Lindsey v. Mickey

This week saw two episodes that neatly capture the decline of our nation. U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn told a reporter that if she wins a medal in the upcoming Olympics set to start in February, she won’t visit the White House, as medal winners traditionally do. She said she hopes to represent “the people of the United States” in the Olympics, not “the president.”

I understand that when Olympians don the red, white and blue or visit the White House, they’re representing and honoring America, not the president. Still, this was a gratuitous shot at President Trump. We’ve seen numerous other athletes and championship teams refuse to attend White House ceremonies under President Trump. And many NFL players have clashed with Trump over their refusal to stand for the National Anthem.

Vonn, who is in her early 30s, is a perfect representative of the Millennial Generation that seems to believe history started yesterday and has a hard time separating their personal views of the president with the love and respect they should feel for their country. Vonn is hardly alone among her contemporaries. As I recently wrote in a Thanksgiving op-ed for the Washington Examiner, Patriotism is on the wane with more than one-third of millennials saying they are “not very” patriotic.

Meanwhile, yesterday on the 76th anniversary of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, President Trump signed a proclamation honoring National Pearl Harbor Day. Trump welcomed to the White house six survivors of the attack.

One of Trump’s guests was Navy veteran Mickey Ganitch, who had football on his mind the morning of the attack. Ganitch had been assigned to the USS Pennsylvania at Pearl Harbor and was preparing to play the USS Arizona for the fleet championship that day.

He had his football uniform on and was about to leave for practice when “General Quarters” sounded throughout the ship. Instead of kneeling, Ganitch rushed to his battle station, the crow’s nest of the main mast of the ship. His ship got pummeled  by Japanese torpedoes, and one bomb missed Granitch by a mere 45 feet.

During the White House ceremony, Ganitch broke out into an impromptu rendition of “Remember Pearl Harbor!” The song is a tribute to the service members who lost their lives during the attack. Their sacrifice, and that of millions of other members of the military, is what Vonn and other athletes should be focused on when they consider whether or not to visit the White House.

Recently Americans celebrated Thanksgiving, a day Abraham Lincoln proclaimed would be dedicated to giving thanks and “praise to our Father who dwells in the Heavens.”

Gratitude doesn’t seem to come easily these days. Opinions polls show Americans are unhappy with our core institutions, our politicians, and the direction of our country.

We no longer even agree on what it means to be an American. Patriotism is on the wane as more than one-third of millennials say they are “not very” patriotic.  How sad.

Football used to be a welcome Thanksgiving Day ritual and a break from the stresses of everyday life. But now fans are forced to witness the spectacle of millionaire athletes demonstrating against national anthem, the flag, the police and the very meaning of America.

Are they grateful for anything this country has given them?

I know America isn’t perfect.  Our Founders knew that.  In fact, the preamble to the Constitution refers to the people and the government striving to form “a more perfect Union.”  But we do have much to be thankful for.

We are safer and more stable than most countries. Nobody starves from lack of resources in America, and fewer do worldwide than ever before, thanks in part to American charity and generosity. Many of our most prominent diseases are those of plenty, not of poverty.

If you are like most Americans, you are already in hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, which, sadly, has become overly commercialized. Many of us are guilty of thinking about what we are going to get.

Instead, we should delight in our blessings, and we can do so by stopping and reflecting on them. Science suggests that simply by recalling all that we have to be thankful for we can feel more grateful and grow emotionally and physically healthier.

In the days and weeks ahead, instead of focusing on the presents we might get, I hope we can focus on the presence of God and the great gift He gave to us. That is something for which I am eternally grateful.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

Amid the hustle and bustle of the season, we don’t want you to forget that today, December 7, 2017, marks the 76th anniversary of Japan’s attack on the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor.

The attack began America’s involvement in World War II. It is sad and dangerous that many young Americans are more interested in condemning their country, protesting the flag and second-guessing previous generations than they are in understanding what happened on this day 76 years ago and how each generation must defend liberty. This is a great time to speak to your children and grandchildren about what it took to win World War II.

Fewer and fewer men and women from the Greatest Generation are still alive. Thank them while you still can.

Islamist Threats In Jerusalem

The left is predicting that President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel will cause Islamic inspired violence against Americans.  But Islamic supremacists were attacking us, Israel and our other allies, Christians, Jews and even other Muslims for years before President Trump did the right thing on Jerusalem yesterday.

We have seen 9/11, beheadings, churches bombed, synagogues destroyed, Israeli women and children stabbed in the streets, young Europeans and Americans murdered at concerts, Christmas parties, nightclubs, rapes of “infidel” women, acid thrown in the faces of reformers, the list goes on and on.

Islamist apologists always have an excuse for the murderous violence.  It happened because someone touched a Koran, insulted Islam, made a movie, wrote an editorial, drew a cartoon of Mohammed, danced at a concert, celebrated Christmas, outlawed the veil, displayed the Star of David, touched foot on Muslim land, and of course, the most frequent excuse of all – supported Israel.

Anyone arguing that we should not do “x” because it will spark Islamic supremacist violence has already given up their freedom to the barbaric forces loose in the world.  President Trump was right to ignore those voices of weakness and surrender.

Justice Department Ready To Blow?

A few days ago the shocking news broke that Peter Strzok, deputy director of counterintelligence at the FBI, had been demoted because of evidence of left-wing political bias in his work.  Strzok led the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton and was on Robert Mueller’s team investigating Trump.

Now it is being reported that Bruce G. Ohr, a senior Justice Department official, has also been stripped of his post because of evidence that in the 2016 campaign he had contact with Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that was hired by Hillary Clinton’s campaign to hurt Trump.

This afternoon there are unconfirmed reports that the Inspector General’s office at Justice is investigating 27 officials for leaking sensitive information to the media.  Announcements about this investigation are expected at the end of 2017 or in early January 2018.  Stay tuned.

This Year In Jerusalem

It is hard to adequately express my happiness today.  Overcoming foreign threats and dissent within the U.S. government, President Trump today formally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and began the process of moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

I am proud of this courageous act by President Trump. Not only does it correct the absurdity of the U.S. not having a formal presence in the capital of its chief Middle East ally, but it also removes the ambiguity about America’s position on Jerusalem that has long hampered our foreign relations.

This decision also corrects a historical injustice. When the U.S. recognized Israel only minutes after its independence in 1948, it didn’t include formal recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. In officially recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, President Trump did what a dozen U.S. presidents refused to do.

It’s been more than 20 years since Congress passed a law that calls for the establishment of America’s embassy in Jerusalem. But every president since has signed a waiver twice a year that cites national security concerns for delaying the move. They did so even though all of them visited Jerusalem and conducted official business there.

Trump’s decision is being portrayed in much of the media as controversial because Palestinians see Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.  But Jerusalem has never been the capital of any nation other than Israel!  Arab leaders warned that the move could spark a new round of violence across the Middle East. Palestinian and other Islamic groups called for three days of “popular anger” to protest the decision.

But the Islamic supremacists are looking for any excuse to kill and destroy. They say the decision will put an end to the peace process. But the Palestinians have eliminated any chance at peace by walking away from every deal Israel has proposed including deals that divided Jerusalem.

Trump’s decision comes after eight years of betrayals of Israel by the Obama Administration. You will remember that late in his presidency, Obama stabbed Israel in the back by allowing a United Nations measure to pass that declared Israel’s presence in Jerusalem illegitimate. Trump’s bold decision remedies this injustice and makes it crystal clear to the world that the U.S. now stands firmly with its ally Israel.

President Trump’s decision fulfills a campaign promise. It also sends a powerful message that America will stand by its allies and that, unlike with previous administrations, if the U.S. says it will do something, its word is its bond.

A Monument To Faith

It’s the Christmas season and there’s a new museum opening just at the right time in Washington, D.C. – the Museum of the Bible.  If you are planning to come to our nation’s capital anytime soon, you have to find time to visit the new Museum of the Bible.

Of course, Washington’s movers and shakers don’t know quite how to handle the museum. Our liberal newspaper, the Washington Post, has run several articles taking shots at it.

While the D.C. crowd is hyperventilating, they might want to simply take a stroll around the city. They will discover the overwhelming evidence of the Bible’s influence on our government.

Take the U.S. Capitol Building.  In one hallway a famous line from America the Beautiful is on the wall.  It reads:  “America, God shed His grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.”

In the Capitol Building’s chapel, yes, there IS a chapel in the U.S. Capitol – there is a stained glass window depicting George Washington in prayer.

And speaking of George Washington, the Washington Monument which dominates the skyline of the city has on its capstone a Latin phrase – Laus Deo — meaning “Praise be to God.”

The Jefferson Memorial, honoring our nation’s third president, features this quote on the northeast portico:

“God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that His justice cannot sleep forever.”

At the Lincoln Memorial several of our 16th president’s most notable speeches are displayed.  One is Lincoln’s Second Inaugural address.  It’s only 703 words long, but Lincoln mentions God a dozen times and quotes the Bible twice.

A few miles away at the Supreme Court, where religious liberty has been under attack, the Bible ironically is on prominent display.  Images of Moses with the Ten Commandments adorn several parts of the building including the actual courtroom.  When the justices enter the chambers, a marshal announces, “God save the United States and this honorable court.”

My point is this:  The Museum of the Bible fits right into Washington, D.C., alongside of America’s historic record etched into the stones of Washington’s monuments.

How Deep Is The ‘Deep State’?

The news that a top FBI agent, involved in both the Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump investigations, is politically compromised is shocking.

The agent, Peter Strzok, was found to have sent text messages that expressed vehement anti-Trump views.  Strzok is not just any FBI agent.  The New York Times calls him “one of the most experienced and trusted FBI counterintelligence investigators.”  If that is true the U.S. is really in trouble.

Strzok LED the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email server in his role as the No. 2 official in the FBI’s counterintelligence division.  He then was added to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team of investigators going after Trump.  There was already concern that many of the lawyers on Mueller’s team are consistent donors to the Democrat Party.  Now we learn that a FBI career professional on the team is also an anti-Trump partisan.

Strzok was removed from the team this summer when his text messages were discovered.  When the House Intelligence Committee noticed his transfer this summer they asked the FBI to explain the circumstances.  The FBI has refused repeated requests for information.

Committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes is outraged by the stonewalling.  In a statement Saturday Nunes said, “By hiding from Congress, and from the American people, documented political bias by a key FBI head investigator for both the Russia collusion probe and the Clinton email investigation, the FBI and DOJ engaged in a willful attempt to thwart Congress’ constitutional oversight responsibility.”  Nunes is so upset that he is threatening contempt of Congress charges.  President Trump weighed in too, tweeting “Report: ‘ANTI-TRUMP FBI AGENT LED CLINTON EMAIL PROBE’  Now it all starts to make sense!”

This breaking story lends credence to the strong suspicion that deeply embedded political partisans throughout key government agencies are trying to nullify the 2016 presidential election.

ABC Blows It

Late on Friday ABC reporter Brian Ross erroneously reported that Donald Trump, while a candidate for president, instructed Michael Flynn to make contact with Russia. Seven hours later ABC was forced to correct the report and admit it was after the election, when Trump was president-elect. It is very common for an incoming administration to make contact with foreign governments. Doing so is not illegal.

Ross’s story caused a 300-point drop in the stock market intraday. It also set off a round of celebrations by various media commentators who are hoping President Trump will be forced out of office.

A little later ABC announced Brian Ross would be suspended for four weeks without pay “effective immediately.”

This is not the first time Ross has made an egregious error in his reporting at the expense of conservatives. After the tragic shooting at a movie theater in Aurora Colorado in 2012, Ross reported that he had connected the shooter to a Tea Party website. The report was totally false, but it demonstrates how some in the media wanted to demonize the Tea Party movement.

Trump Boosts Moore

President Trump left no doubt this morning about his support for Judge Roy Moore’s election to the senate over liberal Doug Jones.

Trump tweeted: “Democrats refusal to give even one vote for massive Tax Cuts is why we need Republican Roy Moore to win in Alabama. We need his vote on stopping crime, illegal immigration, Border Wall, Military, Pro Life, V.A., Judges 2nd Amendment and more. No to Jones, a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet!”

New polls show a tight race in which turnout will make the difference.  We did our own poll of Campaign for Working Families supporters in Alabama and found that Roy Moore had solid support among conservatives.

Not Again?!

An unexpected ruling by the Senate parliamentarian last night threw a last-minute glitch into the GOP’s tax cut plans.  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was forced to suspend the “vote-a-rama” as the leadership scrambled to secure support from various holdouts, namely Senators Bob Corker (R-TN) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ).

Their concern is that government models suggest the plan adds too much to the deficit.  The problem is that government models are not very reliable.  There were massive tax increases under Obama, and especially in Obamacare, yet Obama ran record deficits year after year.

And if Corker and Flake are so concerned about deficits, the real problem is government spending.  But it is not “spending” when Americans get to keep more of their money.  It belongs to them.  Tax cuts are not welfare or government grants.  The people earned that money!  It does not belong to Washington.

Several proposed solutions being floated to earn their support don’t seem very smart to me, but the leadership understands that they must get this done.  They cannot afford another debacle like the failed attempt to repeal Obamacare.

Additional votes are expected later today.  We are monitoring the situation in the Senate as it develops.

Washington, D.C., and San Francisco are far-left cities.  And the verdicts this week in the cases involving Ahmed Abu Khattala, the mastermind of the Benghazi attacks, and Jose Garcia Zarate, Kate Steinle’s killer, reflect that sad reality.

In the case of Kate Steinle, the jury had several options to choose from, ranging from second degree murder to manslaughter.  Instead, this repeat offender who has crossed the border five times and committed seven prior felonies, was only convicted of illegal weapons possession.

Those who abetted Steinle’s murder are the left-wing politicians who advocate for open borders.  Once again, an American family is suffering while the illegal immigrant lobby and the Trump haters are celebrating.

While I am pleased to report that the Justice Department is considering additional charges based on illegal reentry, I urge the administration to bring a lawsuit based on violations of Kate Steinle’s civil rights.  And I urge the Senate to pass Kate’s Law immediately, so that previously deported illegal immigrants like Zarate who cross the border again are put in jail.

Flynn Charged

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has charged retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn on one count of perjury.  According to the indictment, Flynn allegedly misled the FBI during an interview.  Reports say Flynn will plead guilty at today’s hearing.

Hope For America

I am spending much of the day at the Museum of the Bible, meeting with Josh McDowell and hundreds of his friends.  I am also participating in a panel discussion, entitled “Hope For America,” and will be talking about morality and ethics in our culture today.

While I am honored to participate in this presentation at the Museum of the Bible, this town increasingly acts like the Bible belongs in a museum.  As you can imagine, recent headlines have given me a lot to talk about!

Debate Begins

Yesterday evening, the Senate voted along party lines (52-to-48) to begin debate on the tax cut and reform plan.  That kicked off a tradition known in Washington as “vote-a-rama,” in which dozens of amendments to tweak the bill will be voted on.

Some amendments will be substantive, many will be symbolic.  A final vote is expected late tonight or tomorrow.  Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Susan Collins (R-ME) have reportedly said they will support the bill, making Senate approval much more likely.

Here’s the bottom line:  We are one step closer to passing the first major tax reform in 30 years.  That would be a major victory for the Trump/Pence Administration and their GOP allies.

And the stock market certainly seems bullish on the prospects of a major tax cut.  The Dow shot up more than 100 points this morning, surging past 24,000 for the first time.  As a reminder, the Dow Jones closed at 18,332 on Election Day 2016.  That’s a pretty good run so far this year.

Dealing With Krazy Kim

As I mentioned in yesterday’s report, there are no good options for dealing with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.  While there is some debate about the extent of its influence, many observers think China certainly could do more to pressure Pyongyang — if it wanted to.  Some military experts, like my friend Frank Gaffney, think the communist government in Beijing is part of the problem.

But the North Korean regime is increasingly crossing red lines.  This week’s test of an inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of hitting Washington, D.C., was one.  Here’s another:  Reuters reported over the summer that there is significant evidence North Korea is supplying Syria with chemical weapons.

And while North Korea’s cooperation with Iran has been well-known for years, that cooperation has accelerated dramatically.  A number of “covert contacts” have set off alarm bells in the intelligence community.

Predictably, the media and their left-wing allies are blaming President Trump.  Just consider this Newsweek headline:  “Trump Creating A New Cold War? North Korea, Russia, Syria And Cuba Now Working Together Against The U.S.”

Those on the left who think we can contain or negotiate with North Korea and Iran do not understand a fundamental reality — evil is real.  Evil men do evil things.  You cannot negotiate with evil.  You can only defeat it.

Some argue that the regimes are acting out of self-preservation.  Really?  Threatening a second Holocaust by “wiping Israel off the map” or threatening to reduce America to ashes is not an act of self-preservation.  It is lunacy.

What the left apparently does not appreciate is that Kim is allied with the worst actors in the world, and they all have one thing in common — they are determined to bring down the West.

Trump Ends Appeasement

President Trump has taken yet another step toward ending Barack Obama’s appeasement of the radical Iranian regime.  The United States will no longer subsidize Iran’s nuclear program by buying its heavy water.  That statement seems absurd on its face, but that is exactly what the Obama Administration was doing.

The 2015 nuclear deal with Iran imposed limits on the amount of heavy water that Iran could produce.  Heavy water can be used in certain nuclear reactors to produce energy, and it can also be used to create nuclear weapons.  That is why the deal sought to limit Iran’s production of heavy water.  Fair enough.

Incredibly, however, the Obama Administration agreed to buy Iran’s excess heavy water.  Not only did that give Iran an incentive to over-produce, but it also provided the regime with access to U.S. currency, which undoubtedly ended up supporting terrorism.

Thankfully, President Trump has put an end to that Obama-era giveaway.

Shakeup At State?

Washington is buzzing with news that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson may be leaving.  According to the reports, the White House has a plan to replace Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo.  Taking Pompeo’s place at the CIA would be Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton.

Korea Crisis

North Korea’s latest ballistic missile test set off alarm bells around the world.  Secretary of Defense James Mattis said the missile’s trajectory suggests that the Stalinist regime is now capable of hitting targets “everywhere in the world,” including every major U.S. city.

Sadly, President Trump’s options are limited.  Past efforts by other presidents aimed at appeasing North Korea have failed spectacularly.

So we are left with military action to take out Kim’s missile facilities or living in a world where this tyrant extorts and blackmails us and our allies in the region.  The latter option inevitably results in those allies — Japan and South Korea — developing their own nuclear weapons.

Here’s something else to keep in mind:  This is not the result of any failure by Donald Trump.  North Korea’s missile program did not make some great, sudden leap on Inauguration Day 2017.

This cancer dates back to the Clinton Administration, and is the product of a failed American foreign policy establishment.  Unfortunately, its influence extended through several administrations, and grew dramatically during the past eight years when Obama and his allies were busy apologizing for America and gutting our missile defense systems.

That is what put us in this position today.

Former Obama officials who regularly go on TV to wag their fingers at Donald Trump should be outed as the default architects of North Korea’s nuclear program.  They have zero credibility, and should be laughed out of the TV studios they are sitting in.

A Good Day

On the domestic front, yesterday was one of Donald Trump’s best days so far in his presidency.  First, the president met with Republican senators to promote tax cuts and, by all accounts, the prevailing mood was one of optimism.  Many senators commented on how engaged the president is.

Later in the afternoon, the Senate Budget Committee approved the tax reform bill, and that sent the stock market soaring to yet another record high.  (By the way, the president got even more good economic news today when third quarter growth was revised upward from 3% to 3.3%.)

Then a federal judge shocked the left when he blocked an attempt by an Obama holdover to seize control of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.  Leandra English, the deputy director, claimed that she — not the president’s nominee — was in charge after Obama’s director, Richard Cordray, stepped down last week.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), two apparently sensitive souls, announced that they were so troubled by one of the president’s morning tweets that they were refusing to attend a White House meeting about avoiding a year-end government shutdown.

That enabled the president to have one of the most successful photo-ops of his administration.  The president was sitting at a table with Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell and two empty chairs labeled “Schumer” and “Pelosi.”

It’s important to understand what set this off.  Here’s what the president tweeted yesterday morning:

“Meeting with ‘Chuck and Nancy’ today about keeping government open and working. Problem is they want illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked, are weak on Crime and want to substantially RAISE Taxes.  I don’t see a deal!”

Frankly, the president is right.

Remember this if the government shuts down in a couple of weeks.  Share this report with your friends and family members so they can see through the left-wing media’s spin.

It won’t be Donald Trump and the Republicans who shut down the government.  It will be the Democrats and their radical “amnesty first” demands.

Travesty Of Justice

Ahmed Abu Khattala, the man the Obama Administration said was the “mastermind” of the Benghazi attacks, was acquitted yesterday on a majority of terrorism charges, including the most serious charges of murder.  For the families of those killed in Benghazi, the suffering never stops.

How did the mastermind of the Benghazi attacks end up in a Washington, D.C., courtroom, afforded all the protections of the U.S. Constitution?  For that outrage, you can thank Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.

The same administration that routinely attacked our First and Second Amendment rights extended to an accused Islamic terrorist all the protections of our Constitution.  And in Washington, D.C., a jury was confused enough not to convict him.

When we capture a thug like Abu Khattala, there should be only two options we should consider:  He should be treated as an enemy combatant who belongs in Gitmo or he should be executed.  Reading his Miranda rights, giving him a lawyer and hoping a jury can sort it all out is disgusting.

Media Elites Reeling

Media elites are reeling today as three more “journalists” were fired in the wake of sexual assault allegations.  First came the breaking news that NBC veteran Matt Lauer was fired from the “Today” show.  Then word broke that a second executive at National Public Radiohad been fired.

But the most ironic of all has to be Garrison Keillor, who has spewed progressive politics from his perch at Minnesota Public Radio for decades.

Just yesterday Keillor published an opinion piece in the Washington Post entitled, “Al Franken Should Resign?  That’s Absurd.”

Around lunchtime today I read this Associated Press headline:  “Garrison Keillor Fired By Minnesota Public Radio Over Allegations Of Inappropriate Behavior.”

What a difference a day makes!

Speaking of progressive politics, ESPN announced today that is laying off 150 employees.  Last year, the network laid off 100 employees and 300 were let go the year before that.

Apparently the whole liberal/lefty thing isn’t such a good sports business model after all.  Commissioner Goodell, call your office!
