IRS Scandal Grows

Earlier this month, Washington was rocked when the IRS admitted to and apologized for targeting Tea Party and Patriot groups. But a report from McClatchy Newspapers suggests that the IRS effort to target conservatives may have been much broader.

As we have previously reported, Christian ministries, such as the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse, were also hit with IRS audits. Morton Blackwell’s Leadership Institute went through an audit that lasted 13 months!

But this latest report notes that the IRS also went after several pro-life groups. In one case, an IRS official demanded that every board member on Coalition for Life of Iowa sign a statement pledging not to protest Planned Parenthood clinics. The IRS also demanded to know the content of their prayers.

This is beyond outrageous! But more to the point, such systematic and widespread targeting does not happen by accident. Nor could it have been the work of just a few “rogue agents.” (By the way, investigators with two key House committees are conducting interviews with IRS officials in Cincinnati, Ohio, this week and next.)

What is even more astonishing is how many liberals are actually encouraging the IRS. When Bette Midler heard about the scandal, her reaction was, “I love the IRS!” Believe it or not, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) fretted that all the attention created by the scandal would have a chilling effect on the IRS agents!

It is really shocking how the left has allowed authoritarianism to become part of its culture. We’ve seen it over the decades in the left’s accommodation of the Soviet Union, its moral equivalency between Israel and radical terrorists, the demands of the militant homosexual rights movement and Hollywood’s love for dictators like Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. Now many liberals seem perfectly happy to impose Stalinist tactics against conservatives here in America.

Obama Avoids Filling Critical Posts

We have learned a tremendous amount about these latest Obama scandals thanks to the work of various inspectors general. These are critically important positions throughout the government charged with internal policing and exposing waste, fraud and abuse.

It is very hard to play politics with inspectors general. They are one of the crucial checks built into the system. Obviously members of Congress can’t patrol the halls of the vast federal bureaucracy. But according to Breitbart.com, many of these vital positions are vacant.

The Pentagon IG position has been vacant for a year and a half. And if you think that’s bad, the State Department hasn’t had a confirmed inspector general since 2008. A skeptic might think that Hillary had insisted that no one look over her shoulder while she was there.

Whenever there is a cabinet post, Supreme Court vacancy or some other position Obama wants filled with a loyal crony, he has not hesitated to demand quick confirmation from the Senate. Yet when it comes to naming inspectors general, he seems to have a hard time making up his mind.

Stop The Insanity!

Today’s headlines bring us several disturbing examples of the bizarre world politically correct liberals are trying to create.

The Washington Post reports that a five year-old boy in Calvert County, Maryland, has been suspended for 10 days for bringing a “cowboy-style cap gun” on a school bus. According to the boy’s mother, her son was just really excited to show his new toy to a friend.

I understand the sensitivity about guns in school. But it was a toy! The left erupts in fits of rage when it comes to keeping the country safe from terrorists, but loses all common sense when it comes to kids and toys.

The boy was hauled into the principal’s office and interrogated for more than two hours, during which time he wet his pants. Not satisfied with terrorizing this child, school officials also called his older sister in for questioning too.

The family has hired an attorney to contest the absurdly harsh punishment and to get the child’s permanent record expunged.

Where is the ACLU? If a GITMO detainee were interrogated to the point of wetting himself, the left would be up in arms. But thanks to the left’s perverse worldview, we are turning little boys into criminals and coddling alleged jihadists. This is insanity!

Speaking of insanity, Chicago suffered another horrendous shooting spree over Memorial Day weekend. Six people were killed and 11 were wounded. Like most reasonable people, Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) is fed up with the gangbangers who are terrorizing the city. He said, “I think it’s completely within the capability of the United States government to crush a major urban gang. Just think of what the greatest generation did here in Chicago, pretty much crushing the Capone organization.”

So what is the response of Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL)? The former Black Panther accused Kirk of racial insensitivity, saying, “I am really very upset with Mark,” adding that his plan was an “upper-middle-class, elitist white boy solution to a problem he knows nothing about.” People are dying and this liberal Democrat appears to be sympathizing with the murderers!

But wait, there’s more. From America’s Left Coast, a super-majority in the California State Senate approved legislation Wednesday stripping the Boy Scouts of its tax-exempt status because it does not permit homosexuals to be adult leaders. The bill also targets any youth organization that does not embrace the “gender identity” choices of every individual.

In other words, if a girl decides she feels like a boy, a majority of California state senators believe the Boy Scouts should be forced to admit her.

Pastors, are you paying attention? Today it’s youth groups that don’t embrace homosexuality. Tomorrow it could be churches.

And to the Boy Scouts, we told you so. Liberals rejected your recent compromise and won’t stop until the ban on gay scoutmasters is lifted too. The sponsor of this outrageous bill said that the BSA has “a central flaw so profound that until it is fully fixed it means they are out of line with the values of California.”

Obamacare Will Cost You!

Yesterday we reported that millions of Americans are about to learn that they can’t keep their current health insurance plan because it doesn’t meet the “one size fits all” Big Government standard that Obamacare demands. To add insult to injury, the new plans you will be forced to buy starting next year will cost you a lot more too.

According to Forbes, individual insurance plans in California, which just set up its Obamacare state exchange, will increase as much as 146%.

Media Turn On Holder

Attorney General Eric Holder’s attempt at damage control appears to be backfiring. Holder was scheduled to hold “off the record” meetings with key members of the media today and tomorrow to repair frayed relations stemming from the Associated Press and Fox News scandals. But leading outlets are refusing to attend.

Yesterday the Associated Press and the New York Times announced they would not attend any “off the record” meetings with Holder given that he is now a huge part of the story. CNN, Fox News, CBS News, Reuters, and the Huffington Post also turned down Holder’s invitation.

It’s not surprising that Fox and the AP would refuse to go given that they were targets of Holder’s probes. But the Huffington Post and the New York Times? Perhaps some dormant “journalistic gene” long suppressed in the liberal media has finally started to reassert itself!

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney (a former reporter himself) was peppered with questions during yesterday’s press briefing about the fact that Attorney General Holder is being investigated for perjury by the House Judiciary Committee.

As you may recall, Holder told the committee that the prosecution of journalists was “not something I’ve ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be wise policy.” And yet Holder signed off on a warrant labeling Fox News reporter James Rosen a potential criminal co-conspirator under the 1917 Espionage Act.

Carney asserted that because Rosen was never formally charged or prosecuted, Holder did not technically commit perjury. That explanation doesn’t pass the straight face test. In fact, it makes the scandal even worse.

At least one reporter reminded Carney that the warrant is a legal document. If the Justice Department never intended to prosecute Rosen and made up the charge in order to get a judge to sign off on the warrant, then the so-called “Justice Department” lied to a judge and Holder approved it!

So, did Holder lie to the House Judiciary Committee or did his Justice Department lie to a judge? Perhaps the best answer is for Mr. Holder to resign quickly before this gets any worse.

Obamacare: You Can’t Keep Your Policy

In a story headlined, “Like Your Health Care Policy? You May Be Losing It,” the Associated Press is finally acknowledging what critics of Obamacare have warned about for years: Obamacare will cause many people to lose their existing health insurance coverage.

In the coming months, millions of Americans will be told that their current policies are being cancelled. Why? Because “their current policies aren’t up to the basic standards of President Barack Obama’s health care law.”

So here we go with the Big-Government-knows-best approach. And so much for the president’s promise, “If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period.”

The Real Benghazi Scandal

Yesterday we reported that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee had issued a subpoena to the State Department demanding “all documents and communications referring or relating to the Benghazi talking points.” On Fox News last night, columnist Charles Krauthammer offered his thoughts on the possible origin of those talking points. Here’s what he suggested could be the real scandal:

“The biggest scandal of all, the biggest question is what was the president doing in those eight hours. He had a routine meeting at five o’clock. He never after during the eight hours when our guys have their lives in danger, he never called the Secretary of Defense, he never calls the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, he never called the CIA Director. …
“But five hours in he calls the Secretary of State. And after the phone call she releases a statement essentially about the video and how we denounce any intolerance. It looks as if the only phone call is to construct a cover story at a time when the last two Americans who died were still alive and fighting for their lives. There’s the scandal and that has to be uncovered.”

“Obamagate”

A new Quinnipiac poll provides fresh evidence that the scandals swirling around the Obama Administration are taking a toll on the president’s support. At the beginning of the month, the president enjoyed a net positive rating of 48% approval to 45% disapproval. Today it is flipped: 49% of voters disapprove of his job performance and 45% approve.

The president took the biggest hit among independent voters: Only 37% of independent voters approve of Obama’s job performance, while 57% disapprove. Just a few weeks ago, the president was down only six points with independent voters. Now he’s down 20 points!

Here are some other numbers that should concern the White House: Two years ago, 63% felt Obama was “honest and trustworthy.” Today voters are divided 49% to 47%. And when asked whether a special prosecutor should be empowered to investigate the IRS scandal, 76% of voters said “Yes!”

As we have noted before, there are numerous comparisons in the current IRS and media scandals to the Nixon Administration. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is running a new web ad hitting the president hard for the “culture of intimidation” that has permeated Washington.

And there is this video that compares Obama’s reactions to the scandals and Nixon’s responses to Watergate. The similarities are stunning! It’s almost as if the Obama press office deliberately decided to emulate Nixon’s media strategy.

“Breadwinner Moms”

A Pew Research report released yesterday found that women are the primary earners in 40% of American homes today. That is a huge cultural shift. Fifty years ago, women were the breadwinners in just 11% of homes.

Most of the media have seized on this report as a triumph of modern feminism. While it is certainly laudable that more women are graduating college and making gains in the workforce, the underlying facts in this report do not suggest a “feminist triumph.”

One reason many women today are earning more than their husbands is because the Great Recession disproportionately affected men. By some estimates, jobs held by men accounted for 70% of the losses from 2007 to 2009, leading many economists to label it a “mancession.” In these households, working women are earning more, but the family is by no means better off.

Here’s something else to keep in mind: 63% of the “breadwinner mom” households are led by single mothers. The Pew report only underscores the staggering breakdown of the traditional family in America.

Scandal Update

Here are the latest developments in the various scandals surrounding the Obama Administration.

  • NBC News reports that letters received from conservative organizations clearly indicate that the IRS’ politically-motivated targeting of Christian and Tea Party groups “did not solely originate in the agency’s Cincinnati office.” Jay Sekulow with the American Center for Law and Justice is representing more than two dozen groups targeted by the IRS. He told NBC: “We’ve dealt with 15 agents, including tax law specialists — that’s lawyers — from four different offices, including (the) Treasury (Department) in Washington, D.C. So the idea that this is a couple of rogue agents in Cincinnati is not correct.”

In addition, it has been reported that former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman visited the Obama White House more than 100 times during 2010 and 2011. In contrast, Commissioner Mark Everson visited the Bush White House only once during his tenure, from 2003 to 2007.

No doubt some of Shulman’s visits were related to the IRS’ role in the enforcement of Obamacare. But Shulman’s frequent visits took place when the IRS harassment of conservative organizations was at its peak. Democrats love to point out that Shulman was appointed IRS Commissioner by George W. Bush. But they neglect to mention that he is also a Democrat donor, giving $500 to the Democrat National Committee when Bush was up for reelection in 2004.

  • Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, wants to know more about the false Benghazi talking points used by U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice. Yesterday, Rep. Issa issued a subpoena to Secretary of State John Kerry demanding the State Department turn over “all documents and communications referring or relating to the Benghazi talking points.” Issa gave Kerry until June 7th to comply.

  • The left’s support for Obama is beginning to crack. Liberal law professor Jonathan Turley has penned an op-ed in USA Today demanding President Obama fire Attorney General Eric Holder for his “ignoble legacy,” adding that Holder’s “sins should be fatal for any attorney general.” To give you some idea of just how left-wing Turley is, he has filed suit on behalf of “marriage equality” for polygamists in Utah.

Senate GOP Goes To Court

Many conservatives have been rightly concerned about the lawlessness of this administration and the apparent lack of a response. Here is some good news: There has been a response, but it just takes time.

As you may recall, Barack Obama has expressed his frustration with the limits placed on him by the system of checks and balances our Founders created. Well, those checks and balances work both ways — making it difficult for the other branches of government to check the executive.

Consider the example of Obama’s extraordinary recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Obama made the appointments when there wasn’t a congressional recess. Two federal courts have now declared those appointments unconstitutional. Of course, the Obama Administration is appealing to the Supreme Court.

Yesterday all 45 Senate Republicans signed on to a brief urging the high court to strike down Obama’s recess appointments. In a statement, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell argued, “If [President Obama] can override Senate procedures and second-guess its account of its actions, there is no telling what mischief he can achieve.” If the Supreme Court agrees, everything the NLRB has done could well be declared invalid.

“The Enemy Is Everywhere”

The BBC reported yesterday that British authorities have arrested ten people during a sweep of Islamic extremists. The arrests come in the aftermath of last week’s brutal murder of a British soldier in broad daylight. Not surprisingly, the attack has encouraged other jihadists to lash out.

A British prison guard was kidnapped Sunday by three Muslim inmates and beaten for hours before being rescued by a riot squad.

Recalling World War II-era posters warning, “The enemy is everywhere,” Dame Stella Rimington, the former head of Britain’s intelligence agency MI-5, is calling on British citizens “to act as the eyes and ears” of the police in order to expose radical Islamists. Rimington’s analogy, sadly, is accurate, as radical Islam has been tolerated for too long and has spread throughout parts of England.

Also over the weekend, a French soldier in a Paris suburb was stabbed in the neck. French police today arrested a 21 year-old Muslim convert who reportedly confessed to the attack and who “acted in the name of his religious ideology.”

The French Interior Minister admitted to the media that “no fewer than 120 French jihadists” have left the country to fight in Syria’s civil war, with the vast majority of them fighting alongside Al Qaeda terrorists. It is believed that 30 have returned to France.

Bachmann Announces Retirement

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) announced this morning that she will not seek reelection to Congress next year. Rep. Bachmann, chairman of the House Tea Party Caucus, is a stalwart conservative. A former tax attorney, Bachmann, the mother of five children who also welcomed 23 foster children into her home, has been a passionate advocate for traditional values.

Like any staunch conservative who dares to stand up for faith and family, she has been sliced, diced and smeared by the left and its media allies. No doubt she is looking forward to some quiet time with her family away from the glare of a hostile media. While her leadership in Washington will be missed, I am certain that she will remain an influential voice for our values for many years to come!

Perjury In Holder’s Future?

Attorney General Eric Holder may be in hot water. The House Judiciary Committee is investigating whether Holder committed perjury during his testimony on the Associated Press phone records scandal two weeks ago.

During an exchange with Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) on whether the Justice Department could use the 1917 Espionage Act to prosecute reporters, Holder said:

“In regard to potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material — this is not something I’ve ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be wise policy.”
But as we told you Friday, that is not true. NBC News reported that Holder personally signed off on the warrant authorizing the seizure of Fox News reporter James Rosen’s email and phone records — specifically citing the Espionage Act and labeling Rosen a possible criminal co-conspirator.

Attorney General Holder has already been held in contempt of Congress for refusing to release documents on Operation Fast and Furious. He has stayed in his position because the president supports him. But now even the liberals at the Huffington Post are demanding Holder step down.

Amnesty Bill In Jeopardy?

For months we have been told that the “stars are aligned” for comprehensive immigration reform to finally pass Congress and be signed into law. But last week the quasi-amnesty bill that is such a priority for President Obama and his Democrat allies took a couple of unexpected hits.

  • Two unions that represent law enforcement and immigration officials announced their opposition to the Senate’s bill, citing its lack of border and interior enforcement. A recent Fox News poll found that 73% of voters want improved border security measures implemented BEFORE any other reforms take effect.
  • Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) stunned many in Washington when he said the bill doesn’t yet have the 60 votes needed to pass. Political and media elites have been chattering about the bill getting as many as 70 votes in the Senate.
  • Thursday the House GOP leadership issued a joint statement effectively declaring the Senate’s bill “dead on arrival.” Its statement read in part, “While we applaud the progress made by our Senate colleagues, there are numerous ways in which the House will approach the issue differently. The House remains committed to fixing our broken immigration system, but we will not simply take up and accept the bill that is emerging in the Senate if it passes.”

Obamacare Backlash Grows

The implementation of Obamacare kicks into high gear on January 1, 2014. As the calendar counts down, even some of the president’s liberal allies are finding it impossible to square Obama’s rhetoric with reality. One labor union, the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, has already called for the “repeal or complete reform” of Obamacare. Now other unions are speaking out.

Joe Hansen, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, essentially accused Obama of lying. Hansen told the Associated Press, “[Obamacare] makes an untruth out of what the president said — that if you like your insurance, you could keep it. That is not going to be true for millions of workers now.”

Union bosses assumed that their concerns would be addressed after the 2012 election. In January, a top Teamsters leader said, “We are going back to the administration to say that this is not acceptable.” But despite private talks with administration officials, the unions have failed in their attempts to change the law.

As a result, they are warning that Democrats could suffer in next year’s election. Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Firefighters, warned, “It started out with some anxiety, and I think it’s translated into more anger.”

I have no expectation that Mr. Schaitberger will become a card-carrying member of the Tea Party movement anytime soon. But Democrats should be worried. Union members who are just now learning the truth are not the only ones upset with Obamacare.

Obamacare Deeply Unpopular

Barack Obama and congressional Democrats rammed through Obamacare in 2010 after convincing themselves that the public would embrace the healthcare takeover legislation over time. But three years later, two recent polls indicate that Obamacare still remains deeply unpopular.

A CNN poll released yesterday found 54% of adults opposed Obamacare, while just 43% supported it. Last week a Fox News poll found that 56% of voters thought it would be better “to go back to the health care system that was in place in 2009.” Just 34% felt we should keep Obamacare.

There was no good news for liberals. Looking ahead, only 26% voters expect Obamacare will make health care better, while 53% say health care will be worse off in the future if Obamacare remains in effect. Even voters 35 and under wanted to get rid of Obamacare by a 20-point margin of 55%-to-35%.

MVP Player On Defense Over Marriage

The Minnesota Viking’s Adrian Peterson is the NFL’s Most Valuable Player for his offensive stats, but he’s playing defense today for daring to defend normal marriage. During a recent interview, Peterson was asked his thoughts about Vikings punter Chris Kluwe, an outspoken advocate for same-sex marriage. Here’s what Peterson said:

“I have relatives who are gay. I’m not biased towards them. I still treat them the same. I love ’em. But again, I’m not with that. That’s not something I believe in.”
Clearly, Peterson is not a hater. He was simply voicing the opinion of many Americans, including the president of the United States, at least up to one year ago. No doubt Peterson has seen what has happened to athletes who voice opposition to the gay agenda. Yet he still has the courage to speak up.

As I write this, he is probably living through a nightmare worse than anything he has confronted on the football field. By the time the sun goes down today, Peterson will likely feel like he doesn’t have a friend in the world. (Remember Chris Culliver?)

The gay rights smear machine will do its best to make an example out of Peterson. Marketing gurus and investment counselors will tell Peterson he must apologize if he hopes to hold on to any lucrative endorsement contracts. The Vikings management may force him to go through “sensitivity training.”

Men and women of faith who believe in normal marriage should not be afraid to speak out! Please let Adrian Peterson know that you stand with him. Click here to leave a comment on his Facebook page.

I will share some reflections on Memorial Day in a few hours, but as we head into this holiday weekend there are some important news items I want to comment on. Here are some brief thoughts on the headlines.

Obama Declares War On Terror Over

Yesterday President Obama tried to change the subject away from all the scandals engulfing his administration by giving a major address on foreign policy. He effectively declared an end to the “global war on terror.” Well, we weren’t the ones who declared war, and one side doesn’t get to unilaterally decide it is over unless they are surrendering.

Obama also announced that he plans to dramatically scale back drone attacks. Ironically, this administration has launched more drone attacks than any previous administration, and it is one of Obama’s more popular policies. But Obama announced that future drone strikes would be limited to situations where “there must be near-certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured,” meaning there will be far fewer drone strikes against suspected terrorists in the future.

Lastly, the president announced another all-out effort to close Gitmo and bring the terrorist thugs to a prison near you.

Holder Ordered Fox Seizures

NBC News reported last night that Attorney General Eric Holder personally signed the orders to seize personal and work phones and email records of Fox News reporter James Rosen. What is so shocking in this case is that Holder cited the Espionage Act and considered Rosen a criminal co-conspirator and a flight risk!

In response to the growing media outrage, President Obama has ordered the Justice Department to review its guidelines on investigating journalists. In other words, Holder will be reviewing his own work.

Lerner On Leave

Lois Lerner, the director of IRS tax-exempt office at the center of the Tea Party targeting scandal, has been placed on administrative leave with pay after refusing to testify before Congress. Acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel reportedly asked for her resignation, but she refused. So, her “punishment” is that she is not allowed to go to work, and your punishment is that you must still continue to pay her!

Boy Scouts Cave

Despite strong opposition from parents and leaders, 1,400 delegates at the Boy Scouts of America’s annual meeting voted to reverse the BSA’s current membership policy and permit homosexual scouts as members, while continuing to ban homosexual scout masters. With this decision the BSA has demoralized its strongest supporters and guaranteed that it will have fewer defenders in the future.

Meanwhile the left is not satisfied with this so-called “compromise.” Homosexual rights groups are demanding a role in enforcing the new policy, and they are also vowing to keep pressuring the Scouts until they lift the ban on gay leaders.

Islam In Europe

Peaceful, tolerant, socialist Sweden has been stunned by four nights of rioting in predominantly Muslim neighborhoods of Stockholm. One police spokesman said, “We have never had this kind of riots before in Stockholm, not this amount of riots and not this number of hot areas.”

According to a BBC report, mobs of youth are starting fires, burning cars or shops, and then waiting “for emergency services to attend a fire before attacking them.” That is a tactic commonly used by Palestinian jihadists.

We reported yesterday about the incredibly barbaric attack by two British-born Muslims who decapitated a British soldier at a base near London. They stayed at the scene for a considerable period of time while horrified onlookers listened to them spout the rhetoric of jihad.

Of course, following the predictable pattern, the British government and various news outlets were hesitant to describe this as Islamic terrorism “until there has been a full investigation.”

But outraged Brits took to the streets chanting, “Enough is enough!” There were what appeared to be a few retaliatory incidents at several mosques. One mosque leader condemned the beheading, saying, “It was an appalling act of terror — but it wasn’t Islamic in any way. I wish it wasn’t described like that.”

This is the pattern we have seen time and again throughout the Western world. After every atrocity — 9/11, the Fort Hood shooting, the London subway bombings, the Bali bombing, the Beslan school attack and a long litany of attacks in Israel — we are told it had nothing to do with Islam. But go through the list of names of the murderous thugs who committed these atrocities and you will not find a Presbyterian among them.

Western governments and Muslim leaders are lecturing the wrong audience when they chant this almost magical incantation, “It had nothing to do with Islam,” to those of us who are witnessing all of this horror. If it has nothing to do with Islam then there must be a lot of confused Muslims, because they almost always make sure to tell us it had everything to do with Islam.

Witnesses to yesterday’s London beheading said the murderers shouted, “Allahu Akbar” — “Allah is greatest.” They stated, “We want to start a war in London tonight.” Like the Tsarnaev brothers, they claimed the attack was in revenge for the war in Afghanistan, saying, “I killed [the soldier] because he killed Muslims and I am fed up with people killing Muslims in Afghanistan.” (By the way, no one in the world — not America, not England, not Israel nor any other Western nation — kills Muslims more than other Muslims.)

One of the attackers even threated to kill children, saying, “You think [Prime Minister] David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start busting our guns? …No, it’s going to be the average guy, like you, and your children.”

Let me say the required politically correct statement: Not every Muslim is a terrorist, nor was every German a Nazi. But it is true that virtually every terrorist who attacks the West is a Muslim.

“Swearing In The Enemy”

Ayaan Hirsi Ali experienced Sharia law firsthand while growing up in Muslim communities in Africa. She took refuge in the Netherlands, where she worked to expose Sharia’s barbaric treatment of women. But radical Islamists there forced her to flee to America. She gained her citizenship last month and wrote a stirring column about her revulsion at the news that the Boston Marathon bombers were naturalized citizens like her.

Ali noted that data from a 2011 Pew survey suggests that “more than 180,000 American Muslims regard suicide bombings as being justified in some way.” Meanwhile the political elites in Washington are engaged in a debate over immigration reform that appears to do nothing to make sure we do not allow in more people like the Tsarnaev brothers.

Ali wrote that the process of becoming a citizen was entirely bureaucratic. Never once was anything done to determine whether she or any of the other 1,834 people naturalized during her ceremony had the appropriate love for and knowledge of what America stands for to justify citizenship. She added, “I believe that we are entitled to filter out would-be citizens who are ideologically and morally opposed to the U.S. and pose a threat to its population.”

How come it takes a naturalized American citizen, who grew up in Islamic countries and saw firsthand the horrors of Sharia law, to promote this commonsense idea?

Speaking of Understanding America…

There was a breathtaking exchange on the Constitution yesterday between Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-MI) and former IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. It was troubling to watch Commissioner Shulman. He said he went to law school and believed he took a course in Constitutional law. Yet this man, who was in charge of an incredibly powerful agency, appeared to be clueless about the owner’s manual of the United States.

From now on I think all nominees for top level posts should be quizzed at their confirmation hearings about their knowledge of the Constitution. Maybe that would help curtail some of these scandals! Perhaps we could get some of the groups whose nonprofit status was delayed by the IRS for wanting to educate the public about the Constitution to offer remedial courses to the Obama IRS and Justice Department!

Don’t Drop Values!

What irony! Just as GOP elites are convincing themselves that they should stop talking about values, a new Gallup poll finds that 72% of Americans believe the nation’s moral values are getting worse.

When we say values, we generally think of the sanctity of life and normal marriage. But there are a lot of other values issues. Why is the American family disintegrating and why don’t we hear politicians addressing it?

When Major Hasan receives over $270,000 in salary while awaiting trial and the people he maimed and wounded are denied the help they need because their wounds were “workplace violence,” that is a reflection of a value judgment. (Republicans should be holding hearings about that too!)

Here’s another one: President Obama is dipping into a values issue today by making a speech about why Gitmo should be closed. That is an expression of his values. He appears to get up in the morning worried about the constitutional rights of terrorists who try to kill American soldiers. Republicans should be pointing out every day that Obama’s values are way out of step with those of the American people.

If Republicans leave all these issues off the table they will never capture the hearts and minds of the American people. If all they talk about is balance sheets and accounting issues, they will never be a majority party again.

That said, my friends, there are many very good conservatives in Congress who are fighting for our values every day. One of them is Rep. Jim Bridenstine, as you can see from his speech on the House floor defending the Boy Scouts and our traditional values.

Benghazi Gaining Traction

For months, liberal elites and their media allies have mocked conservatives for caring about the Benghazi scandal. But watching three grown men — a Marine, a security expert and a career Foreign Service officer — moved to tears by this gross injustice has evidently moved some in Big Media to care enough to start asking questions.

In addition to today’s revelations (see next item) is the fact that other major networks are starting to compete for stories. Other than Fox News, Sharyl Attkisson of CBS has had the field almost entirely to herself. Attkisson is an award-winning journalist who did some good reporting on Operation Fast and Furious.

But she has been fighting with CBS over Benghazi. Politico reported this week, “CBS News executives see Attkisson wading dangerously close to advocacy on the issue… Attkisson can’t get some of her stories on the air.”

That is a perfect marker of the media’s mindset, which has almost turned into a mental disorder. The pro-Obama censors at CBS are accusing her of “advocacy” for daring to question the administration. That is exactly what a free press is supposed to do!

We expect the independent, free media to hold those in power — whoever they are — accountable to the people. Our Founding Fathers believed so much in a free press that they put the right to free speech in the First Amendment!

Obama White House Ordered Political Edits To Talking Points

Now Jonathan Karl at ABC News has joined Attkisson and Fox with breaking news this morning that the Obama White House ordered the CIA talking points to be altered for political reasons.

According to Karl, “ABC News has obtained 12 different versions of the talking points that show they were extensively edited.”

Now, we already know that the talking points were edited, but a bit of history is useful here. Consider what White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in late November about the talking points:

“Those talking points originated from the intelligence community. They reflect the [intelligence community’s] best assessments of what they thought had happened. The White House and the State Department have made clear that the single adjustment that was made to those talking points by either of those two institutions were changing the word ‘consulate’ to ‘diplomatic facility’…” [Emphasis added.]
Did you get that, my friends? Weeks after key congressional leaders were demanding Susan Rice’s resignation for making false statements, the White House was still insisting that there was only a “single adjustment” to the talking points.

Earlier this week, Carney stated that any changes were purely “stylistic and nonsubstantive.” Really? It took “12 different versions extensively edited” to make nonsubstantive stylistic changes? The CIA must have some really poor writers!

Karl’s sources tell him that it was Victoria Nuland, the State Department’s spokeswoman, who insisted that all references to terrorism be stripped out of the talking points. In one of her emails to the White House, Nuland writes that the CIA’s information about terrorists and Al Qaeda, “could be abused by members of Congress to beat up the State Department for not paying attention to warnings, so why would we want to feed that?”

Here a top State Department official is making a political argument, knowing that the Obama campaign is vulnerable on this issue. The White House clearly understood the danger. From Jonathan Karl’s report:

“In an email dated 9/14/12 at 9:34 p.m. — three days after the attack and two days before Ambassador Rice appeared on the Sunday shows — Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes wrote an email saying the State Department’s concerns needed to be addressed.”
So now the White House is ordering the CIA to change the talking points! General David Petraeus, then Director of the CIA, wasn’t happy about it, but he followed his orders.

Again, it is too early to assess the fallout from these revelations. This news is breaking on a Friday, as many families are heading out of town for college graduations and getting ready for Mother’s Day.

House Republicans are promising more hearings, and there is serious talk of bringing Hillary Clinton back to Capitol Hill for additional testimony — this time under oath.

The evidence of a scandal is beyond dispute. Ron Fournier of National Journal writes today that it is “unseemly” for any White House to try to finesse a tragedy, adding that Obama’s credibility has been damaged.

Victoria Nuland should resign immediately, as should Jay Carney and Ben Rhodes. I hope more journalists will realize there is a real story here of government corruption and cover-up.
