Cain In The Crossfire

The “big buzz” today in Washington is a Politico story alleging that Herman Cain sexually harassed two female employees. The allegations date back to the 1990s during his tenure as president of the National Restaurant Association and were settled out of court.

During an interview today with Fox News, Cain acknowledged that he had been falsely accused of sexual harassment, and said the allegations were proven false. Cain categorically denied that he sexually harassed anyone, calling the charges, “totally baseless and totally false.” But he left open the possibility that the National Restaurant Association may have settled the cases, saying, “If the restaurant association did a settlement, I wasn’t even aware of it and I hope it wasn’t for much.”

We have repeatedly warned you that this campaign would be among the most vicious in history, driven by the war room attack operation that the Democrat Party and its liberal allies have built in recent years and funded with donations from George Soros. That smear machine can slice and dice any conservative until even their own family members disown them!

It started with Robert Bork. It almost succeeded with Clarence Thomas. They did it to Sarah Palin, and they set their attack machine in motion when Michele Bachmann was leading the field. They’ve done it to Rick Perry — publishing his college transcripts and turning an racial epithet on a rock into a major news event that lasted for days. If Perry happens to pull off one of the most surprising political comebacks in recent memory and win the GOP nomination, that story will be resurrected and used to scare black voters to the polls.

Many of you have expressed concerns, which I also share, about the debates. At times they have become so negative that many fear our candidates are actually doing Obama’s work for him. I was not happy when the ludicrous story about a rock at Perry’s ranch broke and Herman Cain was among the first to jump on it, suggesting that it said something about Perry’s views on race. Likewise, I hope Perry and other GOP contenders will hold their fire before they start taking pleasure in these allegations about Herman Cain.

There are plenty of people in the media who want to smear anybody who threatens to disrupt Barack Obama and his plans for America. Remember Journolist? As it turns out, the “journalist” who broke the story on Herman Cain has a history of publishing hit pieces, including one headlined, “Is Rick Perry Dumb?” Maybe that is what it takes to succeed in Washington media circles, but it hardly qualifies as journalism.

My friends, I can’t remind you often enough that there are powerful forces that want you to focus on anything other than what Obama is doing to America. The man in the Oval Office doesn’t have a clue how the economy works. His foreign policy is giving the Islamists one victory after another. He is laying the foundation for men to “marry” men. Yet today the media are in a frenzy about unproven, decade-old allegations.

The liberal attack machine is desperate to convince you that every conservative is fatally flawed and your only option is four more years of Barack Obama. As I have said before, hope is gone. Fear and smear is all they have left. Don’t fall for it.

Normal Marriage Under Assault

Yesterday the Washington Times reported that supporters of same-sex “marriage” are launching a “full-court press” to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and radically redefine marriage in America.

According to the Times, homosexual service members have joined lawsuits seeking to have DOMA declared unconstitutional. Now that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has been repealed, DOMA is the only thing standing in the way of other benefits such as housing allowances. And while this case is being taken up in the First Circuit Court of Appeals, the Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote this week on legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

These lawsuits and the vote this week in the Senate Judiciary Committee are reminders that elections have consequences. Men and women of faith who believe in the sanctity of life, normal marriage and religious liberty cannot sit on the sidelines.

Barack Obama is refusing to defend the laws upholding traditional marriage. He is packing the courts with left-wing activists and has already made two Supreme Court appointments. If he gets four more years and one or two more appointments to our highest court, the battle for life and marriage may well be lost.

Occupy The Home

Polls show an overwhelming majority of Americans are pessimistic about the direction of our country.  It would be tempting to link our current malaise to the economy alone.  But it’s not just families’ finances that are broken.  In many cases, so are the families themselves. You can read more in my latest column at humanevents.com.

Schiff Speaks For The 1%

Investor Peter Schiff is a rich man. He is also a very brave man. CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, Schiff dared to go down to the Occupy Wall Street protest and speak for the 1%, the entrepreneurs and business owners who create jobs and pay an extraordinary amount of America’s tax bill. In his interviews with protestors, Schiff takes on “too big to fail,” student loans, crony capitalism and socialism, all while trying to redirect the protestors’ anger from Wall Street to Washington.

His man-on-the-street interviews are very illuminating. You can watch them here.

“We Can’t Wait” — Oh, Yes We Can!

I want to revisit Obama’s “We Can’t Wait” theme today. It is becoming more and more apparent that Obama plans on circumventing Congress with increasing frequency. And, of course, no one in big liberal media is speaking out against this obvious abuse of power.

Discussing immigration reform, Obama once said that he would like to “bypass Congress and change the laws on my own.” At the time, the media thought he was joking. Maybe not. His administration seems to be making immigration policy on a whim now. And the New York Times reports that Obama may issue a new executive order “each week through the rest of the year.”

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) defended Obama’s bypassing of Congress saying, “It’s necessary now because it’s a gridlock between the president and the United States.” Sorry, Charlie, but gridlock does not make it necessary. The president is not a dictator. He is not entitled to get whatever he wants. And while Obama is blaming congressional conservatives for blocking his demands, his fundamental problem is with the Constitution.

In their wisdom, our Founding Fathers created a system of checks and balances dispersing power throughout three branches of government. But Obama is increasingly usurping the powers of the other two branches. He is rewriting legislation with his executive orders, and refusing to defend established law. For example, he unilaterally declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.

Writing law and determining its constitutionality are functions reserved for Congress and the courts, respectively. You would think a former constitutional law professor at the University of Chicago Law School would know that! But then again, we have never seen his law school grades. Maybe he flunked — the same way he has failed as president.

The left and the media were apoplectic about George W. Bush’s use of executive authority to try to win a war and defend this nation — precisely the area where a president has the most authority and discretion. What exactly are the national security issues that required rewriting the laws on student loans?

Of course there weren’t any. It was a purely political ploy that really won’t help anyone, but it gave Obama a good campaign sound bite.

Obama also seems to have a problem with the process of governance. I realize people don’t like the bickering in Washington. But there has always been political division and disagreement in Washington since the days of the Federalists and the Whigs.

Yet since his first days as president, Obama has demanded that Congress pass his bills “without delay.” Remember how Obama has chided members of Congress asking “What are they waiting for?” Remember the chants of “Pass this bill!”?

That is not the way Congress works. There are subcommittees and full committees in each chamber. Both chambers must vote and then there is a conference committee to work out any differences. The process of governing a nation of 300 million may be slow and ugly, but it takes time to do it right.

Instead, Obama rushed through the stimulus bill, which was full of waste, and rammed through ObamaCare, which was so poorly written he has had to issue over 1,000 waivers and repeal certain sections.

But time is not a luxury Obama has. Each day he grows more desperate to revive an economy struggling under his socialist policies. And in his desperation to produce results he seems to be saying “We can’t wait — to violate the Constitution.”

Boehner Responds

Yesterday, Speaker of the House John Boehner spoke out against Barack Obama’s attempts to end-run Congress using his executive authority. On the Laura Ingraham show, Boehner said:

“I thought we were a nation of laws and that our country was governed by our Constitution. …this idea that you are just going to go around the Congress is just, it’s almost laughable. And so we are keeping a very close eye on the administration to make sure they are following the law and following the Constitution.”
Boehner added that he had “great concerns” that Obama could be violating the Constitution, and the speaker expressed a willingness to use his authority “to limit their use of funds to try to bring this administration to heel.” Good for him.

But gird yourselves, my friends. We know this is going to be the most vicious, negative campaign we have seen in years. And yet in the middle of a weak economy and a nasty political campaign, Barack Obama seems intent on instigating a constitutional crisis.

“Push The Envelope!”

If you need more evidence of the kind of campaign we can expect from the Obama White House, consider this Politico interview with White House Chief of Staff Bill Daly.

Daly complained, “It’s been a brutal three years. It’s been a very, very difficult three years.” But as I recently noted, Democrats had huge majorities in both the House and the Senate for Obama’s first two years. He got virtually everything he wanted. The few things he didn’t get were so radical — like closing GITMO and cap and trade — that he couldn’t even convince some of his fellow Democrats to go along. But now, Daly reveals, they have a Plan B.

“Let’s figure out what we can do [without Congress] and push the envelope on some of these things. On the foreign policy-military side, you can act pretty quickly. That is why the president, based upon frustration, is doing this ‘we can’t wait.’ … Let’s re-emphasize what powers we have! What we can do on our own! Push the envelope!”
When asked if Obama would be happy being a one-term president, as he has suggested in the past, Daly said, “Nope, no, absolutely not! I think he’d be angry! Pi**ed! Unhappy! Frustrated!”

Obama and his radical allies will either rule this country or they will wreck it!

Obama’s Malaise Speech

Obama’s presidency resembles Jimmy Carter’s more every day. The latest example came Tuesday at a San Francisco fundraiser when Obama chided the American people, saying, “We have lost our ambition, our imagination, and our willingness to do the things that built the Golden Gate Bridge.”

Every time Obama goes to “San Fran,” he lets his guard down and says what he really believes about the country that elected him. What is it about San Francisco that makes Obama run down his country? It was in front of a San Francisco audience that Obama made his infamous quip about bitter middle Americans clinging to their guns and religion.

Whether it was Carter in 1979 or Obama now, America doesn’t need a president whose first instinct is to blame others for his own failures.

Obama is just plain wrong. We couldn’t easily build the Golden Gate Bridge today because there would be layer upon of layer of bureaucratic red tape standing in the way. Then there would be environmental impact studies that would take years.

If you got past all of that, you might face lawsuits from liberals eager to protect the polka-dotted blueberry river flea that only mates in odd numbered years in the precise location where the bridge is to be built. Other lefties would object, claiming that a bridge only continues our dependence on cars and fossil fuels. And on and on it would go. We haven’t lost our ambition; we have been beaten down by the political left.

Obama has the audacity to lecture us about losing our imagination and willingness to do big things when he is the one who has slashed NASA’s budget. In fact, there are reports today that he plans to zero out funding for all planetary exploration.

Ronald Reagan never ran down America as Obama routinely does. He had an infectious love for this country. He believed America was a “shining city upon a hill,” a blessed nation that had a rendezvous with destiny. Yes, America has faced tough times. But we got through them — and not because we were soft or lacked imagination. If anything, it is Big Government, which the left constantly turns to, which lacks imagination, stifles innovation and causes people to go soft.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for November 2012!

Advantage Romney

New CNN/Time polls of the early voting states have good news for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Here’s how they break down by state:

  • Iowa: Romney 24%, Cain 21%, Paul 12%, Gingrich and Perry at 10%. No other candidate was in double digits.
  • New Hampshire: Romney 40%, Cain 13%, Paul 12%.
  • South Carolina: Romney 25%, Cain 23%, Paul 12%, Perry 11%.
  • Florida: Romney 30%, Cain 18%, Gingrich and Perry 9%.

Why is this important? While national polls show Herman Cain leading the GOP primary contest, the race won’t be decided in a single national primary. It will be decided in state-by-state elections, beginning with Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida.

With each victory, the winner — and perhaps the second and third place finishers — builds momentum. And as their losses mount and the money dries up, lower tier candidates quickly start dropping out.

Based on these latest big media polls, Romney appears to have the inside track for now, with Herman Cain emerging as the most likely challenger. Even though the vast majority of GOP primary voters are backing other candidates, as long as the field remains divided, it’s advantage Romney. However, another recent poll found that 80% of Republican voters also say they are not firmly committed to anyone!

Yesterday I was at a meeting with lots of conservative insiders. For many, Romney was not their first choice, but there was a lot of talk about a hypothetical Romney/Rubio ticket. (Coincidentally, the Washington Post today published its second hit piece on Sen. Marco Rubio in less than a week.)

What do you think? I’m particularly interested in your feedback, especially if Romney is not your first choice. Would adding Rubio to the ticket make you more or less comfortable with Romney? Use this link to respond.

Liberal Media Distortions

Here are two examples of how the media and liberals are distorting the facts to confuse voters and portray conservatives negatively.

Consider this headline from the front page of today’s Washington Post: “Democrats Make Offer: $3 Trillion In Cuts.” The average person is going to see that headline and think, “Hey, Democrats want to cut $3 trillion in spending.” It certainly got my attention. But the headline is deliberately misleading.

As we reported yesterday, Democrats on the deficit reduction super committee are demanding massive tax increases. As the Post eventually explains, Democrats are proposing $3 trillion in deficit reduction with at least $1.3 trillion coming from higher taxes. But as Rep. Paul Ryan noted this morning, this is in addition to the massive tax increases already baked into ObamaCare and other tax hikes scheduled for January 1, 2013.

Here’s the second example. In their desperation to retake the House, Democrats and the media know that Congress’ approval rating is in the tank. So Obama and his liberal allies are increasingly referring to the “Republican Congress.”

There is no Republican Congress — they only control the House. Democrats, under Harry Reid, control the Senate. Liberals and media are trying to tar all Republicans with Congress’ unpopularity. Moreover, it is also hard for Obama to run against a “Do-Nothing” Congress when his party controls half of it!

Is The House At Risk?

Democrats are desperate to make Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House once again, and they think they can pull it off.

Their strategy begins by targeting 19 GOP-held House seats that voted for Obama in 2008 and John Kerry in 2004. One these “Obama/Kerry Republicans” is conservative hero Allen West in FL-22. After that, Democrats are focused on 43 districts that voted for Obama, but backed George W. Bush in 2004. This gives Pelosi 62 targets — and she only needs to win 25.

A left-leaning polling firm just completed surveys in 12 GOP-held districts and the results are worrisome. When voters were asked if they would “like to reelect” their current representative, the results ranged from a low of 33% to a high of 44%, which suggests that all 12 incumbents would likely lose if the elections were held today.

Let me add this caveat: This was a liberal poll and 9 of the 12 districts polled were in the liberal states of California and Illinois. That said, no one should fool themselves into thinking that 2012 will be a repeat of 2010. The greater danger is that it looks more like 2008, when Democrats ran the tables and captured all three branches of government.

I’m not predicting a disaster at the ballot box, but we know this much: Obama’s reelection campaign will spend $1 billion to boost turnout among liberal voters. Conservatives who narrowly won in marginal districts last year are vulnerable next year. And especially so if the redistricting process went poorly in their states.

Here’s my bottom line: As I have said before, complacency is our worst enemy. Everything is at stake in 2012. I don’t want to see Barack Obama narrowly reelected and Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House again because conservatives took the elections for granted.

I want to see Obama defeated in a landslide, our House majority expanded and Harry Reid evicted from the Senate Majority Leader’s office because every conservative worked his heart out to save our country!

Obama/Reid/Pelosi Want Your Last Dollar!

The Hill is reporting that Democrats on the deficit reduction “super committee” this week demanded massive tax increases AND more stimulus spending. Consider this excerpt:

“Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, presented a proposal backed by a majority of Democrats on the panel that includes trillions of dollars in tax increases. The revenue would partially cover stimulus spending for the economy, aides said. More than 50 percent of the deficit reduction in the plan would come from tax increases.”
Democrats just don’t get it! The super committee was charged with getting the deficit under control. What caused the deficit? Out-of-control spending. So Democrats do what comes naturally — they raise taxes and spend even more. That formula hasn’t worked yet. But doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different outcome is a classic definition of insanity.

Obama Buying Votes With Your Money

At a recent campaign event, Barack Obama told supporters that his reelection effort would not be as “sexy” as his 2008 campaign. On many college campuses, Obama’s 2008 campaign was more like a cult. But after nearly three years of Obamanomics and high unemployment, the scales have fallen from many youthful eyes. Desperate to energize his base, Obama is once again dolling out tax dollars — your money.

According to White House leaks, Obama plans to issue a new executive order enabling students to cap college loan repayments at 10% of their income starting next year. Under current law, the cap is 15%, but it was scheduled to be reduced to 10% in 2014 as authorized by Congress last year. Any remaining debts not paid off in 20 years will be forgiven, instead of 25 years as stipulated under current law.

Student loan debt has exploded in recent years. The average graduate left college in 2009 with not only a degree, but also $24,000 in student loans. Student loan debt has surpassed credit card debt and will top $1 trillion in obligations this year. USA Today reported this week that, “Total outstanding [student loan] debt has doubled in the past five years.”

Now I know a lot of you reading this probably have college-age children or grandchildren who may be struggling with their student loans. I understand their pain. But no one should applaud this latest Obama scheme.

First, I’ll concede that there is a lot the president can do with his executive authority. But no matter how admirable his intentions, I do not believe any president has the power to rewrite laws, which is precisely what Obama is doing by changing dates (2014 to 2012) and terms (25 years to 20 years) in existing federal statutes.

Second, Obama has offered this up as part of his dictatorial “We Can’t Wait” approach to governing. But I’m not aware of this plan being included in anything Obama has sent to Congress this year. He’s just accelerating some changes that Congress authorized last year.

Third, while Obama’s plan might help make payments easier, it does nothing to address the cause of the problem of college debt — skyrocketing college tuition costs. According to the Heritage Foundation, college tuition has increased 439% since 1982, more than healthcare costs. Tuition rates jumped more than 8% this year alone.

Lastly, a key demand of the Occupy Wall Street movement is free college and forgiveness of student loans. But, like credit card debt and home loans, education debt is voluntary. No one forced students to take out these loans. When you contract for a service, there is an expectation of payment. When you take out a loan, you have to pay it back. That’s how businesses and the economy functions. Obama’s plan makes “suckers” out of all students who have paid off their debt.

The moral hazard involved in government interference with the free market is tremendous. The idea that Big Government can wave a magic wand and make debt disappear or make jobs appear is creating a detrimental dependence that will doom our republic.

OWS Movement Turns Violent

While the “mainstream” media desperately tries to portray the Occupy Wall Street movement as representative of middle America, there is more evidence today of the radical left-wing influences behind it. Fox News reports that the disgraced community organizing outfit ACORN is actively supporting the riffraff in Zuccotti Park — even paying homeless people $10 an hour to join the protests.

Meanwhile, across the country, the movement is creating more problems than solutions. And in some cases it is turning violent. For example:

  • In Boston and other cities, officials are increasingly worried about health hazards. This week Boston police arrested two occupiers for selling heroin.
  • Today’s New York Post reports that OWS organizers in Zuccotti Park are increasingly frustrated that their free food is attracting the homeless, gangs and ex-cons just released from prison. Evidently, they don’t want to share their free food and free sleeping bags with “vultures.” OWS “sanitation volunteer” Lauren Digioia complained, “We’re talking about occupying… This group is squatting here and using our resources.” Perhaps there is hope for Ms. Digioia yet! Millions of hardworking Americans feel the same way about free-loading socialists.
  • In Oakland, California, riots broke out yesterday after the police evicted the occupiers from their camp. Numerous disturbing videos of the violence have been posted online. In one instance, a group of police officers was encircled by a mob and attacked with water bottles and paint bombs.

Next time you hear Barack Obama or some other left-wing politician praise the Occupy Wall Street movement, ask yourself how many Tea Partiers were arrested for selling drugs? How many Tea Partiers attacked cops? How many Tea Party events ended up in full-blown riots?

These radicals do not represent average Americans, and honest Democrats know it. While the left is occupying Wall Street, we need to devote all of our resources to occupying the White House in 2013!

Obama On The Attack

In today’s daily Rasmussen tracking poll, the number of voters who “strongly support” President Obama fell to a new low of 18%. His overall rating is in the low 40s. But the fact that only 18% strongly approve is a huge problem for an incumbent seeking reelection.

Faced with falling approval ratings, Obama is going on the attack. In Las Vegas yesterday we got a preview of what the 2012 campaign is going to look like: Slash and burn conservatives and the GOP.

Obama repeated the dubious claim that his so-called jobs bill would create two million new jobs. I’ve addressed Obama’s false claim before, so I won’t rehash it. But what struck me about the president’s various speeches yesterday was how petty he was.

Instead of making the case for his new housing proposal, Obama spent much of his time attacking congressional Republicans. He even attacked Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell by name. At another venue Obama said this:

“I’m here to say that we can’t wait for an increasingly dysfunctional Congress to do its job. Where they won’t act, I will. …There is no excuse for the games and gridlock we’ve seen in Washington. … Where we don’t have to wait for Congress, we’re just going to go ahead and act on our own.”
Let me remind you of something. We are nearly three years into Obama’s term. When Obama was inaugurated the unemployment rate was 7.2%. For his first two years, Democrats dominated Washington. With huge liberal majorities in the House and Senate, Obama got virtually everything he wanted, including a massive $800 billion stimulus bill and his socialized medicine scheme. And today the unemployment rate is 9.1%.

My friends, congressional Republicans and conservatives are not responsible for Obama’s dysfunctional economy. But he is trying to pin the blame on them. As I have said before, hope and change is gone. Fear and smear is all the Democrats have left. Hoping to exploit the growing anxiety felt across the country, Obama has morphed “Yes we can” into “We can’t wait.”

Obama and his left-wing allies will spend hundreds of millions of dollars, perhaps even a billion dollars, trying to convince you, your friends at work and church, your kids and grandchildren, that conservatives and the Tea Party are responsible for his mess.

Don’t let your friends and family members fall for the left’s spin. Use the information we present in this daily report, such as our debunking of Obama’s jobs plan. Tell them that House Republicans have passed 15 bills that will help spur job creation but that the Democrat-controlled Senate won’t act. Fight back! We can’t afford four more years of Obama’s failed policies.

A Taxing Debate: Flat Versus Sales

Tax reform is again taking center stage in the GOP presidential contest. Texas Governor Rick Perry announced his economic plan today, which he calls “Cut, Balance and Grow” — cut federal spending, balance the budget by 2020 and grow the economy.

The centerpiece of Perry’s plan is a new voluntary 20% flat tax on personal and corporate income. The plan preserves the most popular deductions for mortgage interest, charitable contributions and state and local taxes for families with incomes under $500,000. It also eliminates the capital gains tax and the death tax.

Perry is also proposing serious entitlement reform, including personal retirement accounts for younger workers. You can read more about Perry’s economic plan here.

Yesterday, Newt Gingrich previewed his economic agenda in an op-ed in Iowa’s Quad-City Times. Like Perry, Gingrich is calling for a voluntary flat tax, but with lower rates of 15% for individuals and 12.5% for corporations.

The leading Republican contenders have all laid out broad economic plans. Mitt Romney’s plan largely favors reforming and flattening of the existing code, while Gingrich and Perry are backing a flat tax. Herman Cain has proposed a combination of low flat taxes and a low national sales tax, with the ultimate goal of transitioning entirely to a national sales tax.

I’m not taking a position on the flat tax versus the national sales tax. But this is a crucial issue that deserves serious debate. Consumer confidence is down yet again. Housing prices are down. Wages are down. Unemployment is up. Inflation is up. The GOP contenders are offering bold economic reforms intended to dramatically spur growth so the economy can create millions of new jobs.

What is Obama offering? Another stimulus bill. It’s the same liberal prescription of higher taxes, more spending and bigger government. But as we can see from Europe, that is a dead-end road.

We can’t wait for Obama to get it right. We need a change to restore America’s hope!

OWS And Its Extreme Supporters

The ads by the Emergency Committee for Israel (ECI) exposing the blatant anti-Semitism within the Occupy Wall Street movement have struck a nerve. J Street, a Soros-funded leftist group that claims to be pro-Israel and yet always takes the pro-Palestinian position, launched a vicious attack on one of ECI’s board members.

Liberal Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote a column attacking ECI for exposing the anti-Semitism within the OWS movement, claiming he couldn’t find any. (Did you see the ad, Richard?) Disgraced politician Eliot Spitzer is also upset. Perhaps that’s because we exposed him in the ad too.

Sadly reinforcing our point, Klansman and bigot David Duke released a web video endorsing Occupy Wall Street while also engaging in some of the worst Jew-baiting since Joseph Goebbels.

Praised by Barack Obama and leading Democrats, the Occupy Wall Street movement continues to rack up a long list of extremist supporters — from the American Nazi Party and the Communist Party USA (here) to pro-OWS demonstrators in Tehran and North Korea. But, according to big media, this menagerie of communists, socialists, anti-Semites, anarchists and drug legalizers represents middle America!

Obama In Full Campaign Mode

President Obama, fresh off his campaign bus tour through North Carolina and Virginia, is headed to Las Vegas, Nevada for — you guessed it — more campaigning. Today Obama will announce yet another plan designed to help homeowners refinance their mortgages in the hopes of jumpstarting the economy. Later this week, Obama is reportedly going to announce a new policy on student loans.

Like the rest of his economic agenda, thus far his mortgage refinancing programs have been total failures. Consider these dueling headlines from the Washington Post: “Obama’s Efforts To Aid Homeowners Fall Short” and “Government Announces New Program To Help ‘Underwater’ Homeowners.”

There are distressed housing markets all over the country, but Obama is going to Nevada. Why not California or Florida? Why not just make an announcement from the White House? Why rack up another huge travel tab at taxpayer expense?

The answer is obvious. Like everything else coming out of this White House, there is only one goal in mind: Get Obama reelected.

Nevada — just like North Carolina and Virginia — is a key state in Obama’s reelection calculus. It has voted for the Republican candidate in seven of the last ten presidential elections. Bush carried it in 2000 and 2004, but Obama won the Silver State in 2008.

Just in case you think I’m being overly cynical, even the Washington Post acknowledges, “Doing more to address the housing crisis may be crucial not only for an economy flirting with another recession but also for a president running for reelection.” And NBC political reporters wrote, “So,economically, it’s unlikely that this new policy will have a big impact. But, politically, it could be more successful.”

In addition, there is a disturbing theme coming out of the Obama White House now. According to various news reports, Obama’s actions on housing and student loans stems from the conclusion that “we can’t wait” for Congress to act, so Obama has to act unilaterally.

We have seen this president act unilaterally in the past — dropping charges against the New Black Panther Party, ordering immigration officers to use “discretion,” granting waivers without legal authority, refusing to defend laws protecting normal marriage, committing U.S. forces in Libya without authorization or clear objectives, etc.

These latest actions seem to be legally permissible within the president’s executive authority. But we will be watching very closely.

Will Foreign Policy Help Obama?

As Obama struggles to win reelection with the economy hanging around his neck like an albatross, today’s New York Times asks whether Obama can be helped by foreign policy. On CNBC this morning, John Harwood, who has an uncanny ability to put a positive spin on any Obama disaster, tried to argue the same point. Let’s consider some of Obama’s foreign policy “successes.”

  • Bin Laden’s death and other Al-Qaeda assassinations: In these instances, the only thing that the president has to do is authorize the missions. And there is only one right decision in each case — DO IT! President Bush initiated the policy of drone attacks and Obama has simply followed in his footsteps.
  • The Arab Spring that Obama promoted is quickly turning out to be an American nightmare. The Associated Press reports that initial results from the elections in Tunisia indicate “a once-banned Islamist party is leading in the country that unleashed uprisings across the Arab world.” In Libya, the rulers of the transitional government just announced the reintroduction of polygamy in accordance with Sharia law. And the Muslim Brotherhood is poised to take over Egypt.
  • As happy as we all are to have the troops home from Iraq, top military experts say Obama’s withdrawal is a strategic mistake that surrenders the country to Iran. Retired Army Brigadier General Mark T. Kimmitt, a former deputy operations chief in Baghdad, said, “Strategically, it’s obvious. This is a big win for Tehran.”

Retired Army General John Keane said, “I think it’s an absolute disaster. We won the war in Iraq, and we’re now losing the peace. …We’re losing the peace because the No. 1 strategic enemy we have in the region is Iran. And as a result of us pulling away from Iraq, we’re losing our influence in Iraq. And the Iranians are gaining influence in Iraq. And that strategically should be unacceptable to us.”

Obama Bows To Islamists

In an unbelievable bow to Islamists, The Daily Caller reports that the Obama Administration has ordered law enforcement and national security communities to “eliminate all references to Islam” in their counterterrorism training materials. The action was reportedly taken in response to complaints from CAIR and other Muslim apologists. In fact, the president of the Muslim Public Affairs Council recently published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times demanding a “clear and unequivocal apology to the Muslim American community” from the FBI and the Justice Department.

This is more evidence of the widespread denial and political correctness that infects our elites. This is not a war or terrorism. Terrorism is a tactic of war, but a war requires an enemy. If we are fighting a war on terrorism then World War II was a war on blitzkriegs and kamikazes. It is ludicrous to refuse to identify the enemy.

There are, no doubt, many Muslims who simply want to live peaceful lives. Most Muslims are not terrorists. But there were also many Germans who were not Nazis and simply wanted to live peaceful lives. With all due respect to the moderate Muslims, the Muslims who matter most are the ones trying to kill us. And it is vital that we understand what is motivating them to “kill the infidel.”

Fact Checking Biden

In my report last week, I blasted Joe Biden’s over-the-top rhetoric for suggesting that rapes and murders would go up if Congress did not approve Obama’s latest $450 billion stimulus bill. Biden made those remarks in Flint, Michigan, saying that rapes and murders had spiked as the city was forced to lay off police. Guess what? As usual, Biden has his facts wrong.

According to FactCheck.org, rapes and murders in Flint are down. Consider this excerpt:

“Speaking in Flint on Oct. 12, Biden said murder and rape statistics skyrocketed in that city from 2008 to 2010 (even though, as we reported, FBI data show rapes in Flint declined during that period). Biden then added: ‘God only knows what the numbers will be this year in Flint.’ Actually the Michigan State Police know, for at least the first six months of the year, because the city is required to report instances of crime. And rather than supporting Biden’s argument, the evidence we found undercuts it.”
But if Biden really is worried about spiking crime rates, he might want to reconsider his support of the Occupy Wall Street movement. According to the New York Post, thefts are plaguing the protestors (who, ironically, are protesting greed) and shootings have skyrocketed 154%.

The Limits Of States’ Rights

States’ rights became a flashpoint in the campaign again last week when Herman Cain offered confusing statements on abortion and traditional marriage. I’ve always believed that the government that’s closest to the people governs best.  But the definition of society’s most vital institution and the protection of its most vulnerable persons are so basic to our understanding of democracy that they must be taken up nationally. Senate Again Rejects Obama’s “Jobs” Bill

For the second time, the Democrat-controlled Senate has rejected Obama’s so-called “jobs” bill. Last week the Senate shot down Obama’s massive $450 billion stimulus bill. Undaunted, Obama and Reid vowed to break the bill up and pass it in pieces.

First up was a $35 billion bailout of state and local government workers. Why did that small sliver of the bill take precedence over the other 92% of it? Well, according to Harry Reid, “It’s very clear that private-sector jobs have been doing just fine; it’s the public-sector jobs where we’ve lost huge numbers, and that’s what this legislation is all about.”

Unfortunately for Harry, his public employee union bailout failed on a 50-to-50 vote with three Democrats joining all Senate Republicans in opposition.

There is an important point to keep in mind here. Obama and his Democrat allies are quick to suggest that Republicans are voting against teachers and first responders. That is false. What Republicans object to is yet another bailout/takeover by Big Government.

Teachers, firefighters and cops are obligations of local and state governments, not the federal government. If local governments can’t meet their budgets they should cut back or raise taxes. Washington is spending record sums of money and incurring record deficits. Clearly we cannot afford the government we have now.

A lot of money for state and local workers was included in Obama’s $800 billion stimulus bill in 2009. It was supposed be temporary. Now Joe Biden is raising the specter of rape and murder if we don’t keep funding this “temporary” program. As Ronald Reagan was fond of saying, “The closest thing to immorality on earth is a government program.”

About That “Jobs” Bill

President Obama has the audacity to claim that his latest stimulus bill would create 2 million jobs. That came from an analysis by Mark Zandi of Moody’s. But when pressed for details, Zandi admitted, “I didn’t know when I did that simulation how the president proposed to pay for it.”

Moreover it was only a one year projection for 2012. Zandi added, “Beginning in 2013, and certainly into 2014, the plan is a drag on the economy because the stimulus starts fading away,” while Obama’s tax increases remain in effect. Nevertheless, Obama continued to repeat his “2 million jobs” claim during his campaign bus tour through the swing states of North Carolina and Virginia.

As a result, the folks at FactCheck.org decided to take a look at Obama’s jobs spin. Here is their conclusion: “President Obama exaggerates when he claims ‘independent economists’ say his jobs bill ‘would create nearly 2 million jobs.’ The median estimate in a survey of 34 economists showed 288,000 jobs could be saved or created over two years under the president’s plan.”

More Green Jobs/Stimulus Waste

Here’s another reason to resist the siren song of Big Government stimulus spending. In 2009, Fisker Automotive received a $529 million loan from the federal government in exchange for the promise of creating so-called “green jobs” by producing electric cars at a shuttered GM plant in Delaware.

Two years ago, in announcing the half billion dollar loan at the Delaware plant, Vice President Joe Biden said, “Folks, we’re making a bet. We’re making a bet on the future, we’re making a bet on the American people, we’re making a bet on the market, we’re making a bet on innovation.” As it turns out, by trying to manipulate the market, Biden made a bad bet against the American taxpayer.

ABC News reports that Fisker has just announced it will manufacture its cars in Finland, not Delaware. And just like Solyndra, there are allegations of crony capitalism and political paybacks involving Al Gore and major Democrat donors.

That’s bad enough. But it’s far from certain that the taxpayers will even get their money back. What kind of market exists for Fisker’s $97,000 electric car? So far “Government Motors” has only managed to sell 4,000 of the $41,000 taxpayer-subsidized Chevy Volt.

This is what happens when Big Government makes bets with your money. Taxpayers almost always end up as the biggest losers.

Reporters Scrutinizing Rubio

The left-wing media’s double standard is on full display today. The front page of the Washington Post features a 1,600-word investigative report on Marco Rubio’s family history. The Post is accusing Rubio of “embellishing” the facts about his family’s decision to leave Castro’s Cuba. The depth of research is fascinating. The Post’s reporters even went so far as to examine the Social Security numbers of Rubio’s family members!

Of course, the Post is only interested in the junior senator from Florida because many see him as a rising star in the conservative movement — even a leading contender for the GOP vice presidential nomination in 2012. So the liberal media are eager to start tearing him down.

But where was this kind of media scrutiny when Barack Obama first appeared on the national scene? Having gone to such great lengths to unearth naturalization papers, passports and Social Security numbers for the Rubio family, perhaps the Post’s crack investigative team will now devote their full energies to revealing Obama’s college transcripts, law review articles, etc.

Exposing OWS Radicalism

The unfortunate Manhattan residents who live near Zuccotti Park are fed up with the Occupy Wall Street protestors. Hundreds showed up at a community board meeting last night to vent their frustrations. One resident said, “They’re defecating on our doorsteps.” Another complained, “The protesters taunt people who are on their way to work.” And this is the movement Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and other leading Democrats were so quick to embrace.

Yesterday I was on the Fox Business Network exposing the growing anti-Semitism on display in the Occupy Wall Street movement. To watch the interview, click here.

My friends, I would not have had this opportunity to speak up without your help. It is your support that makes our work possible. Thank you!
