“Never Forget”

This weekend marks Memorial Day, a national observance first known as Decoration Day. It was meant to be a time to remember and honor our Civil War dead simply by decorating their graves. Over time, the holiday’s significance was extended to honor all those who paid the ultimate price for our nation. Now, as America is at war, Memorial Day also provides an opportunity for us to reflect on, and give thanks for, the sacrifices of our soldiers still in harm’s way.

We face many dangers today – jihadist attacks, a nuclear Iran, out-of-control deficits. But the greatest danger of all is one that doesn’t make many headlines – our collective national amnesia. Our history textbooks are sanitized to be politically correct and give our children virtually no sense of the greatness of the nation they live in.

In my talks at hundreds of high schools during the 2000 campaign, I was struck by how often decent American kids had nothing good to say about their country. Most had virtually no knowledge of the sacrifices made to establish and preserve their liberty. They are the recipients of the greatest freedom and opportunity that any society has ever produced; yet they are unaware of the price in flesh and blood that was paid for it.

In America today, Memorial Day weekend has become more of an occasion for rest and relaxation than for reflection about our heroes and the values they died to preserve. This weekend, I hope and pray that we can learn to do both – relax and remember. Let’s go the ballgame, have that picnic, hug our kids and have some fun at the beach.

But let’s also remind ourselves, and our children, about what happened at Concord Bridge, the fields of Antietam and the beaches of Normandy. Let’s explain to them why there was a Berlin Wall, what happened at Okinawa and the price that was paid to stop fascism and Soviet communism. The same resolve that allowed us to persevere in those conflicts will be necessary if we are to overcome our current challenges.

In short, with America facing so many dangers internally and externally, let’s take a moment this weekend to teach our children and grandchildren to love the things we love, and honor the things we honor. Finally, let’s remind ourselves as well as our children that all liberty is a gift from God and that each generation has paid in flesh and blood to preserve it.

For those of you who want a place to start, try reading to your kids and grandkids these words from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address:
“We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”

*Last year’s Memorial Day Message received such a tremendous response, we wanted to share it (with minor updates) with you again, but most especially with the folks who may be new to our work. Our next report will be Tuesday, June 1st. Thank you for all you do to make our work possible. I, and everyone at American Values, depend on and appreciate you more than you will ever know!

Shifting Strategy Misses Target

Yesterday counterterrorism advisor John Brennan unveiled Obama’s new security strategy. The new plan will focus more on homegrown radicals and domestic terrorism. Well, there’s no doubt that we’ve got a problem with radical Muslims in America. But, according to the Washington Times, “Mr. Brennan specifically said the Obama administration would no longer use the terms ‘Islamist’ and ‘jihadist’ ‘because jihad is holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam, meaning to purify oneself or one’s community.’”

Where is Brennan getting his information? As far as I know, Brennan has not converted to Islam, but he is holding himself up as an expert in that faith and allowing this rubbish to dictate our counterterrorism strategy. Can “jihad” at times mean a personal struggle? Sure. But throughout history, including today, it also has had another meaning that is extremely relevant to our national security.

Everyone knows that whenever a Muslim terrorist attacks us, he claims he to be committing an act of jihad. The jihadists often yell “Allhu akbar” – “Allah is great” – as they commit their evil deeds, just to make sure we don’t confuse them with disgruntled Baptists or Episcopalians. Perhaps Brennan isn’t aware of that fact.

Maybe Brennan should go ask the “humanitarians” at Palestinian Islamic Jihad exactly what they mean by the term “jihad.” Palestinian Islamic Jihad is dedicated to the destruction of Israel and no doubt believes that it is “purifying the community” when it blows up Jews and Christians. Perhaps he should talk to the countless Muslim religious leaders who are telling young Muslims today to kill the infidel – to wage jihad.

There are lots of things that the Obama Administration is doing wrong with respect to our values and the economy. But there is nothing more dangerous than the politically correct malfeasance that the White House is attempting to pass off as a national security strategy.

By the way, here’s one more example of the administration’s lack of seriousness. Yesterday, the State Department reassured the Mexican government that National Guard troops about to be deployed to the border will not be engaged in any efforts to enforce our immigration laws. That comes as Fox News reports that the Department of Homeland Security is warning Texas authorities that a suspected member of the Somalia-based Al Shabaab terrorist organization is believed to be traveling in Mexico and may attempt to cross into the U.S.

But wait – there’s more… While we’re arresting thousands of “other than Mexicans” coming across the border, and while the Department of Homeland Security is issuing terrorist watch warnings along the border, what are Senate Democrats doing about it? They blocked a Republican plan to send thousands more National Guard troops to help keep the terrorists out! Remember that, friends, when you go to the polls on November 2nd.

Our Whiny President

At a Democrat Party fundraising dinner in San Francisco this week, President Obama repeated a line that has become an administration theme recently in its attempts to deflect responsibility and justify its outrageous out-of-control spending. Obama whined, “Now, let’s face it, this has been as tough a year and a half as any year and a half in our history since the 1930s.” Really?

Does Barack Obama think he’s had it harder than FDR during the 1940s, when Pearl Harbor was attacked or when we lost thousands in the great battles of World War II? Does Obama think he’s had it harder than Harry Truman who had to decide to drop the atomic bomb or engage in Korea? Does Obama think he’s had it harder than John F. Kennedy, who starred down the Soviets in the Cuban missile crisis?

Does Obama think he’s had it harder than Ronald Reagan, who had to clean up after Jimmy Carter, and dealt with sky-high interest rates and even higher unemployment rates than today? Does Obama really think he’s had it harder than George W. Bush, whose presidency was transformed by the 9/11 terrorist attacks?

The president does have a point, though. It has been a tough year and a half — not for him but for millions of Americans who have had to contend with his policies. I’m thinking about the small business owners and entrepreneurs who are watching their taxes go up and can’t run their businesses without consulting thousands of pages of new regulations.

It’s been tough on the border communities who have suffered under an explosion of drug and gang related crime, while Obama ignored their pleas for help. It’s been tough on those who cherish our traditional values, as Obama has undermined marriage and forced us to pay for the destruction of innocent human life. It’s been tough for those who love America to watch as Obama has repeatedly apologized for America, coddled our enemies, offended our allies and worked relentlessly to “fundamentally transform” the nation we love.

It’s been tough, but I have hope – hope that change is coming in 159 days, when the American people rise up, go the polls and send a new generation of principled conservatives to Congress who will stop Obama’s socialism!

Sestak’s Scandal II

The Sestak scandal may be reaching a critical mass. Two of the nation’s leading newspapers, the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times are demanding answers from Sestak and the White House.

So too are leading Democrats like Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell and Senate Democrat Whip Dick Durbin. In addition, all seven Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder demanding the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate Sestak’s repeated accusation that the Obama White House offered him a bribe to get out of the Senate race.

Obama Borrows From Bush’s Playbook

It took him over a year, but President Obama finally ordered National Guard troops to help secure the southern border. Texas Governor Rick Perry had requested additional Guard troops in February 2009. In March, President Obama dismissed his request, saying, “I’m not interested in militarizing the border.”

So what changed Obama’s mind? Trust me, Obama doesn’t want to do this, but he’s reading the same polls you are. Americans are serious about border security. Unfortunately, Obama is not.

Why do I say that? News of the additional troops was first reported by a Democrat congresswoman from Arizona who had begged the White House for more help for her state. That tells you just how serious the situation really is. But all Arizona had gotten from the White House was contempt for its new law, which does what top Obama Administration officials are literally refusing to do – treat ILLEGAL immigration as a crime.

If the president were serious, he would have made the announcement before the cameras. And while the president is so interested in reaching out and talking to our enemies, he reportedly failed to share the news about the National Guard deployment with Arizona’s Republican Governor Jan Brewer. Later in the day, a White House aide released a written statement confirming reports of the deployment.

The last time we did this was during the Bush Administration in 2006, and it was done for the same reason: to make the president look tough in order to pave the way for a quasi-amnesty bill in Congress. The last time it was done, Guard troops were unarmed and used in largely supportive roles. This time, the Associated Press reports, “The administration’s plans appear to use Guard troops only in a supporting role.” Other reports suggest that the Guard troops won’t be allowed to tackle serious issues like drug smuggling and human trafficking.

Here’s an example of Obama’s lack of seriousness: House Republicans have been forced to introduce legislation to clarify that national security overrides environmental concerns on the southern border. To most Americans, I’m sure that’s just common sense, but we’re talking about the federal government.

Believe it or not, large areas of the border are “no go zones” for the Border Patrol because federal bureaucrats “have asserted that the Wilderness Act of 1964 trumps border security legislation passed by Congress.” As commander-in-chief, President Obama could fix that with an executive order, but so far he has not.

And what about the fence? If the president were serious about border security, not to mention putting a lot of unemployed construction workers to work, here’s one great infrastructure program that would enjoy broad public support: building the fence!

The Fundraising Must Go On

While the Obama White House is starting to get blowback for the government’s handling of the Gulf oil spill, Politico reported yesterday that Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson was planning on attending a fundraising event in Manhattan next week for the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee. After the story broke, Jackson abruptly cancelled, no doubt embarrassed by the appearance of “business as usual in Washington.”

Whatever the considerations that caused Jackson to rethink her attendance at political fundraisers during the crisis, they evidently were not persuasive enough for Barack Obama. After a testy lunch with Senate Republicans, Obama flew to San Francisco, where he headlined a fundraising dinner for Democrat Barbara Boxer. Can you imagine the media’s reaction if George Bush had attended fundraisers in the days after Hurricane Katrina?

Here’s something else to consider: The “clueless cowboy” George Bush visited the Gulf Coast eight times in the 42 days after Katrina hit. On Friday, it will be 39 days since the Gulf oil spill occurred, and Obama the Caring and Compassionate will make just his second trip to the region. This may be the only time I link you to the “Ragin’ Cajun,” but Democrat strategist James Carville is raging over the administration’s “unbelievable political stupidity.”

Sestak’s Scandal

While Rep. Joe Sestak has been basking in the glow of his upset primary victory over Senator Arlen Specter, the stench of scandal is starting to surround his candidacy.

During the race, Sestak, a former vice admiral, repeatedly stated that he had been offered a top job in the administration, perhaps Secretary of the Navy, if he would get out of the race and clear the field for Specter. The insinuation was that the Specter campaign was colluding with the Obama White House. It was politics at its worst, but Sestak was above it all. Even if Obama had been corrupted, Joe Sestak was running to change Washington. It worked. Joe Sestak, the honest admiral, prevailed over the entrenched incumbent politician.

Unfortunately for Sestak, the story isn’t going away. The fact is, Pennsylvania’s Democrat Senate nominee has accused the Obama White House of committing a felony – of attempting to bribe someone for the purpose of influencing a federal election. But Sestak has so far refused to identify which White House official approached him with the bribe. Speculation reasonably focuses on White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, a veteran operative of the Chicago/Clinton political machines.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs won’t answer questions about Sestak’s allegations, and the media are getting suspicious. If the answer were simple, Sestak and Gibbs would have put the issue to rest by now. The fact that it lingers suggests there’s more to it and that it could well be far more complicated.

Sestak has some explaining to do, and so does Obama. Both of them need to come forward with the whole truth. If Sestak refuses to disclose who in the Obama White House offered him a bribe, then he is complicit in concealing a crime and in the obstruction of justice. Stay tuned.

Obama’s Katrina

Something unheard of happened last night. The three major network news shows all took a critical tone toward the Obama Administration’s efforts (or lack thereof) to get a grip on the Gulf Coast oil spill. Some commentators are calling this “Obama’s Katrina.”

To prove it’s on top of the situation, the Obama Administration is sending Cabinet secretaries into the region on a regular basis. (We’ll know it is really serious when he starts sending in czars.) The White House also released a picture of President Obama on the phone with the governors of Gulf Coast states. But one Gulf Coast governor, Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal, is accusing the Feds of being part of the problem.

Specifically, Governor Jindal is furious that more federal resources have not been brought to bear in the clean-up and containment effort. Sixty-five miles of Louisiana coastline have been damaged by oil, which has penetrated as far as 10 miles into the Louisiana marshlands. Jindal is demanding that the federal government stop delaying the construction of artificial sand berms to block the oil’s advance. It’s been more than two weeks since the state submitted plans to build the berms, but they have been held up by bureaucratic red tape.

Meanwhile, administration officials are taking out their frustrations on British Petroleum, but the White House doesn’t have any solutions of its own. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar warned that they might “push BP out of the way.” Responding to that suggestion, Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen said, “To push BP out of the way, it would raise a question: Replace them with what?”

The Washington Post reports today that “Obama’s clenched jaw is becoming an increasingly familiar sight” for aides charged with keeping the president up-to-date on the spill. The Post reports that Obama yelled at one aide, “Plug the damn hole.”

Surely you can appreciate the president’s frustration. After all, he once said of his election, “…generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that … this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.” But the one who thought he could turn back the oceans and heal the planet can’t seem even to stop an oil spill.

Katrina became Bush’s hurricane and the Gulf disaster is becoming Obama’s oil spill. A Rasmussen poll released this morning finds that just 42% of likely voters approve of Barack Obama’s job performance. According to Rasmussen, “That is the lowest level of approval yet measured for this president.”

THIS Is How Congress Celebrates Memorial Day?

Like most Americans, members of Congress are looking forward to the Memorial Day holiday. But they’ve chosen an odd way to celebrate the occasion. There is breaking news that the House and Senate will vote this week to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy on open homosexuality in the military.

Even while unemployment remains at 10% or worse in many parts of the country, repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is a top priority for the Obama White House and congressional Democrats. But the Pentagon had requested that Congress not act until it had conducted a thorough review on the potential impact of repeal on the troops. That study is to be completed by December 1st.

Last month, Secretary of Defense Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen wrote to Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, urging that Congress wait for the feedback of our troops on the front lines. In their letter, Gates and Mullen stated bluntly:

“[We] strongly oppose any legislation that seeks to change this policy prior to the completion of this vital assessment process. …[we] hope Congress will not do so as it would send a very damaging message to our men and women in uniform that in essence their views, concerns and perspectives do not matter on an issue with such a direct impact and consequence for them and their families.”
Many House Democrats who represent conservative districts don’t want to vote on this issue until they hear from the troops. But fearing the results of the November elections, the radical Left won’t wait for the Pentagon’s December report. Sadly, it’s clear from today’s news that the White House and the Democrat leadership are taking their marching orders from the militant homosexual movement, while ignoring our military leaders and soldiers.

ACTION ITEM: Call Congress today at 202-224-3121. Tell your elected representatives to respect our troops and oppose any effort to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Fighting Back!

Three cheers for Rep. Tom McClintock! After Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s speech before a joint session of Congress, in which he attacked Arizona’s new anti-illegal immigration law, the California congressman took to the House floor to denounce Calderon’s “highly inappropriate” remarks. McClintock also condemned the Obama White House and congressional Democrats for cheering Calderon’s bashing of the 65% of America that favors the Arizona law. You can read a transcript of McClintock’s remarks or watch his speech here.

Campaign for Working Families is proud of our support for Tom McClintock. He was elected to the House in 2008 with our endorsement and strong financial backing. With your support, we’ll do everything we can in the next 161 days to elect more principled conservatives like Tom McClintock to Congress.

A Lawless Administration

John Morton, the Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, should be cleaning out his desk today and joining the ranks of the unemployed. Last week, in a meeting with the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune, Secretary Morton said that if his agency receives referrals of illegal immigrants from Arizona, his office would not necessarily “process” them.

Mr. Morton joins a long list of Obama officials who don’t like the Arizona law but haven’t read the law. He takes it a step further. If Secretary Morton doesn’t like a law, he apparently believes he can ignore it.

America is built on the rule of law. We have entered dangerous waters when an appointee of the Executive branch of government suggests his branch of government may ignore a duly passed law. When a government official embraces lawlessness, he is a threat to the Republic. Fire him now, Mr. President.

More on the Calderon/Obama Lovefest

It has been a few days now, but my outrage is growing, not receding, at last week’s unseemly display of Democrats cheering Mexican President Felipe Calderon as he bashed the good people of Arizona. President Obama joined Calderon in the bashing at the White House. In Congress, Democrats jumped to their feet to give a standing ovation to Calderon, who arrogantly abused our hospitality with his verbal assault.

By the way, Obama and his administration have failed to respond to repeated phone calls from Arizona Governor Brewer, who wants to tell the president what is in the immigration law that he has not read. Obama is constantly telling everyone he wants dialogue, but not one of the governor’s calls has been returned.

Obama doesn’t want to know the facts about the legislation – he wants to exploit it for political gain this November by scaring Hispanic voters, who are being intentionally misled, to the polls. Here’s an idea for the GOP. Get the videotape of these liberals in Congress giving Calderon a standing ovation. It won’t be hard to identify which representatives and senators were on their feet. Then run the video as an ad in the congressional districts of those members who responded so warmly to a foreign leader kicking America. The voters will take care of the rest by kicking them out office.

The Gospel According To Pelosi

Think of the three or four words that most aptly describe the Left, and the word “secular” would certainly be among them. So it’s interesting that whenever liberal politicians do find their religious voices they try to wrap their big government, socialist agenda in the adornment of Christianity. In my Human Events column last Friday, I argue that anyone who takes the Bible or Torah seriously should be cautious when they hear the Left’s appeals to faith. The only thing worse than a politician who ignores the Creator is one who shamelessly distorts His message for political gain. You can read my column here. Thank you.

Send Us Your Pictures

With Memorial Day and Fourth of July coming up, our nation is going to be celebrating the sacrifices of our fallen heroes, their families and our Founding Fathers. It’s vitally important that we remember our history and what was done to make America the world’s sole superpower.

Often I hear from folks who have a family member in the military or a close relative who has served. Please send us a photo and let us know where they are serving. You can mail a picture to the address below or use this link to e-mail the picture. We’ll post the pictures in our office, and we’ll pray for them each day.

Mexico And Obama vs. Arizona

Yesterday, I watched the disgusting spectacle of Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon condemning Arizona for its new anti-illegal immigration law from the White House Rose Garden. Worse yet, I watched as our own president not only didn’t defend his country – he joined Calderon in kicking Americans fed-up with illegal immigration and open borders. Did Obama forget for a second that he was President of the United States of America? Did Obama forget that it is his job to defend this country?

After his outrageous bows to the Saudi king and the Japanese emperor, and his repeated apologies for America to various audiences around the world, I would have thought that someone at the White House with some public relations sense would have spoken up and suggested that perhaps the immigration issue and Arizona’s popular new law ought to be avoided in public. Instead, the president continued the pattern of denigrating his own country in front of foreign leaders.

Unfortunately, Calderon wasn’t satisfied with bashing Arizona from the White House lawn. He did it again before a joint session of Congress today, at which point Vice President Biden, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democrat members of Congress all jumped up and offered a standing ovation! (The hypocrisy is unbelievable. Click here to learn how Mexico deals with illegal immigration.)

How out-of-touch can the political elites be? The overwhelming majority of the American people support Arizona’s law. It’s not about racism, but the rule of law and homeland security in a post-9/11 world.

By the way, the president repeated his solution to the problem of illegal immigration – he’s going to crack down on businesses who hire illegal aliens. So if you’re an employer and you know the brute force of Big Government is going to come down hard on you, what are you supposed to do? How are you supposed to tell whether a prospective employee is a legal citizen? That’s right – you will ASK FOR PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP – the very thing that has led Obama and so many liberal politicians to condemn the Arizona law!

“Rule Of Law” Cities

You’ve heard about the sanctuary cities that refuse to enforce our immigration laws. If you’re an illegal alien and can get to San Francisco, you’re home free. Here’s a new term I hope you’ll be hearing a lot more often – “Rule of Law” cities.

Costa Mesa, California, has elected officials who evidently understand that the oath of office they take requires them to enforce the laws of the United States. In response to the boycotts against Arizona, Mayor Alan Mansoor sponsored a resolution declaring Costa Mesa a “Rule of Law City.” Mansoor said, “I have a lot of concerns with cities calling themselves sanctuary cities. It’s important we state that we do not support illegal immigration.” His resolution passed 4-to-0.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if politicians that pander to leftwing amnesty activists would instead get pounded by folks like you demanding they stand up for the rule of law? Call your local mayor’s office and ask that your town declare itself a “Rule of Law City.”

Bashing Big Oil And Small Business

In their eagerness to bash British Petroleum, Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are considering legislation to dramatically increase the liability of companies that drill for oil offshore to $10 billion. I don’t think anyone doubts that BP should shoulder the clean-up costs of the Gulf Coast oil spill. BP has promised to pay all legitimate claims and it is reportedly offering Gulf Coast states tens of millions of dollars to help promote tourism.

But the liberal impulse to bash Big Business often has unintended consequences that punish small businesses in the process. In this case, by raising the liability of companies so high in their haste to punish BP, Democrats are guaranteeing that big companies like BP will be the only companies drilling in the Gulf because they’ll be the only ones who can afford to risk billions.

Few, if any, smaller oil companies will be willing to risk an accident that could subject them to billions of dollars in penalties. I wouldn’t be surprised in the days ahead to hear that BP and other big oil companies endorse the Democrats’ liability plan, because it will guarantee them a monopoly on offshore drilling. But the Left is so driven by its anti-free market ideology that it rarely allows basic commonsense economics to interfere with scoring political points.

End Of Day Report 05 19 10

I need your feedback on a difficult question.

You know as well as I do just how critical the November elections are. It is imperative that we make major gains in the elections in order to stop Obama’s socialism. We’ve got to make the most of every opportunity and the polls suggest that Barbara Boxer is vulnerable.

But in recent weeks, I’ve grown increasingly concerned about our chances in California. I continue to hear that conservatives are splitting their votes between Carly Fiorina and Chuck DeVore, allowing Tom Campbell – who is wrong on virtually every issue – to take the lead in this primary.

Right now, Campbell has a narrow advantage over Fiorina. Here’s how the candidates compare after averaging the results of ten primary polls conducted since October: Campbell 29%, Fiorina 22% and DeVore 11%.

My friends, I have to be honest with you: I don’t think Tom Campbell can beat Barbara Boxer. Campbell’s liberal positions on values issues will leave many conservative activists sitting on the sidelines. As you may know, Sarah Palin and a major pro-life PAC have endorsed Fiorina.

Chuck DeVore is a good man. I’d love to see him in Congress. Do you think he has a realistic shot at winning this primary? I fear the continued division among conservatives will hand the Republican nomination to Campbell, and in turn guarantee Boxer’s reelection.

What do you think? Given everything that is at stake this November, do you feel there is any value in trying to unite conservatives behind Fiorina? Please let me hear from you soon. Given the volume of email that I get, please use this link to reply so I can quickly identify your feedback.
