The Black Muslim Threat
There are new developments today in the aftermath of an FBI raid in Detroit targeting members of a revolutionary Black Muslim group called the Ummah. Killed in the raid on Wednesday was Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who died when he refused an FBI order to drop his firearm. Abdullah’s son, who had been described by the FBI as “armed and dangerous,” was arrested by Canadian authorities yesterday. Two other suspects remain at large.
Disturbingly, local Muslim leaders continue to defend the imam and blame the FBI. Detroit police have stepped up security at several precinct headquarters after the FBI warned that sympathizers of Imam Abdullah could attempt to hit back at law enforcement officials in retaliation.
The deadly raid has also caused “ripples” in Standish, Michigan, a community that may be selected to house 200 Muslim jihad suspects that the Obama Administration wants to bring to the U.S. as the prison at Guantanamo Bay is closed. Standish is only a couple hours drive from Detroit/Dearborn, which boasts the heaviest concentration of Muslims living in America. No one can say with certainty how much radicalism has spread in that community, and many families in Standish are fighting the proposal to turn their community into a possible target for Islamofascists.
You would think all of this would be big news, but the major media outlets continue to “spike” stories of a jihadist threat inside the U.S.
Pelosi’s Plan Unveiled
Yesterday, on the steps of the Capitol, Nancy Pelosi and her liberal colleagues unveiled their healthcare plan, H.R. 3962, just in time for Halloween. And, trust me, it’s scary. Here are my thoughts on what transpired at the press conference, and the content of the bill.
* Pelosi’s press conference was an hour long, and only people on her personal “RSVP list” were allowed to attend. Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) said, “The striking thing that occurred today is when the Speaker had her announcement and unveiled their public option, she did so on public grounds in the West Front of the Capitol and frankly denied access to the public.”
* The thirty Democratic members with Pelosi at the press conference did not answer a single question from the press.
* The bill has had an extra thousand pages of statist policy added, making it nearly 2,000 pages long. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), chairman of the House Republican Study Committee, said, “So how much takeover can you cram into 2,000 pages? By comparison, the legislation that created Medicare and Medicaid in 1965, which costs us $800 billion annually was less than 300 pages long.” What is hidden in the Pelosi bill?
* Members of Congress are not required to enroll in the government plan. The bill says that members can enroll in the public option if they want. Don’t expect any of them to do this, however.
* A 2.5 percent tax on medical devices will also be passed on to Americans. Taxes on hearing aids, heart valves and wheelchairs will all increase and will hurt Americans regardless of income.
* Under this version, working-class families will face higher health care premiums. Millions of Americans will also lose their current plans and senior citizens will see Medicare cut by $500 billion.
Folks, our worst nightmare could be coming true — a government takeover of the healthcare industry. The word “report” appears 364 times in the bill, while “shall” is used 3,425 times. This can only mean that a lot of new mandates will be imposed.
Now is the time to take action. The House will be voting on this bill soon, so I strongly encourage you to contact your representatives at 202-224-3121. Call even if you have already done so, and tell them “no” to PelosiCare. The liberals in Washington are trying to transform the United States in their Big Government image. Now is the time to turn up the pressure.
The Cloud Over Congress
While celebrating the Democrats’ takeover of Congress on election night 2006, Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi promised the American people “the most honest, most open and most ethical Congress in history.” Oops! A leaked report from the House Ethics Committee is causing heartburn throughout Washington today. According to the memo, dozens of House members (mostly Democrats from what we can gather) are under investigation.
According to the report, several Democrats (Norm Dicks, Peter Visclosky, Jim Moran and Marcy Kaptur) on a key Appropriations committee are under investigation, as is the committee’s chairman Rep. Jack Murtha (D-PA). In another revelation, the Ethics Committee suspended an investigation of Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-WV) at the request of the Justice Department. The Washington Post reports, “the department’s request … suggests that the case continues to draw the attention of federal investigators, who often ask that the House and Senate ethics panels refrain from taking action against members whom the department is already investigating.”
You can add two more names to the list. Yesterday, the House Ethics Committee voted to launch investigations of Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Laura Richardson (D-CA). It also took action on an investigation of Missouri Republican Sam Graves – voting to end the Graves’ probe “after finding no ethical violations.” We’re still waiting for any action in response to the outrageous tax evasion of Charlie Rangel (D-NY), who chairs the House committee responsible for writing the nation’s tax laws.
My friends, I’ve got some good news to report today. Doug Hoffman, the CWF-endorsed Conservative Party candidate, is surging in the polls in the special election for New York’s 23rd Congressional District. Last week, two independent polls commissioned by conservative groups showed Hoffman moving up. Within days, the Democrat national party launched ads attacking just Hoffman and totally ignoring the liberal Republican candidate. Now we know why.
The leftwing Daily Kos is doing its own polling, and here’s what it found: The Democrat candidate is at 33%, down from 35% one week ago. Hoffman is at 32%, up from 23%. And the liberal Republican is at 21%, down from 30%. The Daily Kos concluded, “If Scozzafava’s fade continues, Hoffman will win this thing. Democratic chances hinge on halting the Hoffman surge, which is why the [Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee] has trained its guns on the conservative party candidate.”
I’m equally encouraged by the fact that at least a dozen congressional Republicans, many strong conservatives also supported by CWF, have announced their support of Doug Hoffman in recent days – folks like Sen. Jim DeMint, Reps. Steve King, Michele Bachmann, Trent Franks, Todd Akin and Tom McClintock. And Politico reports today that the GOP leadership is having second thoughts. NRCC Chairman Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) said yesterday that Hoffman “would be very welcome, with open arms.” The Republican Party will stand by its candidate, but I’ve been around Washington long enough to know that Sessions is sending a message to Republicans voters in the 23rd District – “It’s okay to vote for Hoffman.”
Obama And The Abolition Of Marriage
Barack Obama was the candidate of “hope and change.” His pronouncements and appointments are bringing hope to radicals around the country as he promises to change the values that have defined our culture and our country since its founding. One of Obama’s most disturbing changes may come not just in the redefinition of marriage, but in the abolition of marriage. You can read my thoughts on this subject in my weekly Human Events column at http://www.humanevents.com.
