$900 Million For Palestinians
Our unemployment rate is heading toward 10%. Each page of the 1,000 page healthcare bill will cost another $1 billion of your tax money. Our deficit is increasing so fast that experts are starting to ask, “What comes after trillion?” In view of this financial mess, I thought you might want to know what Obama and Hillary think is a really great use of another $900 million of your money.
They are sending it to those lovely folks in the Palestinian Authority. You know, the Jew-haters and America-bashers we regularly see on TV. Two hundred million dollars was sent on July 24th, and the Obama Administration held a special teleconference to announce the “good news” to our Palestinian “allies.” The money is supposed to stay out of the hands of terrorists and be used for job creation. If you believe that, I have a great bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
Here’s the point: Sending your tax dollars to the Palestinians is a bad idea even in good times. Every poll shows the Palestinians hate us, no matter how much money we send them. But it is even more wrong-headed to send so much money when our country is on the ropes economically. President Obama should cancel the remaining $700 million and use it for job growth in communities like Palestine, Pennsylvania, where American families are hurting.
Targeting Insurance Companies
Since Barack Obama took office, his top priority has been to grant government greater control over our lives. First it was the government takeover of General Motors. Then it was telling American businesses how big of a “carbon footprint” they can leave. Now it’s trying to direct what kind of health care you and your family can get. But with their planned healthcare takeover floundering, Washington’s socialists are recalibrating their argument.
Yesterday during her weekly press conference, Speaker Nancy Pelosi attacked private insurance companies. “They (private insurers) are the villains in this. They have been part of the problem in a major way. They are doing everything in their power to stop a public option from happening. And the public has to know that. They can disguise their arguments in any way they want, but the fact is that they don’t want the competition. It’s almost immoral what they’re doing.”
Once again, the Left is reverting to its old habits – attacking business and free enterprise. Some Americans may be unhappy with their insurance company. But, if you ask them if they would rather have government-run health insurance or the private plan they have now, overwhelmingly they would say they want to keep their current plan. The Democrats know their socialized healthcare scheme is losing steam, so they are going to attack private insurers. Don’t fall for it.
By the way, Democrats are so determined to make you pay for abortions through ObamaCare that Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, invoked a special rule yesterday that allows the chairman to order a second vote hours later. Here’s what happened: An amendment to ban abortion funding in the healthcare reform bill initially passed, much to Waxman’s surprise. So, he ordered a new vote. One Blue Dog Democrat, Bart Gordon of Tennessee, switched his vote from “yes” to “no” and another Blue Dog who missed the first vote, Zach Space of Ohio, was present for the second vote and he too voted “no.” That killed the pro-life amendment 30-to-29.
Return Of The Black Panthers
As President Obama was hosting the Beer Summit at the White House, attempting to diffuse a racial controversy sparked by his own comments, another controversy was returning to the front pages. Two months ago, the Washington Times broke the story that political appointees in the Obama Justice Department had overruled career lawyers and stopped the prosecution of members of the New Black Panther Party charged with voter intimidation during the 2008 election.
The Times has stayed on this story, and yesterday reported the name of the official who ordered the case dismissed, “Associate Attorney General Thomas J. Perrelli, the department’s No. 3 political appointee.” Today, the Times reports that one of the Black Panthers named in the voter intimidation complaint “obtained new credentials as a poll watcher ‘at any ward/division in Philadelphia’ just days after the charges against him were dismissed.”
Congressional Republicans have been demanding answers from Attorney General Eric Holder, and they are now demanding that he refile the case. Virginia Representative Frank Wolf said, “In all fairness, he [Holder] has a duty to protect those seeking to vote and I remain deeply troubled by this questionable dismissal of an important voter-intimidation case in Philadelphia.” In addition, Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, has asked repeatedly that the career Justice prosecutors be allowed to tell their side of the story. A meeting among top Justice officials involved in the case, Rep. Smith and John Conyers, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, was canceled yesterday and has been rescheduled for next month.
I’m glad to see congressional conservatives fighting hard to defend our cherished freedoms like the right to vote and holding government officials accountable in the administration of justice. But the handling of this case is just another reminder of the myriad ways in which elections have consequences. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments as we learn them.
Why Social Conservatives Should Oppose EFCA
In my Human Events column today, I examine the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), the misnamed bill currently being considered by Congress that may, among other things, get rid of the secret ballot for unionization. But, if it becomes law, EFCA would affect social issues, like the definition of marriage and the right to life. In fact, EFCA could prove lucrative for labor unions and all their liberal causes. Find out how by reading my column at: http://www.humanevents.com. Thank you.
