Another Jihadist Sent To “Paradise”

Al Qaeda mouthpiece Anwar al-Awlaki is dead. The American-born Yemeni cleric met his end this morning in a coordinated airstrike that reportedly involved U.S. jets and drones. Awlaki was linked to various acts of terrorism, including 9/11 and the Fort Hood shooting. He was an avowed jihadist and sworn enemy of the United States. His demise is good news in America’s war against Islamofascism.

Biden: It’s Obama’s Fault

During a radio interview yesterday, Vice President Joe Biden went rogue and denied the administration’s spin on the economy. According to Biden, it is not Bush’s fault! Here’s what he said:

“Right now, understandably — totally legitimate — this is a referendum on Obama and Biden and … the state of the economy. …What’s relevant is we’re in charge. And right now we are the ones in charge and it’s gotten better, but it hasn’t gotten good enough. I don’t blame them for being mad. We’re in charge.”
I’m not sure how things have gotten better. The unemployment rate today is higher than it was when the Obama/Biden team took office. And while Joe Biden might not blame the American people for being mad, President Obama appears to blame them.

In an interview with a Florida TV station, Obama said, “…this is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft and, you know, we didn’t have that same competitive edge that we needed over the last couple of decades. We need to get back on track.”

What on earth is he talking about? Did we lose our “competitive edge” when the Reagan economy was booming? Was America “soft” when we took on Al Qaeda and liberated 50 million Muslims in two nations? If anything, America may have gone “a little soft” when so many fell for all the hype about “hope and change” in 2008. But don’t worry, Mr. Obama. We’ll get back on track in January 2013 when you join the unemployment line!

Durbin: Obama Jobs Bill Can’t Pass

For weeks now, President Obama has been barnstorming the country demanding that Congress pass his latest tax-hiking, big spending stimulus bill. And at every opportunity he has blamed congressional Republicans for holding up his so-called “jobs bill.” While it’s accurate to say that Republicans don’t support Obama’s tax increases, it is completely false to accuse them of stonewalling the bill.

Unbelievably, Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid hasn’t even scheduled a vote yet. But here’s the kicker. During an interview with a Chicago radio station yesterday, Senate Democrat Whip Dick Durbin was asked if Senate Democrats have the votes to pass Obama’s bill since they control the majority. Durbin responded: “Not at the moment, I don’t think we do.”

Obama’s jobs bill isn’t passing because quite a few Senate Democrats don’t support it!

Christie: The Consensus Candidate?

The clamoring for Chris Christie continues, and there are indications that he is reconsidering his decision not to run in 2012. A new Rasmussen poll finds that Christie would be competitive against Obama. The candidates are in a dead-heat — Obama at 44% and Christie at 43%. In the past 24 hours, there have been two major developments worth noting.

First, the media are now reporting on Christie’s health and weight. For example, in today’s Washington Post you will find stories headlined: “A Leader For These Belt-Tightening Times?” and “Christie’s Hefty Burden.”

As I have said before, the left-wing media will do whatever it can to smear our nominee — even if that means resorting to fat jokes in order to make Christie’s weight a disqualifying issue.

But on a more serious note, others are beginning to scrutinize Christie’s record, and just like Romney and Perry, there are things about Chris Christie that conservatives will not like. Here is a brief excerpt from today’s Wall Street Journal:

“Less mentioned are his views on a range of other issues — from abortion and immigration to gun control and energy policy — that reflect the relatively liberal shade of his state but could dog Mr. Christie if jumps into the nomination fight.”
On the abortion issue specifically, the Journal notes that during his 2009 gubernatorial campaign, Christie opposed parental notification laws — one of the least controversial pro-life positions. In fact, 35 states currently have parental notification laws.

The Left’s War On Our Military

Today the Associated Press reports that the Pentagon will now allow military chaplains to perform same-sex “marriages” on military bases. In April, the House of Representatives voted to prevent the Pentagon from adopting such a policy because the U.S. military is a federal institution bound by federal law. Whether President Obama likes it or not, the Defense of Marriage Act is still binding federal law. But wait… there’s more.

Now that President Obama has officially ended the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, the militant homosexual rights crowd is demanding Obama issue an executive order banning discrimination in the military based on “gender identity” so that transgendered individuals can serve. Really?

According to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), “transgender” refers to “transsexuals, cross-dressers, gender-queer people, intersex people, and other gender-variant individuals.” (You learn something new every day!) This is the problem with the homosexual rights movement. It starts out by demanding “tolerance,” so “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is gone. But now we have to have a regiment of cross-dressing, “gender-variant individuals” too.

I know our military can defeat the jihadists. But whether it can stop the left-wing social radicals in the Obama Administration is another question.

Obama Gets A Hallmark Card

He’s been on the cover of every major magazine, so it seems only natural that Obama would have his own Hallmark card. Sadly, this is no joking matter.

Thanks to the “Obama recession” Hallmark has introduced a new line of cards — sympathy cards for the millions of Americans suffering from layoffs and job losses. This is the reality of Obama’s failed policies.

I think every card should have a picture of Obama on the front and come with a voter registration form on the inside! But rather than spending $5 on a card, I have a better idea, one that will actually make a difference.

2012 Update

  • Texas Governor Rick Perry was on CNBC this morning discussing the economy, jobs and other issues. He handled Social Security and immigration much more skillfully than he has in the debates. In an interview with Newsmax yesterday, Perry apologized for suggesting that conservatives opposed to giving in-state tuition benefits to the children of illegal aliens are heartless.

Watching Perry handle several tough questions was a good reminder that, even as the days fly by, the path to the GOP nomination is a long and unpredictable road. I have no doubt that Gov. Perry should have the resources to stay in the campaign for the long haul. If he can improve his debate performances, he’ll be back in the saddle again!

  • The Neville Chamberlain Award For Naiveté goes to Texas Congressman Ron Paul. Paul was on Washington’s WMAL this morning, and made some profoundly disturbing remarks.

Paul began by advocating that America retreat from Iraq and Afghanistan. Not a strategic drawdown or phased withdrawal as the generals recommend, but “get out now.” Doing so would only convince the jihadists that they have won and America has been defeated.

Rep. Paul said there was no evidence that Iran was attempting to build nuclear weapons. He denied that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ever threatened Israel’s existence, and suggested that if we could deal with the Soviets then we can deal with the mullahs. Clearly, he has no understanding of the radical Shiite beliefs that drive their thinking.

Whatever one may think of his limited government philosophy, parts of which I admire, Paul’s views on national defense and foreign policy are dangerous and disqualifying.

  • As Fox News reports that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is out of the race, the New York Post reports today that he just might get in. According to the Post, Christie was moved by the reception he received at the Reagan Library. In addition, he has reportedly been urged to reconsider by Nancy Reagan, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former President George W. Bush. Stay tuned!
  • For weeks now left-wing pundits have taken great delight in suggesting that all the talk about Chris Christie shows how discouraged Republican voters are and how likely it is that Barack Obama will be reelected. I’ll concede that there is a degree of frustration among grassroots activists that an articulate and viable conservative (the next Ronald Reagan) has yet to emerge. But don’t let the media’s spin get you down.

The latest Gallup poll finds that it is Democrats who are struggling with demoralization. According to Gallup, only 45% of Democrats are enthusiastic about voting in 2012, while 58% of Republicans can’t wait for the chance to vote Obama out!

So while Republicans may be frustrated that they don’t yet have a nominee, the party that knows who its nominee will be is the most demoralized! I feel their pain!

In case you are wondering why, Gallup can answer that too. Just 11% of Americans are satisfied with the direction of the country — “among the worst [results] on record in a trend that dates to 1979.” Yes, even during the “malaise days” of Jimmy Carter, satisfaction with the direction of the country bottomed out at only 12%.

Plot Foiled To Bomb Pentagon, Capitol

By now, you have probably heard about the guy who tried to bomb the Pentagon and the Capitol Building by flying drones or remote controlled model airplanes into the buildings. Today’s Washington Post dutifully reports the foiled plot on page A3.

You’ll recall that the Post did not hesitate to portray the mass murderer who attacked a youth camp in Norway as a right-wing, Christian conservative even though he wasn’t a church goer and didn’t believe in prayer. Now let’s consider the reporting on this latest plot against the Pentagon and Capitol.

In the Post headline, we learn the suspect is a “man.” In the subtitle, we are told this “man” is a “physics graduate.” In the first paragraph, we learn he is 26. In paragraph two, we learn his name, Rezwan Ferdaus, and that he is a U.S.-born citizen.

The first time the word “Muslim” appears is in reporting that some FBI tactics offend “Muslims who accuse the government” of entrapment. In the seventh and eighth paragraphs we learn that Ferdaus graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, and that he lived in his parents’ basement.

Here we also learn that he had been planning “violent jihad against the United States in early 2010,” described Americans as “enemies of Allah,” and wanted to “decapitate” our “military center.” Yet never once does the Washington Post refer to Ferdaus as a “Muslim extremist.”

Religious “Tolerance” In Iran

Yousef Nadarkhani is under a death sentence in Iran and awaiting execution. His crime: professing his Christian faith. Nadarkhani has refused to renounce his faith and embrace Islam, and for that the mullahs have sentenced him to death.

Yesterday, Speaker John Boehner issued a statement condemning Iran’s tyrannical regime. Here is an excerpt:

“Religious freedom is a universal human right. … While Iran’s government claims to promote tolerance, it continues to imprison many of its people because of their faith. This goes beyond the law to an issue of fundamental respect for human dignity. I urge Iran’s leaders to abandon this dark path, spare Yousef Nadarkhani’s life, and grant him a full and unconditional release.”
Kudos to Speaker Boehner. But where is the statement from Secretary of State Clinton or President Obama? Oh, that’s right — they are too busy condemning the construction of homes for Jews in Jerusalem.

Taxing Your Retirement

Last week, with little notice, Senate Democrats held a hearing in the Finance Committee on ways to tax retirement savings. Just as we are beginning to have a national discussion about reforming entitlements and saving Social Security, Senate Democrats are trying to make it more difficult for hard-working Americans to save more.

Here’s the thrust of the proposal: Contributions to 401(k) accounts would be subject to taxation, as would contributions to IRAs. Employer contributions would also be treated as taxable income. But you would be eligible for a refundable tax credit that would be deposited into some account.

And when you retire, guess what? “[W]ithdrawals from the accounts would continue to be taxed as income.” Under current plans, you are taxed only once — either now or later. But this new liberal proposal “shockingly” suggests that savers may be double-taxed.

This bizarre idea is going nowhere, thankfully, because conservatives control the House of Representatives. But it is a good reminder of the differences between the two parties. Democrats’ first instinct is always to raise taxes and find more revenue for Big Government, while Republicans want to let you keep more of your hard-earned money!

Obama’s State Department Hits Israel Again

The housing authority in Jerusalem just took another step forward in the approval process to build new housing units. No big deal, right? Wrong! Obama’s State Department bureaucrats immediately issued a statement condemning Israel for this provocation, calling it a threat to the peace process.

Why? Because the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as their new capital, and they intend to have it as a “Jew-free” zone. Thus new homes for Israeli Jews become a threat to peace.

Here’s an idea: Instead of Obama and the State Department’s “ethnic cleansing crowd” focusing on whether Israel should build homes, they should examine the agenda of the likely leaders of a new Palestinian state. That agenda isn’t about a “Jew-free” East Jerusalem. It is about a Jew-free Middle East!

Just a few days ago, Abbas Zaki, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, told Al-Jazeera this about the preferred strategy to accomplish their ultimate goal:

“The settlement [with Israel] should be based upon the borders of June 4, 1967. When we say that the settlement should be based upon these borders, President [Abbas] understands, we understand, and everybody knows that the greater goal cannot be accomplished in one go. If Israel withdraws from Jerusalem, evacuates the 650,000 settlers, and dismantles the wall — what will become of Israel? It will come to an end. If we say that we want to wipe Israel out….C’mon, it’s too difficult. It’s not [acceptable] policy to say so. Don’t say these things to the world. Keep it to yourself.”
(Many thanks to the great research group MEMRI for this quote.)

I am still waiting for someone in the Obama Administration to condemn Zaki’s call for a second Holocaust.

Christie: Obama Dividing America

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie addressed a sold-out audience at the Reagan Library last night. While reiterating previous statements that he would not run for president, Christie fired a withering broadside against Obama’s campaign of division. Consider this exceprt:

“President Obama prepares to divide our nation to achieve re-election. This is not a leadership style, this is a re-election strategy. Telling those who are scared and struggling that the only way their lives can get better is to diminish the success of others. Trying to cynically convince those who are suffering that the American economic pie is no longer a growing one that can provide more prosperity for all who work hard. Insisting that we must tax and take and demonize those who have already achieved the American Dream. That may turn out to be a good re-election strategy for President Obama, but is a demoralizing message for America.”
Gov. Christie is right. The Washington Post wrote this week that Obama’s campaign strategy will focus on “ethnic minorities and core liberals.” To get out a massive vote from the left, Obama has to demonize YOU and anyone who questions him.

Here’s one example. Leftists at MSNBC are blasting the Associated Press for being “inherently racist.” What was AP’s sin? It accurately transcribed Obama’s speech before the Congressional Black Caucus. That makes about as much sense as Morgan Freeman’s recent remarks about Tea Party members. But as you can see, they are not trying to defend Obama’s failed policies; they are trying to draw attention away from them.

We have written repeatedly that Obama’s only shot at reelection is to scare enough Americans into voting for him. How do you do that? You tell homeowners that they are losing their homes because millionaires and billionaires aren’t paying their fair share in taxes. You tell seniors that in spite of the Democrats’ record spending and deficits, it’s Republicans who want to kill Medicare and Social Security. And you tell blacks, as a liberal representative recently did, that conservatives want to see them “hanging from trees.”

As Governor Christie noted, this is a far cry from Obama’s rousing rhetoric of unity and transcending partisanship. But 2012 will not be 2008. Hope and change have given way to fear and smear.

This is what we are fighting against, friends. Please stand with us today! Click here to support CWF right now!

Democrat Solution: Suspend Elections

Democrats are reading the same polls we are, and they are getting desperate. So much so, in fact, that Governor Beverly Perdue (D-NC) thinks we ought to just cancel the next election! Here’s what Gov. Perdue told a Rotary Club meeting yesterday:

“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.”
Perdue’s staff immediately went into damage control mode and suggested that her remarks were a joke, “obvious hyperbole.” I don’t think so. Listen for yourself.

If there is any more talk from the left about suspending elections, I think we should try a more rational solution: Rather than abandoning our commitment to freedom and democracy, let’s move the election forward — and VOTE NOW!

Investigating Planned Parenthood

Kudos to Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL). The chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee has launched an investigation of Planned Parenthood’s finances and its use of your tax dollars. It’s about time!

For years Planned Parenthood has thrived as liberal politicians made it a priority to fund the nation’s largest abortion provider with your tax dollars. Now the group is reeling as one state after another reprioritizes its spending in these tough times. Not surprisingly, cutting off Planned Parenthood is frequently at the top of the list.

Also not surprisingly, Democrats and Planned Parenthood are on the attack, accusing Stearns of being an extremist with an “ideological vendetta.” On the contrary, Rep. Stearns is merely looking out for the taxpayers’ best interests. The extremists are those on the left, including Barack Obama, who place such a high priority on funding the destruction of innocent life with taxpayer dollars.

My friends, let me remind you once again that this investigation would not be happening in Nancy Pelosi’s House. This is the difference a conservative majority can make for our values!

BREAKING NEWS: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie WILL NOT be a candidate for president in 2012. According to Fox News, Christie has made a “definitive, once and for all decision” against running for the White House next year.

WE NEED YOU!

In the items below you will read why it is so critical that we defeat Barack Obama and his socialist allies in Congress next year. (I hope we are making that clear in these reports every day.) But we can’t do it without your help!

“Our Worst Nightmare”

Months ago, Barack Obama relied on NATO to liberate Libya from Col. Qadhafi. It was a confused effort that resulted in various NATO members dropping out of the Libyan campaign. Then Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said, “This command-and-control business is complicated, and we haven’t done something like this kind of ‘on-the-fly’ before.” Now we’re learning what Obama’s “on-the-fly” foreign policy has gotten us.

We all knew that Qadhafi’s Libya was not an oasis of liberty. But conservatives and others warned that while we had no idea who would replace him, we did know that many of the Libyan rebels were sympathetic to Al Qaeda. Now ABC News reports that as many as 20,000 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles are missing in Libya — a scenario even left-coast liberal Barbara Boxer (D-CA) described as “Our worst nightmare.”

Have these missiles fallen into the hands of Al Qaeda terrorists? We don’t know. ABC reports that coalition forces are desperately trying to secure Libya’s borders as the White House scrambles to get a handle on the situation. The CIA and State Department are blaming each other for failing to secure these weapons. Meanwhile, Sen. Boxer is introducing legislation to equip 500 American passenger jets with anti-missile devices.

So how did that Libyan operation turn out?

ObamaCare Headed To High Court

Sinking in the polls, Obama is desperate to rally his base. He may have found a way. According to Politico, Obama has opted to skip an appeal to the full 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, sending the key anti-ObamaCare case directly to the Supreme Court. That means it is very likely that the high court will take up the case and issue a decision in the weeks before the 2012 election.

It may be a win-win for Obama. It is likely to be a 5-to-4 ruling either way. If the court strikes down ObamaCare, it may rally liberals against the five “conservative” justices who denied them the holy grail of Big Government. If the court upholds ObamaCare, then Obama has been vindicated and liberals will be fighting to defend the largest expansion of government since the Great Society.

This news underscores why conservatives MUST win this next election. Whatever the Supreme Court decides, this battle won’t be over. If the court strikes ObamaCare down, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid won’t give up their dream of socialized medicine. If the court upholds ObamaCare, a conservative Congress and a conservative president can repeal it in 2013.

EPA Demands More Bureaucrats

Here’s one more reason why conservatives MUST win in November 2012: Obama’s EPA is demanding $21 billion and 230,000 more bureaucrats to enforce its planned regulatory regime.

The EPA is currently fighting a legal challenge to its authority to regulate the greenhouse gases of 14,000 businesses. If the EPA wins its case, more than six million businesses could be forced to comply with burdensome new rules and regulations. But in court filings, the EPA makes this astonishing claim:

“Hiring the 230,000 full-time employees necessary to produce the 1.4 billion work hours required to address the actual increase in permitting functions would result in an increase in Title V administration costs of $21 billion per year.”

Unemployed Millionaire Begs For Tax Hike

It started with Warren Buffett. Now affluent people all over America are begging Obama to raise their taxes. At least that’s what the liberal media would have you believe.

At a town hall meeting in California yesterday, Doug Edwards, one of Google’s many millionaires, told Obama that he was “unemployed by choice” because he was “lucky enough to live in Silicon Valley for a while and work for a small startup down the street here, that did quite well.” After that smug self-introduction, Mr. Edwards asked Obama, “Would you please raise my taxes?”

The media love it! “Another patriotic millionaire for higher taxes.” Don’t be fooled, my friends. Edwards is a liberal who has donated tens of thousands of dollars to Democrat politicians. If he wants to pay more, there is nothing stopping him from writing a big check to the IRS. But I suspect Mr. Edwards took full advantage of every deduction and tax credit he was entitled to.

That’s fine with me, but don’t ask that everyone else be forced to pay higher taxes just because you have some misplaced guilt about it. In fact, some Republicans are asking Warren Buffett to release his tax returns so we can see what kind of “tax avoidance” practices he is using to keep his tax rate low.

Personally, I would rather wealthy individuals like Edwards and Buffett donate their money to charity than have Big Government take more of their income and redistribute it to bankrupt green energy companies. I’d also prefer to see small business owners be allowed to keep more of their income to invest in growing their businesses. But if these limousine liberals keep complaining, perhaps Republicans should make an exception on their “no tax hike” pledge and raise taxes just on left-wing millionaires!

Raising Cain

Two developments this weekend have Washington insiders buzzing today. First is the poor showing of the GOP front-runners in Florida’s big straw poll. They are also buzzing about Herman Cain’s convincing first place showing in the straw poll. (Cain won 37% to Perry’s 15% and Romney’s 14%.)

The reason Cain’s win isn’t bigger news is because many analysts believe his victory was mostly a “protest vote.” But the fact remains that there is considerable dissatisfaction among conservative grassroots activists with the current field of candidates.

Just a few weeks ago that dissatisfaction manifested itself in Michele Bachmann’s victory in the Ames, Iowa, straw poll. Then Rick Perry jumped into the race and Bachmann lost her momentum, seemingly in a matter of hours. But after Perry stumbled over Social Security and immigration, conservative activists signaled their dissatisfaction (so the argument goes) by raising Cain’s profile.

I think both Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain would make great presidents. But it is difficult to imagine a scenario in which either of them could put together the organizational machinery and the finances necessary to run a national campaign to win the Republican nomination. Bachmann recently lost her campaign manager, and Cain almost dropped out of the race — twice.

Now let’s go back to the presumed front-runners. Mitt Romney did not seriously compete for votes in the Florida straw poll, so his team is dismissing the results. Nevertheless, his 3rd place finish is a real warning sign for a candidate who has been running since 2007!

Perry did compete in the straw poll, however, and the collapse of his support was extraordinary — and was no doubt due to his debate performance, which got horrible reviews. Fox News commentator Brit Hume, no Washington liberal, said: “Perry really did throw up all over himself in the debate at a time when he needed to raise his game. …Perry is about one-half a step away from almost total collapse as a candidate.” Bill Kristol said Perry’s performance was “close to disqualifying.”

Here’s the bottom line: Perry needs to improve quickly. If he doesn’t, then Romney will regain his former status as the GOP front-runner, and it is an open question as to who would emerge to challenge him.

CNN released a poll this morning that was conducted after the Orlando debate. In it, Perry still leads Romney by seven points, but there was a 5-point swing in Romney’s favor since the last debate. Interestingly, the candidate who gained the most was Newt Gingrich, whose support doubled from 5% to 10%, while Herman Cain went from 5% to 7%.

For what it’s worth, this time four years ago, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson were leading the GOP field, and Hillary Clinton was leading Barack Obama by 16 points. In short, all the polls need to be kept in perspective as mere “snap shots” of the situation today — not as predictors.

Is Christie The Answer?

My good friend and astute political analyst Bill Kristol thinks New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is the answer to the GOP’s dilemma. Again, there is a lot to like about Christie. I particularly appreciate his direct style. He is quick on his feet and unapologetic about his positions. Having said that, he too would start out with significant problems.

Let’s take two issues as examples. From what I know, there is no evidence that Christie is any more conservative on immigration than Perry. Perhaps he would avoid calling conservatives heartless; but, substantively, I believe his views are similar. Christie also went out of his way last year to support the construction of a mosque near Ground Zero. That will go over like a lead balloon in Republican primaries.

I’m not suggesting Christie should not run; only that we need to temper our expectations. There is no perfect conservative candidate, and America cannot afford four more years of Obama — the damage would be irreversible. But someone has to convince us that he or she can rally the base and attract enough independent voters to beat Obama.

Obama’s Stimulus Plan — An Economic Drag

The Associated Press reported this weekend that Obama’s latest $500 billion stimulus plan — even if enacted immediately — would do little to lower the unemployment rate. Under the most optimistic scenarios, the plan creates fewer than 160,000 jobs a month. To significantly lower the unemployment rate, the economy needs to create at least twice that many jobs each month for at least three to five years.

But Mark Zandi, the Moody’s economist who modeled the economic forecasts of the plan, says his prediction was good only for one year — 2012. And after that? According to Zandi, “Beginning in 2013, and certainly into 2014, the plan is a drag on the economy because the stimulus starts fading away,” while Obama’s tax increases remain in place.

Let me repeat: Obama’s stimulus plan isn’t a real jobs plan — it is a reelection strategy built on class warfare. In three years, Barack Obama has morphed from the Herald of Hope to the Envoy of Envy. You can read more about that in my weekly column at humanevents.com.

Student Suspended For Faith

Last week I commented on Archbishop Timothy Dolan’s letter to President Obama warning of the immediate threat to religious liberty stemming from the militant homosexual rights movement’s radical demand to redefine marriage. This is not hyperbole.

Individuals have lost their jobs. Conservative organizations are facing “economic terrorism” from left-wing activists. Now students are facing suspension in the public schools if they speak up for their faith.

According to Fox News, a 14 year-old Christian honors student in Ft. Worth, Texas, was suspended for expressing his belief to a fellow student that homosexuality is wrong.

The teacher, who sent the boy to the principal’s office, reportedly has a history of pushing the homosexual agenda in his class. An attorney involved in the case told Fox that the teacher had posted a picture of men kissing and told the students that “homosexuality is just part of our culture now.”

Last time I checked, men and women of faith were still part of this culture too. While our friends at Liberty Counsel were able to get the school to back down this time, many on the left want to force faith into the closet while pushing homosexual indoctrination into the classroom.

Conservatives have warned for years that the left has no interest in tolerance, and that acceptance of same-sex “marriage” would lead to homosexuality being taught in the schools and the legalization of polygamy. We were dismissed as cranks. Now it’s happening.

Only one side can prevail in the culture war over the values we will teach to our children and grandchildren. I strongly believe the next election may well be the decisive battle in America’s culture war.

Debate Reaction

I have learned over the years that when I offer my thoughts on GOP debates, folks tend to read between the lines and often think they can discern who I am supporting. So before I offer a few comments about last night’s debate, let me reiterate: I am not endorsing any candidate at this time. My goal is to make sure we nominate the most conservative candidate who has the best chance of ending the Obama nightmare.

Having said that, I think Governor Perry, whom I like a lot, ran into another significant problem last night. In previous debates, it was Social Security. Last night it was illegal immigration, specifically his support of in-state tuition benefits for children of illegal immigrants.

Governor Perry obviously feels strongly about this issue. But when he accused fellow conservatives of being heartless, I doubt he won any votes. The polling on the issue is terrible — even in Perry’s home state.

A February poll by the University of Texas found that only 27% of respondents felt the children of illegal immigrants should be granted in-state tuition rates, while 59% believed they should pay out-of-state rates. It is a losing issue across the board. Consider these results:

  • Democrats were evenly split on the issue (43% each).
  • By a 24-point margin (55%-to-31%), independents said illegals should pay out-of-state tuition rates. And among Republicans, it was 74%-to-14%.
  • Even among ethnic minorities, Perry’s position failed to garner majority support — 46% of Latinos favored in-state tuition rates for the children of illegal aliens, but 38% opposed the idea. Among blacks, 36% were in favor, while 53% were opposed.

After the debate last night, Fox News pollster Frank Luntz discovered that his focus group members overwhelmingly felt that Romney had won the debate. Several changed their support from Perry to another candidate. One member of the focus group said his son wanted to attend Texas A&M but could not afford the out-of-state tuition rates. Perry’s position on in-state tuition for illegals drove this voter away.

On Washington’s biggest talk radio show this morning, most callers were lamenting Perry’s position on illegal immigration, saying they were looking for another candidate. And the reviews of conservative opinion leaders were not helpful either, as this summary illustrates.

In Perry’s defense, he has repeatedly called for more “boots on the border.” I believe he is sincere about controlling the border, albeit without a fence, which many conservatives view as essential. And, of course, he is a thousand times better than Obama, who is pro-amnesty.

As of now, the GOP nomination battle still looks like it is wide open.

Best “Plagiarized” Line Of The Night

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson (the pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-drug legalization libertarian) delivered the best line of the night when he said, “My next-door neighbor’s two dogs have created more shovel-ready projects than this president.” The audience roared with laughter and applause.

But it appears it wasn’t an original line. There are reports that Rush Limbaugh had said something nearly identical earlier in the day.

Mahmoud The Mad

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed the United Nation’s General Assembly yesterday. It wasn’t long before he once again exposed himself for the evil thug he is.

As he has done in past U.N. speeches, Ahmadinejad denied the Holocaust and suggested that there were “hidden elements involved in September 11.” He also mocked the U.S. for killing Osama bin Laden rather than bringing him to trial in order to “identify the elements behind the safe space provided for the invading aircraft to attack the twin World Trade Center towers.”

In other words, Ahmadinejad, a sworn enemy of the United States, is also a “9/11 truther.” Like so many Hollywood elites, he too believes that we attacked ourselves, that Osama bin Laden was innocent and that a trial would have exposed the truth.

Obama and his liberal allies insist we must rely upon the world community to achieve our foreign policy goals and defend our interests. One hundred ninety-three nations are represented at the U.N. General Assembly. Yet only a few dozen diplomats walked out in protest of Ahmadinejad’s disgusting remarks. That tells you all you need to know about the moral core of that so-called “world community.”

Obama Feels The Heat On Israel

President Obama spoke to the U.N. General Assembly yesterday. The speech was a “yawner,” significant for what he did not say rather than what he said. There was a lot of rhetoric about how bad poverty and nuclear weapons are. (I doubt Iran’s Ahmadinejad will be moved to end his nuclear weapons program.) Applause was polite, but nothing more. Obama’s habit of apologizing for America during his first three years in office has won us no new “friends” among the world’s assorted thugs and dictators.

Perhaps the most telling part of the speech was what Obama did not say about the Middle East conflict. There was no more finger wagging at our trusted ally Israel. He dropped the call for Israel to return to the indefensible 1967 “Auschwitz” borders. And he publicly acknowledged that Israel is surrounded by nations that have repeatedly waged wars against it.

What happened? Did Obama discover some new information on the threats Israel is facing that he did not know before? Of course not! What happened was the unmistakable evidence that voters who care about maintaining a strong Israeli/American alliance are abandoning Obama in droves.

Democrats lost a safe New York House seat they had held for over 80 years, largely over this issue. Groups like Christians United for Israel and the Emergency Committee for Israel, both of which I am proud to be a part of, have increased their grassroots efforts, and Obama’s knees buckled as a result. But make no mistake about it: If “O” gets a second term, he will return in a second to his habit of bashing Israel.

Dolan Defends DOMA

This week Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York sent a pointed letter to President Obama with a simple message: End your campaign against traditional marriage and religious liberty. I never imagined that such a letter would ever need to be written to the president of the United States.

Dolan’s letter was respectful, but he pulled no punches. The archbishop is particularly concerned by Obama’s Justice Department, which is claiming that supporters of the Defense of Marriage Act are motivated by “prejudice and bias.” The archbishop is right to warn against such claims, because equating traditional Judeo-Christian teaching with “prejudice and bias” will ultimately threaten religious liberty. Individuals are already losing their jobs due to an increasing intolerance of faith and common sense.

Archbishop Dolan also pointed out that President Obama has issued proclamations on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, writing that they demonstrated “a welcome conviction on your part that neither a mom nor a dad is expendable.” Dolan then added, “The institution of marriage is built on this truth… no other relationships provide for the common good what marriage between husband and wife provides. The law should reflect this reality.”

The archbishop concluded his letter with this warning: “The Administration’s failure to change course on this matter will … precipitate a national conflict between Church and State of enormous proportions and to the detriment of both institutions.”
I applaud Archbishop Dolan for speaking truth to power. You can read the full text of his letter here. In the days and weeks ahead, I hope other religious leaders will do the same and encourage their congregations to be active citizens who vote their values on Election Day!

Another Democrat Apologizes For America

The left-wing impulse to see America as a negative force was on display again. Last weekend, liberal Democrat Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) addressed the American Islamic College in Chicago. Rep. Quigley, who won a special election for Rahm Emanuel’s old House seat, warned his audience that when he got to Washington, he found an “ideological war.” Here’s an excerpt of his remarks:

“What’s worse is that when the economy is in this state people are angry, people are scared. …What you see, unfortunately, is those who create scapegoats, those who pit one group against the another. The easiest way to do that, I think, is to pit your interests against those that are different from you, those that perhaps you don’t understand or scare you. This is what I am witnessing every day.”
While that is a perfect description of Barack Obama’s economic plan and reelection strategy based on his recent class warfare rhetoric, Quigley was referring to his fellow countrymen. He went on to apologize to his Muslim audience, saying:

“I serve on the Judiciary Committee and discrimination comes in many forms, many shapes and many guises. You have my pledge to work with you to fight them. And I think it is appropriate for me to apologize on behalf of this country for the discrimination you have faced.”
Just days after the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, this Chicago liberal is apologizing to a group of Muslims “on behalf of this country.” For what? According to the FBI’s statistics, Jews are significantly more likely to report being victims of hate crimes than Muslims. Moreover, recent surveys have found that Muslim-Americans are happy in America today, with an overwhelming majority saying that life is better in America than in most Muslim countries.

Quigley is right about one thing: There is an ideological war raging today in America. On one side you have radicals, such as Quigley and Obama, who seek to fundamentally transform America and who are eager to apologize for our country. On the other side are those who believe that America is the “last best hope of man on earth.” Next November’s elections may be the decisive battle that determines which side wins this war.

Obama’s Bridge To Nowhere

Barack Obama is making his latest sales pitch for his $500 billion stimulus bill in Ohio today. The backdrop for Obama’s photo op is the Brent Spence Bridge, which connects Cincinnati, Ohio, and Covington, Kentucky. The selection of this bridge demonstrates just how cynically political this gang in the White House really is.

Obama says we must “pass this bill” now so that we can put people to work making critical repairs to our crumbling infrastructure. But as the Los Angeles Times points out, the Brent Spence Bridge is not in dire need of repair. In fact, there are plans to build a second bridge span to handle additional traffic flow — IN FOUR YEARS.

In other words, there are no “shovel ready” jobs at the Brent Spence Bridge. It was likely chosen because it gave Obama a chance to “slap” both Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Again, what Obama is offering is demagoguery, not leadership. America deserves better!

Tune In Tonight!

Nine Republican presidential candidates will take the stage tonight in Orlando, Florida, in a debate hosted by Fox News, Google and the Republican Party of Florida.

A new Quinnipiac University poll finds President Obama’s approval rating is just 39% in the Sunshine State, with 53% of registered Florida voters saying the president does not deserve a second term. In the race for the GOP nomination, Governor Rick Perry leads Mitt Romney by six points (28%-to-22%).

Tune in tonight at 9:00 PM ET.
