Politicizing Sandy

Remember Rahm Emanuel’s famous quote early in the Obama administration, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste”? “Hurricane” Obama and his allies are hoping that Hurricane Sandy will blow away a surging Romney campaign too.

The New York Times this week ran an editorial that unapologetically used the destruction caused by Sandy to make the case for big government. The liberal media and Democrat operatives are playing politics by suggesting that Mitt Romney wants to gut FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. That is a lie.

Governor Romney has argued that governors and mayors, not Washington bureaucrats, best know the needs of their states and communities. The only decision a president makes is whether a state should be declared a disaster area. Most presidents are very liberal in the use of that designation.

In recent days, the White House political machine has worked overtime to show Obama was in charge. The White House said that President Obama was repeatedly awakened throughout the night so he could be briefed on Hurricane Sandy. Why? There were no decisions for him to make. But the president’s handlers wanted to paint the picture of “Obama in charge” just days before the election. The administration even released a photo of President Obama presiding over a disaster relief briefing from the White House Situation Room. (Where’s the photo for Benghazi?)

And when Obama made his first statements about the disaster, he used the phrase “lean forward.” Where have I heard that before? It’s Obama’s campaign slogan, which he borrowed from MSNBC!

Obama also said that he had instructed federal agencies to “to cut through red tape, cut through bureaucracy. There is no excuse for inaction at this point.” That he felt it necessary to make such a statement only proves Governor Romney’s point about sending the money and authority back to the states.

But here was the most jarring of Obama’s remarks yesterday at the Red Cross:

“This is a tough time for a lot of people — millions of folks all across the Eastern Seaboard.  But America is tougher, and we’re tougher because we pull together.  We leave nobody behind.  We make sure that we respond as a nation and remind ourselves that whenever an American is in need, all of us stand together to make sure that we’re providing the help that’s necessary.”
In the Benghazi crisis, only Obama, as the commander-in-chief, could have authorized the military force necessary to save and rescue our ambassador and the other personnel who were under attack for hours. He did not. In spite of Obama’s boasts, he decided to leave behind Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods to the jihadists who murdered them.

Benghazi-gate Continues

On “Face The Nation” Sunday, Senator John McCain unleashed a broadside against the Obama White House over its handling of the Benghazi attacks. He referred to Obama’s response to the attack as “the worst cover-up or incompetence that I have ever observed in my life.”

Last night on Fox News, former Speaker Newt Gingrich suggested that the liberal media may be protecting Obama. Here’s what he said:
“There is a rumor — I want to be clear, it’s a rumor — that at least two networks have emails from the National Security Adviser’s office telling a counterterrorism group to stand down. But they were [in] a group in real-time trying to mobilize Marines and C-130s and the fighter aircraft, and they were told explicitly by the White House stand down and do nothing. ‘This is not a terrorist action.’ If that is true, and I’ve been told this by a fairly reliable U.S. senator, if that is true and comes out, I think it raises enormous questions about the president’s role, and Tom Donilon, the National Security Adviser’s role, the Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta…”
Gingrich’s rumor would confirm a Fox report from last week that officials at a CIA annex in Benghazi had requested military support multiple times during the attack on the consulate. Each time their requests were denied. Stay tuned.

Sinking To New Lows

I devoted my recent Human Events column to the antics of our profane president and his supporters. I chose the topic too early. Michael Moore and the radicals at MoveOn.org have hit a new low.

The left is just wallowing in the coarseness of our culture. It is jarring enough when young children utter expletives, but now some liberals think we really want to hear it coming from our grandmothers or great grandmothers. Click here to watch this disgusting ad. [WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE] Make sure your children are not in the room.

One of the elderly women in the ad refers to voter ID laws as a form of “voter suppression.” That is just another indication of how out-of-touch the left is with America. A recent poll by the liberal Washington Post found that nearly 75% of Americans support voter ID laws!

Suspend The Election?

Even though much of the East Coast is shutting down as Hurricane Sandy approaches, we are monitoring left-wing media and websites. I don’t think this is serious, but I want to clue you in on an idea that has the left buzzing today.

No one in the federal government has suggested this yet, but some liberal commentators are raising the prospect that the damage from Hurricane Sandy could be so widespread in the Northeast that the election should be suspended.

There was a notable exchange this morning on CNBC between Andrew Ross Sorkin and New York Times columnist John Harwood. Sorkin asked Harwood if there was any precedent for suspending an election. Harwood responded that he wasn’t aware of any for the presidential election. But primary elections in New York City were cancelled on the morning of September 11, 2001.

Again, I don’t want to be alarmist. It’s not clear to me who would benefit or who would be hurt by any delay. Obama’s early vote in certain states has been strong. So much so that liberal commentators are suggesting it will make up any advantage Romney has on Election Day. From Obama’s perspective, that argues for holding the election sooner rather than later.

The Romney/Ryan ticket certainly has momentum right now. Benghazi was starting to get the attention of more and more voters. Sandy may have stopped that.

I can’t imagine a delay in the election. Any attempt to stall the voting would be fought in the courts and quickly rise to the Supreme Court.

But even with this major storm, we continue to be on the job. Our prayers are with those in the path of Hurricane Sandy, as well as the first responders in the affected states.

For those of you not affected by this storm, I hope you will help us make the most of our matching gift opportunity so we can defeat Barack Obama, elect a conservative majority to the Senate and take America back!

Stand With Israel

Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) is one of the best friends pro-family, pro-life conservatives have on Capitol Hill. I have known Trent Franks for many years, long before he was elected to Congress.

He is also strongly pro-Israel, and has produced an outstanding video that highlights the importance of this election for America and for Israel.

Please take a few moments to watch his video. Be certain to share it with your pastor and with your friends and family members too.

Help Denied DURING Benghazi Attack!

Fox News broke an extremely disturbing report this morning. If the facts are accurate, this could be Barack Obama’s “Desert One debacle” — Jimmy Carter’s failed attempt to rescue the Iranian hostages.

According to the report, officials at a CIA annex in Benghazi requested military support multiple times during the attack on the consulate. Each time they were turned down. When they requested permission to assist the consulate staff, they were told to stand down.

Frustrated by the lack of response, former Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, along with two other individuals, ignored the order to stand down and went anyway. They found Sean Smith but could not find Ambassador Stevens. They returned to the CIA annex, but it too came under attack. Again they requested military support, and it was inexplicably denied. Consider this excerpt of the Fox report:

“Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty … were killed by a mortar shell at 4 a.m. Libyan time, nearly seven hours after the attack on the Consulate began — a window that represented more than enough time for the U.S. military to send back-up from nearby bases in Europe, according to sources familiar with Special Operations.”
For seven hours our men were under attack and got no help from Washington! We already knew that the embassy staff had repeatedly requested more security months prior to this attack. They were repeatedly denied. Now we are learning that CIA operatives on the ground repeatedly asked for reinforcements during the attack and they were denied!

This should be a huge story! Will the other networks pick up on it? I’m skeptical because of the potential damage it could do to Obama’s reelection chances. But if this story gets legs, the White House will no doubt blame it on the CIA. Don’t fall for it.

After four years, any administration has had sufficient time to establish its control over every agency in Washington. Most of the bureaucrats are sympathetic to Obama anyway. But after four years of bowing to radical Islam, even those who are professional civil servants know what decisions could end their careers.

Obama’s Disgusting New Ad

It is hard to imagine the Obama campaign stooping any lower after yesterday’s outrageous insults toward Billy Graham and values voters. But somehow they managed it.

In a new ad, a young “hip” woman compares voting for Barack Obama to losing her virginity. So the president now wants to seduce young women by asking them to ‘do it’ — vote– for the first time with him.

I hope parents will talk to their daughters and tell them about the sweet-talking men who promise girls the world in order to have their way with them, only to abandon them the next morning, when the girls realize that the empty promises were just part of the seduction.

In my view, this ad and the renewed focus on abortion reflect the growing desperation in the Obama campaign. They are trying — too hard — to energize young female voters who just aren’t that into Obama anymore.

Don’t Mess With Texas!

U.N. observers are coming to the United States to make sure our elections are fair. Seriously? With all the problems in the rest of the world, the U.N. is sending observers here? The “blue helmets” may get a warm welcome in San Francisco, but Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is warning they could be arrested.

Yesterday, Abbott sent a letter to Hillary Clinton telling her that nothing in the Texas election laws permits U.N. “representatives to enter the polling place and nothing in a document that may govern” their conduct “has any impact … on the conduct of elections in the State of Texas.” The U.N. monitors have reportedly met with activist groups opposed to voter ID laws.

When the group went whining to Hillary that threats of arrest were “unacceptable,” Abbott tweeted, “Bring it!”

God bless Texas!

The Electoral College

I have received a number of questions lately about why some states are seemingly more important than others in winning the White House. The answer is the Electoral College.

In a time when there is so much focus on popularity, the Electoral College seems out-of-date to many. But the Founding Fathers had very legitimate reasons for creating the Electoral College.

In cobbling together the new nation from very diverse states, one issue that frequently arose was the concern that the large states would dominate the new country. So compromises were reached.

One of which was a Congress with two houses — one house with representation based on population (the House of Representatives) and another house where each state had equal representation (the Senate).

Another compromise involved the election of the president, and it borrowed heavily from the concepts that led to the creation of Congress.

The Electoral College was also designed to prevent large states from dominating the election. Each state is awarded votes in the Electoral College based on its total representation in Congress — the number of House members plus its two senators.

So California with 53 House members plus two senators has 55 votes in the Electoral College. Delaware with one at-large representative and two senators has three votes. It takes 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the presidency.

The Race To 270

In the race for 270, Barack Obama has the advantage. He starts out with a solid base of Blue states like California and New York, which gives him 201 Electoral votes. Governor Romney’s Red state base has 191 Electoral votes.

There are approximately 10 “purple,” or swing, states with 130 Electoral College votes that will decide the election: Colorado (9), Florida (29), Iowa (6), New Hampshire (4), Nevada (6), North Carolina (15), Ohio (18), Pennsylvania (20), Virginia (13) and Wisconsin (10).

The most likely scenario for Governor Romney to win involves carrying Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and Ohio, plus one more state. The first three states are leaning in his direction, while Ohio is a toss-up. Thus all the focus on Ohio.

If he loses Ohio, he must flip another state like Pennsylvania, where I am today rallying values voters. And he must still carry an additional state, most likely Colorado. By the way, today’s Time poll finding Obama up five points in Ohio is garbage.

Why You Must Vote

There is one last point I want to emphasize: You must vote! Just because you live in a liberal Blue state like California and New York does not mean your vote doesn’t matter.

While the Electoral College results usually mirror the popular vote, on rare occasions a candidate can lose the popular vote and still win the right combination of states to reach 270 Electoral College votes. This last occurred in 2000 when George W. Bush defeated Al Gore despite losing the popular vote.

There is growing speculation that Barack Obama could lose the popular vote this year, but still eke out a win in the Electoral College. If that happens, it will be impossible for him to claim a mandate for his left-wing agenda, having just lost the popular vote. That’s why every conservative must vote no matter where they live.

But more importantly, if there is a strong conservative turnout, it is far more likely that Mitt Romney will prevail in the key swing states, and we will end the Obama nightmare on November 6th!

Whom Do You Trust?

Barack Obama’s latest pitch to voters is trust. Seriously. Here’s what he told a crowd in Ohio yesterday:

“There’s no more serious issue in a presidential campaign than trust. Trust matters. You want to know that the person who’s applying to be your president and commander in chief is trustworthy, that he means what he says, that he’s not just making stuff up depending on whether it’s convenient or not.”
I don’t have enough space in this report to list all the ways Obama has misled the American people. But how about Obama’s deception on marriage? How about Obama’s repeated lies about Obamacare? And can you really trust this commander-in-chief when it comes to Benghazi?

Democrat Voter Fraud

Whenever Republicans push ideas like voter ID laws to make our elections more secure, Democrats almost always respond by saying that voter fraud is a myth and conservatives are just trying to suppress minority turnout. How quickly (and conveniently) they forget the ACORN scandal.

Last month a Democrat House candidate in Maryland dropped out after it was learned that she was also registered to vote in Florida and had voted twice in 2006 and 2008.

Yesterday news broke that Patrick Moran, the son of a Democrat Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA), was busted in an undercover sting operation by Project Veritas. Moran was caught on tape explaining how utility bills could be easily forged in order to cast 100 fraudulent ballots.

Yes, voter fraud is real and the Democrats are the ones doing it!

But, again, this only reinforces why it is so important that every conservative votes. Cheating only works in close elections. That’s why we need every conservative to vote so that we win in a landslide!

Two Hours

Benghazi-gate did not come up in Monday night’s debate, but the issue isn’t going away. News broke last night that the State Department sent three emails to the White House and other government agencies on the afternoon of 9/11 informing them of the attack on the Benghazi consulate.

The first message, reporting the attack, was sent at 4:05 PM. The second message, sent at 4:54, reported that the firing had stopped. The third message, sent at 6:07, reported that an Al Qaeda linked group, Ansar al-Sharia, was claiming responsibility.

So within two hours of the initial report, the White House knew the Benghazi attack was a terrorist attack, not a spontaneous mob protesting over an Internet movie. Yet for two weeks that lie was spread repeatedly by Barack Obama and his top officials. If Barack Obama were a Republican president, the media and its left-wing allies would be chanting, “People died and Obama lied!”

Business Leaders To Voters: Think Carefully

More than two dozen highly respected, very successful business leaders recently signed an open letter in USA Today urging the American people to “think carefully about what kind of country we are creating for ourselves and coming generations” before they vote.

The list of signatories includes entrepreneurs like Jack Welch, Roger Hertog, Mel Karmazin and Ken Langone. The letter blasts Obama’s class warfare as a distraction from his “own policy failures.” You can read more here.

We also got another warning about Obama’s policy failures and the grim future ahead if Obama is reelected and conservatives fail to retake the Senate. Yesterday Autozone released its annual report, which stated very clearly that Obamacare “could have a significant, negative impact on our business.”

Autozone and other companies won’t just “eat” this loss. There will be higher prices for consumers and more Americans unemployed and working fewer hours. Darden Restaurants (owner of Red Lobster and Olive Garden) is already cutting back staff, and now it is reducing the number of hours part-time employees can work because of Obamacare.

Eastwood’s Back!

Remember how media and political elites were so convinced that Clint Eastwood’s speech at the Republican National Convention was an utter disaster and embarrassment? Their reaction is a perfect example of just how out-of-touch the left-wing echo chamber is with the rest of America. And it’s a good reminder of why we should ignore them.

As it turns out, Eastwood was a hit with Middle America. So much so that American Crossroads has produced a new ad featuring Clint Eastwood telling voters “our country just couldn’t survive” four more years of Barack Obama. The ad was wildly popular with focus groups and will run in the key battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Virginia. Watch it here.

Obama’s Surprise

The Washington rumor mill is rife with buzz about an anti-Romney “October surprise” coming out from the Obama campaign. There are reports of irregularities with voting machines in North Carolina. Republican voters in central Florida have reportedly received letters telling them they are not registered and should not try to vote on Election Day.

In the days ahead, we will report more on what we are hearing, including some possible October surprise scenarios you should be looking for.

Today Donald Trump made his big announcement: If Barack Obama will release his college records and passport applications, Trump will donate $5 million to any charity Obama chooses.

If I were Barack Obama, I would do it. He could silence, if not embarrass, Donald Trump and put Trump’s money to good use for needy inner-city children, perhaps the many victims of Chicago’s gang violence. Assuming, of course, Obama has nothing to hide.

Tune In Tonight

The third and final presidential debate will take place tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET. This debate, hosted by Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, will focus on foreign policy and will be moderated by CBS’s Bob Schieffer.

We can expect to hear a lot tonight about China and Benghazi. We should hear a lot about radical Islam too. Even though the debate is on foreign policy, Governor Romney should as often as possible make the connection between our military strength and our economic strength. Without a strong economy, we cannot maintain a strong military.

When Obama pursues policies that cause the economy to stagnate, he is not only crushing the dreams of millions of Americans, but he is putting our families at greater risk. The Pentagon has become a top target for massive cuts driven by Obama’s trillion-dollar deficits. The deficit is a serious threat to national security.

Mitt Has Momentum

The latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll has Mitt Romney and Barack Obama tied at 47% among likely voters. That is a significant development. The NBC/Journal poll has consistently shown Obama leading and often by fairly large margins. A month ago, he was down five points.

Consider too the Gallup poll. At the beginning of October, Gallup reported that the race was tied, with Romney and Obama each earning 48%. Democrats complained that Gallup’s sampling method undercounted minorities and Democrat voters, and David Alexrod threatened the respected polling firm. So Gallup tweaked its sampling to accommodate complaints from the left. Guess what? Romney is now leading 52% to 45% among likely voters!

Clearly, there has been movement in Governor Romney’s direction. But the race is far from over.

People in the Romney campaign say they have the “Big Mo” and that there are states in play now that were not before. Insiders in the Obama campaign counter that little has changed. They can lose Florida, North Carolina and Virginia. Their strategy is to hold on to Ohio and Wisconsin at all costs, plus win either Iowa or Nevada. If they do that and there are no other surprises on Election Night, Obama still prevails.

The bottom line: This is still anybody’s race. It looks a lot better than it did two weeks ago, but there are still two weeks left.

October Surprise?

The New York Times reported this weekend that U.S. and Iranian officials had agreed “for the first time to one-on-one negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.” Is this the October surprise we have heard so much about lately? I don’t think so, but you can see how it would play to Obama’s favor right before a debate on foreign policy. But there are several points that must be addressed.

There has been a lot of inaccurate reporting surrounding this story. Negotiations have been going on with Iran ever since the 1979 revolution. This is not a breakthrough. And the idea that this would be an argument in favor of keeping Obama is ludicrous.

Should the U.S. decide it is worth listening to the Iranians stall again, which is exactly what they do every time there are “talks,” who do you want at the table? The guy who has spent four years bowing to radical Islam, or a guy who believes America is Western Civilization’s last, best hope?

Moreover, there are reports from Iranian government officials that Obama sent a message to the Islamic regime through the Swiss ambassador conceding “Iran’s nuclear rights.” Just another reason you don’t want Obama negotiating with our enemies!

If there is some kind of anti-Romney effort, it’s more likely to involve Gloria Allred, who famously shows up at news conferences to sabotage Republicans. Breitbart.com reports that Allred may be working on an “October surprise” that proves Mitt Romney is — horror of horrors! — pro-life. If that’s true, it shows just how desperate the Obama campaign is that it is still trying to use abortion as a wedge issue to keep the gender gap alive.

CIA Says Administration Knew In 24 Hours

The intelligence community is pushing back against efforts by the Obama Administration to blame it for the Benghazi fiasco. As you may recall, top officials from the president down repeatedly blamed the attack on a mob outraged by a movie. When that story fell apart, they threw the intelligence community under the bus.

But today the Associated Press confirms previous reports that the Obama Administration knew better. Consider this excerpt: “The CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of last month’s deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate that there was evidence it was carried out by militants, not a spontaneous mob…”

The article goes on to note that congressional aides are preparing a timeline that contrasts what the intelligence community knew with what the administration was telling the public.

It would be stunning if Benghazi weren’t a major part of Monday night’s foreign policy debate. Governor Romney had better be prepared to knock this one out of the park or bring it up himself if moderator Bob Schieffer ignores it.

Krauthammer’s Advice

Barack Obama did his best to shut down the debate on Benghazi when he deployed that faux outrage that Democrats use so well against conservatives. When pressed on his misleading statements, Obama said it was “offensive” that anyone would question his administration.

Charles Krauthammer has a great column today on this very subject. Here is Krauthammer’s suggested response:

“You are offended by this accusation, Mr. President? The country is offended that your press secretary, your U.N. ambassador and you yourself have repeatedly misled the nation about the origin and nature of the Benghazi attack.”
Krauthammer is right, and I hope Romney is ready. The Democrat base loved Joe Biden’s over-the-top antics and it loved Obama’s bullying performance Tuesday evening. Intimidating political opponents comes naturally to liberals, including Obama. That’s the subject of an op-ed I wrote in this week’s Washington Times, which you can read here.

“Not Optimal”

Barack Obama is taking some heat today for his appearance on Jon Stewart’s comedy show last night. Referring to the deaths of our ambassador and three other Americans, Obama said, “When four Americans get killed, it’s not optimal.”

Not optimal? That was an incredible, if not callous, understatement for a man who has advanced so far on his rhetorical skills. But he also once referred to the Benghazi deaths as “bumps in the road.”

During his interview with Stewart, Obama made another statement that is even more relevant to our security. He said, “I still want to close Guantanamo. We haven’t been able to get that through Congress.”

Thank God for the Republican House!

Closing Guantanamo Bay leaves only two options: Either you release all the prisoners there, in which case virtually all of them will return to the battlefield. Or you put them in prisons here in the United States and in doing so turn those communities into potential jihadist targets. Most Americans rightly oppose that radical idea, but Obama appears committed to doing it if he gets a second term.

On A Lighter Note

Here are some lighter items to close out the week. First some good news.

  • Gallaudet University officials are in full retreat this week and have offered to reinstate Dr. Angela McCaskill. We reported Friday that the university had suspended Dr. McCaskill after it was learned she had signed a petition at her church in support of normal marriage. Dr. McCaskill, a black woman, said she was “shocked, hurt, insulted” and “humiliated” by the intolerance of university officials.

Even the liberal Washington Post editorial board came to her defense. Of course, I suspect it did so because the Post knows full well just how embarrassing this story is for the militant homosexual rights movement. The left can’t afford to have real life examples like Dr. McCaskill making the obvious case against its radical agenda.

  • The 67th Annual Alfred E. Smith Dinner was held in New York last night. It’s a tradition that brings the presidential candidates — and the country — together for a welcomed break from the heat of the campaign. Governor Mitt Romney delivered some great one-liners! Click here to enjoy them.
