Senate Begins Debate On Second Amendment

The Senate Judiciary Committee today began hearings on legislation aimed at limiting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding American citizens. The committee began the hearing with an emotionally powerful statement from former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot and critically injured two years ago by a madman.

In his opening statement, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, went straight to the core of some of the left’s key talking points. Here are some of his remarks:


“The 1994 assault weapons ban did not stop Columbine.  The Justice Department found the ban ineffective. Scholars have indicated that refining or expanding such legislation will not cut gun violence. …

“We hear that no one needs to carry larger magazines than those that hunters use to shoot deer.  But an attacking criminal, unlike a deer, shoots back. …

“Contrary to what you may have heard, Congress has never prohibited [the Center for Disease Control] from researching gun violence.  Rather, Congress prevented federal research to ‘advocate or promote gun control,’ which some government researchers had been doing under the guise of taxpayer supported science. …”
Senator Grassley’s point about the effectiveness of gun control legislation cannot be overstated. It was reported last night that Hadiya Pendleton, a 15 year-old honors student who had performed with her Chicago-area high school band at President Obama’s inauguration, was shot and killed yesterday on her way home from school.

If strict gun control laws worked, Chicago would be the safest place in the country. But even the New York Times admits, the city with no gun shops or firing ranges, bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, is “laboring to stem a flood of gun violence that contributed to more than 500 homicides last year and at least 40 killings already in 2013.”

In fact, in the last decade more Americans have been shot and killed in Chicago than in Afghanistan.

Immigration Reform: Obama vs. Rubio

The latest debate over immigration reform has just begun, and it’s already off to a rocky start. A bi-partisan coalition of senators offered a set of broad outlines for reform on Monday. Their plan, as of now, hinges on securing the borders before illegal immigrants already in the country can begin down the so-called “pathway to citizenship.”

President Obama yesterday laid out his goals for immigration reform during a speech to a majority Hispanic high school in Las Vegas, Nevada, whose students interrupted his speech with chants of “Si se puede! Si se puede!,” (Yes we can! Yes we can!).

During his remarks, the president made it clear that border security is not his first priority. In fact, he implied that the borders were just fine. But illegal immigration is on the rise. The Border Patrol reported that it made more than 350,000 arrests last year, up 9% from 2011.

We are also learning today that Mexican drug cartels are not just trying to sneak into the country, but they also trying to corrupt our border security agencies.

The Washington Examiner reports that an internal study conducted by the Department of Homeland Security has identified at least “15 incidents in which known associates of Mexican drug cartels tried to infiltrate the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency.” In addition, “146 agency officers and agents have been charged with or convicted of corruption-related offenses since Oct. 1, 2004.”

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) warned that Obama’s lax approach to border security could doom any efforts to reform the immigration system. Speaking on the Senate floor yesterday, Rubio said that Obama seemed more interested in starting a “bidding war to see who can come up with the easiest, quickest and cheapest pathway to a green card.”

After the president’s speech, Senator Rubio said, “I am concerned by the president’s unwillingness to accept significant enforcement triggers before current undocumented immigrants can apply for a green card. Without such triggers in place, enforcement systems will never be implemented and we will be back in just a few years dealing with millions of new undocumented people in our country.”

He’s right, of course. That is exactly what happened after the 1986 amnesty and it is why the public reacted so strongly against the amnesty legislation that was proposed during the Bush administration.

Mahmoud’s Menacing Monkey

Iran made a big announcement Monday — it had launched a monkey into space. Many in the elite media mocked the report. “Big deal,” they said. “We did that in the 1949. Nothing to worry about.” They are wrong. This is a big deal, and we should be worried.

Iran is aggressively pursuing nuclear technology. Its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has repeatedly vowed to wipe Israel off the map. Its supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, routinely refers to the United States as the “great Satan.” So, what does the space monkey have to do with any of that? As retired Israeli Brigadier General Asaf Agmon explained:

“[Iran’s] space program is connected to their missile program and the science you need to launch a monkey into space is the same that you need to send a warhead over the Atlantic Ocean, so there’s a connection and the world can’t ignore it.”

Standing With Israel & Against Chuck Hagel

The Senate Armed Services Committee will hold a hearing this Thursday to consider Barack Obama’s ill-conceived and dangerous nomination of former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense.

Last night I was honored to attend a great gathering of pro-Israel Christians in Washington, D.C. With just a week’s notice, Christians United for Israel Action Fund brought 500 people from 46 states to our nation’s capital to stand for a strong national defense and a solid U.S./Israeli alliance, and against the nomination of Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Pastor John Hagee delivered passionate speeches outlining why Hagel would be a disaster for our national security and for the balance of power in the Middle East. I reminded the audience about Hagel’s incredibly bad voting record, but also pointed out his repeated use of rhetoric most often associated with anti-Semites.

Today, the members of Christians United for Israel Action Fund, fired up from our time together last night, visited over 65 Senate offices, making the case against Hagel in person on Capitol Hill. I accompanied Pastor Hagee to a meeting with Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), an outstanding conservative champion and the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

As Iran continues its reckless pursuit of nuclear weapons and its meddling in the Middle East, the nomination of Chuck Hagel sends the worst possible signal of weakness and ambivalence to our enemies as well as our allies.

In fact, I fear that Hagel’s nomination will embolden our enemies and invite acts of aggression and terrorism. Add to this Obama’s recent arms transfer of F-16s and M1 tanks to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-controlled government and you have a prescription for disaster.

Here We Go Again

Yesterday a gang of eight senators — four Democrats and four Republicans — announced plans to try yet again to push comprehensive immigration reform through the Senate. The plan is based largely on a 2007 bill that failed after a bi-partisan filibuster.

We don’t know much at this point. All the senators offered yesterday was a brief outline of principles. The details will follow later. But as the saying goes, “The devil is in the details.”

We do know that this plan includes a “pathway to citizenship” for illegal immigrants in the country. However, the senators claim they are making border security a priority because illegal immigrants would not be allowed to apply for citizenship until the borders are secured and verifiable systems are in place to make sure that foreign visitors are not overstaying their visas. The plan would also require the use of an employer verification system.

Critics are blasting the plan because it essentially grants illegal immigrants an immediate “probationary legal status,” allowing them to stay and work in the country as long as they can pass a background check. This is a quasi-amnesty that effectively codifies the controversial executive orders halting deportations that Barack Obama issued last summer.

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has been involved in this effort. He called into Rush Limbaugh’s show today to stress that he would not back any final bill that did not include strict border security triggers.

Meanwhile, President Obama is unveiling his plans for immigration reform at a rally in Las Vegas today. According to various reports, the president’s proposal would have a faster pathway to citizenship because it would not include border security mandates. No surprise there.

Obama’s plan is also expected to pander to the homosexual rights crowd by granting green cards to the foreign same-sex spouses of U.S. citizens regardless of the marriage laws of their states. Leave it to Obama to make gay marriage a priority in immigration reform!

Boy Scouts Lose Merit Badge For Courage

After years of harassment, lawsuits, boycotts and the loss of corporate sponsorships, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) confirmed yesterday that it is considering a new policy that would open the door to allowing open homosexuals to serve as scout masters.

Last summer, a special committee reaffirmed the current ban on homosexual scout masters as “absolutely the best policy.” But the sudden decision to revisit the policy is reportedly being driven by two corporate CEOs on the BSA’s board — Randall Stephenson of AT&T and James Turley of Ernst & Young.

Rather than reversing the policy completely, the Boy Scouts of America appears poised to adopt a “no-policy policy,” essentially leaving the decision on scout masters to locally chartered units. Below is an excerpt of a statement from the BSA:


“Currently, the BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation. This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation, and the chartered organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with each organization’s mission, principles, or religious beliefs. …
“The Boy Scouts would not, under any circumstances, dictate a position to units, members, or parents. Under this proposed policy, the BSA would not require any chartered organization to act in ways inconsistent with that organization’s mission, principles, or religious beliefs.”

In other words, churches that sponsor Boy Scout units would not be forced to accept homosexual counselors.

The left has created a juggernaut using every cultural institution — the media, schools, corporations, government — to attack the family and turn common sense on its head. What was once considered deviant is now seen as normal. And what was once regarded as healthy and virtuous is condemned as bigotry. Groups like the Boy Scouts come under constant pressure and are threatened with funding cutoffs. Most eventually cave in.

Sending Women To War

The Pentagon made history last week when Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced that he was lifting the ban on women serving in frontline, combat positions. The new policy is not going into effect immediately. It will be phased in, and the services will be permitted to request exemptions for specific posts such as elite units like Navy SEALs or Army Rangers.

Many on the left hailed the decision, saying equality demands equal opportunity for women in the military. President Obama offered his “strong support for this decision,” which he described as “another step toward fulfilling our nation’s founding ideals of fairness and equality.” He went on to say that “every American can be proud that our military will grow even stronger with our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters playing a greater role in protecting this country we love.”

Polling suggests overwhelming public support for the idea. A Gallup poll released Friday found that nearly three-quarters of the public would vote for a law allowing women to serve in combat. But I wonder how many Americans have really given the idea much thought and serious consideration.

For example, every teenage man must register with the Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday. It is doubtful that a draft is coming. After 9/11 the nation fought wars in Afghanistan and Iraq without a draft. But the law requires that all of our sons register just in case of some catastrophic emergency. The world is a very unpredictable place and becomes more dangerous every day.

If women will now be in frontline combat, is registering our daughters and granddaughters for the draft next? After all, that would be the “equality” that Obama and the feminists say they want. But I doubt if modern feminists and large swaths of the public will be very pleased when their daughters come of age and have to give their contact information to Uncle Sam.

Obama’s Bizarro World

Obama’s world is a strange place indeed. Over the weekend, the president, who just hailed your daughter’s right to engage in combat, said that if he had a son he would be reluctant to let him play football — because he might get hurt.

Speaking of the strange world the president occupies… Because he is so concerned about guns getting into the wrong hands, the president spent the past week building pressure to make it as hard as possible for law-abiding citizens to purchase certain firearms. And in the same week, he authorized the transfer of F-16 fighter jets and Abrams tanks to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, who under any measurement should qualify as the wrong people! Obama wants to limit guns to average Americans but give weapons of mass destruction to jihadists!

Media Still Shielding Obama

Barack Obama has given two major interviews in recent days — one print (The New Republic) and one television (60 Minutes). With all the news of recent days, either interview would have been a terrific opportunity for a journalist to ask the president of the United States serious questions about important issues.

That did not happen. As it turns out, both interviews were almost entirely devoid of substance. That is a damning indictment of the left-wing bias of Big Media.

Consider the much-hyped Obama/Clinton interview with “60 Minutes,” which bills itself as America’s leading investigative journalism show. But the hardnosed “60 Minutes” team got all tingly when it came to questioning the two gods of American liberalism.

If you didn’t watch it, Yahoo News has a column identifying the “five takeways” from the interview:

  • The 2008 Clinton/Obama feud is over.
  • Obama is happy with Clinton’s loyal performance.
  • Some think Obama is “anointing” Hillary for 2016.
  • CBS was happy to be used by Obama to boost its ratings.
  • And, lastly, Hillary is feeling better since her fall and concussion.


That sums it up pretty well. Dan Gainor of the Media Research Center blasted CBS reporter Steve Kroft for wasting so much of his precious time on softball questions. “Kroft’s questions weren’t just softballs,” Gainor wrote. “More than half resulted in laughter from Obama or Clinton and sometimes both. A couple were so bad that even Kroft laughed as well.” The left is in a happy mood, even though a majority of the country is fearful about the future.

The New Republic interview wasn’t much better. The most pressing issue for the left-wing publication appeared to be Obama’s inability to get the GOP to cave in more often. Consider this question: “Are there any forces for reform within the Republican Party, people you’ve been able to establish some sort of working relationship with?”

Obama responded by saying that while he, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi want to work with congressional Republicans, it doesn’t happen because Fox News and Rush Limbaugh are “punishing” Republicans for “working with a Democrat on a bill of common interest.”

Rush Limbaugh said today that this latest attack by Obama against him and Fox News is the kind of tactic you would expect in a dictatorship. He is right. Even though the media overwhelmingly favor Obama, any dissent is too much for “O.”

March For Life

The March for Life is always a highlight of my year in Washington. I spoke to a number of pro-life groups this morning, including the Right to Life delegation from my home state of Kentucky.

The good folks who come here each year, often braving the worst of Washington’s winter weather, give me hope that someday our nation will see Roe v. Wade for what it is: a rejection of our nation’s highest ideal — that liberty is a gift from God and that each of us has been endowed by our Creator with the right to life.

Forty years ago, the Supreme Court denied that right to unborn children. Roe v. Wade is fundamentally based on the same philosophy as Dred Scott. Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. The Supreme Court decided that he was no different than a horse or any other piece of property. As a black man, the court declared he had no rights we were bound to respect. Scott’s life could be decided by someone else.

That is fundamentally the same decision that the court made in Roe v. Wade when it held that the unborn child had no rights we were bound to respect; that life in the womb could be snuffed out by someone else’s choice.

There is tremendous irony that the first president of color, who surely sees the evil of Dred Scott, is the most aggressive defender of Roe v. Wade. So much so that he has promoted abortion overseas while he tries to force religious believers to pay for abortions here.

Roe Will Fall

While Roe v. Wade has stood for 40 years, it stands on very flimsy ground, and I believe it will fall.

Its moral flaws are self-evident. The court’s majority claimed in 1973 that it was in no position then to “speculate” as to when life begins. Basic biology has always been clear on that point, but ultrasound technology has given us a window to the womb, so we can now witness the life growing there.

But as a matter of law, even liberals freely admit that Roe is deeply flawed. In a column this week, Tim Carney wrote about abortion’s “foundation of lies.” Consider this excerpt:


“‘One of the most curious things about Roe,‘ wrote liberal Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe ‘is that, behind its own verbal smokescreen, the substantive judgment on which it rests is nowhere to be found.’ Alan Dershowitz, another legendary liberal Harvard Law professor, called Roe ‘judicial activism’ lacking ‘clear governing constitutional principles.’
“Even [Justice] Ruth Bader Ginsburg called Roe ‘Heavy-handed judicial intervention’ that ‘was difficult to justify.’

“‘As a matter of constitutional interpretation and judicial method, Roe borders on the indefensible,’ wrote Ed Lazarus, an Obama administration appointee and avowed pro-choicer who clerked for the decision’s author, Justice Harry Blackmun.”

There are more examples, but you get the point, which brings me to my next point. The men and women we elect to public office appoint and confirm the justices who sit on the Supreme Court. On the issue of life, public opinion is moving our way. Men and women of faith must remain engaged in the political arena so we can get pro-life judges nominated and confirmed.

Obama Overruled

Barack Obama got smacked down today by one of the most important courts in the country — the Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. In a unanimous decision, three federal judges declared Obama’s appointments to the National Labor Relations Board to be unconstitutional.

Obama made the appointments in January 2012 when the Senate was not in recess. Yet Obama claimed the power to unilaterally make the recess appointments anyway because most senators were out of town and no votes were being taken.

Under Obama’s logic, he could, without congressional approval, make recess appointments every weekend. The court strongly rejected Obama’s position, writing in its opinion, “Allowing the president to define the scope of his own appointment power would eviscerate the Constitution’s separation of powers.”

The ruling likely invalidates hundreds of decisions made by the board. Prior to Obama’s illegal appointments, the board did not have a functioning quorum.

Whenever Obama pulls a stunt like these illegal appointments, I get an avalanche of emails asking, “Why aren’t Republicans fighting back? Why do they let him get away with this?” Well, my friends, they did fight back. They didn’t let him get away with it.

In our system of divided government, courts settle disputes between the branches of government. Senator Mitch McConnell and Speaker John Boehner joined lawsuits challenging Obama’s appointments, and, while it took a year, they prevailed.

Boehner Gets It (Finally?)

I know from reading the emails I get every day that Speaker John Boehner would probably not win an award for being Washington’s most popular conservative. But speaking before the Ripon Society this week, he made it clear that he understands what the conservative movement is confronting in the Obama White House. Here’s what Boehner said:


“And given what we heard yesterday about the president’s vision for his second term, it’s pretty clear to me that he knows he can’t do any of that as long as the House is controlled by Republicans. So we’re expecting over the next 22 months to be the focus of this Administration as they attempt to annihilate the Republican Party. And let me just tell you, I do believe that is their goal — to just shove us into the dustbin of history.”
Boehner gets it, my friends. He knows that everything this White House does is intended to make Republicans look bad and to turn voters against conservative values. Sadly, they appear to be succeeding.

And what made Boehner’s comments all the more extraordinary was the venue. The Ripon Society is not the Heritage Foundation or the American Conservative Union. It describes itself as a “public policy advocacy organization representing all Americans through moderate, progressive policy formation.” Yet that was the place where Speaker Boehner warned that Barack Obama plans to “annihilate the Republican Party.”

The difficulty is how we move forward. As I have often noted, conservatives can’t govern the country from the House of Representatives alone. Barack Obama is the president. Harry Reid controls the Senate. The left-wing media distort anything conservatives say, and a massive left-leaning federal bureaucracy frustrates whatever conservatives try to do.

Boehner acknowledged that conservatives are facing “an environment that is going to be far more hostile than anything that I think we’ve seen for a long, long time.” He added that congressional Republicans have to pick their battles carefully.

I agree — they do need to proceed carefully. But there is a difference between being careful and running for cover every time Obama launches another barrage of distortions and invective.

I have no doubt that will there will be disagreements over strategy from time to time. But we must always remember how high the stakes are, and that our movement has no chance whatsoever if we allow ourselves to become demoralized and divided.

No Budget, No Pay

Here’s one example of how House Republicans are fighting smarter. Yesterday the House passed legislation to temporarily suspend the debt ceiling. This avoids for now a potential standoff that could have had catastrophic effects on the economy here at home and around the world.

The House wisely also included a provision that requires members of Congress to pass a budget. If they don’t, their salaries will be suspended. As you may know, the Democrat Senate has failed to pass a budget for four years. Try running a business or your family finances like that!

According to a recent Fox News poll, 83% of the public believes federal spending is out of control. And a Rasmussen poll found that 81% of likely voters believe members of Congress should take a big pay cut until the budget is balanced.

Through this legislation, House Republicans avoided the dangers of being blamed for a default, while tapping into public anger over spending to highlight the failure of Senate Democrats to do their jobs. When the bill came up for a vote, 43% of House Democrats voted for it!

Obama: The Great Divider

In 2008 Barack Obama was swept into office on a wave of “hope and change.” He promised to transcend partisanship, and many well-meaning men and women saw in Obama’s election the culmination of Martin Luther King’s dream.

But hope in Obama turned out to be a pipedream. No, actually it turned into a nightmare. His economic policies have given us “unprecedented stagnation.”

On his radio show yesterday, Rush Limbaugh encouraged his listeners to hang in there and fight on, saying that socialism always fails and “Obamaism” will fail here too.

But Rush also had a warning about another part of Obama’s agenda. The left-wing agenda is based partly on envy and the idea that Big Government is the “great equalizer.” Just contrast the Occupy Wall Street movement with the Tea Party movement.

Rush warned his audience that Obama was dividing the country along racial and class lines. Consider this excerpt from his show yesterday:

“This country is being divided purposely along racial lines and class lines. I find it really stunning. We are going backwards in this country. We are separating people by class. We are separating people by race. … The Obama people are thriving by telling their voters who they ought to hate, who they ought to oppose, who they ought to try to eliminate, wipe out, in a political sense, and it’s all based on race or other forms of ethnicity. It’s terrible.
“And now the Gallup poll is out and we’ve lost our optimism. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence. The level of optimism in this country is at a low not seen since 1979, Jimmy Carter. Only 39% of the people in this country are optimistic about the country. …

“We’re in the midst here of designed class and race wars. They’re brewing out there. The president, in an inaugural address, the president of the United States was filled with venom for his political opponents, and there are 60 some odd million of them who voted against him. It’s not just the Republicans in Washington. There’s 67 million Americans who voted against Obama. He declared war against them, too. He declared war against Republicans and, by extension, anybody who voted for them.

“We’ve got the biggest domestic challenge this country’s faced in a long time, under the guise of fixing all of these horrors that went on in our past. We’re heading right back to them. We are reconstructing those horrors under the guise of fixing it all, finally.”

This is why we cannot give in to despair and give up on America. As Abraham Lincoln warned in his time, “We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.”

Women To The Front

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced yesterday that he was lifting the ban on women serving in frontline combat positions. I guess we all misunderstood what Obama meant when he talked about the “war on women.” Apparently he really meant that he wanted more women to go to war.

Hillary On The Hill

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton finally testified on Capitol Hill concerning what she knew about the murderous attack that took the lives of four brave Americans at our consulate in Benghazi, Libya. As expected, there were no major revelations from Clinton who, while admitting she was “responsible,” denied she should be blamed.

Secretary Clinton did admit that she never read the repeated requests for additional security at the consulate. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) suggested Clinton should have been relieved of her duties for not reading the cables.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) expressed his frustration with Clinton’s lack of clear answers, saying, “Here we are, four months later, and we still don’t have the basic information. The American people deserve to know answers and they certainly don’t deserve false answers.” 

Clinton insisted she was not involved in producing the inaccurate talking points used by Ambassador Susan Rice on five major talk shows claiming the attacks were due to protests about an anti-Islamic film. When pressed by Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) about the administration’s shifting explanations for the attacks, Secretary Clinton lost her temper and shouted, “What difference would it make?”

Let’s answer her question. The difference is that when the administration blamed a film it was suggested that Americans died because of our First Amendment rights. Our liberty is not the problem, Mrs. Clinton. When you tell the truth — that it was because of Al Qaeda-linked extremists — you educate the American people about the real enemy and the evil agenda of radical Islam.

Al Qaeda On The March

When the sorry history of the Obama years is finally written, one of the most bitter chapters will be the colossal failure of his naïve foreign policy. The New York Times reported yesterday that some of the jihadists involved in the Benghazi attacks were also part of the recent raid on an energy facility in Algeria that left more than three dozen hostages dead, including several Americans.

Contrary to Obama’s claims, Al Qaeda and its allies have not been defeated. On Obama’s watch, pro-American leaders have been replaced with anti-American dictators or chaos. That strategic shift has made North Africa and the Middle East a more dangerous place for Israel and the United States.

Even now evidence of Obama’s failure is obvious. For example, just like Egypt and the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Obama administration was so focused on removing Muammar Qadhafi that it lost sight of what would happen once he was gone. Libyan weapons, including shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, are turning up all over the Middle East. Weapons used in the attack in Algeria apparently originated in Libya.

Here’s an easy prediction: As the U.S. shoots its way out of Afghanistan and pivots to the Pacific, the Middle East will be left to the tender mercies of a nuclear-armed Iran and its terrorist proxies. We will be leaving behind thousands of Americans working in the energy industry, in trade groups, in religious ministries, etc. — all of whom will be targets for jihadists.

Expect to see more Americans taken hostage or worse in the days ahead. Expect the media never to point to Obama’s failed policies as the reason.

Polling As Propaganda

Once again nervous nellies on the right and political analysts on the left are citing some distorted polls to suggest the country is more supportive of abortion and less pro-life. They do this by citing growing support for the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision.

This is nothing new. Polls have routinely shown support for Roe to be significantly higher than support for abortion generally for the simple reason that the public doesn’t know what Roe did. Adding to the confusion is that pollsters with an agenda (like the recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll) often inaccurately claim that Roe permitted abortion only in the first trimester.

But Roe led to a legal regime in which abortion is allowed in all nine months of pregnancy for almost any reason — an extreme position supported by a very small minority of the public and Barack Obama.

Don’t be fooled, my friends. The overwhelming majority of Americans support limits to abortion on demand. Last year, Gallup found that the percentage of Americans identifying as “pro-choice” hit a record low.

The Classless Left

Obama’s inaugural showed how little class the left has. When Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) made his way down the Capitol steps for the inauguration, the pro-Obama crowd started booing. Now we know who started the cascade of boos. According to National Review, Dan Freeman “proudly announced” it on his Facebook page, posting “Just started the crowd booing when Paul Ryan came out.”

Freeman is not just some overly enthusiastic Obama volunteer. As National Review notes, Freeman is a lawyer in the Voting Section at the Justice Department. He came to that post from the New York Civil Liberties Union, where he helped undermine Bush Administration national security policies as he fought to give the foreign terrorist detainees at GITMO constitutional rights.

By the way, Freeman is not a political appointee. He has burrowed into the civil service, meaning he may be there to undermine the next conservative president.

National Marriage Week

The battle for traditional marriage remains one of the major flashpoints in America’s culture war. Barack Obama cited men “marrying” men as one of the great challenges of our time in his inaugural address. Utah’s ban on polygamy is facing a legal challenge in federal court. And in a matter of weeks, the Supreme Court will hear cases seeking to overturn both state and federal laws defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The news is depressing and, more often than not, there is little the average person can do. That’s why I am so pleased to tell you about National Marriage Week!

Across the country, there will be a grassroots campaign to encourage and strengthen normal marriage during the week of February 7th through the 14th. This effort is led by my good friend Chuck Stetson and the folks at National Marriage Week USA.

National Marriage Week is not about being against something, but rather about promoting what thousands of years of history, academic research and common sense tell us is right — that marriage is the union of one man and one woman and the best environment for raising healthy children and stable societies.

“Obama The Liberated Liberal”

That’s how one left-wing British newspaper described Barack Obama after yesterday’s inaugural address. Obama hasn’t stopped campaigning after his narrow popular vote victory in November. His second inaugural address was more of the same. It was not much different than his standard stump speech, just delivered on a grander stage.

But don’t take my word for it. The Washingon Post’s David Ignatius panned the speech as “flat, partisan and surprisingly pedestrian.” Unbelievably, just days after a leak that his speech would be about uniting America, we got a speech that was clearly designed to divide us and to condemn conservatives to the fringes of American political life.

Twisting Self-Evident Truths

Obama’s speech relied heavily on the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This is the fundamental idea of America’s founding. It is a profoundly moral idea. Abraham Lincoln relied on that paragraph to make the moral case that one man cannot own another. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., built his entire life’s work on that paragraph, declaring it America’s “promissory note” and arguing that its promise was still incomplete. He begged for an America where the color of a man’s skin was irrelevant. The only thing that should matter was the content of a person’s character.

King began his quest for civil rights for black Americans at a time when by every measure the injustice of racism was obvious for all to see — separate water fountains, unequal schools, etc. Barack Hussein Obama’s election is a testament to how far we have come.

How jarring and strange it was to hear Obama cite this same central statement of our Founders, used by Lincoln and King to overcome slavery and racism, to redefine the institution of marriage. Obama said:


“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal, as well.”
Barack Obama made history by being the first president to promote homosexual rights twice in an inaugural address. Does he seriously believe that in a nation that is wrestling with moral decay, runaway debt, broken families and a coarsening culture, men “marrying” men is the issue of our age?

In vast segments of America, minority children are suffering because they have no fathers. The young mothers trying to raise them alone have little prospects. Their streets are unsafe. Their schools are controlled by special interest unions more interested in their own benefits than in academic results. But for Obama, sanctifying sodomy is the challenge of our time.

Still Waging Class Warfare

The inaugural message was also heavy on the class warfare that Obama seems to instinctively gravitate towards. He complained that the “shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it.” Obama said he believed that “America’s prosperity must rest upon the broad shoulders of a rising middle class.”

But his policies of higher taxes, more regulations and bigger government have destroyed the middle class.   And more government spending isn’t the solution. We are spending the equivalent of $60,000 a year per poor person on welfare programs. A substantial portion of that money ends up in the coffers of left-wing pressure groups or in the pockets of federal bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.

A lot of families in our inner cities are successful. They are almost always two-parent families. Obama could have declared war on the gangs making their streets unsafe. He could have taken on the teachers’ unions that are failing our children. He could have challenged the failure of young men and women to form families.

But he did not. No, in Barack and Michelle’s world, it’s not the gangs, irresponsible unions or the breakdown of the family that are responsible for the plight of our inner cities or those struggling in poverty. It’s the “shrinking few who are doing well,” who still aren’t paying their fair, who are to blame.

The War On Carbon

The signal was clear. Barack Obama is going back to the idea that manmade activity helps to determine what the climate is, even though science tells us that the climate regularly changes in cycles. But Obama sees another opportunity to grow the government and transfer wealth, to punish the successful while he frightens people into believing that the earth is doomed unless they follow big government, socialist policies.

Again, don’t take my word for it. Here’s how the New York Times described Mr. Obama’s failed cap and trade tax scheme back in 2009: “Since companies would pass their costs on to customers, Mr. Obama would have the government use most of the revenues for relief to families to offset higher utility bills and related expenses.”

“Most of the revenues” amounted to more than 90% of what the government expected to raise from new carbon taxes. Clearly, cap and trade was nothing more than a vehicle for redistributing wealth. Democrats, already bogged down at the time with Obamacare and facing strong conservative opposition, abandoned cap and trade then. Obama intends to make it a centerpiece of his second term agenda now.

The Power Of Our Potential

Listening to the most pro-abortion president in history quote the Declaration’s self-evident, unalienable rights — the first of which is LIFE — was hard to stomach. And, of course, today is the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Roe v. Wade is based on the same misguided philosophy as Dred Scott — that some humans are not “people” with rights we are bound to respect. There is considerable irony that the first president of color, a supposed constitutional scholar no less, refuses to see this.

But I have confidence that the day is coming when every child will be welcomed into the world and protected under the law. The abortion-rights movement has spent the last 40 years trying to “normalize” abortion, and it is only now acknowledging the failure of those efforts.
