The Black Muslim Threat

There are new developments today in the aftermath of an FBI raid in Detroit targeting members of a revolutionary Black Muslim group called the Ummah. Killed in the raid on Wednesday was Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who died when he refused an FBI order to drop his firearm. Abdullah’s son, who had been described by the FBI as “armed and dangerous,” was arrested by Canadian authorities yesterday. Two other suspects remain at large.

Disturbingly, local Muslim leaders continue to defend the imam and blame the FBI. Detroit police have stepped up security at several precinct headquarters after the FBI warned that sympathizers of Imam Abdullah could attempt to hit back at law enforcement officials in retaliation.

The deadly raid has also caused “ripples” in Standish, Michigan, a community that may be selected to house 200 Muslim jihad suspects that the Obama Administration wants to bring to the U.S. as the prison at Guantanamo Bay is closed. Standish is only a couple hours drive from Detroit/Dearborn, which boasts the heaviest concentration of Muslims living in America. No one can say with certainty how much radicalism has spread in that community, and many families in Standish are fighting the proposal to turn their community into a possible target for Islamofascists.

You would think all of this would be big news, but the major media outlets continue to “spike” stories of a jihadist threat inside the U.S.

Pelosi’s Plan Unveiled

Yesterday, on the steps of the Capitol, Nancy Pelosi and her liberal colleagues unveiled their healthcare plan, H.R. 3962, just in time for Halloween. And, trust me, it’s scary. Here are my thoughts on what transpired at the press conference, and the content of the bill.

* Pelosi’s press conference was an hour long, and only people on her personal “RSVP list” were allowed to attend. Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) said, “The striking thing that occurred today is when the Speaker had her announcement and unveiled their public option, she did so on public grounds in the West Front of the Capitol and frankly denied access to the public.”

* The thirty Democratic members with Pelosi at the press conference did not answer a single question from the press.

* The bill has had an extra thousand pages of statist policy added, making it nearly 2,000 pages long. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), chairman of the House Republican Study Committee, said, “So how much takeover can you cram into 2,000 pages? By comparison, the legislation that created Medicare and Medicaid in 1965, which costs us $800 billion annually was less than 300 pages long.” What is hidden in the Pelosi bill?

* Members of Congress are not required to enroll in the government plan. The bill says that members can enroll in the public option if they want. Don’t expect any of them to do this, however.

* A 2.5 percent tax on medical devices will also be passed on to Americans. Taxes on hearing aids, heart valves and wheelchairs will all increase and will hurt Americans regardless of income.

* Under this version, working-class families will face higher health care premiums. Millions of Americans will also lose their current plans and senior citizens will see Medicare cut by $500 billion.

Folks, our worst nightmare could be coming true — a government takeover of the healthcare industry. The word “report” appears 364 times in the bill, while “shall” is used 3,425 times. This can only mean that a lot of new mandates will be imposed.

Now is the time to take action. The House will be voting on this bill soon, so I strongly encourage you to contact your representatives at 202-224-3121. Call even if you have already done so, and tell them “no” to PelosiCare. The liberals in Washington are trying to transform the United States in their Big Government image. Now is the time to turn up the pressure.

The Cloud Over Congress

While celebrating the Democrats’ takeover of Congress on election night 2006, Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi promised the American people “the most honest, most open and most ethical Congress in history.” Oops! A leaked report from the House Ethics Committee is causing heartburn throughout Washington today. According to the memo, dozens of House members (mostly Democrats from what we can gather) are under investigation.

According to the report, several Democrats (Norm Dicks, Peter Visclosky, Jim Moran and Marcy Kaptur) on a key Appropriations committee are under investigation, as is the committee’s chairman Rep. Jack Murtha (D-PA). In another revelation, the Ethics Committee suspended an investigation of Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-WV) at the request of the Justice Department. The Washington Post reports, “the department’s request … suggests that the case continues to draw the attention of federal investigators, who often ask that the House and Senate ethics panels refrain from taking action against members whom the department is already investigating.”

You can add two more names to the list. Yesterday, the House Ethics Committee voted to launch investigations of Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Laura Richardson (D-CA). It also took action on an investigation of Missouri Republican Sam Graves – voting to end the Graves’ probe “after finding no ethical violations.” We’re still waiting for any action in response to the outrageous tax evasion of Charlie Rangel (D-NY), who chairs the House committee responsible for writing the nation’s tax laws.

Hoffman Surging

My friends, I’ve got some good news to report today. Doug Hoffman, the CWF-endorsed Conservative Party candidate, is surging in the polls in the special election for New York’s 23rd Congressional District. Last week, two independent polls commissioned by conservative groups showed Hoffman moving up. Within days, the Democrat national party launched ads attacking just Hoffman and totally ignoring the liberal Republican candidate. Now we know why.

The leftwing Daily Kos is doing its own polling, and here’s what it found: The Democrat candidate is at 33%, down from 35% one week ago. Hoffman is at 32%, up from 23%. And the liberal Republican is at 21%, down from 30%. The Daily Kos concluded, “If Scozzafava’s fade continues, Hoffman will win this thing. Democratic chances hinge on halting the Hoffman surge, which is why the [Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee] has trained its guns on the conservative party candidate.”

I’m equally encouraged by the fact that at least a dozen congressional Republicans, many strong conservatives also supported by CWF, have announced their support of Doug Hoffman in recent days – folks like Sen. Jim DeMint, Reps. Steve King, Michele Bachmann, Trent Franks, Todd Akin and Tom McClintock. And Politico reports today that the GOP leadership is having second thoughts. NRCC Chairman Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) said yesterday that Hoffman “would be very welcome, with open arms.” The Republican Party will stand by its candidate, but I’ve been around Washington long enough to know that Sessions is sending a message to Republicans voters in the 23rd District – “It’s okay to vote for Hoffman.”

Obama And The Abolition Of Marriage

Barack Obama was the candidate of “hope and change.” His pronouncements and appointments are bringing hope to radicals around the country as he promises to change the values that have defined our culture and our country since its founding. One of Obama’s most disturbing changes may come not just in the redefinition of marriage, but in the abolition of marriage. You can read my thoughts on this subject in my weekly Human Events column at http://www.humanevents.com.

Black Muslim Raids

For two years the FBI has been conducting an undercover investigation of a group called Ummah (the brotherhood) made up mostly of African American converts to Islam. Ummah’s goal is to establish Sharia-law within the United States by any means necessary.

On Wednesday, the FBI raided several Ummah facilities, made a dozen arrests and killed an “imam,” Luqman Ameen Abdullah in a shoot-out when he refused to surrender.

Abdullah was a hate-filled jihadist. A 43-page federal indictment released last night gives chilling details of what this thug was doing at his mosque in Detroit, Michigan. He taught his radical congregation that criminal acts were acceptable if they advanced Islam. He told them it was imperative for them to support Al Qaeda, the Taliban and Hezbollah and that the goal was to force all infidels (us!) to live under Muslim rule.

It is amazing that, eight years after 9/11, this jihadist was preaching his hatred and revolutionary doctrine in the heartland of America. It would be foolish to believe this is the only mosque where sedition and hatred are being promoted.

Almost as disturbing as this news was the reaction to the arrests and shoot-out by the leadership of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations). CAIR is continually presented as “moderate” by big media and by the Obama Administration. Dawud Walid, head of CAIR’s Michigan branch, immediately defended Abdullah, calling him a “respectable imam in the Muslim community,” and cited his work with the homeless.

Then, unbelievably, Walid said he and other imams plan to complain to the FBI because the Bureau repeatedly mentioned Islam in their indictment. Walid said that when other people are arrested their faith isn’t relevant.

Well, Walid, when someone is an average thug their faith or lack thereof isn’t usually relevant. But when an imam uses the Koran to inspire fellow Muslims to overthrow the government and enslave non-Muslims, radical Islam is central to the case. If there are any “moderate” Muslims in Detroit/Dearborn – it is your move. The microphone is open. The cameras are ready. Will you condemn these murderers in your midst?

Here Come The Cuts

There are some political realities as certain as death and taxes. Here are two: Democrats will raise your taxes and Democrats will cut defense spending. We got the first indication yesterday from Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) that major defense cuts are coming.

Speaking to reporters, Reed said, “There is going to be significant pressure on the defense budget going forward. …There is a domestic crisis now that is requiring significant unexpected resources and then the ‘good news’ is when we fix it then we have the challenge and opportunity to fix the deficit. That is tough going.”

Reed went on to warn of “painful adjustments” for the Pentagon. At the top of Reed’s target list are advanced weapons systems that have made America the world’s sole superpower, thanks in large part to our superior technology, which saves lives of U.S. personnel and greatly reduces civilian casualties.

I’m often asked, “If conservatives take back Congress, can we reverse the damage?” Well, this is one area where it is very hard to play catch up. Advanced weapons systems take years to develop. If the programs are cancelled, engineers and designers are laid off. They find work elsewhere. Factories are shut down. Sure they can be restarted, and people can be rehired. But that takes time and even more money.

Many folks complained about the difficulties we experienced in the Iraq War. Many, myself included, argued that we should have deployed a larger force than what was initially sent. But in between the first Gulf War and the Iraq War was the last Democrat administration, which gutted our national defense, leaving President Bush few options to work with after America was attacked just nine months into his term.

And let’s not forget the context in which these cuts are being planned. North Korea is lobbing missiles. Russia is flexing its muscles. China is spending aggressively on its military to develop a deep water navy to rival ours and dominate Asia. Iran is working furiously on nuclear weapons. Meanwhile here at home, Obama and his liberal allies in Congress are on the verge of foisting another trillion-dollar entitlement program on the nation.

We’ve just spent nearly a trillion dollars to stimulate the economy, and yet unemployment is approaching double digits. GMAC, the financial arm of Government Motors, is asking for billions more in taxpayer aid. If Government Motors is making cars the American people don’t want, then shut it down. Stop wasting taxpayer dollars on bailouts and socialist schemes, and use our money for the government’s primary constitutional obligation – provide for the defense of this nation!

But I’ll make two predictions: In the months ahead, Obama and Democrats in Congress will use the economic crisis and burgeoning debt as an excuse to gut our national defense. They will use socialized healthcare, as liberal politicians do in Europe, to cut defense spending. And just as this administration has demonized Wall Street, banks, oil companies, insurance companies and others who object to its leftwing policies, it will also demonize defense contractors in its drive to disarm America.

Reid’s Deception

On Monday, Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid announced a grand compromise on healthcare “reform” legislation. To please the leftwing base of the Democrat Party, Reid’s bill would include a government-run public option – the first step toward socialized medicine in America. That’s not my opinion, but Barney Franks’. To attract the votes of moderate Democrats, Reid announced that his plan would allow states to opt-out of the public option.

The state legislature would have to vote on legislation to opt-out, and the governor would have to sign the opt-out bill. But here’s the catch: There is no opting out of the taxes to pay for this new $1 trillion entitlement program. All the taxes and penalties would remain in effect, so citizens of states that opt-out would still end up paying for a program they can’t access. As Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) said, “the big [liberal] states will [opt-in] and the rest of us will end up paying for their excesses.” Remember what happened to the conservative governors who tried to “opt-out” of the stimulus money?

Last night on MSNBC, leftwing radical Ed Schultz was effusive with praise for Harry Reid’s “opt-out” deception. Schultz stated flatly what drives liberal politics: get constituents hooked on government programs and you have a guaranteed voting base. Schultz said of the public option:

“This is a great move by the Democrats. …Once you give it [the public option] to them, they don’t want to give it up. That’s the way it’s gonna be. I think this is a great move by Harry Reid. The public option is a public option. And it is – it is – the first step toward single payer [socialized medicine]. That’s what we progressives want. This is just the road to get there.”
It couldn’t be clearer than that. Barack Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the national Democrat Party are taking us down the road toward socialism, toward confiscatory tax rates, even bigger government, greater spending and more debt.

Your freedom is at stake. The standard of living you have enjoyed will be denied to your children and grandchildren if Democrats pass ObamaCare – a new trillion-dollar entitlement program. And the quality of healthcare that is available today will be destroyed if government gets involved.

Democrats Will Decide

Once again, I’m getting grumblings about what the GOP is or is not doing to stop Obama from socializing healthcare. The GOP is fighting as hard as it can given how few Republican senators there are. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said yesterday that Republican senators are prepared to filibuster the government-run public option and that on this vote there is no compromise.

You may recall that Olympia Snowe voted for the Baucus bill in committee in order to “keep the discussion going.” Yesterday, in a shot across the bow of Snowe and other “moderates,” McConnell said, “I think it’s appropriate to make the point at the outset that a vote … on the motion to proceed to this bill [to end the filibuster of the public option] will be treated as a vote on the merits of the bill.” McConnell’s right. Let me explain why.

This bill can’t be stopped by just Republicans. You must understand that, my friends. They have only 40 votes in the Senate – that is not enough to sustain a filibuster. Socialized medicine will pass or fail depending on what a handful of “moderate” Democrats do. If they vote with Harry Reid to let the bill come to the Senate floor, it will pass — period. The senators who most likely will control the fate of ObamaCare are:

Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) — (501) 375-2993

Mark Pryor (D-AR) — (501) 324-6336

Joe Lieberman (I-CT) — (860) 549-8463 –- Already announced his opposition, but could use calls of encouragement.

Evan Bayh (D-IN) — (317) 554-0750

Mary Landrieu (D-LA) — (225) 389-0395

Max Baucus (D-MT) — (406) 657-6790

Jon Tester (D-MT) — (406) 449-5401

Kent Conrad (D-ND) — (701) 258-4648

Byron Dorgan (D-ND) — (701) 250-4618

Ben Nelson (D-NE) — (402) 441-4600

Tim Johnson (D-SD) — (605) 332-8896

Jim Webb (D-VA) — (804) 771-2221

Mark Warner (D-VA) — (804) 739-0247

If you live in any of these states, call your senators and demand that they oppose socialized medicine. Urge them to oppose the public option on every vote. Eight of these 13 Democrats –Lincoln, Pryor, Landrieu, Baucus, Tester, Conrad, Dorgan and Nelson – represent conservative states that voted for Republican presidential candidates in the past two elections. Remind them of that fact.

Access For Sale?

Today’s Washington Times reports that the Obama White House has “quietly rewarded scores of top Democratic donors with VIP access to the White House, private briefings with administration advisers and invitations to important speeches and town-hall meetings.” Really? And I thought President Obama was supposed to change Washington. In fact, Candidate Obama said he would crack down on “the disproportionate influence of lobbyists and special interest.”

But according to the Times report, the Obama White House, which we were told would be “the most open and transparent administration in history,” is promising major donors “access to senior White House officials in exchange for pledges to donate $30,400 personally or to bundle $300,000 in contributions ahead of the 2010 midterm elections.” One top donor was given access to the Oval Office – as a birthday present. Another donor and his family got to use the White House bowling alley. Other big givers get to watch movies with the Obamas in the White House theater.

CBS’s Mark Knoller reports that President Obama has held 23 fundraisers in his first nine months in office – that’s nearly four times as many as George W. Bush held in his first nine months!

Responding to the Washington Times report, RNC Chairman Michael Steele said, “Bill Clinton turned the White House into a hotel and coffee shop. Now President Obama has turned the White House into a full service resort complete with amenities for the highest Democrat bidder. The seriousness of this issue requires an immediate investigation… Candidate Obama pledged to clean up the muddy waters of Washington, but President Obama has jumped in head first.”

Running my own political action committee, I’ll be the first to acknowledge the importance of money in politics. It’s a simple fact that nine times out of ten, the candidate with the most money wins. But Obama’s hypocrisy and the history of Democrat corruption – from ACORN’s “muscle for money” program to the Clinton White House fundraising scandals – cannot be ignored. Steele is right to demand an investigation.

President Dithers While Troops Die

Eleven American troops and three U.S. civilians were killed in Afghanistan Monday in tragic incidents. In one case, our forces won a firefight with Taliban thugs only to perish when their helicopter later crashed. As I write this, there is breaking news of eight more U.S. casualties after bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan.

In a speech yesterday at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Florida, President Obama defended his delay in deciding whether to send reinforcements to Afghanistan. He told the audience, “I will never rush the solemn decision of sending you into harm’s way. I won’t risk your lives unless it is absolutely necessary.”

That sounds good except for one little detail. He has already sent troops into harm’s way in Afghanistan. They are there now in larger numbers with their officers because Barack Obama sent them. This was the “necessary war” that Obama said he supported during the campaign, in contrast to the unnecessary “bad war” in Iraq, which was “Bush’s war.” Those soldiers and Marines are dying now while their officers continue to beg the president for reinforcements.

In 2008, candidate Obama was a tough guy. In the presidential debate on October 7th, Obama said if he was elected, “We will kill bin Laden. We will crush Al Qaeda. That has to be our biggest national security priority.” I don’t remember the last time Obama mentioned Osama. Neither do I hear much talk about Afghanistan being the “good war” that we have to win.

In fact, the president said in an interview on ABC that he was uncomfortable with the concept of “victory” in Afghanistan. I would wager he is not as uncomfortable as the Marines, special ops troops, soldiers, airmen and others who are putting everything on the line daily while the Obama Administration makes excuses for its failure to make decisions.

I hope the rumor going around Washington is not true – that Obama doesn’t want to send more troops before November 3rd because that would so outrage his leftwing base that it may not show up to vote in the important elections in Virginia, New Jersey and New York. The lives of our men and women in uniform are more important than politics.

The clock keeps ticking while the president keeps meeting and golfing. President Bush stopped playing golf when the wars began because he said it sent the “wrong signal.” Obama played golf for the 24th time of his presidency last weekend – hitting a mark that took Bush nearly three years to reach. Every White House sends signals, and the signal the enemies of America are getting from this White House is one of vacillation and weakness.

Busting Small Businesses

The economists are vexed and the politicians are worried. “Consumer Confidence Slips Unexpectedly” this month, according to the breaking news headline. You don’t have to be an expert to know that the economy is on shaky ground – just talk to a small business owner. In fact, Washington could use fewer so-called “experts” and more small business owners these days. (That’s one reason why I’m proud to support Doug Hoffman, a successful small business owner, in the New York special election. The last thing Washington needs is another liberal politician!)

Facing an even worse economic crisis nearly three decades ago, my former boss Ronald Reagan said, “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.” Today, the nation’s small business owners are saying the same thing evidenced by this headline in The Wall Street Journal, “Political Uncertainty Puts Freeze on Small Businesses.”

The article begins by describing three small business owners in Georgia, Oregon and Virginia. One has canceled hiring plans; one has “halted an expansion project;” and one is about to layoff workers. Why? The “experts” are telling us that the worst of the recession is over.

Economically that may be true. But a lot of business owners are hitting the brakes because of politics. Liberal policies like “a health-care overhaul grinding through Congress [that] could bring unknown new obligations to insure employees. Bush-era tax cuts are set to end next year … [and] legislation aimed at tackling climate change might raise businesses’ energy costs.”

Liberal politicians are great at making promises and growing government. But promises have to be paid for, and the government does not create wealth. The free market, businesses and jobs create wealth. Government only confiscates and redistributes wealth through tax policy. Worse yet, government can destroy wealth through bad policies that make businesses less profitable and workers unproductive.

This administration and its leftwing allies in Congress have spent the past year demonizing one industry after another; proposing one job-killing bad idea after another; raising existing taxes and creating new ones to pay for new programs and even more spending.

Successful business owners haven’t succeeded by running their companies the way the government has run Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Unfortunately, there seems to be very little understanding of basic economics in Washington today, and the nation’s small business owners are worried about the future.

2009 Election Update

As you know, CWF’s main purpose is to elect pro-life, pro-family, pro-free enterprise, smaller government, lower taxes conservatives to public office. One week from today, there will be the first major elections since Barack Obama’s victory last November. I am happy to report that things are looking up! Here’s a brief summary.

* New Jersey – The governor’s race in the liberal Garden State is a toss-up. While the most recent Rasmussen poll has Republican Chris Christie up three points, the race is too close to call and turnout will be key.

* Virginia – Republicans fielded a solidly conservative slate in Bob McDonnell for Governor, Bill Bolling for Lt. Governor and Ken Cuccinelli for Attorney General. The ticket has come under unrelenting attack, particularly for its pro-life, pro-family views from the Washington Post and others. President Obama has thrown his weight into the race in recent weeks, but a poll this morning shows McDonnell and the rest of the conservative ticket up 11 points.

This is an important one, my friends. It will be virtually impossible for a Republican to win the presidency in 2012 unless they win Virginia back from Obama.

* NY-23 – The three-way race to fill a vacant congressional seat in New York’s 23rd Congressional District appears to be moving toward the conservative, Doug Hoffman, who is running against liberals on the Republican and Democrat tickets. We endorsed the conservative early on, as did Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, Fred Thompson, Steve Forbes, Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, Concerned Women for America PAC, Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum and the fiscally conservative group Club for Growth. We have invested significant funds in the race and have ads on the air now.

Polls this morning seem to indicate that the liberal Republican is fading fast, and the conservative Hoffman may now be in the lead. My hope is that Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich, who have not endorsed the only conservative in the race, will do so now to put him over the top next Tuesday.

The Truth About Those “Obscene” Profits

Thus far in his presidency, Barack Obama, his congressional cronies Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, and Big Media have attacked many sectors of the private economy. First they took aim at our nation’s banks, accusing them of being the culprit in our current financial crisis. Obama then attacked the travel industry when he argued that people should not stay in nice hotels or spend money on extravagant vacations. Then it was Wall Street, drug companies and “the wealthy.”

The Obama machine has targeted insurance companies throughout the healthcare debate. MoveOn.org, an Obama ally, has even been running a television ad that states, “Health insurance companies are willing to let bodies pile up as long as their profits are safe.” A lot of what the liberals here in Washington are saying about health insurers is false according to an Associated Press “fact check” released today. Here’s what the AP found:

* On average, the profit margins of health insurance companies are around six percent.

* Their profits barely eclipsed two percent of revenue last year, placing them 35th of 53 industries on the Fortune 500 list.

* The best health insurance performer was HealthSpring, which posted a 5.4 percent margin — less then the makers of Clorox bleach, Tupperware and Coors beers.

For comparison, railroads recorded a 12.6 percent profit margin, while network and other communications equipment companies topped the Fortune list at 20.4 percent. Yet, according to the Associated Press, “Democrats and their allies have gone after insurance companies as rapacious profiteers making ‘immoral’ and ‘obscene’ returns while ‘the bodies pile up.’”

Throughout the presidential campaign, Barack Obama emphasized bringing people together. Since taking office, it seems that he spends as much time dividing us and playing on our fears as he does playing golf. After the health insurance industry, which businesses will Obama attack next?

Public Option = No Option

Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid announced this afternoon that he intends to force a vote on the government-run “public option” because his private discussions with fellow senators indicate there are nearly 60 senators willing to support it in one form or another.

Let me remind you again what the public option is all about. President Obama has said that the public option could force insurance companies to be “honest” and lower costs by having to compete against the federal government. Today, Reid repeated those claims. But, as the AP “fact check” report makes clear, the insurance industry is not reaping “obscene” profits. The real goal is to bankrupt the insurance companies, putting them out of business, thereby making the government-run public option the only option.

Honest advocates of the public option admit that it is the vehicle through which they will achieve government-run socialized healthcare. Read this column and watch the video at the end. And if you need more proof of the public option Trojan horse, watch this video of Barney Frank saying that the public option, with its “strength and power,” is the best way to get a socialized single payer system.

The “Obama Hangover”

Today’s Boston Globe reports that some Democrat candidates are experiencing “Obama hangover.” For many liberal activists the 2008 campaign was intoxicating, but evidently their enthusiasm has waned significantly. Liberal candidates are finding it difficult to recruit volunteers and energize voters. There is more than just anecdotal evidence for this report.

James Carville’s polling firm, Democracy Corps, recently surveyed likely voters in 40 key congressional districts with Democrat incumbents to gauge the mood of the electorate. His results must be setting off alarm bells at the DNC. Here are a few noteworthy findings:

* Obama’s job approval rating in Democrat-held congressional districts stands at 48%-to-49%. In other words, if the election were held today, President Obama would likely be a drag against incumbent Democrats running for re-election.

* When asked if they would vote to re-elect their incumbent congressman or vote for someone else, 40% of likely voters in Democrat districts said they would vote to re-elect their congressman, while 45% said they would vote for someone else. These results reflect a seven-point negative swing against incumbent Democrats since the last Democracy Corps poll in April.

* Democracy Corps also tested six Democrat messages on the economy and four Republican messages on the economy that you will likely hear in next year’s congressional campaigns. All four Republican messages registered significantly higher levels of intensity with voters, while the Democrats’ defense of deepening deficits and sky-high spending largely fell flat.

Speaking of voter intensity, in today’s daily Rasmussen tracking poll, Barack Obama’s approval rating among likely voters stands at 47%-to-52%. Those figures include 29% who strongly approve of Obama’s performance and a whopping 41% of voters who strongly disapprove of his performance. This is a critical measurement because elections are won or lost on turnout, and the most motivated voters are the ones who turnout most.

In addition to the Democracy Corps’ polling on economic messaging, Scott Rasmussen reported last week, “For the first time in recent years, voters trust Republicans more than Democrats on all ten key electoral issues. The GOP holds double-digit advantages on five of them.”

The Post-Partisan Power Play

Who would have thought that the candidate who promised to transcend partisanship, who promised to unite the nation under the banner of “hope and change” and who rode into Washington with a herd of new donkeys would bear such a striking resemblance to Richard Nixon? We did. We warned readers last year that very little good comes out of the Chicago political machine or the mouth of Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

In recent weeks, the White House has decided to fire back against its critics and opponents. To a degree, that’s normal and expected. Politics is a contact sport, after all. But this White House and its allies – with some personnel taking inspiration from communist dictators – have gone way beyond what is normal or expected.

Calling critics “un-American,” threatening businesses with regulatory retribution and punitive taxation, literally locking committee doors and locking out the press is way beyond normal. It is, as House Republican Leader John Boehner said, “flat-out despicable.” I’m pleased to report that in the past few days, there have been some positive developments.

Earlier this week, Tennessee’s soft-spoken senator, Lamar Alexander, went to the Senate floor and blasted the White House for compiling, as Nixon did, an “enemies list.”

This week, the White House made “pay czar” Kenneth Feinberg available to the Washington press pool for interviews regarding his plan for salary caps at bailed out banks and companies. But Fox News was locked out. The other network news chiefs were stunned. To their credit, they told the White House to let Fox in or none of them would show up. The White House backed down.

Politico reports today: “A White House effort to undermine conservative critics is generating backlash on Capitol Hill – and not just from Republicans.” Many moderate Democrats are increasingly concerned about the White House’s heavy-handed attacks on the Chamber of Commerce.

Freedom of the press and freedom of speech are essential to the survival of liberty. If every media outlet spouts the same “party line,” how is that any different than what the Soviets did with Pravda? But that seems to be exactly what this White House wants – to control the media as White House Communications Director Anita Dunn said. We’re getting dangerously close to going down the slippery-slope toward a state-run media, the subject of my weekly Human Events column, which you can read here.

Can “O’s” Administration Do Anything Right?

Compared to other proposals the administration has thrown at the American people this past year, the home buyer tax credit was not bad. Unfortunately, the government could not even effectively run this program.

New home buyers would receive up to $8,000 in tax credits under the plan. The money was supposed to be available for first-time buyers who bought a primary residence after April 9, 2008, and only individuals making less than $75,000 or couples making less than $150,000 would be eligible. However, during a Ways and Means oversight subcommittee hearing yesterday, House members were informed that thousands of fraudulent claims were made.

The Treasury Department said that at least 19,000 filers who had not bought homes claimed $139 million in tax credits and were in turn reimbursed. An additional 74,000 tax-credit claims, totaling $500 million, could become invalid because of previous home ownership. Even more surprising, 500 people under the age of 18, including a 4-year-old child, had their names on applications for the credit, which has no minimum-age requirement according to federal officials. Evidently some adults used a child’s name as the purchaser of the home because they were ineligible to receive the credit due to their incomes.

Many of these fraudulent claims occurred before the IRS had updated their computer programs. If they had done this correctly, the program would have automatically checked the claims to ensure that they were valid based on the information submitted.

When added up, the total potential waste of your tax money from fraudulent home-credits could be upwards of $639 million. This is the same government that wants to take over our entire healthcare system! We have seen the government’s ineptitude in recent months with cash-for-clunkers, a behind schedule H1N1 flu vaccination and now this. When will liberals in Washington learn that government isn’t the solution to every problem? As my former boss Ronald Reagan correctly said, “Government is the problem.”

Conservatives Rally To Hoffman

Doug Hoffman, the conservative candidate in the special election to fill a vacant New York House seat, continues to attract support from national leaders. Yesterday, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin endorsed Hoffman. This morning, on Bill Bennett’s radio show, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum offered this analysis:

“…the Republican seems to be … falling apart. …You’re not throwing your vote away on [Hoffman]. …This is a race that we need to win. …The best chance for a conservative … a Republican … to win this race … is Doug Hoffman. …I’ve never endorsed a third-party candidate. [But] I want to win. The conservative [Hoffman] has a better chance of winning.”
I agree completely with Rick Santorum’s analysis. That’s why we asked you for funds, and that is why CWF is on the air today in New York’s 23rd Congressional District with radio ads urging conservative voters to support Doug Hoffman. You can listen to the ad online at http://www.cwfpac.com. These ads would not have been possible with your generous support. Thank you, my friends!

End Of Day Report 10 22 09

Harry’s Debt Debacle

Every day there are battles being fought on Capitol Hill that you are not hearing about. In these fights, conservative congressmen are going to the mat for your values. I know some of you don’t believe that because you don’t read about it in your local paper or see it on the news. But most of the media is leftwing. They have no desire to encourage you, so I’ll do it instead.

Yesterday Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid tried to add a quarter of a trillion dollars of debt onto the backs of your kids and grandchildren. That’s right – another $250 billion. Every single Senate Republican stood up and voted “NO.” Reid tried to do this in order to grease the skids for ObamaCare by making it appear as though their “reform” plan costs less than it really does. Thirteen Democrats also objected to the budget gimmick, and it failed on a 47-to-53 vote.

I’m glad a few Democrats suddenly discovered fiscal responsibility on this single vote. But long term, liberals have only one solution to virtually every problem – higher taxes. ObamaCare is going to cost a lot, and if it passes Big Government is going to demand even more of your hard-earned money to pay for it. And here’s the real kicker: It’s not going to lower costs.

Last week, I told you about a study conducted by the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. The study found that under ObamaCare health insurance premiums will go up, not down. If ObamaCare passes, families would pay $4,000 more than if Congress did nothing at all. Predictably, the White House and its liberal allies savaged the report and accused the insurance industry of “deplorable scare tactics.”

Well, I’m curious to see what the Obama White House will call the federal employees at the Department of Health and Human Services. That Department just released its analysis of ObamaCare, and it found similar results. Here’s how the Associated Press described it: “The nation’s medical costs will keep spiraling upward even faster than they are now under Democratic legislation pending in the House, a report from government economic experts concluded Wednesday.” [Emphasis added.]

If government spending increases even faster than it is now, what do you think is going to happen to your taxes? That’s right – they’re going through the roof under ObamaCare. As the saying goes, “The government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.”

A Jihadist Army Among Us?

Early yesterday morning Massachusetts authorities arrested 27-year-old suspect Tarek Mehanna at his family’s home in Sudbury. Mehanna is charged with plotting to attack malls with assault weapons and kill federal officials.

Mehanna was not your typical wannabe jihadist. His father is a professor of medicinal chemistry at the pharmacy college where Mehanna graduated. For years his family has lived in Sudbury, an affluent suburb west of Boston. Not many people would have labeled Mehanna as a potential terrorist given his upbringing and well-to-do-family. Mehanna is not the only case like this, however.

U.S.-born Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki, who currently resides in Yemen, has turned to radical Islam and frequently preaches hateful rhetoric aimed at the destruction of the United States.

According to Al-Awlaki’s website he was the Muslim chaplain of George Washington University. He was born in New Mexico and studied Islamic sciences of Quran, hadith, and fiqh with scholars from Yemen. He also served as an imam in mosques in Denver, San Diego, and Falls Church, Virginia.

How many men like Mehanna and Al-Awlaki are in the United States? I believe home grown jihadism is one of the biggest threats to our nation’s security. We have seen in recent months that many foiled terrorist plots have been planned by men who lived in the United States for years. According to the New York Times, Mehanna “is the fifth person living in the United States to be arrested on terrorism charges in the last five months.” Thankfully, we have brave men and women in our security forces who are protecting this country everyday from Islamic fascists like Mehanna and Al-Awlaki.

Thank you!

All day yesterday many of you responded to our appeal for campaign donations to help the only conservative running in a special congressional election. The donations we received ranged from $5.00 to $5,000. That money was deployed early this morning with an advertising buy that emphasizes all of the issues you and I care about, including the sanctity of life and marriage remaining between a man and a woman. I deeply appreciate your generous response.

We also received many e-mails yesterday and today from friends around the country who are hurting financially. I read all of those notes, as I do every day, and I try to respond to each one. We realize that many people are struggling to save their homes and family businesses, put food on the table and rebuild their retirement accounts.

We never want you to feel guilty if you cannot donate. And we don’t want you ever to go further in debt to support our work. I also want to tell you that we regularly pray for America’s families who are struggling. God bless you all!
