Our New Ad Hits Obama On Israel

As loyal readers of this report know, I am an unapologetic supporter of the state of Israel, and I have never been more concerned about the state of the U.S./Israeli alliance than I am today. As providence would have it, I was in Israel when Vice President Joe Biden was there – when the special relationship between America and Israel took a turn for the worse. In response, I organized an open letter to President Obama urging him to stop the attacks on our ally and focus on Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

Now we’ve decided to step it up a notch or two. Along with Tom Rose, former editor of the Jerusalem Post and co-host of the Bauer & Rose show, I’m pleased to launch a new project called “Keep Israel Safe.” The mission is simple: to expose President Obama’s treatment of Israel and rally American support for our ally. We’ve produced a hard-hitting ad that you can view here. We’re excited about this effort and we hope you will be too.

Obama Abandons Religious Freedom

President Obama is coming under fire for abandoning America’s commitment to religious freedom. That may not surprise you coming in the wake of the Pentagon’s decision to cancel Franklin Graham’s speaking invitation at a National Day of Prayer event. But the source of the criticism – Obama’s State Department – makes it newsworthy.

In 1998 Congress established the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom to combat religious persecution in other countries. It works in conjunction with the Office of International Religious Freedom in the State Department, which is headed by an Ambassador-at-Large. According to reports, the Commission’s chairman, Leonard Leo, is chastising the Obama White House for being “insufficiently engaged” on the issue.

Among Leo’s concerns is that nearly a year and a half into the president’s term, Obama has yet to name the Ambassador-at-Large to head the Office of International Religious Freedom. Leo is also concerned about the apparent shift in the administration’s emphasis from religious freedom to freedom of worship. For example, Catholics in China are free to worship in Catholic churches, but those churches are not free to practice their faith without interference from the communist regime. Individuals in Muslim nations are free to worship Allah, but they are not free to worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

THIS Is The Model?

With cap and trade energy tax hikes likely to come up for a debate in the Senate soon, I couldn’t help but comment on today’s news from Spain. How is Spain relevant to the Senate debate on cap and trade? Well, President Obama has repeatedly cited the Spanish experience with alternative energy as “a model for the creation of a green economy.”

By some estimates, Obama’s stimulus bill allocated $60 billion for green jobs. That’s a lot of green. So how’s that experiment in green jobs working for Spain? According to press reports today, the Spanish unemployment rate has surged above 20% — the highest unemployment rate in the 16-nation European Union.

It’s not surprising. A study released last year by the King Juan Carlos University in Madrid found that massive government subsidies for green energy jobs were causing significant job losses in other industries. And this is the model President Obama wants America to follow. Other studies (here and here) have concluded that cap and trade is a job killer.

If Obama and the radical environmentalists get their way, we may well get 20% unemployment too. A recent Harvard study found that achieving the administration’s proposed carbon emissions caps would cause gasoline prices to skyrocket to $7.00 a gallon. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what $7.00 a gallon gas would do to our economy.

See You In September

Recent headlines have highlighted the tremendous importance of men and women of faith being engaged in the public policy battles of the day. The National Day of Prayer was declared unconstitutional. The Supreme Court recently heard a case regarding whether Christian organizations must accept open homosexuals as leaders. (The decision could have serious implications for the Boy Scouts.) And, of course, the high court will soon have another vacancy. The list goes on.

With all the critical issues confronting our nation today, I hope you will join me in our nation’s capital, September 17th, 18th and 19th, for the Values Voter Summit. American Values is proud to co-sponsor this year’s Summit, along with our friends at the AFA Action, Family Research Council, the Heritage Foundation, Liberty University and Liberty Counsel.

Confirmed speakers include Rep. Michele Bachmann, Bill Bennett, Gov. Mike Huckabee, Star Parker, Phyllis Schlafly and many more. For more information, click here or call 1-877-372-2808 to register by phone.

Mahmoud’s Coming To America

Yesterday, the State Department confirmed that Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has requested a visa to come to the United States to attend the U.N.’s nuclear non-proliferation conference next month in New York. The request should be denied. There is no reason for the United States to host the Holocaust-denying, terror-sponsoring thug whose very presence would make a complete mockery of the conference.

Sadly, there’s no reason to think the Obama Administration will object to Ahmadinejad’s visit. Obama has repeatedly reached out to the tyrants in Tehran, while snubbing our allies and doing next to nothing to stop Iran’s nuclear weapons program. The administration might even try to spin Ahmadinejad’s visit as some kind of positive development.

What is definitely not a positive development is today’s news from the Washington Times that the administration is working behind the scenes to gut new congressional sanctions against Iran. The Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act targets foreign companies that “sell Iran gasoline or equipment to refine petroleum,” one of the regime’s greatest weaknesses.

The legislation is in the final stages of congressional approval, and at the 11th hour the White House is demanding exemptions that would benefit Russia and China – Iran’s biggest enablers. Russia built Iran’s Bushehr nuclear reactor, and China, according to a recent article in Jane’s Defense Weekly, is building a plant in Iran that will manufacture the Nasr-1 anti-ship cruise missile – a weapon clearly intended to threaten U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf.

Assault On Arizona Continues

A handful of congressmen held a press conference yesterday to again denounce Arizona’s new anti-illegal immigration law as a “violation of civil rights.” Liberal politicians from the president to city mayors are piling on. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome and Saint Paul, Minnesota, Mayor Chris Coleman have issued travel embargoes against the state for their cities’ employees. Other forms of “economic sanctions” are being discussed.

Coleman called the Arizona law “a dangerous example for the rest of the country,” and lawmakers in other states are considering similar measures. Reuters reports today that amnesty advocates “expect huge weekend rallies across the United States,” in the more than 70 cities for May Day protests.

Many on the Left are charging that the law will create a Nazi-like atmosphere with Arizona cops knocking down doors and demanding to “see your papers.” The argument is completely disingenuous. Current federal law already requires that all legal immigrants carry proof of their immigration status “at all times.” Here’s what the law says:

“Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him pursuant to subsection (d) of this section. Any alien who fails to comply with the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor…”

How can politicians and liberal commentators denounce a state for adopting and enforcing federal law? Regardless, their “enlightened” opinions are clearly disconnected from the common sense thinking of the American people.

New polling finds that 64% of Arizona voters support the law. Moreover, since she signed it, Governor Jan Brewer’s approval ratings have jumped 16 points. Two weeks ago her approval rating was 40%. Now she’s up to 56%. Nationally, 60% of American voters believe local law enforcement officials should be allowed to verify the immigration status of detained individuals.

States Lead On Life

Nebraska recently passed a law that bans late-term abortions after 20 weeks. The rationale for the law is the medical evidence that the unborn child can feel pain at that point. Like the debate over the gruesome procedure of partial-birth abortion, the Nebraska law highlights the humanity of the unborn child and everything that is wrong with Roe v. Wade’s pro-abortion regime. Medical science has advanced considerably since 1973; yet our laws have been painfully slow to catch up.

In Oklahoma, a new law allowing women the chance to view an ultrasound before an abortion took effect after the state Senate overrode Governor Brad Henry’s (D) veto. Ultrasound legislation also passed the Florida State Senate and cleared a key committee in the Louisiana legislature this week.

The pro-abortion movement is panic-stricken by the power of ultrasound laws. Kate Michelman, the former president of NARAL, recently complained to Newsweek that ultrasound technology “has clearly helped to define how people think about a fetus as a full, breathing human being.”

Media Discover Freedom Of The Press

We have often referred to the bullying tactics of this White House and its Chicago-style politics. There have been a number of conservative leaders, including Sarah Palin, who have used similar language, and inevitably they have been attacked for allegedly crossing the line and for using overheated rhetoric in criticizing the president.

Today, in a major article in Politico, members of the sympathetic media are making the same charges. The report states that despite their liberal leanings, the media’s relationship with the “thin skinned, “controlling” and “stingy” White House has turned “surprisingly hostile.”

More and more reporters are becoming disillusioned with Obama’s broken promises of transparency. When Press Secretary Robert Gibbs recently asserted, “This is the most transparent administration in history,” reporters in the briefing room broke out in laughter. Consider the following excerpt:

“Day-to-day interaction with Obama is almost non-existent, and he talks to the press corps far less often than Bill Clinton or even George W. Bush did. … The ferocity of pushback is intense. A routine press query can draw a string of vitriolic emails. A negative story can draw a profane high-decibel phone call – or worse. Some reporters feel like they’ve been frozen out after crossing the White House.”
Print a negative story and you’re screamed at with expletives? Imagine if the press wrote a negative story about George W. Bush (which happened virtually every day) and Karl Rove had picked up the phone and yelled profanities at the reporter. Do you think it would take a year and a half to hear about it? It would have been on the news that night. The offended reporter would have become an instant celebrity for defending freedom of the press against “the authoritarian Bush regime.”

I suppose we should be thankful that some journalists are slowly discovering that freedom of the press is more important than spouting spoon-fed talking points like loyal lap dogs. At the same time, the Obama Administration’s treatment of the media is yet another disturbing example of the Left’s intolerance for dissent. That’s just one more reason why we must work harder in the 188 days until the elections to restore balance to our government by taking back Congress.

The Cross Stays

Today the Supreme Court ruled that a cross erected in the Mojave National Preserve to honor our war dead does not have to be torn down. The case exemplifies the radical Left’s cultural jihad against our nation’s traditional values. (The Left’s intolerance of faith bears a striking resemblance to the Taliban’s intolerance of religious liberty.)

What makes the narrow 5-to-4 decision all the more extraordinary is that the cross isn’t on public land. In 2003, Congress authorized the Park Service to transfer the land to the Veterans of Foreign Wars — a private organization. But that wasn’t good enough for the ACLU and some liberal judges. In his opinion, Justice Anthony Kennedy expressed the frustration of millions of Americans when he wrote that the First Amendment “does not require eradication of all religious symbols in the public realm.”

Of course, Barack Obama’s first Supreme Court appointee, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, voted to tear the cross down. I have no doubt that Obama’s next appointee, who will be announced soon, will do so as well. Republican senators should make this case an issue during the confirmation hearings. Sonia Sotomayor was hailed as moderate and mainstream jurist. But the American people overwhelmingly reject the radical notion that the public arena must be purged of religious symbols.

Senators should ask Obama’s next high court nominee whether he or she believes the Constitution requires the “eradication of all religious symbols in the public realm,” and they should demand clear answers.

“A Crime To Be Illegal”

That’s the gist of the new Arizona law that has the liberal media and political establishments in apoplectic fits. Believe it or not, MSNBC actually ran a graphic with that “shocking” headline.

As George Will writes in today’s Washington Post, “Arizona’s law makes what is already a federal offense — being in the country illegally — a state offense.” So why all the outrage? The reality is that many liberal politicians support open borders and they are not bothered by illegal immigration. The federal government was not sufficiently enforcing the law, and they are outraged that Arizona just might.

Barack Obama condemned the law as “misguided” and warned that it threatened “to undermine basic notions of fairness.” Thousands took the streets in Arizona last weekend, and the protests are now spreading to other states as liberal politicians, amnesty advocates and the media frantically warn of racial profiling and Nazi-like police tactics. Never mind that the Arizona law “prohibits the use of race or nationality as the sole basis for an immigration check.” Arizona police can only conduct an immigration status check AFTER someone has been stopped for another offense.

Had other states had similar laws in place, 9/11 might have been prevented. Six of the 9/11 hijackers were here illegally and three of them had been pulled over by police for traffic violations, including ringleader Mohammad Atta. The Left’s hysterical reaction to common sense speaks volumes.

But what is most disturbing to me is that, once again, people in responsible positions in the media and in the Democrat Party know the facts but are choosing to use incendiary rhetoric to heighten racial tensions, causing the melting pot to boil over. First they suggested that Tea Party opposition to Obama’s socialism was racism. Now they are scaring Hispanics by telling them that Americans opposed to illegal immigration may be racists. The disgusting exploitation of racial fears for crass political purposes demonstrates just how little respect many on the Left have for their fellow Americans.

The Great Divider

Barack Obama first burst onto the national political scene in July 2004 when he addressed the 2004 Democrat National Convention. His impassioned oratory impressed all the commentators, particularly when he accused conservatives of dividing the country. Here’s what he said:

“Even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us – the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of ‘anything goes.’ Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America – there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America – there’s the United States of America.”
Obama’s theme of one America, an America that transcends race, inspired millions of people, particularly young voters. Sadly, his presidency has been marked not by unity but by division and by the demonization of those who oppose the president’s agenda. Obama and his allies constantly play the “race card,” setting one group against the other and constantly suggesting that racism is at the heart of the opposition to his socialist policies.

Even the liberal press corps here in town were surprised by the blatant race-based appeal Obama made yesterday in a YouTube video. One reporter referred to it as “unusual demographic frankness.” Obama said this: “This year, the stakes are higher than ever. It will be up to each of you to make sure that young people, African Americans, Latinos and women who powered our victory in 2008 stand together once again.”

Can you imagine the reaction if a conservative politician urged older people, whites and men to “stand together” in this year’s election?

“The Stakes Are Higher Than Ever.”

Barack Obama is literally begging his base to get out and vote because “the stakes are higher than ever.” There’s so much at stake for the Left that the Democrat National Committee recently announced that it is putting up $50 million to turnout Obama’s voters.

I shudder to think what might happen to our country if pro-family, pro-life, pro-free enterprise conservatives fail to respond and fail to make big gains in Congress this November. That’s one reason why I’m asking for your help in funding Campaign for Working Families’ efforts to target as many Obama socialists as possible.

Here’s the other reason: We Can Win! Even the liberal media is starting to panic. This weekend the New York Times did its best to sound the alarm with this headline, “Democrats’ Long-Held Seats Face GOP Threat.” Here are some excerpts:

“…nearly a dozen well-established House Democrats … are bracing for something they rarely face: serious competition. Their predicament is the latest sign of distress for their party and underlines why Republicans are confident of making big gains in November and perhaps even winning back the House. …

“In the Senate, Democrats are struggling to hold on to, among others, seats once held by President Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Democrats are preparing to lose as many as 30 House seats. …both parties agree that Republicans are within reach of capturing the 40 additional seats needed to win control.”
My friends, the stakes this year are higher than ever. You know that. At the same time, the wind is at our back this year. This is not the time to hold back or watch from the sidelines. Please step up to the plate today. Help us expand our target list so we can Stop Obama’s Socialism!

Harry’s In A Hurry

Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid is in a hurry to take up amnesty. Politico reports today that Reid “has accelerated the timetable on immigration reform and is planning to bring a bill straight to the Senate floor…” In other words, Reid is going to bypass the committee process in the hopes of catching the American public off guard.

Few think the legislation stands much of a chance. The last time immigration “reform” got a vote in the Senate was the summer of 2007, and the bill died 46-to-53. So why are we rushing to take on one of the most complicated and emotionally charged issues in this current atmosphere without the benefit of a full debate?

As Politico notes, “Many see pure politics in Reid’s push on immigration.” Democrats think the issue divides Republicans, while rallying the liberal base. Yet the breakdown of the 2007 vote revealed just how divisive the issue was for both parties. Thirty-five Democrats supported the bill along with 11 Republicans. But 16 Democrats voted against it as did 37 Republicans.

This year, Reid could probably expect to get just a handful of GOP votes at best – especially if he short circuits Senate rules and brings to the Senate floor yet another massive bill that no one has read. And what does he plan to do about the 16 Democrats who voted no in 2007?

Stand With CWF Today!

This morning, we released our initial target list for the 2010 elections. We’re targeting three weak Senate Democrats and 22 vulnerable liberals in the House. At the top of that list is Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid.

This weekend, Reid described ObamaCare as, “The most important thing we’ve done for the country and the world.” Guess what, Harry? A new Rasmussen poll finds that 60% of likely voters believe that ObamaCare will lead to increased federal spending (they’re right!), and 58% of likely voters want it repealed.

The only way we can do that is to defeat Harry Reid and as many leftists as we can! For every $50,000 we raise, we can add another vulnerable liberal to our target list. (Rasmussen also released new polling data on one of the races on our target list and the GOP candidate is up four points over the 18-year incumbent Democrat!) Right now I need you to go https://www.cwfpac.com/cwf_contribution.php and be as generous as you can so we can expand our target list. Thank you, my friends!

“God Bless The United States Of America”

Barack Obama took a break from his vacation in Asheville, North Carolina, this weekend to visit with Billy Graham and his son Franklin Graham. The meeting between the president and one of America’s most beloved families comes just days after the Pentagon, staffed with Obama’s leftwing appointees, rescinded Franklin Graham’s speaking invitation to a National Day of Prayer event. Obama could have easily reversed that decision, but he didn’t.

Instead, he reportedly promised that his administration would appeal a leftwing judge’s decision declaring the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional. What a joke! Obama has shown hostility to the observance from the moment he entered the White House.

Obama then flew to West Virginia to comfort the families of the miners killed in the tragic Big Branch Mine explosion. The families surely need comforting right now. But during the 2008 campaign Obama described these kinds of working class, rural folks as “bitter” and “clinging to their guns and religion.”

I’m glad Obama had a chance to talk to Franklin Graham and to pray with him and his father, Billy. But why do I have this gnawing feeling that Obama’s meeting with the Graham family had more do with political damage control? I appreciate that the president went to West Virginia to express his condolences to the victims’ families. But why do I feel like Obama is clinging to these families as his popularity plummets in middle America?

Obama closed his remarks at the funeral for the 29 miners by saying, “God bless our miners. God bless their families. God bless West Virginia. And God bless the United States of America.” The irony is striking. If Obama gets his way on judicial appointments, it won’t be long before liberal judges completely eliminate Judeo-Christians values from the public square.

That’s not hyperbole, friends. Already judges are trying to rip “under God” out of the Pledge of Allegiance, banning the Ten Commandments from public property and declaring the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional. Obama is playing the same judicial shell game that the Left has been playing for years – saying all the right things in public and letting the judges do his dirty work.

What Would They Do Differently?

There were several big leftwing demonstrations this weekend in Arizona in protest of the state’s tough new anti-illegal immigration law. In no time at all the demonstrations devolved into violence. At the state’s capitol of Phoenix, riot police had to be called in. One man who expressed the view that illegals should leave the country was attacked, and the police who tried to protect him were assaulted. Every news story I saw on the demonstrations completely ignored the violence.

Closer to home, there was a rally for Earth Day on the Washington mall that was attended by thousands. Many were average folks, but many were also down right bizarre. Reporters did not rush down to D.C. to stick cameras in the faces of those dressed as Mother Gaia or to ask complicated public policy questions. (Gee, why not?)

Tea Party rallies have no violence, no arrests. Yet the liberal media tries to invent hatred and violence where none exists. The Tea Party supporters are largely middle class and well-educated. Yet the liberal media mocks them as ignorant. Meanwhile, it portrays illegal aliens and their radical supporters as victims of American bigotry, while ignoring the violence committed by favored leftwing activists.

If you were trying to construct from scratch a media that was hostile to the values shared by most Americans, determined to promote a radical agenda opposed by most Americans and committed to “fundamentally transforming” America into something it is not, I don’t know what you would do differently from what today’s media elites are already doing.

Just like they were with socialized medicine, today’s elitist political and media establishments could hardly be more out-of-touch with the American people when it comes to immigration issues. Barack Obama strongly condemned Arizona’s new immigration law, and Democrats in the Senate appear set to push immigration reform to the front burner in short order. But a new Rasmussen poll finds that 60% of likely voters nationwide support the key elements of Arizona’s law.

I was most amused by Senator Chris Dodd’s (D-CT) suggestion that Congress had an obligation to pass comprehensive immigration “reform” because Arizona had acted to deal with the issue. Dodd said, “The idea that state-by-state [each state] would start developing its own immigration laws in the country — imagine what a patchwork that might look like.” Unfortunately, Dodd and most Democrats were not persuaded that a constitutional amendment was necessary to prevent a patchwork of states from redefining marriage.

I’ll have more thoughts in tomorrow’s report on why this issue is surfacing now.

Major Announcement Monday

My friends, recent headlines have highlighted the tremendous importance of the upcoming elections. Faith is under fire in our courts. The White House is clueless on Iran. And the agenda on Capitol Hill includes the confirmation a new liberal Supreme Court justice, massive new energy taxes, a massive new amnesty bill and appeasing the militant homosexual movement. I don’t think the stakes this November could get any higher.

In 193 days, we will get our chance to bring balance to government and restore common sense to Congress. On Monday, I’ll be making a major announcement about CWF’s plans in the days and weeks ahead. Stay tuned!

Schumer Awakens From His Slumber

New York Senator Charles Schumer, a loyal and liberal Democrat, fired a warning shot at the White House yesterday. Referring to the Obama Administration’s treatment of Israel, Schumer said, “This has to stop.” Schumer was interviewed on a New York radio show and said, “I told the President, I told Rahm Emanuel and others in the administration that I thought the policy they took to try to bring about negotiations is counter-productive. …Palestinians don’t really believe in a state of Israel.”

Schumer blasted the State Department’s “terrible” suggestion that American support for Israel depended on “the pace of [peace] negotiations.” Schumer said, “That is the dagger because the relationship is much deeper than the disagreements on negotiations, and most Americans — Democrat, Republican, Jew, non-Jew – would feel that.”

Senator Schumer also warned, “…right now there is a battle going on inside the administration, one side agrees with us, one side doesn’t, and we’re pushing hard to make sure the right side wins…”

There isn’t much that Chuck Schumer and I agree on. But on this issue New York’s senior senator and I wholeheartedly agree. America and Israel share a common bond, face the same Islamofascist enemy and must stand united. I will never abandon the Jewish state, and I will continue to speak out against the evils of anti-Semitism and Islamic jihadism.

ObamaCare = Higher Taxes & Broken Promises

The Obama White House got slammed yesterday by two government agencies charged with analyzing the costs of ObamaCare. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported yesterday that the healthcare “reform” legislation will not, as President Obama repeatedly promised, reduce healthcare costs. To the contrary, it will “increase national health care spending by $311 billion” over the next decade.

Previously, anyone who said that more government intervention would lead to higher costs was accused of making “bogus” and “wild” claims. But according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, it was Barack Obama who was making bogus claims.

In addition, the Congressional Budget Office reported that fines stemming from the individual mandate would raise nearly $4 billion in tax revenue in one two-year period. But the CBO also noted that 76% of those affected by the individual mandate to purchase health insurance will make less than $120,000 a year.

As Senator Charles Grassley explained, “The mandate is a tax increase that hits middle-class America the hardest. And these people make less than $250,000, which breaks the president’s pledge to not raise taxes on individuals earning less than $200,000 and families earning less than $250,000 a year.”

Whether it’s Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton or Barack Obama, the liberal agenda never changes. It always ends in broken promises, bigger government, higher taxes and increased spending.

The Phantom Tea Party Threat

Great minds think alike. Today, Rush Limbaugh has a column in the Wall Street Journal taking on Bill Clinton and the angry Left. In my Human Events column today, I tackle the same topic, but focus on the liberal paranoia about the Tea Party movement. The Left can’t decide whether the Tea Party movement is over-hyped or a profound threat to our nation’s security.

There is no evidence that enthusiastic criticism of Obama administration policies will lead to violence. In fact, the Tea Party movement is a result–not a cause—of the frustration and anger many Americans feel today. The only threat it poses is to the status quo of big government activism. You can read and comment on my piece at http://www.humanevents.com.

Words Matter

During the 2008 campaign, Barack Obama got very defensive when Hillary Clinton suggested he was an empty suit running on just words and hopeful rhetoric. He gave a blistering speech, saying, “Don’t tell me words don’t matter,” and then offered some of the most inspiring quotes from American politics, like “We hold the truths to be self-evident…” It was a very effective rhetorical retort.

Given Mr. Obama’s understanding of just how important words are, and the Left’s accusations that conservatives are guilty of sedition, today’s Wall Street Journal took the president to task for his own use of over-the-top rhetoric aimed at demonizing certain segments of America. Here’s a sampling of what the Journal described as “Obama’s ad hominem method and the politics of polarization:”

* In December the president lashed out at the banks, saying that he “did not run for office to be helping out a bunch of fat cat bankers on Wall Street.” He went on to accuse them of causing the financial crisis. Government intervention with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac caused the crisis, not the banks.

* When AIG paid bonuses in 2009, Obama had a fit, saying, “This is a corporation that finds itself in financial distress due to recklessness and greed. How do they justify this outrage…” We later learned that the Democrat-controlled Congress protected the bonuses in the stimulus bill.

* When the government tried to take over Chrysler and bondholders objected, Obama vilified them, saying, “a small group of speculators were hoping that everybody else would make sacrifices, and they would have to make none.” They simply wanted their legal contracts to be honored.

* And, of course, with the healthcare debate, the president threatened to “call out” anyone who was making “bogus,” “wild” or “false” claims against his socialized medicine bill.

I realize that “Big Oil,” “fat cat bankers” and health insurance companies make easy political piñatas. Demonizing business may be an easy way to score points with hard-left activists, but our economy depends on a thriving free market. And these industries employ many Americans, good and decent people who are paying their taxes and working hard to support their families. The president should work a little harder on providing hope and inspiring Americans, rather than bashing businesses and playing the politics of envy and class warfare.

A Nation Gone Under?

The assault on America’s religious heritage continues. The Army admitted yesterday that it might rescind Franklin Graham’s invitation to speak at a Pentagon National Day of Prayer event. According to the Associated Press, “Muslim employees at the Pentagon were offended by the invitation.”

In response to this news, National Day of Prayer Chairman Shirley Dobson issued a statement, saying, “It is time to say, ‘Enough is enough.’ America is engulfed in bloody wars on two fronts, where men and women are fighting and dying for the cause of liberty. They need, and deserve, the prayers of people of faith during their time of sacrifice. We … ask the American people to defend the right to pray in the Pentagon… We can be silent no more.”

Yesterday, Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA) organized a press conference attended by more than two dozen members of Congress in defense of the National Day of Prayer. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA), a co-sponsor of the bill Ronald Reagan signed designating the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer, said, “What brings us together today is a misguided court decision which threatens the longstanding tradition of this country. I urge the Obama administration to appeal this decision and to dedicate the best and brightest minds of the Justice Department to this case.”

Today, the Justice Department announced that it would appeal the decision. As Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) said, “What’s next? Declaring the federal holiday for Christmas unconstitutional?” Unfortunately, this is the same Justice Department that has called for the Defense of Marriage Act to be overturned and that dropped the 2008 voter intimidation case against the Black Panthers.

When the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia reached an impasse, Benjamin Franklin exhorted the delegates to prayer. Ronald Reagan warned us, “If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”

My friends, Shirley Dobson is right. Men and women of faith must speak up and get involved in the public policy debates that are impacting our liberty. And that means getting involved in the political arena. The Left sees politics as its religion and government as its god. Liberals are literally tithing to scores of leftwing candidates and causes. They get it. Our side needs to engage in the culture war because only one side can win. Are you ready to get involved?
