$900 Million For Palestinians

Our unemployment rate is heading toward 10%. Each page of the 1,000 page healthcare bill will cost another $1 billion of your tax money. Our deficit is increasing so fast that experts are starting to ask, “What comes after trillion?” In view of this financial mess, I thought you might want to know what Obama and Hillary think is a really great use of another $900 million of your money.

They are sending it to those lovely folks in the Palestinian Authority. You know, the Jew-haters and America-bashers we regularly see on TV. Two hundred million dollars was sent on July 24th, and the Obama Administration held a special teleconference to announce the “good news” to our Palestinian “allies.” The money is supposed to stay out of the hands of terrorists and be used for job creation. If you believe that, I have a great bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Here’s the point: Sending your tax dollars to the Palestinians is a bad idea even in good times. Every poll shows the Palestinians hate us, no matter how much money we send them. But it is even more wrong-headed to send so much money when our country is on the ropes economically. President Obama should cancel the remaining $700 million and use it for job growth in communities like Palestine, Pennsylvania, where American families are hurting.

Targeting Insurance Companies

Since Barack Obama took office, his top priority has been to grant government greater control over our lives. First it was the government takeover of General Motors. Then it was telling American businesses how big of a “carbon footprint” they can leave. Now it’s trying to direct what kind of health care you and your family can get. But with their planned healthcare takeover floundering, Washington’s socialists are recalibrating their argument.

Yesterday during her weekly press conference, Speaker Nancy Pelosi attacked private insurance companies. “They (private insurers) are the villains in this. They have been part of the problem in a major way. They are doing everything in their power to stop a public option from happening. And the public has to know that. They can disguise their arguments in any way they want, but the fact is that they don’t want the competition. It’s almost immoral what they’re doing.”

Once again, the Left is reverting to its old habits – attacking business and free enterprise. Some Americans may be unhappy with their insurance company. But, if you ask them if they would rather have government-run health insurance or the private plan they have now, overwhelmingly they would say they want to keep their current plan. The Democrats know their socialized healthcare scheme is losing steam, so they are going to attack private insurers. Don’t fall for it.

By the way, Democrats are so determined to make you pay for abortions through ObamaCare that Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, invoked a special rule yesterday that allows the chairman to order a second vote hours later. Here’s what happened: An amendment to ban abortion funding in the healthcare reform bill initially passed, much to Waxman’s surprise. So, he ordered a new vote. One Blue Dog Democrat, Bart Gordon of Tennessee, switched his vote from “yes” to “no” and another Blue Dog who missed the first vote, Zach Space of Ohio, was present for the second vote and he too voted “no.” That killed the pro-life amendment 30-to-29.

Return Of The Black Panthers

As President Obama was hosting the Beer Summit at the White House, attempting to diffuse a racial controversy sparked by his own comments, another controversy was returning to the front pages. Two months ago, the Washington Times broke the story that political appointees in the Obama Justice Department had overruled career lawyers and stopped the prosecution of members of the New Black Panther Party charged with voter intimidation during the 2008 election.

The Times has stayed on this story, and yesterday reported the name of the official who ordered the case dismissed, “Associate Attorney General Thomas J. Perrelli, the department’s No. 3 political appointee.” Today, the Times reports that one of the Black Panthers named in the voter intimidation complaint “obtained new credentials as a poll watcher ‘at any ward/division in Philadelphia’ just days after the charges against him were dismissed.”

Congressional Republicans have been demanding answers from Attorney General Eric Holder, and they are now demanding that he refile the case. Virginia Representative Frank Wolf said, “In all fairness, he [Holder] has a duty to protect those seeking to vote and I remain deeply troubled by this questionable dismissal of an important voter-intimidation case in Philadelphia.” In addition, Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, has asked repeatedly that the career Justice prosecutors be allowed to tell their side of the story. A meeting among top Justice officials involved in the case, Rep. Smith and John Conyers, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, was canceled yesterday and has been rescheduled for next month.

I’m glad to see congressional conservatives fighting hard to defend our cherished freedoms like the right to vote and holding government officials accountable in the administration of justice. But the handling of this case is just another reminder of the myriad ways in which elections have consequences. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments as we learn them.

Why Social Conservatives Should Oppose EFCA

In my Human Events column today, I examine the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), the misnamed bill currently being considered by Congress that may, among other things, get rid of the secret ballot for unionization. But, if it becomes law, EFCA would affect social issues, like the definition of marriage and the right to life. In fact, EFCA could prove lucrative for labor unions and all their liberal causes. Find out how by reading my column at: http://www.humanevents.com. Thank you.

ObamaCare On Life Support?

As I’ve stated before, polls are just a snapshot in time and they can and do change. It’s also not unusual for polls to give you conflicting information or even contradictory results. But here’s something that we can safely say without any fear of contradiction: ObamaCare is on life support; the American people do not want it. In the past 24 hours, there is new polling data to back up that assertion. Not one poll, not even two polls or three – but five new polls show either opposition to or serious reservations about ObamaCare and government-run, socialized medicine. Here’s a brief rundown of the key stats:

* Wall Street Journal/NBC News — 36% support ObamaCare; 42% oppose it.

* National Public Radio — 42% support ObamaCare; 47% oppose it.

* New York Times/CBS News — 31% believe healthcare reform will help them; 59% believe it will not benefit them; and 81% worry that the legislation will lead to job losses.

* Time Magazine — 62% believe the final healthcare reform bill will raise healthcare costs, not lower them; 65% worry it will be more complicated; and 56% fear it will result in lost freedoms like the ability to choose their own doctor.

* Gallup – Only 30% believe healthcare reform will lower costs, and only 26% expect it will improve the quality of their medical care, while 34% fear it will make their medical care worse.

This morning, we sent out a list of ten questions to ask your congressmen. Don’t be intimidated – they work for you! But let me add one more question, and this could well be the only one you need to ask: Why is Congress pushing something that every poll shows the American people do not want?

The State Of Oklahoma vs. Eric Holder

Prior to the November general election, I warned the American people of just how liberal Barack Obama’s policies were. As Obama recently told House conservatives, “I won,” and everyday we are seeing his radical views being put into action to shape public policy. The latest example is the Obama Justice Department interfering in an upcoming vote in Oklahoma.

In a pre-emptive warning issued in April, the Justice Department hinted that it would withhold federal funding if Oklahoma state officials vote on an English-only referendum. In response, the state’s congressional delegation wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder attacking the timing of the letter and demanding to know if Oklahoma was being singled out. They also questioned what federal funds Holder was threatening to withhold.

Multiple states have successfully passed English-only referendum laws in recent years. Those votes went unnoticed because the Bush Administration, along with the overwhelming majority of Americans, favored English-only referenda. But Barack Obama and his team at the Department of Justice disagree. I hope my hard-earned tax dollars would be used to combat domestic and international terrorist threats instead of English-only referenda.

Don’t let the media fool you on this issue. Just because you favor English as the official language does not mean you are anti-immigrant. In fact, it is the exact opposite. The immigrants that achieved the most success throughout our history have been those who have assimilated into American society. The best way to do this is to learn English. By having English as an official language, immigrants are more encouraged to learn it, and thus are more likely to succeed. I hope Oklahomans disregard the Attorney General’s threats later this year.

“Stimulating” Projects

I have good news to report today. I, along with many of you, have been wondering where exactly all that stimulus money has been going. The unemployment rate has continued to grow, along with the deficit, despite the fact that we passed the stimulus bill six months ago. Well, it looks like we found our answer.

Unfortunately, according to Citizens Against Government Waste, the National Endowment for the Arts is spending some of the money it received from the Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund nude simulated-sex dances, Saturday night “pervert” revues and pornographic horror films at art houses located in – where else! – San Francisco. (I wonder if that was an earmark requested by Nancy Pelosi?)

The NEA was given $80 million dollars that was supposed to be used to preserve jobs in orchestras, museums and theatres. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the type of pork that is produced by the government when they pass the largest spending bill in our nation’s history. Maybe if our elected representatives had taken the time to read the stimulus bill before voting on it, wasteful projects like this would not have been funded with your tax dollars.

Questions For Your Congressmen

It’s been a very busy time here in Washington. Fighting ObamaCare has dominated our work in recent days. In fact, we’ve published more than a dozen items on ObamaCare in this daily report in the past two weeks. We were able to stop the march of Big Government socialism for a while. But with news that the “moderate” Blue Dog Democrats have cut a deal with liberal House leaders, ObamaCare is on the move once again. The battlefield now shifts from Capitol Hill to each congressional district, and we’re calling in reinforcements – YOU!

Yesterday, President Obama conceded that there probably won’t be a vote on healthcare reform until “the end of September or the middle of October.” That means you have August to attend town hall meetings with your representative and senators, stop by their congressional offices, write letters to the editor and educate your friends and family members about the dangers of ObamaCare. To help you in that effort, we’ve produced a short list of key concerns and questions, which are copied below. You can also find them posted online here . Please share this report with like-minded folks and those who may be undecided and willing to listen. Thank you for everything you do to defend our shared values in your community!

Pro-choice groups, like NARAL and Planned Parenthood, are demanding that abortion be covered in any healthcare reform bill. In a recent interview with Politico, Laurie Rubiner, vice president for public policy and advocacy at Planned Parenthood, defends this demand by saying, “the alternative would be slashing benefits for millions of women who currently have [private] coverage for abortions…” In addition, key administration officials refuse to rule out abortion coverage. When asked on Fox News Sunday whether taxpayer money would go to pay for abortions, White House Budget Director Peter Orszag replied, “I am not prepared to say explicitly that right now. It’s obviously a controversial issue, and it’s one of the questions that is playing out in this debate.”

Pro-life senators on the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee forced a roll call vote on the issue when Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) attempted to add an amendment to the healthcare bill that would, in her words, “include women’s health clinics that provide comprehensive services … deemed medically necessary or appropriate.” She admitted that such “health clinics” would include Planned Parenthood. The pro-life amendment to prohibit funding of abortion lost 11-to-12.

Question for your Congressmen: Will you oppose any healthcare reform bill that uses my tax dollars to pay for abortions?

In a recent New York Post column, Betsy McCaughey, a former lieutenant governor of New York and health care expert, wrote:

“One troubling provision of the House bill compels seniors to submit to a counseling session every five years (and more often if they become sick or go into a nursing home) about alternatives for end-of-life care (House bill, p. 425-430). The sessions cover highly sensitive matters such as whether to receive antibiotics and ‘the use of artificially administered nutrition and hydration.’ This mandate invites abuse, and seniors could easily be pushed to refuse care.”
Question for your Congressmen: Will you oppose any healthcare reform bill that in any way promotes euthanasia?

The United States faces a debt crisis. According to many analysts, including Senator Judd Gregg (who is so respected by President Obama that he offered Gregg the post of Secretary of Commerce), the Obama budget will give us $11 trillion of debt at the end of five years and $17 trillion of debt at the end of ten years. (Source: PolitiFact.com)

Question for your Congressmen: Why is Congress and the president pushing through a healthcare bill that would cost another trillion dollars over the next ten years? Shouldn’t we concentrate on getting the debt under control first?

According to a July 15th report by The Hill, “The House bill would be paid for by roughly $500 billion in Medicare and Medicaid cuts…” These “cuts” would come as millions of Americans are retiring. Logic suggests that if we are “cutting” hundreds of billions of dollars healthcare would have to be limited or rationed in someway to accommodate more people. And seniors would be most affected by Medicare cuts.

In addition, advisors to President Obama, such as Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, brother of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, have suggested that healthcare should be rationed to certain individuals. Dr. Emanuel once wrote that “services provided to individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens … should not be guaranteed. An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia.”
(Source: http://www.ncpa.org/pdfs/Where_Civic_Republicanism_and_Deliberative_Democracy_Meet.pdf)

Question for your Congressmen: How can government promise to do more with less? Will you oppose any healthcare reform bill that in any way limits my access to healthcare or medicines recommended by my doctor?

Despite a 9.5% (and rising) unemployment rate, the healthcare bill in the House imposes a new 8% payroll tax on small businesses with payrolls of $400,000 or more that don’t provide health insurance for their employees. This is in addition to the current 15% payroll tax. What this means is that any employer with a payroll of $400,000 dollars or higher will have to pay at least 25% above the salary just to hire someone. Common sense tells you that any struggling small business will likely lay off workers to avoid this additional tax. On the other hand, if the tax is cheaper than the cost of health insurance, larger businesses may opt to cancel their health insurance, forcing employees into the government’s “public option,” and simply pay the 8% fine. (Source: Wall Street Journal, July 15, 2009)

Question for your Congressmen: Why are you imposing additional mandates and taxes on small businesses, which create the overwhelming majority of new jobs, in the middle of a severe recession?

American healthcare is better than that in European countries with socialized medicine. The German breast cancer mortality rate is 52% higher than in the United States. Prostate cancer mortality is 604% higher in the United Kingdom and 457% higher in Norway than in the United States. Canadian healthcare lags behind the United States too. Canadian patients wait twice as long to see a specialist for hip surgery or cancer than we do in the United States. Most Americans say they are satisfied with the U.S. health care system, but more than 70% of Germans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders and Britons say that their systems need “fundamental change” or “complete rebuilding.” (Source: National Center for Policy Analysis.)

In an editorial on July 26th, the Washington Post criticized President Obama for not “leveling about the consequences of change” when it comes to healthcare costs versus quality. Here’s what the Post wrote: “The Congressional Budget Office estimates that new technology accounts for about half the increase in health-care costs over the past several decades. This, for the most part, is a good thing. Adjusted for inflation, health-care spending per person is six times what it was 40 years ago. But no one today would settle for 1960s-style medicine.”

Question for your Congressmen: Why are you trying to force us in the direction of more government involvement in healthcare when everywhere government-run healthcare has been tried, quality declines and care is rationed?

According to a recent poll, just 23% of voters believe healthcare reform legislation will lower costs, while 53% believe it will lead to more expensive care. By a margin of 50% to 23%, voters believe that “reform” legislation will make the quality of care decline. And while voters believe they will get worse care at higher costs, 78% also believe that healthcare reform will result in middle class tax hikes. In addition, a recent Fox News poll found that 91% of those surveyed have health insurance, 84% said that the quality of their health insurance was either excellent or good and 83% said the quality of health care they receive from their private insurance is either good or excellent. And only 12% of those surveyed said reforming health care was the most important issue Congress should be working on right now. (Source: Rasmussen Reports, July 28, 2009 and Fox News poll July 23, 2009.)

Question for your Congressmen: Why are you and the White House rushing this bill through Congress and ignoring the concerns of the American people?

The healthcare reform legislation under consideration in the House will eventually force all Americans into a government-approved plan. After a five-year grace period, every new insurance policy will have to comply with government mandates, and any policy changes – “altering co-pays, deductibles, or even switching coverage for this or that drug” – invalidates your previous coverage and forces you to choose a government “qualified” plan. In addition, the House plan mandates coverage for every individual. If you are self-employed or choose not buy insurance for whatever reason, the bill imposes a “healthcare tax” of 2.5% of your income. (Source: CNNMoney.com, July 24, 2009 and Bloomberg.com, July 15, 2009)

Question for your Congressmen: Why do you believe bureaucrats can make better decisions than me about what kind of health insurance I should have? And will you guarantee that any healthcare reform bill passed by Congress will always allow me to choose my own doctor?

Do you care about the race of a doctor who is getting ready to operate on you? Of course not. Most Americans want their doctor to be the best professional available regardless of race or ethnic background. But congressional liberals have a different idea. On page 909 of the House bill, grants to medical schools will be awarded “to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following … training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds.” (Source: Investors Business Daily, July 27, 2009)

Question for your Congressmen: Why are you throwing affirmative action/racial set asides into a healthcare reform bill?

President Obama has repeatedly said that “no insurance company will be allowed to deny you coverage because of a pre-existing medical condition.” That sounds wonderful until you apply common sense, which is in short supply in Washington. What if we made a law that allowed you to buy car insurance after you got into an accident and that required the insurance company to pay for the damage? Wouldn’t many people just wait for an accident before buying insurance? Why wouldn’t many Americans wait until they were sick to buy health insurance?

Question for your Congressmen: Isn’t it clear that this provision would drive up the cost of health insurance for everyone?

Deal Or Disaster?

As I write, there are breaking reports of a possible deal on healthcare reform between liberal House Democrat leaders and the “moderate” Blue Dog Democrats, who have been resisting the ObamaCare socialized medicine bill. Details are sketchy. But I suspect there will be little for most Americans to cheer about, as any “deal” that passes Pelosi’s House will simply grease the skids for a government takeover of our healthcare. That would be a disaster for America and for future generations who will be burdened with crushing taxes.

Let me be clear about that, friends: Democrats control 60 votes in the Senate and roughly 60% of the votes in the House. They are the ones setting the agenda and calling the shots. Whatever “reform” bill that passes this Congress and is signed by this president won’t be good. More on that in the next item.

Obama’s “Science Fiction” Advisor

Many people are totally perplexed by the Obama Administration’s push to impose a massive “cap and trade” tax on energy production in the middle of a severe recession. By President Obama’s own admission, “under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates will necessarily skyrocket.” Cap and trade will kill jobs in energy-intensive industries like manufacturing, hike consumer prices on virtually every product, and may well push America over the brink from recession to depression. Why are we doing this? It could well be that President Obama is acting in part on the recommendations of his science advisor, Dr. John Holdren.

CNSNews reports that during the 1970s Holdren was an advocate of “de-development”. What is “de-development”? It’s exactly what it sounds like – a radical idea to destroy America’s economy, especially its industrial base, via environmental regulation. These “progressives” literally wanted to take us backwards in time economically. Don’t believe me? Consider this passage from his book:

“The need for de-development presents our economists with a major challenge. They must design a stable, low-consumption economy in which there is a much more equitable distribution of wealth than in the present one. Redistribution of wealth both within and among nations is absolutely essential, if a decent life is to be provided to every human being.”
He goes on to label certain technological advances as undesirable, things like “fission power, giant automobiles, plastic wrappings, genetic engineering, disposable packages and containers, synthetic pesticides…”, and adds that “the halcyon days of unquestioning public acceptance of technological ‘progress’ must disappear forever.”

In other words, capitalism is out; communism is in. Government bureaucrats and central planners will provide you a “decent life,” presumably with plenty of candles to light your hut. At least Holdren had enough common sense to understand that his workers’ paradise might present a major challenge to economists. That’s because centralized government planning doesn’t work. That’s why the Soviet Union no longer exists. I don’t want to try to recreate that failed experiment in socialism here.

The Obama Administration, with the support of most Democrats in Congress, is pushing a cap and trade scheme that will redistribute wealth through higher energy taxes on businesses and successful families and greatly facilitate the “de-development” of the United States.

Believe it or not, it gets worse. Two weeks ago I told you about Holdren’s support for “compulsory population control laws,” including “compulsory abortion.” Here’s more about his view of human life: “The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth, and given the essential early socializing experiences and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth, will ultimately develop into a human being.”

Did you catch that little nuance? In Holdren’s mind, a living baby “during the crucial early years after birth” is not yet fully human, but “will ultimately develop into a human being.” That kind of dehumanizing rationalization naturally leads one to support “compulsory abortion” and euthanasia. To the central planners, each life is not an asset, but rather a liability to Big Government’s bottom line. The passages in the ObamaCare bill about “end of life” counseling for our senior citizens could have been plagiarized from one Dr. Holdren’s books.

It’s shocking that this man survived the vetting process, and it speaks volumes about the administration in which he serves. Administration officials, including President Obama, should be forced to explain his appointment. Members of Congress should take every opportunity to put this man on the record about his beliefs. If Holdren does not repudiate his own writings, he should be forced to resign.

What Are They Hiding?

Today’s Washington Post has a story on Daniel Boyd, one of seven Muslim men arrested in North Carolina and accused of being part of a jihadist cell. According to the Post, Boyd grew up in the Washington, D.C., suburbs of Northern Virginia. He was “inspired” to convert to Islam by his stepfather, who is described by the Post as “a Washington area lawyer and devout Muslim.” He is now charged with teaching young men that “violent jihad was a personal obligation on the part of every good Muslim.” The Post also notes, “Boyd is the third American citizen indicted recently on charges surrounding domestic radicalism and overseas targets.” The common thread in these arrests is radical Islam.

In response to our report yesterday, one of our loyal readers emailed this YouTube video of ArabFest 2009. The event was held last month in Dearborn, Michigan. It is a ten minute video that shows what happened to a couple of folks who simply tried to ask some questions of those attending the festival. It is shocking, and it left me asking the question, “What are they trying to hide?”

Growing Reasons For Optimism

It has been a tough six months for those of us who are pro-life, pro-family, want smaller government, lower taxes and a strong national defense. The Obama Administration has subjected the country to what one GOP Governor has called “shock and awe” statism. Nationalized healthcare is still a 50-50 possibility, and the socialists running Washington, D.C., have many more plans on the drawing board to limit your freedoms, take your money, and undermine your values. That’s the bad news. Here is the good news: There are signs that a backlash is building against Obama and the radical Left. Consider the following:

* There are two states holding elections for governor this November – New Jersey and Virginia. Both states have Democrat governors and Obama won both in 2008. Currently, the Republican candidates have double digit leads in the polls. CWF will devote significant resources to both races.

* In other key states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania and Iowa, the approval ratings of liberal Democrat governors are plummeting as state budgets sink deeper into the red.

* Looking ahead to the congressional elections next year, more voters now say they will vote Republican than Democrat. In addition, strong conservative GOP candidates are challenging liberal incumbents around the country.

* President Obama, seen as a political giant 90 days ago, is dropping quickly in the polls. In many areas of the country he now appears to be a political liability that some Democrat candidates are running away from.

None of this is “written in stone” of course. Polls change. The Left could outspend us in the elections. Conservatives and Republicans could keep shooting at each other, instead of closing ranks and focusing on beating the Obama socialists. But if we can avoid the pitfalls and stay focused, we could be celebrating this November and beyond.

Jihad Watch

The Obama Administration, devoting its energy to browbeating Israel, continues to downplay the threat from Islamofascism. Meanwhile, here’s a brief review of today’s headlines from the “front lines.”

* Yesterday in Falls Church, Virginia, just 8 miles from the White House, Ahmed Omar Abu Ali was sentenced to life in prison for his role in an Al-Qaeda conspiracy to kill President Bush. Ali was valedictorian of the Islamic Saudi Academy in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. The Islamic Saudi Academy has been regularly criticized for exposing students to radical textbooks. As the convicted terrorist left the courtroom, he was cheered by a large crowd of supporters. I hope the FBI was taking photos.

* In North Carolina, seven Muslim men were charged with being part of a jihadist cell that planned a series of attacks abroad. Several of them are Muslim converts, including Daniel Patrick Boyd, who traveled to Israel in 2007 hoping to pull off attacks there. Boyd lived in a lakeside home in a rural area near Raleigh, where he and his family ran a dry-wall business while learning to wage war for Allah at night.

Exterminators will tell you that if you see a roach in your home it almost always means you have hundreds more breeding in the dark places between the walls. How many more jihadists do we have living among us? How many Saudi-funded schools and mosques are teaching hatred right under our nose? The Obama Justice Department might want to spend fewer dollars trying to put former Bush officials in jail and more dollars protecting the homeland.

Obama’s “Teachable Moment”

Last week, President Obama called the Cambridge cop controversy a “teachable moment, where all of us . . . spend a little more time listening to each other and try to focus on how we can generally improve relations between police officers and minority communities.” Today, it was reported that Sgt. Crowley and Professor Gates will join the president at the White House Thursday.

I hope the president will do more listening than talking this time. His prejudiced remarks about the Cambridge police “acting stupidly” were insulting and cost him at least one vote. Click here to watch a remarkable CNN interview in which two black police officers defend Sgt. Crowley.

Culture Of Corruption

The Associated Press is reporting that key congressional Democrats knowingly received “VIP mortgage discounts” from Countrywide Financial Corporation, the company at the epicenter of the nation’s subprime mortgage crisis. The lawmakers in question are Senators Kent Conrad, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, and Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

In testimony before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Robert Feinberg, a former Countrywide employee, made it clear that both Conrad and Dodd knew they were getting preferential treatment. Feinberg also testified before the Senate Ethics Committee, which is “an indication the panel is actively investigating two of the chamber’s more powerful members.” Conrad will not face the voters until 2012, but Dodd is up for reelection next year.

With President Obama currently enjoying a 63% approval rating in Connecticut, the Nutmeg State will be a tough nut to crack for any Republican seeking statewide office. But one independent poll released last week showed Dodd losing by nine points to the leading Republican challenger, former Representative Rob Simmons. Clearly, Connecticut voters have not become conservatives, but his cozy relationship with Countrywide may have doomed Chris Dodd.

RNC Targeting Vulnerable Democrats

Despite being outnumbered in Congress by a huge Democrat majority, the Republican Party is successfully fighting Barack Obama’s socialized health care bill. Republicans in Congress have remained united in their opposition to ObamaCare. The GOP realizes how this radical legislation would change our country’s future. Now, the RNC is stepping up its efforts with $1 million in radio ads targeting 60 vulnerable Democrats. The radio ads will focus on the swing states of Arizona, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. In addition, the RNC is running television ads in Arkansas, Nevada and North Dakota.

According to RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho, “The Democrats targeted by the RNC radio ad have campaigned on fiscal responsibility, and now these Democrats are being held accountable to their campaign promises as they prepare to vote on a government-run health care bill that will cost American taxpayers $1.6 trillion, add to the record budget deficit and burden American families and small businesses with higher taxes.”

I hope the pressure from these ads on the targeted lawmakers will be effective. Congressmen know that their constituents are the ones who ultimately determine their political futures, not Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid.

Pelosi vs. The People

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went on CNN Sunday to talk about healthcare reform. She was adamantly upbeat, saying, “When I take this bill to the floor, it will win. We will move forward, it will happen.” Pelosi also said that she doesn’t care how despised she is. Tyrants tend to be unpopular, and Pelosi has ruled the House of Representatives with an iron first. Her leadership team has been in constant “negotiations” with the “moderate” Blue Dog Democrats. And the Blue Dogs will need healthcare when this debate is over, because Pelosi will have twisted many arms and pulled them out of their sockets by the end of the week to fulfill her promise of a “win” on ObamaCare.

Meanwhile, on the other side of Capitol Hill, Senator Kent Conrad, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, said on ABC this weekend, “Look, there are not the votes for Democrats to do this just on our side of the aisle.” That’s an astonishing admission given that Democrats hold 60 votes in the Senate. It also shows just how unpopular the idea of socializing our healthcare system really is.

But we can’t assume this fight is over. We cannot underestimate the assets of this White House and the determination of radical Left. You can be assured that George Soros and others are working the phones, pulling out all the stops to advance their agenda. If the vote on ObamaCare is delayed, Democrats will be back in the fall.

That means the battle moves to your home turf – to the town hall meetings that will take place throughout the August recess. And you – “we the people” – can win this fight by making your voice heard. Find friends who share our values and go to these meetings. Speak up and challenge your elected public servants. They work for you, not the other way around. Most of them have no idea what is in the bill and will be hard-pressed to defend it.

Another Liberal Confesses: He Doesn’t Read Legislation

The American people’s outrage continues to grow over members of Congress who don’t read the legislation they are voting on. It is inexcusable for an elected public servant to fail in this primary responsibility, especially when the legislation will impact every citizen and generations of Americans for years to come. Can you imagine any doctor being so callous as to admit that he doesn’t bother to read his patients’ medical files? Amazingly, some members of Congress don’t even see the problem with their negligent behavior.

Representative John Conyers (D-MI), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, recently questioned the point of reading the health care bill. “I love these members, they get up and say, ‘Read the bill.’ What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?” Rep. Conyers is one of the most liberal members of Congress. In fact, he introduced a bill to setup a “truth commission” to investigate former President Bush. His arrogance summarizes the Left’s philosophy: Details don’t matter; the ends justify the means.

The Democrat leadership realizes that if all members of Congress had time to review the bills they vote on, most probably would not pass. Congressmen who do read the bills have a hard time understanding what they mean. As long as this trend continues, the legislation Congress passes will lose its legitimacy, democracy will be undermined in the eyes of the public and the politicians will find it increasingly difficult to justify their six-figure salaries. In fact, by their own admission, many don’t know what they are doing and, therefore, aren’t earning their paychecks. Hopefully, their employers – the voters – will fire scores of liberal incumbents next November!

A Bad July For “O”

It feels as if it was just yesterday that Obama’s approval ratings were through the roof on Inauguration Day. But it has been a very bad July for Barack Obama. Sunday and Monday’s Rasmussen Daily Presidential Tracking Poll recorded the first time his Presidential Approval Index hit negative double digits: -11 on Sunday and -10 today.

The American people woke up and started paying attention to Obama’s political agenda. On Inauguration Day, just 15% of voters strongly disapproved of Obama. Today, 40% strongly disapprove, while only 30% strongly approve of his performance as president, down from 45%. It is also interesting to note that 76% of likely voters view Obama as politically liberal. According to Rasmussen, “48% now see him as very liberal, up 20 points since he was elected.”

This suggests that even with the media’s adoration, Barack Obama is beatable. I admit that polls are just a snapshot in time and unforeseen events can dramatically alter the political landscape. But don’t give up, my friends! The tide appears to be turning in our favor.

Contempt And The GOP

As Sarah Palin was exiting the governor’s mansion in Alaska for undetermined future plans, the Washington Times ran an op-ed I wrote on the undetermined future of the marriage between social conservatives and the GOP. If this marriage is to survive, one thing is certain: The contempt against social conservatives like Palin must end. You can read the column online at http://www.washingtontimes.com.

Overdrive On ObamaCare

Amid collapsing poll numbers and increasing nervousness on Capitol Hill, the Obama Administration is shifting into overdrive to pass ObamaCare while it can. Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims she has the votes in the House, which according to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, will vote on a reform bill next week. Meanwhile, the president has hit a bump in the road in the Senate. It had be to very embarrassing for him to hold a press conference on the need for urgent action on healthcare reform only to have the Senate Democrat Leader announce hours later that nothing would happen on the issue in the upper chamber anytime soon.

But we are not letting our guard down. This administration will twist arms and legs if it has to get this massive takeover of our nation’s healthcare system passed into law. For example, Senator Tom Coburn told the Wall Street Journal that the pressure from the White House on healthcare groups has been “intense, bordering on extortion.” Newt Gingrich said, “Groups were told if they [opposed ObamaCare] they’d give up their seat at the table. What they weren’t told is that they’d be at the table as lunch.”

The only thing that can stop them is YOU! The American people are scared to death of the growing debt and deficits, and by how much money this president is spending. I know many Americans were outraged by the spending of the previous administration. Let me remind you of how the Associated Press described Obama’s spending plans: “President Barack Obama’s budget would produce … more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush’s presidency.” And no one is accusing the Associated Press of being a card-carrying member of the “vast rightwing conspiracy.”

No one believes this president when he says ObamaCare will be paid for by taxing millionaires. No one believes him when he says the government can do it cheaper and more efficiently than the private sector. In fact, a recent study by the Pacific Research Institute surveyed healthcare spending over the past four decades and found that government spending in Medicaid and Medicare is one-third higher than private sector healthcare spending. Simply put: Government costs more; ObamaCare will cost more.

TAKE ACTION: As the House prepares for a vote next week, please contact your elected officials in Washington. Click here to urge your representative and senators to oppose ObamaCare. And please urge your friends and family members to take action too!

Obama Hits Cops, Part II

The president is in a hole, but he keeps on digging. He couldn’t resist telling ABC last night, “I have to say I am surprised by the controversy surrounding my statement because I think it was a pretty straightforward comment that you probably don’t need to handcuff a guy, a middle-aged man, who uses a cane, who is in his own home.” Well, Mr. President, there is a controversy because you inserted yourself into a local police matter without knowing the facts, said the police acted stupidly and then suggested the whole incident was part of a long history of racism.

As the day wore on, more and more information came out about Sgt. James Crowley, the man the president chose to bash on national television. He is an exemplary police officer, a professional who actually taught other police officers how to avoid racial profiling. He was chosen for that teaching assignment on the recommendation of a black former police commissioner. Tapes of the incident, which reportedly show the officer did the right thing, are supposed to be released today.

But here’s what I find most disturbing. In his six months of on-the-job training, our apprentice president has given a lot of questionable characters the benefit of the doubt. He reached out to Iran, wants to make nice with Ahmadinejad, let Venezuela send diplomats to Washington, told Russia we will change our foreign policy, bowed to the Saudi king and the list goes on. But he just can’t bring himself to give the benefit of the doubt to a police officer who everyone says is one of the best of the best. I think our president needs to add the Cambridge Police Department to his worldwide apology tour, which is exactly what the Cambridge Police Union is now demanding of the president.

BREAKING NOW: In an effort to stop the hemorrhaging, President Obama just made his third statement on the cop controversy. (I can only imagine what the internal White House polls are indicating if the president felt it necessary to speak up again.) Obama stopped short of apologizing and now says that both men – the cop and the professor – were wrong and overreacted. He also stated that the public reaction to the incident proves America needs a public discussion on race. That’s fine, but I don’t think we should start it by accusing the men and women on the thin blue line of racism!

Obama Disses Doctors Too

During his health care press conference Wednesday night, Barack Obama successfully insulted not only policemen, but also doctors. When asked how his health care plan would reduce costs, Obama responded with this scenario: “You come in and you’ve got a bad sore throat, or your child has a bad sore throat or has repeated sore throats, the doctor may look at the reimbursement system and say to himself, you know what, I make a lot more money if I take this kid’s tonsils out.”

Not only was Obama’s insinuation offensive to pediatricians, but it was also wrong. Pediatricians do not perform tonsillectomies. Once they determine that surgery is necessary, they refer patients to a trusted surgeon. But the episode demonstrated yet again the president’s disturbing instinct to slander his opponents and to see government as the sole solution to every problem. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Wall Street, banks, energy executives, cops or doctors — all those “bad actors” must be brought to heel by the brute force of Big Government.

Still Falling

According to the daily Rasmussen tracking poll, Barack Obama’s approval ratings are continuing to spiral downward. Thirty-eight percent of the American people strongly disapprove of the job President Obama is doing, while 30% strongly approve. This ties his previous low of -8 on the Rasmussen Presidential Approval Index (the difference between those who strongly approve and strongly disapprove of his job performance). What’s even more interesting about these results is Obama’s total approval rating. Now, just 49% somewhat approve of the president’s performance, while 51% disapprove. This is the first time his overall approval has dipped below 50%.

These numbers are averaged based on three days of polling. Two of these days were done before Obama’s national press conference Wednesday night. It would not surprise me to see these numbers get even worse for the president given the way he is handling the Sgt. Crowley controversy.

Here’s more news from Rasmussen that must be worrying the White House. In a hypothetical 2012 matchup, Barack Obama leads Alaska Governor Sarah Palin but only narrowly at 48%-to-42%. Meanwhile, the president is tied with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 45% each. And here’s more news that must have Nancy Pelosi reaching for the Pepto: In Rasmussen’s weekly question on control of Congress for 2010, Republicans now lead Democrats by 42%-to-38% — the highest level of support Rasmussen has measured for the GOP in more than two years.
