“Cap And Tax” Is Coming
Democrats on Capitol Hill are set to unveil a massive new tax today that will hit the entire American economy and every single consumer. The legislation would create a “cap and trade” scheme for carbon dioxide emissions. In the process it would impose tremendous costs on businesses, especially utility companies, and those costs would be passed along to you. Everyone would pay this new tax. Turn on a light switch, and you will pay. Put gas in your car and you will pay.
President Obama’s budget assumes the Democrats’ “cap and tax” scheme will raise $650 billion in new “climate revenue.” (That’s right – climate revenue. You have to pay this new tax for the good of the planet.) But privately, White House aides have told Capitol Hill staffers that “cap and tax” could tax as much as $2 trillion dollars out of the economy!
With many economists are predicting that this recession will last months, if not well into next year, and unemployment reaching double digits, why are Democrats pushing what has been called “the largest tax increase in American history”?
Here’s one reason. The United Nations is gearing up for the sequel to the Kyoto protocol – a global warming treaty that the Bush Administration wisely refused to sign. “Kyoto II” has been scheduled to take place at a conference this December in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Obama Administration is fully supportive of its agenda.
Fox News analyzed the “cap and trade” plan being floated at the United Nations in advance of the Copenhagen conference. Here’s an excerpt:
“A United Nations document on ‘climate change’ that will be distributed to a major environmental conclave next week envisions a huge reordering of the world economy, likely involving trillions of dollars in wealth transfer, millions of job losses and gains, new taxes, industrial relocations, new tariffs and subsidies, and complicated payments for greenhouse gas abatement schemes and carbon taxes — all under the supervision of the world body.”
Trillions of dollars in wealth transfer. Millions of job losses. New taxes, new tariffs, more government subsidies. This is global socialism, my friends, done in the name of combating “global warming.” And Obama and congressional Democrats are laying the foundations for it right now in our nation’s capital.
TAKE ACTION: Tell your elected representatives in Congress to oppose Barack Obama’s outrageous $3.6 trillion budget. Not only is it the most fiscally irresponsible budget in history (the Congressional Budget Office estimated it would add $10 trillion to the national debt!), but it assumes hundreds of billions of dollars in higher taxes generated by a global warming “cap and tax” scheme.

Warning From Israel
President Obama landed in England today for important meetings with G20 leaders. The meetings could be tough – Europe is resisting pressure from the White House to follow our lead and spend hundreds of billions of additional dollars. But as important as the London meeting is, the bigger news may be coming out of Israel today, where Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in as Prime Minister.
As he was being sworn in, an interview Netanyahu gave a few weeks ago was released by Atlantic Magazine. In it, the Israeli prime minister makes it clear that he believes a nuclear-armed Iran would be a disaster, not only for Israel but also for the United States and the world.
Using blunt language, Netanyahu asserted, “You don’t want a messianic apocalyptic cult controlling atomic bombs. When the wide-eyed believer gets hold of the reins of power and the weapons of mass death, then the entire world should start worrying, and that is what is happening in Iran.”
He’s right. Is Obama listening?
No More “War On Terror”
Today’s Wall Street Journal reports that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is no longer using the phrase “global war on terror.” In fact, according to Hillary the entire administration has stopped using the phrase. Well, if the global war on terror has come to an end, Baitullah Mehsud evidently didn’t get the memo.
Fox News reports that Mehsud, the Taliban commander in Pakistan, is planning “an attack in Washington that will amaze everyone in the world.” Mehsud reportedly identified the White House as a target. Terrorism experts insist Mehsud’s warning should not be taken lightly. He was connected to the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and a bombing that killed scores of people in Islamabad last year. There is a $5 million bounty on his head, but Mehsud isn’t worried. He told the Associated Press, “I wish to die and embrace martyrdom.”
I’ve never been a fan of the phrase “war on terror” because it doesn’t identify the enemy responsible for the “man-caused disasters,” (aka “terrorism”) that our new Secretary of Homeland Security now refers to. But I am far less enthusiastic about the administration’s repeated attempts to be politically correct and inoffensive to our Islamofascist enemy. Appeasement doesn’t work, and words don’t win wars.
GOP Looking Up
As politicians across the country grapple with the nation’s fiscal crisis, Democrats are resorting to the one thing they know best – raising taxes. As a result, polls show that the GOP could be poised for significant victories in key state races this year and next.
Two states will elect governors this year – New Jersey and Virginia. The Republican candidates in both states are currently leading in the polls. In Massachusetts, where the nation’s only black governor faces reelection next year, one recent poll found that only 34% of voters believe Gov. Deval Patrick (D) deserves reelection. In Michigan, where the unemployment rate is above 10%, the Democrat lieutenant governor is losing in hypothetical matchups against all potential Republican challengers.
What about Congress? A recent poll by National Public Radio found Republicans and Democrats tied in a generic ballot test for control of Congress. Pollster Scott Rasmussen finds that 60% of voters have an “unfavorable view” of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, including 42% who view her “very unfavorably.”
And because of his massive spending programs and $3.6 trillion budget, a Rasmussen poll last week found that 66% of voters now believe Obama will raise taxes on the middle class. And they’re right. Obama’s carbon “cap and tax” scheme will raise taxes on everyone!
Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are reminding the American people why they rejected total Democrat dominance of government in 1994. We will be doing everything we can to make sure that the 2010 elections turn out the same way!
