Obama And The King

After meeting with Pope Francis yesterday, President Obama is headed to Saudi Arabia today to meet with King Abdullah. Just as Obama’s NATO meetings this week were meant to reassure nervous allies, today’s meeting is meant to repair strained relations with the Saudis.

The Saudis have been very public in their displeasure with Obama’s foreign policy, particularly his outreach toward Shiite Iran. One Middle East expert suggested that Riyadh’s patience is wearing thin.

“Their view of Mr. Obama is that his entire understanding is wrong. The trust in him is not very high,” said Mustafa Alani of the Gulf Research Center. “If [Obama’s] coming empty-handed and King Abdullah hears the same rhetoric he’s been hearing, I think the relationship will suffer far more than it suffered before.”

I couldn’t help but notice that after Obama’s stop in Rome he’s off to Riyadh. Even though he is “in the neighborhood,” I suppose his schedule is just too jammed to squeeze in a visit to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv.

Here’s something the president should bring up with the Saudis. This week the Arab League held a summit in Kuwait and released a statement that read in part: “We hold Israel entirely responsible for the lack of progress in the peace process… We express our absolute and decisive rejection to recognizing Israel as a Jewish state.”

Israel is surrounded by Islamic nations, many of which have Sharia law written into their constitutions. Yet some believe there cannot be even one Jewish state in the world.

If Israel’s neighbors were serious about the peace process, if they truly desired peace with Israel, it shouldn’t be that hard to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. The fact that it is speaks volumes about the deep-seated anti-Semitism that is so prevalent among Israel’s Arab League neighbors. And that is the real reason there is no progress in the so-called “peace process.”

Obamacare Hits New Record

The White House is crowing about the latest Obamacare enrollment figures, but that’s not what I’m referring to. We all know those numbers are bogus anyway.

The record I’m referring to comes from the latest Associated Press poll: Just 26% of Americans support Obamacare — a record low.

But that figure comes with a caveat. Even with support for Obamacare at a record low, only 13% of respondents believe it will be completely repealed. A majority (54%) believes it will be implemented “as is” or with only minor reforms.

Why is that? There are some things in the law that are popular, and which even conservatives have historically agreed with, such as covering pre-existing conditions, allowing adult children to remain on their parents’ policies longer and providing coverage for catastrophic illnesses.

The public is clearly frustrated with Obamacare. But if we are ever going to move beyond this monument to big government incompetence, conservative policy makers must be ready with solutions and able to speak to the legitimate concerns that many Americans struggle with every day.

Victory For Life

Conservative victories in the courts are few, so it’s nice when we have the opportunity to report them. Yesterday a panel of judges on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld challenged portions of the recently passed pro-life legislation in Texas that banned late-term abortions and improved health and safety standards for abortionists and their facilities.

Of course, the radical pro-abortion lobby is not giving up and will challenge the law all the way to the Supreme Court, where the outcome is questionable.

What struck me this morning as I read the news online was the picture the media chose to accompany the report. It showed five demonstrators laying on the capitol floor with letters on their chests spelling out “SHAME.”

That just shows what a bizarre world we live in. Leftists say the desire to stop the carnage of unborn children is a matter of shame, while the supporters of abortion-on-demand have no shame, hailing it as a noble, fundamental right.

Professor Obama Lectures Europe

President Obama wrapped up his meeting of NATO allies yesterday with a speech in Brussels that sounded more like a lecture from a college professor than a bold proclamation from the leader of the free world. For many Europeans, it seems their infatuation with Obama is over.

Obama told our allies that every NATO member “must step up.” That must seem like an odd statement after Obama cancelled missile defense systems in Poland to appease Russia and is now cutting our own military.

When European leaders pressed Obama to speed up energy exports, he reportedly rebuffed them and told them to do more to become energy independent. Meanwhile, his administration and its radical environmental allies are doing everything possible to hold our energy industry back, fighting new drilling technology, delaying the Keystone pipeline and restricting offshore exploration, while they waste taxpayer dollars on alternative energy boondoggles.

Most disconcerting, Obama again revealed his hand when he made this statement: “Ukraine is not a member of NATO — in part because of its close and complex history with Russia. Nor will Russia be dislodged from Crimea or deterred from further escalation by military force.”

Not surprisingly, CNN reports today that “A new U.S. intelligence assessment concludes that a Russian incursion into eastern Ukraine is more likely than previously thought…” The Russian military buildup is now estimated to be at least 30,000 troops and is “reminiscent of Moscow’s military moves before it went into Chechnya and Georgia in both the number of units and their capabilities.” (Ukraine says there are at least 100,000 Russian troops poised on its borders.)

And why not? By explicitly taking options off the table yet again, and even echoing Putin’s justification of ethnic and historical claims, Obama has practically invited Putin to take whatever neighboring territory he wants!

Several commentators noticed that Obama paused during his remarks for what he thought were applause lines, but there was no applause. After wrapping up a press conference with the Dutch prime minister, Obama thanked the crowd and waved as he walked off the stage to the sound of just one man slowly clapping.

The President And The Pope

After leaving Brussels, President Obama flew to Rome, where he met with Pope Francis for nearly an hour. Politico writes that Obama was seeking a “halo effect:”

“President Barack Obama was once the biggest superstar on the international stage. On Thursday, he headed here to benefit from the popularity of his replacement: Pope Francis. The 50-minute meeting was a rare chance for Obama to associate himself with a world leader whose cool factor far outweighs his own…”

Politico is right about that. A new poll from the Associated Press finds that Obama’s disapproval rating has just hit a record high of 59%.

When Ronald Reagan met with Pope John Paul II, they had a common goal — to defeat godless communism. What do Obama and Pope Francis have in common? The meaning of marriage? The sanctity of life?

According to Politico: “Obama planned to use the closely watched meeting to show how aligned he is with the pope on income inequality, poverty and immigration…”

While the White House may want to talk about income inequality, poverty and immigration, the Vatican made it clear that Pope Francis raised other issues too.

In a statement released after their meeting, the Vatican said the pope and the president discussed “questions of particular relevance for the Church in [America], such as the exercise of the rights to religious freedom, life and conscientious objection…”

Those very questions were before the Supreme Court yesterday precisely because the Obama Administration is on the opposite side of each one.

Are You Smarter Than An American University Student?

I struggled between laughing and crying as I watched the latest video from our friends at the Media Research Center. MRC reporter Dan Joseph went to the campus of American University in Washington, D.C., and asked AU students if they could name one — just one — United States senator. He asked how many senators each state had. Watch it here.

At first it made me chuckle. But then I remembered that these students are part of the Millennial generation, which tends to be very liberal on many issues. They approvingly nod their heads at whatever their left-wing professors say, and they get their news from Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and other late night comedians who routinely mock conservatives and Christians.

Friends, if you have children or grandchildren in college today, please talk to them about current events and issues making headlines. These young adults may be heavily influenced by the popular culture, but do not underestimate your own influence. Family matters!

The Issue Is Religious Liberty

I want to revisit the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby case today in view of some of the news coverage and punditry from the talking heads. The central issue of this debate is not the legality or availability of contraception. It is religious liberty.

The left is trying hard to confuse Americans about that fact. A pro-abortion and fake Catholic group ran a full-page ad in yesterday’s Washington Post. It posed the question, “Who in their right mind would want a woman’s boss in charge of her birth control?”

The ad stated that arguments about religious liberty were “fake” and accused Catholic bishops of trying to “impose their religious views on all Americans.”

That was the same line of reasoning pursued yesterday by Justice Kagan, who rhetorically asked if employers should be able to exclude vaccines and blood transfusions from insurance policies based on religious objections to those procedures. In Kagan’s view, the right to free birth control trumps all other considerations.

It’s a mystery to me where Justice Kagan finds this imaginary right. But the Constitution is clear about the right of religious liberty! And that is the point — this is not a debate about contraception.

While the Catholic Church has moral objections to contraception, there is no law in the United States limiting it use. The Supreme Court settled that issue fifty years ago.

Moreover, I can say without any fear of contradiction that from the very beginning of the republic until now there has never been a day in America when contraception was not as readily available to men and women (even your kids in the public schools) at lower cost than it is today. In fact, it’s not that hard to find it for free. No matter what the outcome of the Supreme Court’s decision in the Hobby Lobby case, contraception will continue to be widely available in America.

So, I repeat — this is not a debate about the legality or availability of contraception.

This case is about our constitutional guarantees of religious liberty. Are they real or not?

It has implications for other constitutional protections like free speech, freedom of assembly and the right to bear arms. Will those rights continue to be whittled away by the big government juggernaut that is trying to tell us what to buy, what to eat, how much to drink, what temperature to set the thermostat?

There are two main aspects of this debate.

First, can the government force religious institutions to subsidize something that goes against the teachings of that particular religious group? It would be a dark day in America if the highest court in the land declared, “Yes, we can put a nun in jail if she refuses to allow one penny of her organization’s funds to abort a baby or provide sterilizations.”

That is precisely the dispute in Little Sisters of the Poor vs. Kathleen Sebelius. In December, Justice Sotomayor temporarily blocked the Obama Administration from persecuting these nuns while their case continues to work its way through the appeals process.

If there is an employee working for the Little Sisters who disagrees with the teachings of the Catholic Church, the remedy in a free country is for that employee to seek employment somewhere that offers an insurance policy that covers contraception, sterilizations and abortions.

Hobby Lobby And Abortion

The second aspect of the debate is whether a closely held business owned by a religious family can be forced through their business to pay for services that violate their religious beliefs. That was the issue at the Supreme Court yesterday.

If religious liberty applies only to churches and not individuals, then there really isn’t freedom of religion. If it only means that the government can’t force your wife to have an abortion, but it can force you as an employer to pay for your employees’ abortions, that’s not much of a right.

But that is exactly the power the Obama Administration claimed it had during yesterday’s hearing. Consider this exchange between Justice Anthony Kennedy, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, representing the Obama Administration, and Chief Justice John Roberts:

JUSTICE KENNEDY: Under your view, a profit corporation … could be forced in principle to pay for abortions. … your reasoning would permit that.
GENERAL VERRILLI: Well, I think that … it would depend on the law and it would depend on the entity. It certainly wouldn’t be true, I think, for religious nonprofits. It certainly wouldn’t be true for a church.
JUSTICE KENNEDY: I’m talking about a profit corporation. You say profit corporations just don’t have any standing to vindicate the religious rights of their shareholders and owners.
GENERAL VERRILLI: Well, I think that if it were for a forprofit corporation and if such a law like that were enacted, then you’re right, under our theory that the forprofit corporation wouldn’t have an ability to sue. But there is no law like that on the books. … [Emphasis added.]
CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: I’m sorry… There is no law on the books that does what? …
GENERAL VERRILLI: That requires forprofit corporations to provide abortions.
CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Isn’t that what we are talking about in terms of their [Hobby Lobby’s] religious beliefs? One of the religious beliefs is that they have to pay for these four methods of contraception that they believe provide abortions. I thought that’s what we had before us.

Just to be clear, the Green family, which owns Hobby Lobby, are evangelical Protestants. They do not object to contraception. In fact, an attorney representing the Green family noted that the insurance plan offered to Hobby Lobby employees covers 16 out of 20 forms of contraception — just not the four abortion-inducing methods demanded by Obamacare. And, clearly, the Obama Administration believes it can demand even more.

The Left’s Assault On Faith

This is the most important point to understand: For at least half a century, the left has been using the language of tolerance to intimidate conservatives into silence and force its agenda on the rest of the country. Sadly, it has succeeded in convincing many conservatives and religious Americans that, even though they may have strong feelings about abortion and marriage, they have no right to use the law to “force their views on somebody else.”

Pontificating liberals love to lecture conservatives by saying, “You can’t legislate morality!”

We have repeatedly warned that the people making this argument have a long history of being extremely intolerant. As they have gained strength, their real intention has become more transparent. They are not simply asking for an America where they can live the way they want. Rather, they want an America where you will live the way they want.

Remember that full-page ad I mentioned at the beginning of this report? Liberals were accusing Catholic bishops of trying to “impose their religious views on all Americans.” The exact opposite is true. The Obama Administration, under the guise of health care, is using the power of big government to force religious Americans to pay for its radical abortion-on-demand agenda.

Government Mandated Contraception Vs. Religious Liberty

As Chief Justice John Roberts reminded us in upholding Obamacare two years ago, it is always risky to try to predict the outcome of a Supreme Court case based on oral arguments. But multiple reports suggest a clear majority of justices today were hostile to the government’s defense of Obamacare’s contraception mandate, which would force religious business owners to pay for abortion-inducing drugs and sterilizations.

From CNN came this headline: “Court Majority Harshly Critical Of Obamacare Contraception Mandate.” And there was this headline from the Los Angeles Times: “Justices Sound Ready To Reject Contraceptives Mandate Under Obamacare.”

Justice Anthony Kennedy, often the swing vote in major cases, seemed particularly critical. At one point, Kennedy said to Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, “Your reasoning would permit requiring profit-making corporations to pay for abortions.”

There are reports that even liberal Justice Stephen Breyer seemed to be searching for a way to roll back the mandate, perhaps resulting in a 6-to-3 ruling. A decision is not expected until summer.

Please keep this decision and the justices in your prayers. And do not forget the Hobby Lobby case when discussing Obamacare with your friends and relatives. If they lose this case, Hobby Lobby’s owners are facing fines in excess of $1 million a day if they refuse to violate their deeply held values.

The left is constantly assaulting our fundamental freedoms. Men and women of faith cannot remain on the sidelines in America’s culture war. Religious liberty hangs in the balance.

Taxpayer-Funded Subsidies Challenged, Too

Meanwhile, there was another high-profile challenge to Obamacare heard today in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. In that case, the plaintiffs were challenging the Obama Administration for refusing to follow the plain language of the law.

As written by the Congress in 2010, Obamacare does not allow subsidies for the federal exchange. The subsidies were offered as an incentive for states to set up their own exchanges. But since most states opted against doing so, the outcome of this case could have major ramifications. You can read more here.

The Religion of Peace?

While the Obama Administration continues to pressure Israel to make concessions for peace with its Palestinian neighbors, some Palestinians don’t seem all that interested in peace. Consider these excerpts from a recent address by Yunis Al-Astal, which aired on Al-Aqsa TV in Gaza:

“In today’s show, we will discuss the demand that the Palestinian people recognize [Israel] as a Jewish state… I would like to begin by quoting what Allah said about them: ‘The worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are those who disbelieve. They are the ones with whom you made a covenant, but they break their covenant every time.’ … Allah added: ‘If you gain mastery over them in a war, use them to disperse those who follow them that they may remember.’
“This indicates that we must massacre them, in order to break them down and prevent them from sowing corruption in the world. …We must restore them to the state of humiliation imposed upon them. They should be dhimmi citizens. This status must be imposed upon them by war. They must pay the jizya security tax while they live in our midst.”

What makes Al-Astal’s comments even more notable is that he is not just your average anti-Semitic Palestinian cleric. He is also a Hamas member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, or what would be the parliament of the Palestinian state. Evidently, Yunis Al-Astal didn’t get the memo about Islam being a “religion of peace.”

Here’s more evidence of the animosity Israel faces on a daily basis. After wrapping up his trip to The Hague to reassure our nervous European allies worried about a resurgent Russia, President Obama is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia, where he hopes to repair the damage caused by his repeated outreach to Iran. (It must be noted here that these are not isolated situations — when it comes to Iran’s nuclear program, Russia and Iran are on the same side.)

News broke today that the Saudis rejected the visa application of Michael Wilner, one of the journalists who covers President Obama for the Jerusalem Post. Wilner is Jewish, but he is an American citizen, not an Israeli citizen, and has never lived in Israel. Yet in spite of U.S. protests, the Saudi government is refusing to budge.

Running Out Of Energy? Burn The Babies

The right to destroy innocent unborn children, a moral and cultural poison injected into the American body politic in 1973 by the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, has led to evils like Kermit Gosnell, the monstrous “doctor” who bizarrely displayed the arms and legs of aborted babies in jars in his office.

This morning comes news out of Britain that in more than two dozen government-run hospitals aborted babies and miscarried fetal remains were burned in furnaces as medical waste without the knowledge of parents. The Telegraph reports that mothers were instead told that the remains had been cremated. At least two of the hospitals use the furnaces as “waste to energy” generators to provide heat.

I would like to think there would be universal outrage at this news. But I suspect there won’t be. If the unborn child is not a human life worthy of dignity and respect, what difference does it make how it is disposed of? But, of course, each pre-born baby is made in the image of the same God who hung the stars in the sky so how they are treated makes a great deal of difference.

America is better than 2,900 abortions a day. Great Britain, which in one of its finest hours held off the monstrous Adolf Hitler, who specialized in burning bodies in furnaces, is better than today’s breaking news. But as long as Western Civilization embraces abortion on demand, it will continue to sink further into the mire of moral relativism and societal decline.

Religious Freedom On Trial

Tomorrow is a tremendously important day for religious liberty in the United States. The Supreme Court will take up two key cases challenging Obamacare’s contraception mandate. The cases revolve around the question of whether the federal government can compel businesses owned by men and women of faith to provide services that violate their deeply held religious beliefs.

One of the cases involves Hobby Lobby, a chain of arts and crafts stores owned by a devout Southern Baptist family. The company is not opposed to birth control. It is adamantly against paying for sterilization or so-called “morning after” drugs that kill babies in the womb. But coverage of such “emergency contraception” is mandated under Obamacare. If Hobby Lobby refuses to obey this particular Obamacare mandate, it faces fines in excess of $1 million a day. In other words, the government is telling this family: Provide what you morally abhor or we will bankrupt you.

For some time now, conservatives have been warning about the erosion of religious liberty in the United States and that a form of persecution is beginning to take root. It is plain for everyone to see in the Hobby Lobby case. If the court rules that the government can force private business owners to violate the teachings of their faith, it will have essentially gutted the First Amendment.

Meanwhile, this is a multi-front war. Last week, we reported on the growing hostility toward faith at the Air Force Academy, which appears to be promoting atheism.

Cardinal Raymond Burke, known as the Vatican’s chief justice, said recently that President Obama’s policies “have become progressively more hostile toward Christian civilization.” Burke added:

“[Obama] appears to be a totally secularized man who aggressively promotes anti-life and anti-family policies. Now he wants to restrict the exercise of the freedom of religion to freedom of worship, that is, he holds that one is free to act according to his conscience within the confines of his place of worship but that, once the person leaves the place of worship, the government can constrain him to act against his rightly-formed conscience, even in the most serious of moral questions. Such policies would have been unimaginable in the United States even 40 years ago.”

Every pastor in America should be explaining this to their parishoners.

Will Russian Tanks Roll Again?

NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, warned yesterday that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have designs on additional territory near Moldova. “The (Russian) force that is at the Ukrainian border now to the east is very, very sizeable and very, very ready,” General Breedlove said. He added, “…it is very clear that Russia is acting much more like an adversary than a partner.”

And what is the administration’s reaction to this news? Tony Blinken, a top national security official, appeared on CNN this weekend. After conceding that “it’s possible they are preparing to move in,” Blinken added that providing U.S. military assistance to Ukraine was “very unlikely to change Russia’s calculus.”

Why must the Obama Administration continue thinking out loud? Telegraphing weakness or the unwillingness to act only invites aggression.

Unfortunately, the mantra of “There’s nothing we can do” continues to echo on the left and the right. I have outlined before many things that should have been done already, such as approving the Keystone pipeline and fast-tracking permits for liquefied natural gas plants. If those things had been done at the beginning of Obama’s presidency, we would now be in a position to sell natural gas to our European allies, which would strengthen their hands without fear of a Russian energy boycott.

Here’s something else: Obama should announce that the budget he sent to Congress, which cuts the Army to pre-World War II levels, was obviously drafted before the leader of Russia proved he was untrustworthy and had expansionist aims. Obama should announce that he is withdrawing that budget and sending a new one that increases defense spending.

Too Pricy For VP, But OK For FLOTUS?

First ladies take overseas trips and often make outstanding representatives for the country. Inevitably it costs money. How much is the question. USA Today reports that Mrs. Obama is staying in the Presidential Suite at the “5-star Westin Hotel” in Beijing.

That’s odd because the Westin was reportedly too expensive for Vice President Joe Biden’s trip last December. That was a good call. But at $8,400 a night, how did it suddenly become affordable for the First Lady?

Speaking of China, Nancy Reagan was raked over the coals when she wanted to replace the White House china, which had not been updated since the Johnson Administration. The media blasted the Reagan White House for being out of touch.

But now many so-called “journalists” are silent.

Putin On The Prowl

Over these last few weeks, while Russia was violating international law, the leader of the free world did everything he could not to be “provocative.” Obama responded to the invasion of a sovereign country with which we have treaty obligations by slapping sanctions on a list of Russian citizens. Obama’s response amounted to: “You invade Crimea and we are going to make it impossible for Ivan Pavlov to come to Disney World!” I doubt Putin was impressed.

While the Obama Administration was telling us how important it was to avoid being provocative, Barack Obama was in possession of information regarding additional provocative actions by Putin. Fasten your seatbelts, folks. America’s weakness is becoming so evident to our enemies that they are jockeying for position not just in their backyards, but in ours as well!

Consider this excerpt from The Hill:

“Away from the conflict in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin is quietly seeking a foothold in Latin America, military officials warn. To the alarm of lawmakers and Pentagon officials, Putin has begun sending navy ships and long-range bombers [to Latin America] for the first time in years. Russia’s defense minister says the country is planning bases in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua…
“Gen. James Kelly, commander of U.S. Southern Command said there has been a ‘noticeable uptick in Russian power projection and security force personnel’ in Latin America. ‘It has been over three decades since we last saw this type of high-profile Russian military presence,’ Kelly said…”

But that’s not all. The Hill adds, “Iran has opened up 11 additional embassies and 33 cultural centers in Latin America…” Why would Iran want “cultural centers” throughout Latin America? To bolster what may be one of the most overlooked terrorist threats to America — Hezbollah’s growing influence in the region.

Court Upholds Voter ID

The Obama Justice Department might want to reconsider its lawsuits against voter ID laws in Texas and North Carolina. Advocates of more stringent voter ID requirements won a big victory this week when a federal judge upheld proof of citizenship requirements in Arizona and Kansas.

In most states when someone registers to vote, they merely have to check a box attesting that they are a citizen. Arizona and Kansas passed laws that take it a step further — requiring individuals registering to vote to present documentary proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

Liberals challenged the Arizona law, and, in a decision issued last year, the U.S. Supreme Court effectively suspended the requirement. But the high court’s ruling was more about process than substance.

The court did not declare the proof of citizenship requirement to be unconstitutional; instead it ruled that the state of Arizona could not add a requirement to the federal forms. Arizona could, however, ask the federal Election Assistance Commission to add the requirement to forms used in Arizona.

Kansas had a similar requirement and both states asked the EAC to adjust the forms for each state. But in January the commission refused and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach sued. On Wednesday, federal District Judge Eric Melgren ordered the administration to immediately comply with Kobach’s request.

If the Obama Administration appeals the decision, Kobach said, “We’ll certainly fight it all the way.”

In The Privacy Of Taxpayer-Funded Classrooms?

I know you don’t need another example of the moral decline being pushed on society by the culture warriors of the left. But wait until you read this.

Two lesbian teachers at a Brooklyn high school were fired after they snuck out of an after-hours musical presentation and were caught having sex in an empty classroom. They sued the school district claiming their dismissal was excessive punishment. Yesterday a five judge appeals court agreed with the teachers and ordered them to be reinstated.

The judges declared that firing the teachers for “consensual sexual conduct with an adult colleague” was “shockingly disproportionate.” But we’re not talking about what two adults did in the privacy of their own bedroom. This took place in a taxpayer-funded public school. Homosexuality is out of the closet and perfectly legal in the classroom!

Here’s what I believe: If a school official walked into a classroom and teachers were holding hands praying with students, their firing probably would have been upheld. Lesbians can play but children can’t pray.

I’ll go even further given the atmosphere we’re in. If the teachers involved had been a man and a woman, I think the firing would have been upheld. These women are part of the “in” class with the left and seemingly can do no wrong.

I know all of you routinely ask in your prayers and often hear politicians say, “God bless America.” I’m afraid it is becoming a harder request of God if there is not a moral and cultural revival soon.

There Is Hope: Summit Ministries

After that last item, you may feel America’s future is hopeless. Watch this video now.

I’m proud to be a member of the board of reference for Summit Ministries. Summit has a long track record of preparing young adults to stand strong against hostile worldviews and become courageous leaders at a time when our nation needs them desperately.

If you want the young adults you know and love to go against the flow and live boldly, with purpose and conviction, I urge you to check out Summit Ministries. More than 35,000 families to date have enrolled their 16-to-21-year-old sons and daughters in a Summit Ministries program. Obama Shows His Cards, Turns His Back

Everybody knows that in poker, you don’t reveal your hand. A good foreign policy utilizes the same strategy.

When confronting aggression by a hostile power, one of the first principles of foreign policy is never to take options off the table. We hear it all the time whenever Iran’s nuclear program is in the news: “All options are on the table.”

Evidently Barack Obama was too busy filling out his NCAA bracket to consult his foreign policy training manual. During a series of local news interviews yesterday, Obama was asked what steps he might take next in the Crimean crisis. Incredibly, Obama showed Putin and every other tyrant his cards.

Obama said, “We are not going to be getting into a military excursion in Ukraine.” In a separate interview, Obama said, “…we do not need to trigger an actual war with Russia. The Ukrainians don’t want that. Nobody would want that.”

Of course we do not want a war, but the decision might not be ours. (Ron and Rand Paul supporters: Please do not waste my time accusing me of supporting war in Ukraine — I don’t.)

The proper answer was, “I’m not going to discuss hypotheticals. The United States wants an end to aggression in Eastern Europe, and we are going to work with our allies to come up with ways to make sure it does end.”

It has been humorous to watch our media establishment describing Russian President Vladimir Putin as crazy, unbalanced and unpredictable. What the left, from the president to his adoring media friends, sees as bizarre behavior is precisely how one might expect a former KGB officer to act. Especially one who called the collapse of the Soviet Union “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”

Let me remind you of Obama’s history in Ukraine. In 2005, Barack Obama made his first overseas trip as a United States senator to Ukraine in an effort to convince that country to destroy massive stockpiles of conventional weapons. “Vast stocks of conventional munitions and military supplies have accumulated in Ukraine,” Obama said. “We need to eliminate these stockpiles for the safety of the Ukrainian people…”

The thrust of the argument Obama and that Senate delegation made to Ukraine was, “We’ve got your back.” Well, not so much. To many Ukrainians, it must seem like Obama has turned his back on them. Crimea is under Russian control now. The rest of Ukraine is facing military intimidation and a possible invasion.

I mention the phrase “I’ve got your back,” because it is one of the president’s favorites. No doubt the White House polled it and found it scored well with the public. He has used it in appeals to various voting blocs and even with respect to Israel’s existential threat from Iran’s nuclear weapons program. During a 2012 speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Obama said, “I have Israel’s back.”

Remember, too, that the United States, Britain and Russia signed a treaty in 1994 guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty. Putin just shredded that treaty. How safe do you think Israelis feel today with Obama’s claim that he has “Israel’s back”?

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon fears Israel is on its own. Ya’alon is in hot water for daring to state the obvious — that Obama is “broadcasting weakness” across the globe. Ya’alon added, “This is a war of civilizations. If you are perceived to be weak, that certainly does not pay in the world. I hope the U.S. will reassert itself.”

My Bracket Pick

Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher worked tirelessly to bring down the Iron Curtain and free Eastern Europe from the Soviet evil empire. It’s disturbing to see today just how radically things have changed.

Given the president’s obsession with brackets, I took a few seconds to consider what the European nation “finals” might look like today. Since the U.S. team doesn’t have an effective ball handler, the results seem obvious. Check out my Facebook page for my “bracket picks.”

Revisiting History

George Will wrote an extraordinary column reminding us of the history of Russian genocide in Ukraine. In the 1930s, Joseph Stalin intentionally caused a famine in Ukraine that killed millions of people. In many cases, the survivors resorted to cannibalism.

Stalin’s goal was to murder as many Ukrainians as possible and replace them with ethnic Russians. Their descendants are siding with Vladimir Putin today as he claims the right to protect ethnic minorities in bordering countries.

Of course in the 1930s the Soviets denied any responsibility for the famine, and blamed it on a lack of rain. But I know something about this. In 1985 Congress authorized the creation of a Commission on the Ukraine Famine. There were 15 members on the commission, including six members of Congress.

I was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as his representative on this commission. It was a tremendous undertaking. The commission took testimony from scores of eyewitnesses and interviewed more than 200 survivors.

The famine was manmade and the goal was to destroy the Ukrainian people. As the saying goes, history does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme. Ukraine is in the crosshairs again and neither the Obama Administration nor Europe knows what to do.

Al Qaeda Threatens Jihad In America

As the country approaches the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, Al Qaeda’s “Inspire” magazine has issued a new call for jihad in America. This same magazine reportedly inspired the Tsarnaev brothers.

The latest edition instructs wannabe martyrs to conduct car bombings in major American cities — Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C., targeting sporting events, election rallies and year-end holidays.

This is just one more reminder that while the headlines may be dominated by vanishing planes and Vladimir Putin, and despite assurances that Al Qaeda has been decimated, radical Islamists remain committed to bringing more death and destruction to our shores.

Fighting For Our Values

As you know, I am deeply concerned by efforts within the GOP establishment to surrender on values issues. Earlier this week I challenged Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) when he tried to resurrect the notion of a truce on values issues. As he must know, the left is relentlessly attacking life, marriage and religious liberty. Paul’s suggestion that we “agree to disagree” is really a slow-motion surrender.

In my latest opinion piece, I give some friendly advice to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. Walker has been very bold in confronting Big Labor, but it appears, even though he is clearly pro-life, that he has bought into the GOP establishment’s advice to run away from values issues.
