Jed Babbin, editor of Human Events is reporting that the Obama White House has overridden objections from an internal inter-agency panel, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security and ordered the release of 17 Chinese Muslim Uighurs from GITMO. The 17 were captured at an Al Qaeda training camp. The men may be released as early as next week, perhaps in the metro Washington, D.C. area. Do you feel safer? That’s a question that GOP is asking in a new web video.

“Courting Mr. Chavez”

The Washington Post devoted its lead editorial today to trying to shame President Obama for his appeasement of Hugo Chavez’s increasing repression in Venezuela. Good luck. This week a leading political opponent, who ran against Chavez in 2006, had to seek asylum in Peru after Chavez shouted on television, “I am going to put you in jail!” Every Chavez opponent is being subjected to trumped-up criminal investigations [truth commissions?], while Obama and Hillary remain silent. In fact, our State Department praised Chavez yesterday for his desire to exchange ambassadors.

President Bush consistently spoke out in favor of democracy for the people of Latin America. The Left and Big Media called him a “Gringo Cowboy” for his efforts. Now we have a “progressive” in the White House who is being praised for his new less aggressive foreign policy. That new foreign policy surrenders America’s moral authority in its silence on repression, and will inevitably result in less freedom for the people of Latin America.

In short, Barack Obama is making friends with tyrants while abandoning democratic movements. Some recent Latin American immigrants to the United States, who came here for economic and political freedom, might want to start asking themselves why they overwhelmingly voted for Obama in November.

Swine Flu Panic?

In reaction to the growing number of cases of swine flu infection, the World Health Organization has raised is pandemic alert to Level 5. (The highest is Level 6.) Mexico, the epicenter of the swine flu, has ordered schools closed until May 6th and will be closing government offices and businesses for several days next week. Here in America, the number of cases of swine flu has spread to 11 states and there is a report of one suspected case in Washington, D.C. today. But, for whatever reason, the manner in which the administration is handling this issue seems highly contradictory.

Yesterday, President Obama said that “schools with confirmed cases … should consider closing.” Today, it was announced that Fort Worth will be shutting all schools for ten days. But to my knowledge, the border with Mexico, the epicenter of this outbreak, remains open with no slowdown in traffic. Isn’t that on its face a major contradiction? This may turnout to be nothing, but why are we shutting down schools and leaving the border wide open?

On the Today Show this morning, Vice President Biden put his foot so far in his mouth it disappeared. Here’s what he said:
“I would tell members of my family — and I have — I wouldn’t go anywhere in confined places now. It’s not that it’s going to Mexico. It’s [that] you’re in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft. …I would not be, at this point, if they had another way of transportation suggesting they ride the subway. So, from my perspective, what it relates to is mitigation. If you’re out in the middle of a field when someone sneezes, that’s one thing. If you’re in a closed aircraft or closed container or closed car or closed classroom, it’s a different thing.”
Wow! Obviously, the vice president didn’t clear that statement with the “energy and climate czar” first. I thought we were supposed to be taking public transportation to reduce our “carbon footprint.” Within an hour, the vice president’s staff was issuing a “clarification” – probably his 50th in the first 101 days!

Now, while Vice President Biden is in panic mode — telling Americans to stay off airplanes, buses and subways — scientists are telling the Los Angeles Times that the swine flu may turn out to be a dud as a killer virus. The Times writes, “In fact, the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus [swine flu] … may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur [and kill over 35,000] each winter without much fanfare.”

Who are we to believe? Do reporters at the Los Angeles Times have more information than the vice president? Or does he know something the scientists don’t?

America’s Voluntarily State-Controlled Media

To say that the media is biased in favor of Obama is not just hyperbole. It is a fact proven by three separate studies that looked at how the president has been treated in nightly news broadcasts during his 100 days.

The first study, conducted by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, found that ABC, CBS and NBC devoted 28 hours of coverage to President Obama during his first 50 days in office. The same networks gave Democrat Bill Clinton 15 hours and 7 hours and 42 minutes to George W. Bush. But more is not always better, unless you are “The One.” For example, of Bill Clinton’s 15 hours, 44% contained positive evaluations. Not surprisingly, George W. Bush only got 33% favorable coverage in his 7 hours and 42 minutes. But the Center found that 58% of Obama’s 28 hours were favorable!

The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism surveyed seven national media outlets for two months and found that “Positive stories about Obama outweighed negative ones by a two-to-one margin (42 percent vs. 20 percent).” Pew found that Bill Clinton got 27% positive coverage, while Mr. Bush got 22%.

Our friends at the Media Research Center surveyed 852 news stories that aired between January 20th and April 15th. They found that the media studiously avoided labeling any of President Obama’s policies as liberal or socialist. Not the bank bailouts or the auto bailouts, not even “universal health care.” In fact, they went even further, “The networks never had a single sound bite from a conservative or a free market expert.” In other words, the media willingly silenced Obama’s critics.

Amazing. America’s Big Media networks have voluntarily done what most dictators have to force journalists in their countries to do: Provide hours and hours of fawning, uncritical and unquestioning coverage of the “dear leader.”

Erasing a Generation of Pro-Family Advances

Human Events published a special edition yesterday looking back at the first 100 days of the Obama Administration. I wrote a column noting how aggressively Obama has moved in that short period of time to undo everything pro-family, pro-life conservatives have fought for in the past generation. You can read and comment on my column here.

Good News!

As I wrote earlier this morning, today is Obama’s 100th day in office and Left is celebrating. But that’s no reason for conservatives to be demoralized. If anything, it should motivate us to work even harder, and I’ve got some good news to share with you. But, first, I’m asking again for each supporter of our work to go to our website at http://www.cwfpac.com and make a special gift of $100 to mark Barack Obama’s 100th day in office.

Now, here’s the good news. After having been tied for the past two weeks, the Republican Party now leads the Democrat Party for control of Congress in next year’s elections, 41%-to-38%, according to the latest Rasmussen poll.

In addition, there has been a second poll in recent days testing the idea of “balance.” Pollster Glen Bolger asked voters whether they would prefer a congressional candidate who helps Barack Obama and the Democrats pass their agenda or a congressional candidate who would be a check and balance to Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress. By a margin of 56%-to-34%, voters preferred the candidate who would be a check and balance to Obama and the Democrats.

This is encouraging news, my friends! The American people are waking up to the dangers of Democrat dominance in Washington. Now we must raise the necessary resources to take full advantage of these shifting attitudes.

So please click here to make your most generous gift to Campaign for Working Families today!

And we’ve also posted our list of Obama’s 100 Mistakes, Misstatements and Missteps in his first 100 days online at http://www.cwfpac.com. Please share it with friends and family members!

100 Days, 100 Mistakes

Today the radical Left is celebrating Barack Obama’s 100th day in the White House. To honor the occasion, I am asking all of our supporters to go to our website at http://www.cwfpac.com and make a special gift of $100. We need $100 to help us fight Obama’s 100 mistakes in his first 100 days.

Go right now to our secured website and make your gift of $100 to support our work. If you prefer, you can call our office at 703-671-8800 to make a contribution over the phone or mail a check to the address below.

If you can’t afford to give $100 today, please make a commitment to support CWF with a monthly contribution of $10 or $25, which you can also do online by selecting the “monthly” option in the payment section.

If you can afford to give more, please do so, because while the Obama Administration is celebrating its first 100 days in power, there are still 1,361 days left in his first term! And when you see everything that he has done in these first 100 days, you will be shocked and outraged.

Men and women of faith, national security conservatives and those who cherish free enterprise must stand up and fight back. That task has been made more difficult and more urgent in the past 24 hours with the defection of Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania. But don’t despair. We must unapologetically defend our values of lower taxes, smaller government, peace through strength and respect for time-honored traditional values.

While polls show that Barack Obama is personally popular, the nation is still divided right down the middle or leans our way on key issues. Where our side has been lacking most is in leadership, funding and grassroots volunteers. That’s why I’m asking for your urgent support today: so we can help conservative candidates defeat pro-abortion, pro-homosexual rights, pro-Big Government candidates. Please support CWF today with a special gift of $100 or a commitment of $100.

Today, Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter announced that he was switching parties and running for reelection as a Democrat. Once Al Franken is seated as the next senator from Minnesota, as he presumably will be, Democrats will hold 60 seats in the Senate, giving them and President Obama a level of control not seen among the Democrats since the Carter “malaise.”

In his statement today, Specter said, “My change in party affiliation does not mean that I will be a party-line voter any more for the Democrats that I have been for the Republicans. Unlike Senator Jeffords’ switch which changed party control, I will not be an automatic 60th vote for cloture. For example, my position on Employees Free Choice (Card Check) will not change.” We’ll see how tolerant the Left is willing to be of Specter’s liberal heresies.

While Specter has outraged all of us at times, I believe it is also true that without his support it is very doubtful that we would have gotten Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito or Chief Justice Roberts confirmed to the Supreme Court. But my real sympathy goes to the countless Republican voters in Pennsylvania who remained loyal to Specter even when he disappointed them on key issues. Moreover, he said just last month that he would not switch parties. Evidently, their loyalty to the Republican Party was always stronger than the senator’s.

“Scare Force One”

Around 10:00 AM yesterday morning, panic hit New York City as a low-flying jumbo jet was seen circling lower Manhattan as it was trailed by Air Force fighter jets. Buildings were ordered to evacuate and thousands poured into the streets as the nightmares of 9/11 were made real once again.

But as it turns out, it was all just a photo-op for the Obama White House, which did a terribly poor job of informing local authorities of the event. One New York politician said, “In New York of all places, not to warn the public that one of the largest jets in the country tailed by a fighter jet is going to fly low over their community defies logic and really borders on being either cruel or very, very stupid.”

It’s not very often that I agree with Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), but he nailed it. Not only was the fly over “very, very stupid,” but it once again demonstrates the degree to which this administration is operating in a pre-9/11 mindset. Why should jumbo jets circling lower Manhattan bother anybody? This White House is clueless.

The White House Military Office director issued an apology for “any distress the flight caused.” Evidently, the Defense Department wanted to update its photo file of Air Force One against scenic backdrops of America’s most famous landscapes. This event was meant to capture Air Force One with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

I want to give the good folks at the Pentagon the benefit of the doubt here. My best guess is that previous photos included the Twin Towers in the background. But why couldn’t someone use computers to “photo shop” the desired image? That would have made far more sense in this case, and spared the people of New York City a great deal of anxiety. Not to mention the waste of taxpayer money and – gasp! – the carbon emissions for this photo op. If the Bush White House had done something this stupid, we would have heard about it forever. But look for this “gaffe” to fade away quickly.

Do You Want Socialized Health Care?

Democrats in Congress, with the full support of the Obama White House, are set to ram through “reconciliation” rules this week that will set the stage for nationalized health care. I don’t want to bore you with the details of congressional rules, but here’s the bottom line: Democrats are using parliamentary tricks to fast-track the president’s socialized health care scheme in the budget.

This maneuver denies the rights of the minority party to filibuster bad legislation, thereby allowing socialized health care to pass the Senate with limited debate and just 51 votes, instead of 60. The result will be yet another government takeover of a major sector of our economy, higher taxes and rationing of health care. In response to these heavy-handed tactics, Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) said, “I can understand shaking Hugo Chavez’s hand, but I cannot understand embracing his politics.”

A new Rasmussen poll finds that only 29% of Americans believe that government-run health care can provide better service and they are right to be skeptical. Writing in The Hill yesterday, Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), a doctor, noted how people in socialized health systems are treated in order to control costs:
“Consider Canadian patients, who may wait a year or longer to get radiation therapy. Or ask one of the nearly 1.8 million Britons who are waiting to get into a hospital or have an outpatient procedure. Or talk to the German breast cancer patients who are 52 percent more likely to die from the disease than Americans.”
TAKE ACTION: Call your members of Congress at 202-224-3121 and tell them to oppose the Obama budget, which spends too much and tries to socialize our health care system.

More On The Memos

Government has one primary function and that is to provide for our national defense. Sadly, there is a lot of confusion about that obligation in Washington today. A number of you have sent me misleading emails from members of Congress or concerned notes about media reporting on the CIA memos and the methods used by the Bush Administration to protect America after 9/11. With the radical Left and some key members of Congress demanding “truth commissions” and special prosecutors, I think it is important for you to get as much information as possible on this crucial issue, so I am revisiting it again today.

In a previous report, I noted how the waterboarding of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) prevented a “second wave” attack against skyscrapers in Los Angeles. But evidently there was much more. Writing in today’s Wall Street Journal, columnist Bret Stephens highlights selected passages of former CIA Director George Tenet’s memoir, “At the Center of the Storm.” For those who may not recall, Tenet was appointed CIA director by Bill Clinton. Just consider what President Clinton’s CIA director had to say about this subject:
“I believe none of these successes [in foiling terrorist plots] would have happened if we had had to treat KSM like a white-collar criminal — read him his Miranda rights and get him a lawyer who surely would have insisted his client simply shut up. …Apparently he thought he would be immediately shipped to the United States and indicted in the Southern District of New York. Had that happened, I am confident that we would have obtained none of the information he had in his head about imminent threats to the American people. …

“From our interrogation of KSM and other senior al Qaeda members . . . we learned many things… For example, more than 20 plots had been put in motion by al Qaeda against U.S. infrastructure targets, including communications nodes, nuclear power plants, dams, bridges and tunnels.”
Leftwing Democrats may be confused about what is appropriate to do in the defense of America, but the American people are not. A new Gallup poll finds that 55% of Americans say they support the interrogation methods used during the Bush Administration, while 36% do not. Among Americans who have closely followed the memo controversy, the percentage supporting the Bush Administration policies rises to 61%.

Swine Flu

The outbreak of swine flu in Mexico has claimed at least 100 lives and effectively shut down the nation’s capital, Mexico City. More than 1,600 people are being treated in hospitals for flu-like symptoms throughout Mexico. Cases of the disease are popping up all over the world: Israel, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, and there have been 40 confirmed cases here in the United States, in California, Kansas, Ohio, New York and Texas.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano held an unusual Sunday press conference at the White House to declare a “national health emergency.” Meanwhile, the Health Commissioner for the European Union issued a statement urging Europeans to cancel travel plans to the United States and Mexico “unless it is very urgent.” The Associated Press reports that “Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan said they would quarantine visitors showing symptoms of the virus amid a surging global concern about a possible pandemic.” And Japan, Thailand and Indonesia are installing thermal scanners to check people for fevers at key airports.

Now, here’s some perspective. Nobody knows how serious this may turn out to be. So far, there are more than 100 deaths, all of them in Mexico. But, according to the Centers for Disease Control, “Every year in the United States, on average 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu; more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and; about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes.” But this flu has mutated from three different strains of swine, avian and human flu, and that has health officials unnerved.

Having said all that, the reaction of the Obama Administration strikes me as odd. In the middle of the day yesterday, the Secretary of Homeland Security held a press conference to declare a national health emergency. What would you expect to happen in a national health emergency? Closing the border until we figure out why the Mexican strain is worse? Travel restrictions, like the EU is suggesting? Deploying thermal scanners like those in Japan?

So far, we’re doing none of that. All we’re being told to do is wash our hands and cover our mouths when we cough. That’s what we tell kindergarteners. By the way, we go into this potential pandemic with no Secretary of Health and Human Services, the top 18 positions at HHS vacant and no Surgeon General.

At least one member of Congress is demanding that we close the border. Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) issued a statement in which he wrote, “The public needs to be aware of the serious threat of swine flu, and we need to close our borders to Mexico immediately and completely until this is resolved. …I am making this announcement because I see this as a serious threat to the health of the American public and I do not believe this issue is receiving the attention it needs to have in the news.”

A Bailout For Terrorists?

Today’s Los Angeles Times reports that the Obama Administration has asked Congress to water down a law that prevents taxpayer dollars from going to designated terrorist groups so that it can deliver millions of your hard-earned dollars to the terrorists in Hamas. The money is intended to help the Palestinian Authority with reconstruction efforts in Gaza after Israel’s 22-day battle to root out the terrorists who were launching thousands of rockets from Gaza at Israeli cities. But Gaza is controlled by Hamas, not the Palestinian Authority.

This is just one more example of the myriad ways in which Washington wastes your money. For years, Washington pressured Israel to give up “land for peace.” So, Israel gave up Gaza and, in return, Hamas thugs used it as a launching pad for thousands of rocket attacks against Israel. Now Obama wants you to pay for the mess that Hamas created and which Washington foolishly insisted upon.

Persecuting Bush?

President Obama’s abrupt about-face last week on the possibility of prosecuting Bush Administration officials for “enhanced interrogation techniques” has some pundits wondering where this is headed. President Obama told CIA agents that no one at the CIA would be prosecuted for using the now banned techniques, but he later said that he would leave it up to the Attorney General if those who formulated the policies, who advised that these techniques did not violate laws against torture, could be prosecuted for wrong doing.

So the “torturers” get a pass, but the lawyers at the Bush Justice Department get prosecuted for giving bad advice? That amounts to the criminalization of politics and public policy, which will have a chilling effect on our national security. It is a horrible standard for any administration to set, especially one that talked so much about bi-partisanship. Moreover, to many people that logic doesn’t just add up.

On the McLaughlin Group this weekend, commentator Pat Buchanan observed, “This cat is out of the bag and he [Obama] can’t walk it back. He has opened the door to the prosecution of the lawyers. …However, you can’t prosecute lawyers for giving honest opinions without going after the people who made the decisions that ordered the waterboarding done and the one who did that ultimately is the decider himself, George W. Bush.” It has long been the goal of the loony Left to convict George Bush for “war crimes.” Has Obama given the green light?

Personnel Is Policy

Most of the time I report on the headlines impacting “big picture” issues – the sanctity of marriage, the right to life, national security, the threat from Islamofascism, Big Government, etc. But though the Obama Administration is making thousands of appointments throughout the bureaucracy that may seem mundane and inconsequential today, they will have a major impact on the “big picture” issues you and I care about. One of President Obama’s recent appointments, Rosa Brooks, has been called “A disaster for Defense.”

Brooks will soon be working in the Pentagon as an adviser to the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy. This office has been described as “the nerve center producing most of the Defense Department’s strategic documents and governing policies.” It is a key office and Brooks is assuming a key position. What exactly is on her resume?

Well, she’s been a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, where she frequently called President Bush a “war criminal,” and once wrote that President Bush and Vice President Cheney “should be treated like psychotics who need treatment.” She also dismissed Al Qaeda as “little more than an obscure group of extremist thugs.” And she labeled the surge in Iraq as “a feckless plan” that was “too little, too late.”

But there’s more. She’s also a law professor. (Just what the Pentagon needs – another lawyer!) She’s been on the board of Amnesty International, and she once served as special counsel to the president of the Open Society Institute. What’s that, you ask? Oh, that’s just George Soros’ foundation, which funds just about every leftwing outfit in existence today. Obama’s installation of one of George Soros’ leftwing acolytes to this key Pentagon post is, as the Washington Times put it, “like making Jane Fonda a senior adviser on Vietnam.”

Liberal Know-Nothings

Last Friday, I wrote about the reaction of the liberal media, political and Hollywood elites to the Tea Parties. Leftwing politicians denounced them as “shameful,” “despicable,” and “Astroturf.” Actress Janeane Garofalo told MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann that the protestors were just ignorant bigots. “They have no idea what the Boston Tea party was about,” she said. “They don’t know their history at all. It’s about hating a black man in the White House. …This is racism straight up…”

Amazing. The Left will tolerate naked men marching in homosexual “pride” parades and illegal aliens publicly mocking our immigration laws with mass protests in the streets. Heck, they’ll even bend over backwards to make sure the terrorist thugs in GITMO are afforded top-notch lawyers and all the rights and benefits of the very nation those thugs are trying to destroy.

But the Left has no tolerance whatsoever for men and women who don’t want a massive government debt to destroy their retirement and their children’s future standard of living. By the way, the Tea Party movement isn’t over. Our friends at the American Family Association are sponsoring more than 450 Tea Parties on July 4th. (Click here to learn more.)

I know this will come as a total shock to Ms. Garofalo and Mr. Olbermann, but conservatives are not a bunch of know-nothing racists. They do know what they are talking about. In fact, they know more than liberals! The latest Pew Research Center News IQ survey polled 1,000 adults nationwide on 12 issues that made headlines recently. Seven questions were related to economic news, and five questions were about politics or foreign policy. After analyzing the results, Pew reported, “Republicans received higher average scores on the quiz than both Democrats and independents.”

Abraham Lincoln once said, “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.” I hope Ms. Garofalo will consider following that advice the next time she is interviewed.

“Beauty & The Beast”

That’s how today’s Washington Times brilliantly describes the Miss USA debacle. As you know, Miss California was asked a question from Perez Hilton (a homosexual activist and one of the Miss USA judges) about same-sex “marriage.” Miss California said that she believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. That was her opinion, the stated public opinion of President Obama, the opinion of the voters of California whom she was representing, and, according to the latest CBS News Poll, about 67% of the American people.

But her answer cost Carrie Prejean the crown and earned her the scorn and derision of Mr. Hilton and the ever-so-tolerant Left. After the show, Hilton posted a bitter, profanity-laced rant on his website calling Miss California a “dumb b—h.” Other organizers denounced her remarks and expressed their disappointment. Clearly, Christian values are meant to kept in the closet at the Miss USA pageant.

Last night, Prejean stood before a more receptive audience and received a standing ovation as one of the announcers at the Dove Awards. Throughout it all, Carrie Prejean has demonstrated grace and compassion. Of Perez Hilton, she said, “I can only say to him that I will be praying for him. I feel sorry for him.”

Donald Trump, who owns the rights to Miss USA, told Fox News that he felt the question was loaded, and that most of the comments the organization has received were heavily in favor of Miss Prejean. (If you would like to share your thoughts with the Miss USA organization, click here.)

Washington Needs Balance

For the second week in a row, pollster Scott Rasmussen finds that voters are evenly divided regarding which party they think should control Congress after the 2010 elections. Republicans and Democrats are tied at 39% each. No doubt many Americans have been appalled by many of the actions this leftwing administration and the Democrat-dominated Congress have undertaken. There’s certainly a lot to be concerned about – from massive government spending and bailouts to taxpayer funding of abortion to gutting our national security to socialized health care and tremendous tax hikes on energy.

The last time Democrats won total control of government was 1992, after the election of Bill Clinton. Two years later, Republicans won a historic victory, capturing 54 House seats and eight Senate seats. It’s too early to make sweeping predictions about what will happen at the ballot box 19 months from now, but political observer Charlie Cook notes that voters are getting anxious about the lack of balance in Washington.

Cook writes that he asked registered voters in a recent poll whether they felt we should maintain a Democrat majority in Congress to support President Obama or elect a Republican majority to balance President Obama. Forty-one percent of voters said it was important to elect a Democrat Congress to support President Obama’s agenda. But 48% of voters said it was important to elect a Republican Congress as a check against liberal excesses.

Prosecute Pelosi

In my Human Events column this week, I challenge President Obama to demonstrate his commitment to bi-partisanship by prosecuting Nancy Pelosi for her knowledge of, and subsequent lack of action on, the alleged “torture” of Al Qaeda suspects. End Of Day Report 04 23 09

From: Gary L. Bauer

“Go ahead. Make My Day!”

There’s a saying in Washington that no good deed goes unpunished. Members of the Bush Administration who made the tough decisions that defended our security and saved American lives may soon find out just how true that saying is. The radical Left is on a McCarthyite witch hunt to criminalize the policies of the past administration and throw conservatives in jail.

Spurred by MoveOn.org and the radical “nutroots,” leftwing members of Congress, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are demanding the formation of so-called “truth commissions” to investigate the Bush Administration. For the most part, President Obama had resisted these demands. Last week it was announced that the administration would not prosecute CIA officers and that the government would defend them in any U.S. or foreign court. Sunday, on ABC’s This Week, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel went further, saying that even “…those who devised the policy, he [President Obama] believes that they … should not be prosecuted either.”

But late Tuesday afternoon, President Obama contradicted Emanuel, saying, “with respect to those who formulated those legal decisions, I would say that is going to be more of a decision for the Attorney General.” The president’s statement wasn’t an empty threat. It seems likely we may have show trials of former Bush Administration officials. Conservatives in Congress should respond by saying, “Go ahead. Make my day!” If the political Left wants to have a public debate about what is appropriate to do when this nation is faced with a potential terrorist attack, conservatives can and will win that debate.

Not only do I instinctively believe that, but pollster Scott Rasmussen has quantified it in a poll released this morning. He found that 58% of voters believe that Obama’s release of the CIA memos damaged national security, while only 28% felt it was a good thing to do. That’s a 30-point gap against Obama. And on the question of investigating Bush Administration officials, the numbers are identical – 58% of voters are opposed and only 28% want more investigations. That 28% is the hardcore, MoveOn.org leftwing base that Obama is pandering to.

If they really want to start this witch hunt, then let’s begin with Nancy Pelosi. On December 10, 2007, I reported on a breaking Washington Post story that congressional leaders of both parties were first briefed by the CIA on the interrogation techniques, including waterboarding, in 2002. Nancy Pelosi was among them. Today’s Washington Times reports that the CIA has provided “more than 30” briefings to key members of Congress between 2002 and 2006. One official familiar with the 2002 briefing said, “…there was no objecting, no hand-wringing. The attitude was, ‘We don’t care what you do to those guys as long as you get the information you need to protect the American people.’”

That recollection was reaffirmed by Porter Goss, who served as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee from 1997 to 2004 and then as CIA director until 2006. Goss said, “Among those being briefed, there was a pretty full understanding of what the CIA was doing. And the reaction in the room was not just approval, but encouragement.”

I’m glad to know that our congressional leaders encouraged the intelligence community to get the information needed to protect the American people in 2002. But if the Obama Administration and congressional leaders are any less enthusiastic about defending our country today, then I think they have an obligation to explain their change of heart to the American people. The fact that they are complaining now, seven years after they first learned of the “torture,” is proof of the petty and vindictive behavior of the radical Left.

By the way, we waterboard some of our own soldiers as part of their training. If that is now torture, our soldiers should sue the Obama Administration since we have done to them what we evidently cannot do to the terrorists. The Left tried to emasculate our military and gut our national security after Vietnam, leading to the emergence of Ronald Reagan and a national consensus that peace comes through strength, not appeasement.

Fire Janet!

Janet Napolitano needs to go. The former governor of Arizona was reportedly selected by President Obama to be Secretary of Homeland Security for her first-hand knowledge of border issues. Instead, she appears to be just another leftwing ideologue who doesn’t bother with the facts.

First she labeled people who are pro-life and support smaller government as extremists and potential domestic terrorists. She also insulted our veterans by suggesting that men and women who voluntarily risk their lives for our country might be extremists.

Now she has insulted our friends in Canada by saying the 9/11 hijackers got into this country by crossing our northern border. She made that statement during an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation when asked to explain another recent comment she made comparing the Canadian border with the Mexican border.

In addition to being wrong about 9/11, she said on CNN recently that “crossing the border is not a crime per se.” Our friends at the Heritage Foundation were quick to remind the Secretary of Homeland Security what the law actually says: “Section 8, Title 1325 of the U.S. code clearly states that those who enter the U.S. illegally are committing a crime,” which is punishable by a fine and six months in prison on the first offense and up to two years for subsequent offenses.

Shouldn’t basic knowledge of our immigration laws be a requirement for confirmation? Then again, we have a tax cheat at Treasury running the IRS! And what does that say about our “brilliant” president and his team? In Napolitano, they have once again made an appointment, based on ideology, and it is coming back to haunt them and damage our country. Secretary Napolitano should resign now.
