” if it does not cave in to demands to carve out a Palestinian state from Judea and Samaria. Leave it to the Obama Administration to find a way to smear Israel.

Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a warning. Recalling how the world did not want to face the truth about Hitler and his Nazi regime in the years leading up to World War II, Netanyahu suggested that the same self-deception is taking place today about Iran. Then, in remarks aimed at Obama and Europe, the prime minister made this plea:

“I call on leaders of the world powers to insist on a full dismantling of Iran’s capability to manufacture nuclear weapons, and to persist until this goal is achieved.”

    He finished with this warning:

“In any event, the people of Israel are strong. When faced with an existential threat, the situation of our people today is entirely different than it was during the Holocaust. Now we have great power to defend ourselves. On behalf of the Jewish people, I say to all those who still seek to destroy us: you have failed and you will fail. Israel is a state that seeks peace with all its neighbors — a state with a will of iron to ensure the future of its people.”

    Democrat Donor In Race Scandal

Billionaire Donald Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, is making headlines. His girlfriend recorded a phone conversation in which Sterling allegedly complained that she was bringing black people, including former LA Lakers star Magic Johnson, to his games. Here are some excerpts of his remarks:

“It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to? … You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want.  The little I ask you is not to promote it … and not to bring them to my games. … Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see…  And don’t bring him to my games.”

While traveling in Asia yesterday, President Obama was asked about the controversy and offered this response: “The owner is reported to have said some incredibly offensive racist statements that were published. I don’t think I have to interpret those statements for you; they kind of speak for themselves.”

Indeed they do. And Sterling is creating a bit of a PR problem for the left. As it turns out, Sterling’s only campaign donations have gone to Democrats, and he has given lavishly to the NAACP.

In fact, Sterling was scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award from the NAACP next month. But given his history of racial issues, some have suggested that Sterling’s generosity may have been less than sincere.

We call on every Democrat who took money from Sterling to donate it to a charity that actually helps minorities. If Sterling were a conservative, the media would be in full-throated attack mode. We don’t have to speculate about that.

I remember well what happened to Marge Schott, the late owner of the Cincinnati Reds. Schott was a conservative who made a disgusting statement that sounded pro-Hitler and was quickly forced to sell her stake in the team.

The Karl Marx Of Our Day

You can tell a lot about a movement by what gets its members excited. Conservatives eagerly await new books from Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity about America’s greatness or promoting liberty by shrinking government. Books about Reagan always sell like hotcakes.

Right now, there’s one book that has captured the imagination of our leftist adversaries — Thomas Piketty’s “Capital in the Twenty-First Century.” It’s nearly 700 pages long and sits atop Amazon’s best-sellers list. In fact, it is such a hit that Amazon is currently out of stock. The reviews are glowing. New York magazine labeled Piketty a “rock-star economist” and an “intellectual superstar.”

So what exactly is it all about? As one columnist put it, “It seems fair to say that [Piketty’s] book aims to do for the left today what Karl Marx’s Capital — Das Kapital in the original German — did for the left in the 19th century.”

As you likely guessed, Piketty is a full-throated socialist. He teaches at the Paris School of Economics, previously worked for the French Socialist Party and writes for the socialist Liberation.  But you’d be hard-pressed to get any of that information from the mainstream media.

His economic solutions, however, clearly expose his ideology. For example, Piketty argues for an 80% tax rate on incomes starting around $500,000. Taxing the rich makes for an easy sound bite. But economically, it doesn’t raise a lot of money. Piketty knows this. His goal is “to put an end to such incomes.”

To generate real revenue for the socialist state, Professor Piketty writes that we will need at least a 50% tax rate on incomes as low as $200,000. And that’s just the beginning. Piketty advocates seizing wealth with an annual asset tax of 10% on billionaires and “a one-time assessment as high as 20% on much lower levels of existing wealth,” much along the lines of the “savings tax” that was proposed in Cyprus last year.

And this is what has the left so excited — confiscating wealth and growing big government.

BREAKING NEWS: News outlets are reporting that Russian jets today crossed into Ukrainian airspace. Also Washington is buzzing with reports that Vladimir Putin has broken off all talks with the White House and that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel cannot get his phone calls to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu returned. Let’s see what the weekend brings, but Obama’s weakness may just push us into a war that nobody wants.

An Inarticulate Rancher vs. Big Bad Government

Did you hear what Cliven Bundy said about Barack Obama? He said Obama was “articulate” and “clean.” Oh, wait — that was Joe Biden.

Bundy said that Obama was “light-skinned” and spoke with no “Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” I’m sorry — that was Harry Reid.

He used the “n” word, right? Well, not that “n” word, but the late West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd used to.

Yesterday, the New York Times broke a story that implied Bundy was a racist. “I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” Bundy said. After lamenting the condition of many poor blacks today, he asks rhetorically, “And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life … or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

Armed with these insensitive and racist statements, liberal reporters rushed to put Republicans on the record. Predictably, the politicians ran for the tall grass.

Bundy’s statement is inartful and ignorant . . . but that has nothing to do with the dispute he has with the federal government. He also said a lot more (here and here) than what the Times printed.

By the way, this is the same New York Times that for months could not find one hateful word worth reporting from racist and anti-Semite Jeremiah Wright’s sermons, even though Barack Obama described him as a mentor and dedicated a book to him. This is the same New York Times that only reluctantly covered the violent extremists in the Occupy Wall Street movement once they could no longer ignore it.

The thousands of Americans who rallied to Cliven Bundy did not do so because of his views on race relations or slavery. They rallied against an out-of-control government that was pointing military-grade weapons at American citizens and setting up so-called “free speech zones” over a dispute involving cattle grazing.

The left lost that PR war. Now, sadly, Cliven Bundy’s rhetoric has given the left the opportunity to do to conservatives what it always does — not defeat our ideas, but instead smear us all as bigots, extremists and Neanderthals. It is worth remembering that they did the very same thing to Rep. Paul Ryan just a few weeks ago when his words were free of any racial insensitivity.

    Republicans Fight Obama’s Lawlessness

The fight in Congress against the Obama Administration’s lawlessness is quickening.

Yesterday 22 Senate Republicans sent a letter to President Obama blasting his latest attempt to gut our immigration laws. Consider these excerpts:

“We write to express our grave concerns over the immigration ‘enforcement review’ that you ordered… the changes under consideration would represent a near complete abandonment of basic immigration enforcement and discard the rule of law and the notion that the United States has enforceable borders. …
“Since 2009, your administration has issued policy directives and memoranda incrementally nullifying immigration enforcement… These policies have operated as an effective repeal of duly enacted federal immigration law…
“Our entire constitutional system is threatened when the Executive Branch suspends the law at its whim and our nation’s sovereignty is imperiled when the commander-in-chief refuses to defend the integrity of its borders.”

How would the left react if a future conservative president decided to undo Obamacare by executive order? Or ignore parts of the tax code he did not like? What if he told state attorney generals that laws permitting abortion were unconstitutional and should not be defended in court?

How much lawlessness are we supposed to overlook?

    The Face of Radical Islam

Yesterday, an Afghan security guard opened fire at a hospital in western Kabul, killing three American doctors. They were working at the CURE International Hospital, a Christian charity dedicated to “healing the sick and proclaiming the kingdom of God.”

To one radical Islamist, no amount of good deeds could make up for the fact that these American doctors were “infidels” who deserved death.

Speaking of Islamists, Sheik Mostafa Elazabawy, the imam of Masjid Manhattan, is protesting a film scheduled to be shown at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Like some in the Obama Administration, he objects to the fact that the film refers to the 9/11 terrorists as “Islamists” and says they were waging “jihad.”

All you need to know about this film is that it was narrated by NBC’s Brian Williams. There is no way one of America’s most prominent politically correct media elites would do anything to offend Islam. A spokesman for Williams confirmed as much, saying, “Brian did not take the request to narrate this film lightly and, after receiving a script from the museum, asked two leading experts to carefully review the wording.”

As retired Fire Deputy Chief Jim Riches, whose son, Jimmy (also a firefighter) died at World Trade Center, put it: “The fact is, 19 people who were Muslims did come and crash planes that killed 3,000 Americans. There’s no getting around that.”

    Rand Paul On Life

Virtually every conservative activist I talk to or hear from is sick of RINOs — Republicans In Name Only — who will not fight for the values the party represents. A lot of well-meaning conservatives think Senator Rand Paul is THE guy for 2016. But if any of them care about values issues, they should think twice.

Senator Paul was interviewed this week by David Axelrod at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics. Not surprisingly, Axelrod prodded Paul on the sanctity of life. While Paul accurately described the problem with America’s current legal regime, which permits abortion-on-demand, when asked what he would do as president, he said this:

“My religious and personal belief is that life begins at the very beginning… I think that persuasion is part of this. I think the country is somewhere in the middle and we’re not changing any of the laws until the country is persuaded otherwise.”

That is more than a disappointing answer. It is a signal of surrender.

Notice that Paul answered the question purely in terms of political strategy. He did not spend one second trying to persuade his audience (the very thing he says must be done first) that women are exploited by abortion and babies are deprived of their God-given right to life.

What Paul is doing on values issues is the same thing the GOP establishment does — he is treating the sanctity of life like a problem to be managed rather than a cause worth fighting for.

Sadly, this is not the first time Paul has done this. When asked about efforts to redefine marriage last month, Paul said that the GOP will have to “agree to disagree on social issues” and that some voters don’t want to be “festooned by those issues.”

To his credit, Paul will fight for his libertarian agenda of smaller government and less spending — and I am all for that. But his position on values amounts to a slow-motion surrender.

It takes a lot less persuasion to defend the humanity of an unborn baby than it does to defend tax cuts for billionaires or to argue that your mother’s Social Security check is too big. On life and marriage, the public is at worst evenly divided.

Paul is willing to fight for some dubious things — massive cuts in defense spending, for example, and retreat in the war on drugs. But on life and marriage he continues to waiver.

    Speaking Of Values…

Forty-five people were shot in Chicago over Easter weekend. Nine were killed. Five kids between the ages of 11 and 15 were shot while playing in a park.

Reacting to the violence, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said, “The values that we teach our children when we hold them and read to them are timeless. They’re about right and wrong. They’re about knowing good from bad. They serve as your compass as your guide. This is our home. These streets don’t belong to the gang-bangers.”

It’s good that the mayor took the opportunity to address values. But what he did not address, and what many so-called “black leaders” refuse to address, is the breakdown of the black family.

I am convinced that if Martin Luther King, Jr., were alive today, he would be weeping over what has happened to his people. In some ways, the black family was much stronger when he was alive than it is today. Civil rights laws are stronger today, but families have been weakened.

Character is formed in churches and in families by pastors and by parents. No government program can make up for the breakdown of the family. Try as they might, bureaucrats and social workers cannot replace fathers.

I am equally convinced that after he finished weeping, Dr. King would be marching through the streets of Chicago leading a crusade to rebuild the black family. He would not be trying to redefine marriage or advocate for policies that led to a majority of minority babies being aborted.

    “Burn, Baby, Burn”

A month ago, we reported the disturbing news that aborted babies were being burned to produce electricity in several British hospitals. It is happening here too.

A waste-to-energy facility in Marion County, Oregon, recently confirmed that it is receiving “biomedical waste” from British Columbia, Canada. What executives at the energy plant claim they did not know until this week was that the waste included aborted babies.

In operation since 1987, the facility has been a source of considerable controversy. A 2007 article tragically titled, “Burn, Baby, Burn,” noted that “800 tons of medical waste per year” were incinerated at the facility. Many local residents were deeply concerned then about the lack of testing for health and safety standards. But in recent days officials at the British Columbia Health Ministry admitted that the biomedical waste included “surgically removed cancerous tissue, amputated limbs, and fetal tissue.”

The burning of fetal tissue to power area homes has infuriated Marion County officials, who have called an emergency meeting today. County Commissioner Janet Carlson told a local TV station, “We are outraged and disgusted that this material could be included in medical waste received at the facility.”

Sam Brentano, chairman of the Marion County board of commissioners, said yesterday, “We thought our ordinance excluded this type of material at the waste-to-energy facility. We will take immediate action to ensure a process is developed to prohibit human tissue from future deliveries.”

    Palestinians Pick Genocide Over Peace

If there was any doubt or confusion about the true obstacle to peace in the Middle East, yesterday’s action by the leadership of the Palestinian Authority to embrace Hamas should settle the issue. This decision to form a new unity government with Hamas — a terrorist organization that refuses to recognize Israel’s right to exist — tells you everything you need to know about the unwillingness of the Palestinian leadership to negotiate a meaningful peace with Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blasted the move yesterday, saying, “…as peace talks were about to take place, [Palestinian President Mahmoud] Abbas chose Hamas and not peace. Whoever chooses Hamas does not want peace.”

Meanwhile at the State Department, reality seems to be setting in. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, “It’s hard to see how Israel can be expected to negotiate with a government that does not believe in its right to exist. … This could seriously complicate our efforts…” You think?

    Wrestling With Race

Yesterday, to the chagrin of the Obama Administration and leftists everywhere, the Supreme Court handed down a principled decision on the use of race as a criterion for college admissions. By a surprising 6-to-2 vote the court upheld the right of Michigan voters to eliminate a practice euphemistically known as affirmative action. In 2006, 58% of Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment stopping race-based admissions.

I use the term “euphemistically” because the practice is the very thing that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., condemned. Dr. King captured the imagination of this good and decent country by calling attention to the injustice of decisions based on the color of one’s skin rather than the content of their character. Yet when it comes to so many aspects of life today, that is precisely what the politically correct left demands.

There are only so many openings at a university. If a black student were denied admission even though she met all the criteria of good grades, solid SAT scores and strong extra-curricular activities, it would be understood as discriminatory and unacceptable.

Likewise, when an opening is awarded in part because an applicant is a member of a preferred racial category, that, too, should be abhorrent in a society committed to non-discrimination.

I strongly believe that affirmative action has actually hurt minorities. It casts an underserving shadow on achievement. The accomplished black surgeon, scientist or CEO is tarred by the false perception that he or she could not have succeeded without racial preferences.

In addition, racial set-asides send a message to minority youth that they cannot succeed without certain advantages. Far from alleviating racial tension, I believe affirmative action aggravates it. It has ingrained what is often decried as the “soft bigotry of low expectations.”

Justice Sotomayor dissented from the majority ruling. She wrote that “race matters” and that judges should “confront the racial inequality that exists in our society.” No fair person believes that racial inequality should be tolerated. But most Americans reject racial discrimination of any kind as a solution.

The irony of Sotomayor’s dissent, which was joined by Justice Ginsburg, was extraordinary. Here was the first Hispanic, female Supreme Court justice, appointed by the first president of color, sitting on a court with Clarence Thomas and two other women, arguing that America must have minority set-asides!

There were several “majority” opinions in the Michigan case, but the six justices found the most common ground around the notion that the people of Michigan had the right to decide the issue for themselves. Justice Stephen Breyer joined the court’s five center-right justices, while Justice Elena Kagan recused herself.

In his opinion, Justice Kennedy wrote, “This case is not about how the debate about racial preferences should be resolved. It is about who may resolve it.” Kennedy added, “Democracy does not presume that some subjects are either too divisive or too profound for public debate.”

In his opinion siding with the majority, liberal Justice Stephen Breyer had no problem with the fact that the voter-approved amendment banning affirmative action “…took decision making authority away from these unelected actors [university administrators] and placed it in the hands of the voters.”

At a time when the rights of the people are increasingly constrained, it is refreshing to see the high court uphold the right of the people to decide university admission criteria. Let’s pray a majority of the court will permit the people of Michigan and dozens of other states the same right to define the meaning of marriage!

    Discounts For Death?

The destruction of innocent babies in America is big business. If you don’t believe me, look at the discounts abortionists are offering to entice women to choose death.

Several abortion clinics offer coupons for “liking” their Facebook pages. One Florida abortionist offers a discount as high as $100. A Pennsylvania abortion clinic advertises a $50 discount for “Out of State Residents.”

A Florida clinic gave a new meaning to the term “Black Friday” with its “After Thanksgiving Savings” coupon. That’s right — the day after thanking God for His blessings, you can save a few bucks when you abort your baby.

Talk about the cheapening of life! Offering discounts for the destruction of an innocent human baby exposes the callous business model of the abortion industry and its exploitation of women.

Pence Talks Energy, Education and Ukraine

Indiana Governor Mike Pence is getting more attention these days. His recent trip to Europe got a lot of traction. He gave a number of speeches sounding Reaganesque themes, suggesting that America has an important role to play in the world. Some people were surprised, but I was not. During his time in Congress, Pence served ten years on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

I am getting more and more questions about the 2016 contest and whether Governor Pence could be a serious contender. I always remind folks that we must remain focused on this year’s elections and that Governor Pence has often downplayed speculation about the future.

That said, click here to watch Pence discuss three hot button issues on Fox News and you’ll appreciate why many conservatives would like to see him emerge as a top 2016 contender.

    Traditional Marriage A Winning Issue

    Are social conservatives’ views unpopular?

Left-leaning political commentators, Democratic Party operatives and the Republican establishment constantly advise the GOP to drop social conservatives’ issues from the party’s platform. Today American Values, along with Family Research Council, released the results of a commissioned national survey conducted by Wilson Research Strategies showing that 82 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning independents believe marriage “should be defined only as a union between one man and one woman.” In fact, 74 percent of GOP voters strongly agreed with this statement.

It’s time for Republicans to stop taking advice from people who want them to lose. As I noted in Politico today, “Public policy makers are doing a great disservice to themselves and future generations by continuing to misread the convictions of the American people, who overwhelmingly support the institution of marriage as a unique union of one man and one woman. The misinformation campaign waged by media elites muddies the debate and attempts to isolate those who support the time-honored traditions and values shared by every major world religion throughout human history.”

“Incredibly, the debate is no longer about privacy and tolerance. Religious liberty, free speech and rights of conscience are now at stake. This survey should remind political and cultural leaders that this debate is far from over. If anything, it is taking on a new sense of urgency for millions of men and women of faith.” Click here to read more.

    Turn Off The Fan!

Representative Steve Lynch, a Democrat congressman from Massachusetts, used some colorful language recently in predicting what will happen next in the Obamacare debate. Speaking on Boston Herald Radio, Lynch said that the worst parts of the law are still unimplemented but eventually will “hit the fan.”

Lynch’s subtle comparison of Obamacare to poop has a ring of truth. Some of the most onerous, unpopular portions of the law have been postponed, including a new 40% tax on health care policies that the Obama Administration feels are too good –policies it refers to as “Cadillac plans.”

The congressman’s warning comes in the wake of President Obama telling elected Democratic officials to “forcefully defend and be proud of” Obamacare. One Democrat consultant said, “They all voted for it, they all own it, so they can’t get away from it. So they’d better start defending it.”

    Another Attack On “Under God”

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 and formally adopted by Congress in 1942. The words “under God” were added twelve years later, and it is an interesting story how that happened.

One Sunday morning early in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower attended services at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church a few blocks from the White House. There he heard Reverend Dr. George MacPherson Docherty give a stirring sermon calling for the addition of the words “under God” to the Pledge. Docherty said that there was nothing in the Pledge that differentiated Americans from Russians. Russian school children, he argued, could recite a similar pledge to their country.

This prompted Ike to reflect on what made Americans different from their Soviet enemies—-what set America apart. Of course, it is that we believe our liberty comes from God.

The next day, Eisenhower initiated the process of adding “under God” to the pledge. Soon after, Rep. Charles Oakman introduced a bill to add the words and the law passed overwhelmingly in both houses of Congress and was signed by the president.

Interestingly, given the current attacks on religious liberty and the overall trend toward restraining religious speech, I’m not sure such a bill would pass today, especially in Harry Reid’s Senate.

The courts have gone back and forth about the constitutionality of the daily schoolroom ritual. In 2002, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals declared the words to be an unconstitutional endorsement of religion. Then, in 2010, the same court ruled that the phrase could be left in because it invokes not religious faith but “our founders’ political philosophy that a power greater than the government gives the people their inalienable rights.”

Now “under God” has been targeted again. A national humanist group is suing a New Jersey school district on behalf of a family that believes the words “under God” discriminate against atheist children. The American Humanist Association claims that phrase “marginalizes atheist and humanist kids as something less than ideal patriots.” This even though state law allows children to opt out of reciting the pledge.

I don’t know how this latest fight will turn out. But I do know that the left won’t be happy until all recognition of God is banished from the public square. Ronald Reagan used to say that if we ever forget that we are “one nation under God then we will be a nation gone under.” He was right.
