Obama’s Laughable Proposal

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner went to Capitol Hill yesterday to present Obama’s plan for resolving the fiscal cliff. With just 31 days left until virtually every household in America is hit with massive tax increases, you would think Obama would send Geithner with a serious proposal to offer Republican leaders. He didn’t.

But don’t take my word for it. Here’s how Politico described it — “Geithner’s Fiscal Cliff Offer: Obama Wish List.” Here’s what the Washington Post wrote about Obama’s “fresh demands:”

“The proposal, delivered to the Capitol by Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner … satisfies Democrats’ demands that negotiations begin on terms dictated by the newly-reelected president. The offer lacks any concessions to Republicans…After two weeks of talks between the White House and aides to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), it seemed to take Republicans by surprise.”
Today Obama is campaigning in Pennsylvania to sell his demand for higher taxes. So much for the spirit of bi-partisan compromise. But why should anyone be surprised after the most negative campaign in history from an administration that has rammed through its radical agenda by any and every means possible?

Here’s what we know about Obama’s uncompromising offer:

  • Obama is insisting on $1.6 trillion in tax increases, twice what he campaigned on.
  • Obama is also demanding $150 billion in new stimulus spending.
  • Obama is demanding another $30 billion extension in unemployment benefits — an admission that his economic policies have failed to create jobs and grow the economy.
  • Obama is demanding that the death tax go back up to 45% on estates and family farms worth $3.5 million and more. Several influential Senate Democrats from farm states are opposed to that.
  • And Obama is demanding that Congress permanently give up its authority over raising the debt ceiling. So he wants an unlimited credit card too!

Obama’s offer was so ludicrous that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said he “burst into laughter.” He told talk show host Hugh Hewitt that Geithner “ought to be embarrassed.”

How Obama’s numbers add up is a mystery. Raising income tax rates on the “wealthy” generates only about $800 billion. Raising the capital gains tax rate from 15% to 20% brings in an additional $240 billion. But where the additional $600 billion comes from is anyone’s guess.

Columnist Charles Krauthammer wrote: “Obama’s audacious new gambit is not a serious proposal to solve our fiscal problems. It’s a raw partisan maneuver…” Without “serious discretionary cuts, clearly spelled-out entitlement cuts, and real tax reform,” Krauthammer is advising congressional Republicans to “give Obama the full Clinton.” He wrote: “If Obama so loves those Clinton rates, Republicans should say: Then go over the cliff and have them all.” I agree.

Bingo!

Want a glimpse of what liberalism looks like? Check out Detroit. Democrats have dominated Detroit for decades. The city last had a Republican mayor in 1962 — 50 years ago!

Like many states and localities, the city’s public employee union is a major impediment to necessary reforms. During an interview yesterday, Mayor Dave Bing said, “We are in an environment, I think, of entitlement. We’ve got a lot of people who are city workers, who for years and years, 20, 30 years, think they are entitled to a [government] job and all that comes with it.”

The left always cloaks its demand for higher taxes and bigger government in the name of “compassion.” But where is the compassion for the taxpayers and entrepreneurs who are shouldering an increasing burden for bigger and bigger government? Not surprisingly, Detroit is shrinking, and is literally turning out the lights as taxpayers flee.

And The Hypocrisy Award Goes To…

When it comes to finding winners for hypocrisy awards, Washington politicians are always frontrunners, followed closely by Hollywood and media elites. But today’s hypocrisy award goes to a corporate executive.

Now, I’m a fan of free enterprise. But I have never understood the corporate chieftains who back liberal policies and candidates. If I could, I would gladly raise only their taxes!

So let’s consider today’s winner — Costco CEO Jim Sinegal. You may recall that Mr. Sinegal gave a prime-time speech at the Democrat National Convention this year. Presumably, he’s all in for Obama’s tax increases, right? Well, it doesn’t appear that way.

This week Costco announced that it was giving shareholders a special dividend of $7 a share at a total cost of $3 billion. Costco is in such a hurry to rush this dividend out the door by the end of the year that it is actually borrowing the cash to make it happen.

Why the rush? Dividends are currently taxed at 15%. But new tax rates as high as 43.4% on dividends will kick in starting January 1st.

Now get this: Mr. Sinegal owns two million Costco shares, and his wife owns nearly 85,000 shares. He stands to make at least $14 million from the dividend. After taxes, he’ll keep about $12 million. But if he waited until next year, he’d get only $8 million. By cashing in this year, he’s avoiding $4 million in higher Obama taxes. So much for “shared sacrifice.”

I think Joe Biden needs to have a talk with Mr. Sinegal about his “patriotic duty.”

U.N. Recognizes “Palestine”

I want to debunk some misleading headlines resulting from yesterday’s vote by the United Nation’s General Assembly. Some have erroneously suggested that the U.N. created a Palestinian state. No, it didn’t. The General Assembly has no authority to create a new state. The Security Council can do that, but the Security Council did not vote yesterday.

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice may have had difficulty getting it right on Benghazi, but she got it right yesterday when she said, “This resolution does not establish that Palestine is a state.” All the General Assembly did was to make something called Palestine a “non-member observer.”

Not one thing in Gaza will change for the better for a single Palestinian as a result. The only way Palestine can become a state is if the Palestinians reach a negotiated deal with Israel. That isn’t going to happen so long as Iran keeps pouring missiles into Gaza, which the Palestinians are firing into Israel.

Meanwhile, Christians are being slaughtered by radical Muslims in Africa, while Muslims are slaughtering other Muslims in Syria. But the United Nations is obsessed with one thing: shrinking the world’s only Jewish state.

Rice Bombs On The Hill

Susan Rice, the Obama Administration’s ambassador to the United Nations, is making the rounds on Capitol Hill this week. It is widely expected that President Obama will nominate Rice to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. Part of Rice’s mission to Capitol Hill is to introduce herself to the men and women who will be voting on her confirmation. The other part is damage control.

It was Susan Rice whom the Obama Administration sent out on five Sunday television shows after the Benghazi terrorist attack to deny it was a terrorist attack and to blame it on an obscure anti-Islamic film.

General David Petraeus testified that the CIA knew immediately that Al Qaeda jihadists were responsible. But Ambassador Rice’s talking points were edited by top Obama officials. What we don’t know is why those edits were made, and who in the administration made the decision to promote a fairy tale.

Republican Senators, led by John McCain (AZ), Lindsey Graham (SC) and Kelly Ayotte (NH), are demanding answers from Rice and threatening to block her confirmation if she is nominated as Secretary of State.

Yesterday, Rice met with Senators McCain, Graham and Ayotte after Sen. McCain said he was willing to hear her explanation for deceiving the public. It was assumed that Rice’s GOP critics would be calmed by the meeting and that she would emerge in a stronger position.

But Rice bombed. Following their meeting, Sen. Graham said, “We’re not even close to getting the basic answers. …Bottom line, I’m more disturbed than I was before.”

Sen. McCain told reporters, “We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got, and some that we didn’t get.” And Senator Ayotte went so far as to declare that she would “place a hold on anybody who wanted to be promoted for any job who had a role in the Benghazi situation.”

One reason the meeting went so poorly was that the senators were given bad information, which had to be retracted later in the day.

Perception vs. Reality

There are a lot of good conservatives in and out of government who believe that blocking Susan Rice, if she is nominated to Secretary of State, is a fool’s errand. They note that if she were successfully blocked, Obama would only nominate another liberal who could be worse. Senator John Kerry, the current chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, comes to mind.

They also point to Obama’s fake indignation at his recent post-election press conference when asked about opposition to Rice. Obama said:

“If Sen. McCain and Sen. Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. …But for them to go after the U.N. ambassador, who had nothing to do with Benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received — to besmirch her reputation is outrageous.”
Some think Obama is looking for this fight in order to keep his liberal base riled up by once again portraying Republicans as racists and sexists. Obama will then be seen as defending a “vulnerable” minority woman, just like he defended Sandra Fluke from Rush Limbaugh. It’s politics and perception over reality.

No one is trying to besmirch Rice’s reputation. And Obama is the one who made Rice vulnerable in the first place by sending her on national television when by Obama’s own admission she “had nothing to do with Benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on [the edited and bad] intelligence that she had received.”

But as we just learned from the campaign, political perception trumps reality.

Religious Liberty & The Arab Spring

Here’s more evidence of the bitter fruit of the Arab Spring: Reuters reports that an Egyptian court has convicted seven Egyptian Christians for their alleged role in the production of the anti-Islamic film that was used as an excuse for riots throughout the Middle East.

Judge Saif al-Nasr Soliman declared, “The seven accused persons were convicted of insulting the Islamic religion through participating in producing and offering a movie that insults Islam and its prophet.” Their sentence: Death.

Remember, friends, this didn’t happen in Iran. It happened in Egypt, a country that receives $1.5 billion of your hard-earned tax money each year. It happened under the leadership of Mohamed Morsi, who has been embraced by Barack Obama, and who has now claimed dictatorial powers.

The “good news” is that the seven Christians were tried in absentia because most of them now live in America, where they are free to speak and believe as they wish. This is why tens of thousands of Coptic Christians, perhaps as many as 100,000, have fled Egypt since the Arab Spring. But you will search in vain to find any significant statement or action by Barack Obama defending religious liberty in the so-called “Muslim world.”

By the way, Coptic Christians have greater roots in Egypt than the Islamists. The Apostle Mark brought Christianity to Egypt and was martyred in Alexandria. Egypt was a largely Christian nation for hundreds of years prior to the birth of Mohammed and the 7th century Arab invasion.

You Like Rubio/Pence

We had a great response to yesterday’s request for feedback. Thanks to everyone who responded and took the time to encourage me and our team. I appreciate that. I know how frustrating the world of politics can be, and the purpose of these reports is to educate and encourage others to get involved in the good fight for our values!

There was also a surprising amount of support for going off the fiscal cliff. Politico reported this morning that Speaker John Boehner urged House Republicans to hold their ground. Here’s an excerpt of his remarks:

“It’s important that everyone in this room continue to be clear with our constituents about what [our] position is. We’re fighting for spending cuts. We’re fighting against increases in tax rates that destroy jobs. And we’re fighting for pro-growth tax reform and entitlement reform, the keys to economic growth.”
As for 2016, some folks were understandably annoyed that we were already asking. But that’s politics! Among those of you who offered a preference, Florida Senator Marco Rubio was the clear favorite with Indiana’s Governor-elect Mike Pence finishing a strong second.

Obama Hits The Campaign Trail

The country is just 34 days away from the so-called “fiscal cliff.” If no agreement between tax-addicted Obama and congressional Republicans is reached by January 1, 2013, the Bush tax cuts automatically expire. According to the liberal Brookings Institution, “Nearly 90 percent of all households would face tax increases averaging nearly $3,500.” Some are rightly calling it “Taxmageddon.”

The Congressional Budget Office warned recently that failure to prevent the fiscal cliff would push the country back into recession and cause the unemployment rate to spike above 9%. Of course, every politician in Washington claims that they want to avoid this nightmare scenario.

Preventing the fiscal cliff is so important that Barack Obama is in Washington, D.C., working around the clock negotiating a deal with Republican leaders. Just kidding.

Actually, Obama’s back out on campaign trail delivering the same stump speech he has given for the past year. This week, he will visit a toy manufacturer in Pennsylvania to argue that Republicans are Grinches trying to ruin Christmas.

Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But it’s not far from the truth. Obama’s basic message is that tax rates must go up or he is prepared to go off the fiscal cliff. That will hurt the economy and, according to the left-wing media who will explain it to the American people, it will all be the GOP’s fault.

Do Democrats Even Want A Deal?

I warned in this report two weeks ago that a growing number of Democrats did not want a deal and were more than willing to go over the fiscal cliff. Now consider these excerpts from The Hill today:

“But sources close to the negotiations say [fiscal cliff] talks haven’t gone anywhere on any of the most salient issues. …It is also fanning Republican fears that the lack of urgency displayed by Obama is a deliberate strategy aimed at jamming the GOP into a last-minute agreement more favorable to Democrats. …A Democratic source close to the negotiations said that the White House ‘definitely’ sees running out the clock as to its advantage…”
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has warned that the “Thelma and Louise crowd” on the left is hijacking the fiscal cliff talks by refusing to compromise on spending. He’s right. Politico reported that the number two Senate Democrat, Richard Durbin of Illinois, gave a speech today essentially taking entitlement and spending reform off the table completely.

The problem is not a lack of tax revenue; it is too much big government spending. But raising taxes on the rich isn’t the solution. The rich are not rich enough and there are not enough of them to produce anywhere near the money needed.

The so-called Buffett Rule raises about $5 billion a year. Obama’s tax increases on those making $250,000 or more raises about $80 billion a year. That’s $85 billion when Obama is running record deficits of $1 trillion or $1,000 billion a year. A mere $915 billion shortfall.

As Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) noted, “If the president actually gets the tax increase that he really wants, that solves 8 percent of the projected deficit over the next 10 years. What in the world is the president’s plan for the other 92 percent?”

We’re doing everything we can to stiffen spines of friends on Capitol Hill and I promise we will continue to do that. But it is important to remember who our friends are.

John Boehner Isn’t The Enemy

I want to address one theme that is coming up a lot in your communications with me. I am receiving many emails that essentially boil down to this: “Mr. Bauer, opposition to raising taxes is the fundamental principle of the GOP. If Boehner caves on this, I’m done.”

My friends, John Boehner does not want to raise your taxes. But he is in the unfortunate position of having to either compromise with Obama and Harry Reid, who controls the Senate, or allow automatic tax increases on everybody.

Let’s assume that Speaker Boehner keeps all House Republicans in line and that they vote unanimously to reject Obama’s tax increases on those making $250,000. Then what? The Bush tax cuts will still expire automatically on January 1st. Everybody from the janitor to the billionaire will see his taxes go up.

Right now polls show that the American people would blame the GOP if their taxes go up next year. How does it help the conservative cause if every commentator in America is saying, “Hey, Mr. and Mrs. Middle Class, your taxes just went up because of John Boehner and the Republican Party”?

My point is simply this: We can’t govern the country from the House of Representatives alone. Two years ago, Barack Obama faced the prospect of reelection, so he blinked and temporarily renewed the Bush tax cuts.

But that leverage was lost on November 6th. Obama will never again face reelection. It is doubtful that Speaker John Boehner and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell can somehow neutralize the results of losing another election. In other words, brace yourself for higher taxes no matter what happens.

Reid To Ram Through Rules Change

Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid declared yesterday that he would follow through on his threat to change the Senate rules and limit the filibuster at the start of the new Congress next year. Reid is proposing to prevent the use of the filibuster on the introduction of legislation or “motions to proceed.”

Reid has abused his power as majority leader to block Republican amendments. In response, the GOP minority has resorted to filibustering even the introduction of bills in order to bargain for votes on amendments. Now Reid wants to take that bargaining chip away from them.

Moreover, Reid wants to change the rules by using the so-called “nuclear option.” Normally changing the Senate’s rules would require a two-thirds super-majority vote. Next year, Democrats will have only 55 votes. But since when have Democrats cared about the rules? To the left, the ends justify the means. Just as they did with Obamacare, the Democrats will do whatever is necessary to win.

In a speech on the Senate floor yesterday, Republican Leader Mitch McConnell blasted Reid’s rule change as a “naked power grab.” You can read more here.

Looking Ahead

I’m already looking ahead to 2014 and the potential opportunities to retake the Senate and expand our majority in the House. If we succeed, we’ve got a chance to cut the Obama nightmare short. But, believe it or not, some folks are already focused on 2016.

It will be an interesting race for sure. Democrats could see a primary contest between Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. In the past few days, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) said he was interested in running for the White House. Florida Senator Marco Rubio headlined a record-breaking fundraising event for the Iowa Republican Party.

Governor-elect Mike Pence of Indiana, whom I admire a lot, was a favorite choice at a recent meeting of conservative leaders and activists. Insiders in Florida have told me that former Governor Jeb Bush is interested. He is in Washington, D.C. this week and reportedly met with a number of top advisors and former staffers.

Since the maneuvering is already beginning, I’d like your feedback. I know it’s early, but who is your 2016 favorite?

Egypt’s New Pharaoh

Last week Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi was Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s best friend. He was a “hero” because he brokered a cease fire between Hamas and Israel in Gaza. We were told Obama talked to him six times on the phone in order to make it all happen. Hillary went to Egypt and made it clear that Morsi’s the man!

Whoops. Within hours of the over-the-top Obama/Clinton praise for the Muslim Brotherhood leader, Morsi seized dictatorial powers. Like a pharaoh of old, he issued a decree stating that any challenges to his decrees, laws and decisions were banned. Come to think of it, I understand why Obama and Morsi get along so well!

Demonstrators took to the streets of Egypt in protest, but there was silence in Washington. Obama said nothing about the power grab. Hillary’s State Department issued a weak statement lacking any moral outrage. It is now more and more clear that Egypt is becoming an Islamic state governed by Sharia law.

It doesn’t have to be that way, of course. The Obama Administration could announce that no more of your hard-earned tax money will go for Egypt’s economic and military programs. We could refuse to do any debt forgiveness for previous loans to Egypt. In short, we could “turn the screws” the same way Obama did on the pro-America Mubarak. But don’t hold your breath.

Obamacare: Killing Jobs, Cutting Wages

As the nation continues to digest the results of the 2012 elections, the stark reality of Obamacare is coming into sharp contrast with all the left-wing hype. The fears of conservative critics about job losses, bigger government and a weakened economy are being borne out, with many struggling families and hourly workers bearing the brunt.

Here’s one example: The Orlando Regional Medical Center has begun its “largest staff reduction in its nearly 100-year history,” according to the Orlando Sentinel. It is cutting hundreds of positions across “all departments and all eight of the system’s hospitals.”

The reason for the layoffs: Obamacare. According to ORMC’s CEO, Sherrie Sitarik, “Health-care reform mandates and changes in reimbursement structures for Medicare and Medicaid are forcing health-care organizations … to confront new challenges.”

ORMC is not alone. The Sentinel wrote that “Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina announced that it would cut 950 jobs by June. … Louisiana State University announced it would cut 1,495 positions as well as programs across its seven hospitals.”

Academia is now feeling the effects of Obamacare. Following the example of many large and small businesses, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Community College of Allegheny County is cutting hours for 400 adjunct professors and support staff “to circumvent the national health care legislation that goes into effect in January 2014.”

One adjunct biology professor said, “It’s kind of a double whammy for us because we are facing a legal requirement [under the new law] to get health care and if the college is reducing our hours, we don’t have the money to pay for it.” Welcome to Obama’s “brave new world,” professor!

There’s a lot of irony here given how so many left-wing academics overwhelmingly supported Obama.

Implementing Obamacare is proving to be a nightmare. So far at least 16 states are refusing to set up insurance exchanges, instead leaving the task to Washington bureaucrats. According to The Hill this is creating “major logistical and financial challenges” for the Obama Administration.

And here’s another headache for the administration: Today the Supreme Court reopened a case by Liberty University against Obamacare’s contraception mandate. Read more here.

Democrats Gearing Up For 2014

In the days since November 6th, I’ve heard from many good folks who said they are taking a break from politics or giving up altogether. While I share their frustration with the outcome of this year’s elections, I know the left isn’t taking a break.

The left didn’t give up after it lost in 2000, 2004 or 2010. And even after winning just three weeks ago, Obama’s liberal allies are not taking a break. In fact, they are already plotting their strategy for 2014!

Consider this excerpt from a Politico report today:

“Shortly after Election Day, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer and top White House aides spoke at a three-day secret meeting of major Democratic donors and officials from liberal outside groups gearing up for 2014…
“Some of those groups or their allies are considering expanding into state politics, policy fights or even primaries on both sides. And they have already gone back to their 2012 donors to ask for more cash while the euphoria from winning is still fresh.”

I am optimistic about our chances in two years. But the left isn’t waiting a year or more to start planning. It is planning now, and so are we.

Be Discerning

In recent days, I have gotten an unusual number of emails asking about various ideas and solicitations from groups all purportedly aimed at removing Obama from office. My friends, there is no quick fix that can replace the hard work of winning elections.

Barack Obama will not be impeached. Harry Reid and Obama’s Democrat allies control the Senate. And it is unimaginable that anyone could prevent the Electoral College from meeting next month and performing its constitutional duties.

I deeply appreciate the support we receive from friends all over the country. But I urge you to be very cautious about donating to unknown groups promoting outlandish ideas. There is no substitute for hard work, common sense and well-earned reputations.

There are many good, established conservative organizations doing excellent work. If you don’t support us, please support one of them. Don’t be taken in by essentially “fly-by-night” operations hoping to exploit your conservative values for their own profit.

Whom Do You Thank?

For the fourth year in a row, Barack Obama failed to mention God in his Thanksgiving statement. This probably contributed to the confusion of comedian Jamie Foxx who said at the Soul Train awards, “First of all, give an honor to God and our lord and savior Barack Obama. Barack Obama.” No he wasn’t kidding.

The Left’s War On Israel

The liberal media’s coverage of the conflict in Israel continues to be incredibly biased. It emphasizes civilian casualties in Gaza while seldom mentioning that the casualties are happening because Hamas and Islamic Jihad are exploiting media prejudices and Western sensibilities to make Israel look like the aggressor.

I am going to repeat again what I wrote last week about war crimes, because it is important to know the truth when you are confronted at school, work or even church. When someone says to you, “I know you are pro-Israel, but how can you support Israel when it is bombing Palestinian children,” the answer is that Hamas and Islamic Jihad, not Israel, are the ones committing war crimes.

Israel’s enemies are intentionally placing missile batteries near civilian areas — schools, hospitals, soccer fields and mosques. Under international law, using civilians as human shields is a war crime. Under international law, the country attacked (Israel) is permitted to retaliate against such targets even if it results in civilian casualties.

The depth of the political left’s hostility to Israel is breathtaking. A CNN poll released yesterday found Americans overwhelmingly support what Israel is doing. Nearly three-quarters of Republicans and 59% of independents backed the Jewish state. But only 40% of Democrats approved. That’s not surprising given the outrage of so many Democrat activists when an effort was made to restore God and Jerusalem to the party’s platform.

Last weekend, an MSNBC interviewer asked Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, “What would you say to those who argue that the (Hamas) rockets are essentially very ineffective, they rarely do damage and that the response from Israelis is disproportional to the threat they’re under?”

I know Ambassador Oren personally. He is a good and decent man. I can only imagine how often he was counting to ten before he responded. He pointed out that over half of all Israelis have to drop everything they are doing and run to a bomb shelter day after day. No other nation would tolerate that.

Not every criticism of Israel is the result of anti-Semitism. But when the only Jewish nation in the world is held to a completely different standard of conduct than any other nation in the world, that suggests anti-Semitism.

Clapper Clipped Rice’s Talking Points

CBS News is reporting that the disputed talking points used by U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, which omitted Al Qaeda’s role in the Benghazi attack, were edited by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. We don’t know yet who in the DNI’s office made the edits, but they were reportedly approved by James Clapper, the director of National Intelligence.

Clapper is a top Obama appointee with a history of intelligence lapses. In 2010, he was caught completely unaware about a major terror plot in London. During congressional testimony last year, Clapper stated that the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt was a secular organization! Clapper is clueless!

Four Californians Charged In Terror Plot

The FBI announced the arrests of four California residents yesterday. All have been charged with plotting to join Al Qaeda and the Taliban. They wanted to wage jihad by killing American troops and bombing government buildings.

Sohiel Omar Kabir, 34, is a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Afghanistan who served one year in the U.S. Air Force. It’s not clear why he only served from 2000 to 2001. Ralph Deleon, 23, is a permanent U.S. resident born in the Philippines. Deleon wanted to drive a “big” suicide truck bomb that could “take out a whole base.”

Miguel Alejandro Santana, 21, is a permanent resident born in Mexico, and has applied for U.S. citizenship. According to the Associated Press, Santana told an FBI agent that “he had been around gangs and had no problem taking a life.” Arifeen David Gojali, 21, is an American citizen who was radicalized by internet videos.

Media Already Ripping Rubio

The 2012 campaign ended just two weeks ago. But the 2016 speculation is well under way. And right away the left-wing media started fulfilling its role, ripping into one of the GOP’s rising stars in order to make him unacceptable to more highly educated, suburban voters.

The strategy used is to attack conservative candidates by exploiting issues related to their faith. The favorite approach in recent years has been to ask candidates about evolution. Sometimes it is global warming. If the candidate hedges in any way, he or she is presented as an anti-science buffoon who would be totally unacceptable as president.

Every credible conservative will be subject to this absurd scrutiny in the days ahead. This week it was Marco Rubio’s turn.

Rubio is being talked about as a potential presidential candidate. He is an articulate conservative, Hispanic and from a key swing state. And he got a great reception in Iowa last week.

So, of course, the fashion magazine GQ just had to ask the Florida senator the question that every American (not) asks every day: “How old do you think the Earth is?”

Here’s how Marco Rubio responded:

“I’m not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that’s a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States. I think the age of the universe has zero to do with how our economy is going to grow. … I think parents should be able to teach their kids what their faith says, what science says. Whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to answer that. It’s one of the great mysteries.”
That is a perfectly reasonable answer. But I guarantee you it is already in the Democrats’ opposition research files for 2016 and will be used with every swing suburban voter to demonstrate that Rubio is “anti-science.”

Two can play this game. We don’t have a lot of conservative media outlets. But we have some, with Fox News being the most notable example.

Every liberal who agrees to an interview on Fox or any other right-leaning media outlet, no matter the subject, should be asked whether they think life begins at conception. If they hedge at all, the interviewer should remind them that biological science is clear — life begins at conception.

And liberals will hedge on the question. Remember Obama’s “above my pay grade” response to Pastor Rick Warren? If they admit an embryo is life, their pro-abortion policy will be exposed for what it is — the taking of innocent life.

Obama Trying To Restrain Israel

Barack Obama’s public statements recognizing Israel’s right to self-defense sound reassuring. But privately, according to several news outlets including the “wired-in” Politico, Obama is leaning on Israel trying to deter it from entering the Gaza jihadist sewer to finish the job with ground troops. Obama is reportedly worried that if the fighting escalates, his “two-state solution” will be pushed off into the future.

Two-state solution? Is he serious? The withdrawal of all Israelis from Gaza in 2005 was followed by the militarization of the whole territory by Hamas and Hezbollah. Month after month it is used as a launching pad for rocket attacks on Israeli civilian areas — attacks that are completely ignored by the U.S. media.

The missiles are being supplied by Iran. Al Qaeda is operating on the ground too. Gaza is living proof of why more Israeli land concessions will not bring peace.

Meanwhile, the on-going war against Israel continues on every level. Iran is stepping up its nuclear weapons program. Israeli computer systems are under mass hacking attacks.

Usually there are a few hundred attempts each day to compromise or render useless key Israeli defense systems. But since last Wednesday when the latest conflict started, there have been 44 million (no, that is not a typo) hacking attempts from around the world. Only one was successful and the Israelis were able to recover in 10 minutes.

If you want to stand with Israel in its time of need, go to the Christians United for Israel website at cufi.org, where you will find several action items you can take. I am proud to be one of CUFI’s founders and I strongly support Pastor John Hagee’s work.

What’s Next For Obamacare?

Barack Obama’s reelection means that Obamacare is likely to survive in some form for the next four years. But the American people still don’t like it. Even though they voted to reelect Obama, exit polls discovered that only 44% of Americans fully support Obamacare, while 49% want parts of it or all of it repealed.

The dilemma for the Democrats is that the next phase of the law’s implementation rests largely with the nation’s 30 Republican governors. As The Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes notes, “Governors can’t repeal Obamacare. But they can confound the Obama administration’s plan for implementing it fully in 2014. If governors do so, they may force the president to negotiate on scaling back the program.”

A number of Republican governors are refusing to set up the so-called “state exchanges.” If the governors refuse to set up the exchanges, the federal government can step in. But there are major problems.

There are serious questions as to whether the federal government is even capable of setting up and administering dozens of state programs. In addition, the law stipulates that only the state-run exchanges are eligible for Obamacare’s taxpayer-funded subsidies.

Theoretically, if every Republican governor refused to set up an exchange in his or her state, then the residents of just 20 states would be eligible for the federal money. Click here to read more.

Bishops Battle On

In addition to facing administrative challenges at the state level, Obamacare continues to face a number of legal challenges in the courts. Christian publisher Tyndale House won an injunction Friday against Obamacare’s contraception mandate.

In his decision, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton wrote, “The contraceptive coverage mandate affirmatively compels [Tyndale House] to violate their religious beliefs in order to comply with the law.”

Largely ignored by the “mainstream media,” the nation’s Catholic leaders last week reaffirmed their opposition to the contraception mandate and vowed to continue the battle for religious liberty in spite of the election results. At a meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, said:

“The only thing we’re certainly not prepared to do is give in. We’re not violating our consciences. I would say no door is closed except for the door to capitulation.”

No Mandate For Liberalism

In the two weeks since the election, pundits and politicians have been debating whether Barack Obama has been given a mandate to advance his party’s agenda. Post-election analysis shows that Obama and his allies do not have a mandate to expand government or pursue a more liberal agenda. You can read more in my weekly column at HumanEvents.com.

Petraeus Testifies

Former CIA Director General David Petraeus testified behind closed doors on Capitol Hill this morning about the 9/11 attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Gen. Petraeus told members of the intelligence committees that he “knew almost immediately” that the attack on the consulate was carried out by Ansar al Sharia, an Al Qaeda group in Libya.

Emerging from the hearing, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Peter King (R-NY) told reporters that Gen. Petraeus was asked about the talking points used by U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice. As you may recall, Rice said repeatedly on national television that the attack was a spontaneous demonstration in response to an anti-Islamic film.

Gen. Petraeus told the committee that the original CIA talking points were “much more specific about al-Qaeda involvement.” But they were edited during an “inter-agency process,” and no one knows where in the process that “much more specific” information got cut.

Unfortunately, as Rep. King indicated, General Petraeus’ testimony this morning contradicts what he told the committee in September when he essentially toed the White House line. It also raises questions about who cut information about Al Qaeda’s involvement and why.

On MSNBC this morning, Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), vice chairman for the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, “Susan Rice was sent to give a White House message. It was not an intelligence community message, and there’s a very clear distinction in that.” Every American should demand to know why the White House was not in sync with the intelligence community.

Jerusalem Targeted

Palestinian militants fired rockets toward Jerusalem today. Fortunately, they landed in open fields outside the Holy City and no one was hurt. A Hamas spokesman said, “We are sending a short and simple message: There is no security for any Zionist on any single inch of Palestine and we plan more surprises.”

Israel has already called up 16,000 reservists, and IDF tanks are massing on the Gaza border in preparation for a possible ground assault. After today’s attack on Jerusalem, Reuters reported that as many as 75,000 reservists may be called up.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian prime minister, our supposed ally and product of the Arab Spring, has rushed to Gaza to show Egypt’s solidarity with the Palestinians.

Egypt has a peace treaty with Israel. Egypt receives $1.5 billion dollars in aid from the U.S. each year. It is time to demand more from our “allies” in Cairo. If President Obama is serious, he should get Mohamed Morsi on the phone and tell him to stop standing with the terrorists or go find his $1.5 billion somewhere else!

As this crisis continues, we will no doubt hear more about alleged Israeli “war crimes.” So let’s talk about real war crimes.

As David French correctly notes, “Every Hamas rocket attack is a war crime.” Why? Because they are aimed at civilian targets with the intention of terrorizing the Israeli people. These rocket attacks are terrorist attacks.

Moreover, Hamas has intentionally positioned its rocket launchers in civilian areas, near mosques, schools and hospitals, thereby turning innocent Palestinians into human shields. Under international law, placing such weapons in civilian areas constitutes a war crime, and it is not a war crime for Israel to take them out.

Obama Continues The Campaign

For most Americans the 2012 campaign ended on November 6th. But the left isn’t stopping. Today’s Washington Post reports that “President Obama’s reelection machinery” is being kept in place and will be used in an on-going “campaign to pressure Republican lawmakers.” At least 100 Obama campaign operatives have been retained for this massive effort.

According to the Post, these “former campaign organizers” will “orchestrate protests in front of lawmakers’ offices and set up phone banks to call constituents.” For all the talk about compromise, this is just more Chicago-style hardball politics!

The negotiations over the so-called “fiscal cliff” haven’t even begun yet, and Democrat demands are increasing by the day. For example:

  • Obama has doubled his demand from $800 billion in new tax hikes to $1.6 trillion.
  • At least 13 Senate Democrats are resisting cuts to entitlement programs and demanding that any deficit reduction plan be based on a 1-to-1 ratio of tax increases to spending cuts. Keep in mind that Obama has run $1 trillion deficits each and every year of his administration. Spending, not revenue, is clearly the problem!
  • And to top it all off, other Senate liberals are demanding another stimulus package! Yes, that’s right — their solution to our spending and debt crisis is even more spending and more debt!

All of this is increasing the suspicion among conservatives that Obama and his Democrat allies really don’t want a deal at all. In fact, they may even want the country to go off the fiscal cliff.

Here’s the partisan logic: If Democrats can force enough weak-kneed Republicans to buckle and accept a bad deal, Democrats win and the GOP hurts its brand again.

Or they just keep upping the ante so much that even the weak-kneed Republicans can’t go for it. If nothing happens, the Bush tax cuts automatically expire on January 1st and Obama still gets his tax hikes. But he also gets the added benefit of bashing Republicans for the fiscal chaos that ensues. Some liberals believe it’s a win-win for Obama.

I have spent the last few days in private meetings with conservative leaders and our allies in Congress. I have not found anyone who is confident we can finesse this issue. All most Americans will hear is Obama’s spin amplified by the left-wing media.

Union Bankrupts Twinkies

Here’s a good indication of the mood on the left and its unwillingness to compromise.

Hostess Brands, makers of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, is shutting down and laying off 18,000 workers at its 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers. Hostess is going out of business because the bakers’ union refused to accept a new contract, ignored repeated warnings that the company risked bankruptcy and went on strike.

No doubt Michelle Obama and Michael Bloomberg are doing a victory dance. First they tell us that men can “marry” other men. Now they are telling us that we must do without Twinkies!

Joking aside, the president of the Service Employees International Union said a few years ago, “‘Workers of the world unite,’ it’s not just a slogan anymore.” Presumably he knows that slogan comes from Karl Marx’s “Communist Manifesto.” But I wonder just how much unity the workers of Hostess Brands are feeling today.
