CNN’s Ambush

Last night, under the guise of a town hall debate on gun policy and school safety, CNN ambushed Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and National Rifle Association spokesperson Dana Loesch.  The crowd was obviously packed with gun control activists and the questions were scripted.

Rubio and Loesch were repeatedly harangued by the questioners.  They were called bad parents and compared to the murderer, Nikolas Cruz.  Jake Tapper, the so-called “moderator,” did little to rein in the mob.

One of the survivors of the Parkland school shooting, Colton Haab, refused to attend the town hall.  That was a real shame because that audience could have learned a lot from him.

As we previously reported, Haab is a member of the Junior ROTC program at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.  His training and quick thinking helped to save the lives of dozens of students.  But Haab backed out of last night’s event when CNN insisted he ask a scripted question instead of his own.

For Americans tuning in at home, there was something to be learned from that sorry spectacle.  It was a demonstration of the left’s true character, which is anything but tolerant.

Whenever the left says it wants a “national conversation” on issues like race and guns, it doesn’t mean a real conversation.  The left wants a national lecture where conservatives are told to sit down and shut up.

Sadly, what America witnessed last night on CNN is just a small example of what is happening in school classrooms and on college campuses every day.

One source of frustration in this debate is the left’s intentional use of false facts.  The much maligned AR-15 is not an “assault weapon” or an automatic weapon.  The federal government began heavily regulating automatic weapons, or what we think of as machine guns, in the 1930s.  The production of machine guns was banned in 1986.

An AR-15 is a semi-automatic weapon.  It fires only one round when you pull the trigger.  If you ban that, the next step is to ban most hunting rifles or firearms used for self-defense.

The most logical solution is greater security at our schools.  Limit the number of entry points and post armed guards.  Have you tried to walk into an airport or virtually any government building lately?  You can’t help but notice the obvious presence of metal detectors and security guards.

Yet, it is striking that the most logical solution is most vociferously opposed by the left.  Why is that?  Because it doesn’t advance the left’s agenda of repealing the Second Amendment and banning civilian fire arms.

In spite of CNN’s attempt to stack the deck at last night’s town hall, there is no national consensus on gun control.  The latest Rasmussen poll finds that Americans are not clamoring for more limits to our Second Amendment rights.

Asked what they thought the impact of stricter gun control laws would be, 39% of adults said that stricter gun control laws would decrease violent crime, 39% said they would make no difference, while 15% said they would increase violent crime.  Moreover, 58% of those surveyed expressed doubts about the government’s ability to fairly enforce gun laws.

The Assault On Faith

One of the most disturbing reactions to the Parkland school shooting has been the left’s intolerant and ugly assault on faith.  Sincere people who offered their prayers after this tragedy have been harassed and insulted.

It is no coincidence that so-called “progressives” are combining their attack on the Second Amendment with an attack on the First Amendment — two central pillars of American exceptionalism.

I watched one of the big student protests this week.  When one of the leaders yelled out, “Prayers don’t do anything to stop school shootings,” the kids roared their approval.

Of course, the teenagers buying into this sound bite sentimentality are wise 15 and 16 year-olds who really know how the world works.  Seriously, someone needs to tell that young man that he has no idea whether prayer works or not.

How could he possibly know how many school shootings have been prevented because millions of people are praying for the safety of our children?  How could he possibly know if any lives were spared last week because people were praying?

And does he really want to tell the parents who are burying their children now that their prayers are worthless?

Christians understand that we have free will and that we live in a fallen world.  Some people might use their free will to kill fellow students.  Some people will use their free will to save their fellow students during a school shooting.

Prayer cannot repeal free will.  God allows man to follow his own desires.  But I believe prayer works in ways that we do not fully comprehend on this Earth.  It also comforts and heals.

It is sad but telling that so many on the left feel it is necessary to attack the faith of millions of Americans after such tragedies.

Celebrity physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson mocked Christians with this tweet: “Evidence collected over many years, obtained from many locations, indicates that the power of Prayer is insufficient to stop bullets from killing school children.”

For those who worship at the altar of science, here is a fairly easy study to do:  Look at the shooters who have attacked American schools in recent decades.  Identify how many of them were Bible-believing Christians who prayed and how many were into dark, anti-religious secular, humanist philosophies.

I believe any fair study will find that what we ought to be asking is how we can get more of our children to believe in a loving God and spend more time praying.  I guarantee that the more our children embrace faith the fewer school shootings there will be.

Media Manipulation

The teenagers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, have gone through tremendous trauma.  We should continue to pray for them and their families.

President Trump held a listening session at the White House today with students, teachers and parents from Parkland, Newtown and Columbine.

Sadly, some of the teenagers who survived the terrible Parkland shooting are being exploited by the left and used to shut off debate.  As they barnstorm the talk shows and press lawmakers for more gun control, one of their oft-repeated lines is, “Do you love children or do you love guns?”

The answer is easy.  Of course, we love children.

That is why we want security guards with guns at our schools in order to protect them, just like we have guards at banks to protect other valuables.  And that is why we want the right to have firearms in our homes in this increasingly Godless society.

What astonishes me is that the left would dare to ask whether we love the Second Amendment more than our children.  They are the ones who clearly love their imaginary right of abortion more than they love the hundreds of thousands of innocent babies destroyed every year.

When they wipe the blood off their hands, I might be willing to talk about guns.  I might even give up my gun if they give up their abortions.

But whatever side of this debate they are on, a wise society does not allow 16 year-olds to dictate policy.

In addition, I am sure there must be teenagers in Parkland, Florida, who support the Second Amendment.  Presumably those enrolled in the Junior ROTC program support the Second Amendment.  But the media are not interested in giving those survivors a voice in this debate.

Polls show the country is narrowly divided when it comes to a major demand of the left — banning so-called “assault weapons.”  Yet listening to the media, it appears to be unanimous in Parkland.

Nunes Demands Answers

Rep. Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has launched “Phase 2” of his investigation into the Obama Administration’s abuse of our national intelligence agencies.  Nunes sent a letter to more than 20 current and former government officials demanding to know exactly what they knew about the infamous Steele dossier.

Fox News reports that former Obama CIA Director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former FBI Director James Comey are among the officials who received the Nunes letter.

Some officials have already made statements about the dossier either during congressional testimony or in public.  For example, Brennan has denied knowing anything about it.  Their responses to Nunes could trigger perjury charges or open up additional avenues of investigation.

We will keep you posted.

Pelosi’s Patriotism

Ronald Reagan once joked, “Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July, but Democrats believe every day is April 15th.”  Apparently, Nancy Pelosi isn’t laughing.  She lashed out again yesterday at President Trump’s tax cuts, calling them “unpatriotic.”

The left considers something patriotic not if it helps the country, but if it helps the government.  In Pelosi’s view, the tax cuts are taking away money from the government.  And that, in her view, is Armageddon.  She also dismissed the big bonuses millions of workers have received as “crumbs.”

The American people, however, see things a bit differently.  According to the latest New York Times poll, a majority of the country (51%) now supports Trump’s tax reform plan.  That’s up from 37% in December.  Even support among Democrats has more than doubled.

As more and more Americans see the benefits of bigger paychecks and bonuses, they realize the world isn’t ending and those “crumbs” are helping to pay bills.

Voters have a big choice ahead of them in 259 days.  If her party wins the mid-term elections, Pelosi has promised to repeal the Trump cuts.

Remember that in November!

Goodbye, Billy Graham

America’s pastor, Reverend Billy Graham, passed away this morning.  He was 99 years old.

Graham was among the modern world’s greatest evangelists.  He met with every American president since Harry Truman and led millions to faith in Jesus Christ.

Graham was best known for his Crusades, massive outdoor gatherings with tens of thousands of people from all walks of life.  Graham conducted more than 400 crusades in 185 countries.  His most famous crusade took place in New York City’s Madison Square Garden.  It ran for 16 weeks and was attended by more than two million people.

What a tremendous life, lived to the fullest in service to God!

President Ronald Reagan once said, “Billy Graham’s contribution to the well-being of mankind is literally immeasurable. Millions of lives across the globe have been enriched because of his good work.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., considered Graham a great friend, saying:  “Had it not been for the ministry of my good friend Dr. Billy Graham, my work in the Civil Rights Movement would not have been as successful as it has been.”

I know Billy Graham was incredibly proud of all of his children, including his son Franklin Graham, who continued his father’s ministry through Samaritan’s Purse and his leadership of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.  I am grateful that Franklin Graham continues to be a prophetic voice in America, warning of the dangers of radical Islam and calling our country back to God.

Speaking of his own death, Graham once said:

Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead.  Don’t you believe a word of it.  I shall be more alive than I am now.  I will just have changed my address.  I will have gone into the presence of God.”

Please join Carol and me in praying for the Graham family, and for a revival of faith across our country.

Another School Shooting

As you know by now, there was another horrific school shooting yesterday, this time in Parkland, Florida.  Seventeen people were killed.  Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected by the evil acts of this maniac.

As always happens after events like this, there is a lot of speculation.  I don’t want to repeat what is being stated over and over again in the media.

What is clear, however, is that the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, was a very troubled person.  He had been expelled repeatedly.  Students darkly joked that if anyone was going to shoot up the school it was him.

Family friends say he was taking medication for psychological issues.  His social media postings and the websites he visited were described as “very disturbing” and “gruesome.”

Once again, we are left grappling with the complexities of mental illness and what appropriate actions can be taken to make events like this less likely.

To me an obvious thing is for schools to have armed and trained security guards.  It is not unusual to see armed security guards at banks because we don’t want someone taking our money.  Aren’t our children more valuable?

Instead, we “protect” them with “Gun Free Zone” signs.

It makes absolutely no sense for our children’s safety to depend entirely on whether or not a maniac wakes up in the morning and decides to kill children in a “gun free zone.”

Guess what?  Once the killer steps onto the campus of that school, it is no longer a “gun free zone,” and the only armed individual is the criminal.

Why is this so controversial to the left?  Sadly, it is easier for a murderer to walk into a school with a gun than it is for a student to walk in with a Bible and attempt to give it away.

The default position of progressives is to attack the Second Amendment and the availability of guns.  Yet the percentage of households with guns has been declining for decades.  Fewer Americans hunt today than did several decades ago.  In fact, many schools used to have gun clubs on campus.  Yet school shootings were rare.

Logic suggests that something else explains this shocking trend.

Our Coarsening Culture

When a person has bad health, a lot of different things start going wrong.  Together those things often result in their death.

I would argue that the health of America’s culture and society has been declining day by day, year by year, decade by decade.  The combination of things contributing to that decline is coming together and results in what we are seeing today, like a typical weekend in Chicago.

To begin with, the exposure to graphic entertainment is one problem.  The extreme violence that is so readily available today in movies, video games and online has a desensitizing effect.

The bigger problem, in my view, has been the systematic campaign to purge Judeo-Christian values from our schools and our culture.

These values undergird our society.  It is not just that they teach the basic things a healthy society needs, it also teaches children that we are all made in the image of God, and that every child has dignity.

I was pleased to hear President Trump touch on this in his address to the nation when he said:

“We must also work together to create a culture in our country that embraces the dignity of life, that creates deep and meaningful human connections, and that turns classmates and colleagues into friends and neighbors.”

Today, our children are regularly taught that they are a cosmic accident, and that after millions of years of evolution we ended up as hairless apes.  They are taught that human life is disposable, that “unwanted pregnancies” can be easily aborted.

We have entertained a massive social experiment in the breakdown of the family to see if a society can raise good kids without fathers, or if mothers and fathers even matter at all.

Sadly, almost everything I have listed here is completely off limits for debate in our politically correct culture today.

It is ironic that there are entire organizations dedicated to ensuring that kids do not see the Ten Commandments in their school or in a park or on a courthouse wall.  This hostility to faith has gone so far that people are mocking Christians for praying for the victims, for suggesting that an imaginary god has any influence in our society.

I guarantee you that plenty of parents and kids in Parkland, Florida, were praying yesterday.

This morning on social media I expressed my sympathy and offered my prayers for the victims and their families, and immediately I was attacked.  My friends, do not allow these radical atheists to deter you from praying to the God who declared:

“I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”

Of Gangs & Garbage

I’m not a fan of street gangs and Senate gangs aren’t much better.  A new “Gang of 16” — which is laughably calling itself the “Common Sense Coalition” — is serving up the same garbage we have gotten in the past when it comes to immigration reform debates.

President Trump was very clear about his expectations.  He called for legislation that addresses the “four pillars” of the Grassley bill, based on a plan the White House outlined recently.

Predictably, the “Gang of 16” plan does not get close to what the president asked for.  In fact, Lindsey Graham even joked that it is more of a “two pillar plan.”

The Department of Homeland Security blasted the “gang of 16” plan this morning, saying its DACA expansion would allow illegal immigrants who are 42 years old “TODAY. . . to apply for DACA now — these are not children and haven’t been for some time.”

DHS summed up this so-called “commonsense plan” by saying it “would effectively make the United States a Sanctuary Nation where ignoring the rule of law is encouraged.”

This is the kind of massive amnesty I would expect from the left, and the White House threatened to veto the “gang of 16” bill.

Shame on the Republican senators involved in this sell out.  They are:  Alexander (R-TN), Collins (R-ME), Flake (R-AZ), Gardner (R-CO), Graham (R-SC), Isakson (R-GA), Murkowski (R-AK) and Rounds (R-SD).

Rice’s CYA Memo

Obama’s National Security Adviser Susan Rice is back in the news — and that’s never a good thing.  Rice was the Obama official tasked with lying on five Sunday talk shows about Benghazi.  We also know that Rice had a key role in spying on the Trump campaign.

Now senators investigating the Obama Administration’s campaign surveillance have uncovered a really weird memo Rice wrote to herself on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2017.  The memo “memorializes” a meeting about the Russian collusion investigation that took place in the Oval Office.

At that meeting were President Obama, Vice President Biden, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, FBI Director James Comey and Rice.  Here is a brief excerpt of Rice’s memo:

“President Obama began the conversation by stressing his continued commitment to ensuring that every aspect of this issue is handled by the Intelligence and law enforcement communities ‘by the book.’  The President stressed that he is not asking about, initiating or instructing anything from a law enforcement perspective. He reiterated that our law enforcement team needs to proceed as it normally would by the book.”

Shakespeare comes to mind: “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

Several things make this memo odd.  As Sen. Lindsey Graham explained on Fox News last night:

“Number one, why should [Obama] have to say [by the book] to begin with? Number two, what brought on that conversation on January the 5th?  They knew they were going to be out of power just in days. They sent an email trail showing the president was instructing everybody doing it by the book. And when you look at what happened, it was an abuse of power not by the book.”

It is not at all unusual for top government officials to “memorialize” a meeting — right after it takes place in order get key facts on paper, particularly if you are concerned about legal or political ramifications.

But as Sen. Graham noted this meeting took place on January 5th.  It is highly unusual to memorialize a meeting 15 days later.

So Donald Trump is just minutes away from walking into the White House, and Rice is frantically typing out a memo that reads like an alibi.  No, that’s not fishy at all.

Senators Charles Grassley and Lindsey Graham have sent Rice a list of detailed questions and they are demanding answers by next week.

Whether it’s Comey’s leaked memos to a friend, text messages about an “insurance policy,” super-secret FISA warrants based on campaign dirt, or an exodus of top officials leaving under a cloud of suspicion, what is emerging is a disturbing image of an outgoing administration doing everything it can to destroy the incoming administration.

Of course, anyone relying on the mainstream media for news has no idea about Rice’s memo.  Few outlets, other than Fox News, conservative talk radio and reports like this one, are mentioning it.  Most Americans know there’s a big deal about collusion with Russia, even though there is no evidence Donald Trump colluded with Russia.

About That Collusion. . .

Last week in Syria, Assad regime forces mounted a surprise attack against a base held by U.S. special operations troops and our Kurdish allies.  The U.S. called in artillery and air strikes and, according to various reports, more than 200 of the attackers were killed.

We are now learning that the Syrian attackers were largely Russian mercenaries.  U.S. forces did not hesitate to defend themselves.  Bloomberg described the engagement as “the deadliest clash” between Russia and the U.S. “since the Cold War.”

After eight years of Barack Obama allowing Russia to walk all over us, the “colluding” Donald Trump just gave Putin a black eye.

Obama’s Painter

Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama made a rare public appearance yesterday.  They were at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery for the unveiling of their official paintings.

The Obamas were “intimately involved” in the selection process for their painters.  They accepted recommendations from the Smithsonian and then personally interviewed the top contenders.  It is inconceivable that they could have such a thorough process and never considered the artists’ work.

Let’s put aside the issue of whether the artists did the Obamas a disservice in their paintings.  The Daily Caller notes that Kehinde Wiley, who painted former President Obama, is also known for portraits that depict black women holding the severed heads of white women.  “It’s sort of a play on the ‘kill whitey’ thing,” Wiley explained.

Always do the reverse test.  If George Bush had chosen an artist who painted white women holding the severed heads of black women, is there any doubt about the outrage that would have erupted?

After Kathy Griffin, I had hoped that we could at least agree that severed heads are never a good idea.

Good News

The federal Department of Education is no longer investigating local public school bathrooms.  Pressed by Washington Post reporters Monday, a spokeswoman confirmed that the department was not enforcing an Obama order that sought to push the radical transgender ideology into every public school across the country.

“Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, not gender identity,” Education Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Hill explained.  “In the case of bathrooms, however, longstanding regulations provide that separating facilities on the basis of sex is not a form of discrimination prohibited by Title IX.”

Wow!  The government is enforcing the law as it is written, not as some liberal bureaucrat wants it to be.  Imagine that!

In related news, President Trump is continuing to nominate conservative judges at a swift pace.  Yesterday, he announced his eleventh wave of nominations.  Unfortunately, Senate Democrats continue stalling their confirmation votes at every opportunity.

Go Green:  Sacrifice Your Children

What would you do to save the planet?  Apparently some people are so distraught over the condition of the environment that they’re considering making the ultimate sacrifice and remaining childless.

You can read more about the left’s ludicrous idea in my latest opinion piece at The Daily Caller.

Immigration Debate Begins

After securing passage of a budget deal that fully funds the Pentagon and keeps the government open, the Senate is now turning its attention to immigration reform.  According to The Hill, “Senators are predicting a free-for-all” debate.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said, “It sounds like Senator McConnell’s just going to . . . let people have at it. . .  It ought to be pretty fascinating.”  McConnell said last week that whichever side can produce 60 votes “wins.”

Democrats have made it clear in recent weeks that their number one priority is amnesty.  Meanwhile, the GOP is divided between the cheap labor business-wing establishment and border security conservatives.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) is introducing legislation modeled after President Trump’s compromise proposal — a path to citizenship for DACA recipients and those eligible for DACA protections in exchange for serious reforms to our current immigration system and an upfront commitment for major border security improvements.

Grassley’s bill is co-sponsored by Senators Cornyn (R-TX), Cotton (R-AR), Ernst (R-IA), Lankford (R-OK), Perdue (R-GA) and Tillis (R-NC).  Unfortunately, progressive leaders denounced the president’s plan, so it is hard to imagine enough Senate Democrats voting for it to pass.

We will keep you posted as the debate proceeds.

Israel vs. Iran

Tensions flared in the Middle East over the weekend after Iran sent an unmanned drone from Syria into Israeli airspace.  Israel responded by launching major airstrikes against Syrian air defense positions.  During one of the strikes, an Israeli F-16 was shot down.

Responding to Iran’s aggression, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said:

“I have been warning for some time about the dangers of Iran’s military entrenchment in Syria.  Iran seeks to use Syrian territory to attack Israel for its professed goal of destroying Israel.  This morning Iran brazenly violated Israel’s sovereignty. . .  And this demonstrates that our warnings were 100% correct.

“Israel holds Iran and its Syrian hosts responsible for today’s aggression.  We will continue to do whatever is necessary to protect our sovereignty and our security.”

Hopefully, this flare up will flare out.  But there is no doubt that a big part of the responsibility for what happened this weekend lies with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Israel is not surrounding Iran.  Iran has been methodically surrounding Israel.  It has been empowered to do so by a nuclear deal that Obama and Clinton considered one of their biggest accomplishments.

Sadly, that deal made no attempt to force Iran to change its behavior in the Middle East, while it ended tough sanctions and generated a huge windfall for Tehran’s massive military buildup.

The Obama/Biden/Clinton Administration made a strategic decision to side with Iran.  Obama talked of Iran becoming a “very successful regional power,” as if the Shiite Islamic Republic was the key to stability in the region.  At the same time, they were treating Israel like a second-class ally.

As Netanyahu stated, the ayatollah is not subtle about the regime’s goals.  He wants a second Holocaust and the “liberation” of all Israel.

We will see what happens next.  But many well-connected insiders we know in Israel have publicly warned that a war with Iran or its proxy Hezbollah will not be like the previous conflicts we have seen in Gaza, where Israel went to extraordinary lengths to avoid civilian casualties.

Such a war will be a war for survival, and Israel will use every tool at its disposal because the alternative to victory would be unthinkable.

All Hail Little Sis

The American media’s gushing coverage of Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, is pathetic.  Jong is leading the North Korean delegation at the Olympics in South Korea, and, apparently, U.S. journalists just can’t get enough of her.

Consider this headline from CNN:  “Kim Jong Un’s Sister Is Stealing The Show At The Winter Olympics.”  The only thing she has stolen is the food and future of the North Korean people.  Her family has turned the country into a prison where starvation is a daily fact of life.

The Washington Post described her as “The Ivanka Trump Of North Korea.”

The media’s hypocrisy is breathtaking.  Kim Yo Jong is not merely the dictator’s sister.  She is a leading regime official, serving as deputy director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department.  In other words, it is her job to manipulate the media, and our media elites are falling for it hook, line and sinker.

I hate to say this, but there is only one explanation for the mainstream media’s fawning coverage of Jong:  Anti-Americanism is now so rampant on the left that it will take virtually any foreign thug over America.  They hate Trump and Pence so much that they see North Korea as just the “resistance” with nukes.

Meanwhile, most Americans probably don’t know that Vice President Pence took Fred Warmbier, the father of Otto Warmbier, to the Olympic Games in South Korea.

The America press, which supposedly cares about freedom of speech and human rights, should roundly condemn Kim Yo Jong and stop cheerleading for the Stalinist regime.

Goodbye, Jeff

Yesterday evening, I received the shocking news that Jeff Bell, my friend of many years, passed away Saturday night.  Along with Frank Cannon, Jeff led the effort to draft me into the 2000 Republican presidential primaries, and served as a key adviser to my campaign.

While not a household name, Jeff was a tremendous force in conservative politics.  He served as a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan’s 1976 challenge against Gerald Ford.  Two years later, Bell challenged liberal Republican Senator Clifford Case in the New Jersey primary and won.  Unfortunately, he lost the general election to Democrat Bill Bradley.  He ran twice more, most recently in 2014.

While much of Jeff’s work was devoted to supply-side economics (he also worked on Jack Kemp’s 1988 presidential campaign), he was a man of deep faith and staunchly pro-life.

He understood better than most the deep connection the American people have with traditional conservative values.  And Jeff was ahead of his peers in recognizing the great divide that was emerging in America between populists and elitists.  He even wrote two books on the subject.

As I have read the tributes to Jeff appearing online, there is an emerging theme to which I can attest:  Jeff’s extraordinary kindness.  My friend Frank Cannon put it well, writing that Jeff will be remembered for “his passion for people . . . and his incredible mind, which was matched only by the size of his heart.”

Please join Carol and me in praying for Jeff’s wife, Rosalie, and their four children.

Obama Funded Terrorism

When Barack Obama said he wanted to reward Iran for signing a nuclear deal by lifting sanctions, we warned that doing so would lead to Iran spending more money on terrorism.  It wasn’t hard to figure out what the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism would do if it suddenly got a large windfall.  After all, money is fungible.

Unfortunately, Obama ignored the critics.  He got his nuclear deal, and the mullahs got billions of dollars.  In addition to lifting sanctions, the Obama Administration sent $1.7 billion in cash, stacked on wooden pallets, to Tehran via secret Swiss flights.

Obama hoped that this deal would “strengthen the hand of moderates” in Iran.  But, as it turns out, it did nothing to cause the ayatollah’s regime to reconsider its murderous ways.

According to a report this week by the Washington Timesthe U.S. government has, as many feared, traced some of this cash directly to Iran’s main terrorist proxy, Hezbollah, to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force and to Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Thankfully, the Trump Administration has slammed the brakes on Obama’s naive policies.  The president announced in January that his administration has “sanctioned nearly 100 individuals and entities involved with the Iranian regime’s ballistic missile program and its other illicit activities.”

President Trump is also demanding that Congress and our European allies address serious flaws in the 2015 nuclear deal or he will cancel it.

By the way, Iran is not interested in negotiating with the United States.  The Wall Street Journal reports that U.S. officials have tried four times to discuss the status of American hostages being held by the Islamic Republic.  According to the Journal, “Iran didn’t respond and . . . so far has refused to engage with U.S. officials.”

More Departures

In a recent report, we noted that several top FBI and Justice Department officials have left their respective agencies as the Russia collusion/Steele dossier scandal has unraveled.  And, indeed, the exodus is continuing.

Amid screaming headlines of shutdowns and budget deals, Politico quietly reported this news yesterday:  “Two More Officials Cited In FBI Texts Step Down.”

The federal bureaucracy is huge and people come and go all the time.  The timing of their resignations could be coincidental or there could be more going on behind the scenes, as this American Thinker article suggests.

Speaking of coincidences, check out this The Daily Caller column.  I am not one for conspiracy theories, but the connections between Fusion GPS, Christopher Steele, the Trump Tower meeting and a top Justice Department official are almost too remarkable to believe.

In spite of the media’s best efforts, the left is beginning to lose control of the Trump/Russia narrative.

Polling finds that a 55% of Americans, including 31% of Democrats, believe that the Obama Administration illegally spied on the Trump campaign.  In addition, 54% of Americans, including 44% of Democrats, support the appointment of a second special counsel to investigate the FBI and the Justice Department.

Meanwhile, anyone looking for real evidence of Russian collusion and meddling should take a close look at the Uranium One scandal.

Bonnie & Clyde Strike Again

We’re learning more about just how much Lisa Page and Peter Strzok really despised the values of heartland America and why they were so motivated to help Hillary Clinton.

In newly released text messages, Strzok and Page unload on pro-life Americans attending the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C.  Complaining about being stuck in traffic, Strzok writes:  “F—ing marchers making traffic problems.”

As bad as that was, Page replies:  “I truly hate these people.  No support for the woman who actually has to spend the rest of her life rearing this child, but we care about ‘life.’  A–holes.”

Of course, Washington, D.C., is a liberal town.  Everyone here has opinions.  You can be in the FBI and be pro-abortion.

But I don’t think it is too much to expect that our public servants be at least somewhat respectful of the hardworking men and women who pay their salaries.  This kind of bigoted elitism directed at fellow Americans should not be tolerated.

We know they also hated “hillbillies” and could “smell” conservatives at Walmart.  Clearly, these two are a class act, who embody all the grace and tolerance of the progressive crowd.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them on the cover of Time’s Valentine’s Day edition as “Couple of the Year.”

A Strange Strategy

CNN ran a story this week that struck me as really odd.  Evidently, a group of so-called “Dreamers” warned that if Congress doesn’t pass a massive amnesty soon, they will leave the country.

I can hear my father, Spike Bauer, saying, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!”

I don’t know who came up with this idea, but if you’re trying to convince someone not to throw you out of the country, threatening to leave seems like a strange strategy to me.

Meanwhile, we got a reminder recently of why it is so important to secure the border.  Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said last week, “We have about 70 terrorists a day that we see trying to get here through some method of transportation.”

Do the math — 70 x 7 is 490 attempts each week by terrorists to enter the country.  490 x 52 weeks is more than 25,000 attempts a year.

Border security is national security.  President Trump and congressional Republicans must continue to hammer that theme every single day until the wall is built.

Pelosi’s Grand Stand

Nancy Pelosi went to the House floor yesterday and spoke for eight hours demanding better treatment for our veterans.  Oh, wait, that wasn’t the subject.

She spoke for eight hours about the need to rebuild our inner cities, improve schools in minority neighborhoods and support the president’s infrastructure plan.  No, not those issues either.

She talked all day about the urgent need to defend religious liberty at home and Christian persecution overseas?  Nope.

No, Nancy Pelosi broke records with her historic grandstanding by demanding amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are willing to shut down the government and inconvenience American citizens in order to ensure that millions of illegal immigrants and (they hope) future Democrat voters are allowed to remain in the country.  That is the issue that compelled Nancy Pelosi to make history yesterday.

Just another reminder of the left’s priorities.

Betraying The Dream

One of the saddest things I saw during Pelosi’s marathon speech was when she was brought to tears talking about her young grandson’s birthday party.  According to Pelosi, after her grandson blew out the candles on his cake, he said he wished for “brown skin and brown eyes like Antonio,” his friend from Guatemala.

While Pelosi was deeply moved that her grandson wanted to look like a friend, I found her story troubling.  It is sad that her grandson wanted to have brown skin, and it would be sad if Antonio wanted to have white skin.

I thought the whole purpose of the Civil Rights movement was to move beyond the color of our skin and to focus instead on the content of our character.  The left’s obsession with skin color is betraying Reverend Martin Luther King’s dream of a truly colorblind society.

Pelosi should borrow some wisdom from an old song that Christian parents of all races used to sing to their children:  “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.  Red, brown. . . black and white, they are precious in His sight.”

That song introduced children not only to the love of God, but also to the profound idea that all human beings have potential, dignity and worth because they have been made in the image of God.

Well, I suppose there is no reason to worry too much.  Given the left’s eager embrace of cultural chaos, her grandson can choose to be a Guatemalan woman if he wants to!

About That Deal

Late yesterday, Senate leaders announced a deal to avoid a government shutdown.  While it includes a desperately needed boost to defense spending, it came with a big price.

The left refused to increase defense spending a single dollar unless domestic spending was also increased.  Many House conservatives are furious.  One lamented that fiscal hawks may be “an endangered species.”

But here’s the bigger point:  This deal once again demonstrates the left’s misplaced priorities.

Providing for the national defense is the number one priority of government.  But as Schumer proved last month and as Pelosi proved yesterday, it’s not the left’s number one priority.

Now, here’s some good news:  DACA, or amnesty for some illegal immigrants, was not part of the deal, and that is a win for conservatives.  Apparently, Sen. Schumer did not want to see “#SchumerShutdown” going viral again.

National Prayer Breakfast

This morning, President Trump addressed the 66th annual National Prayer Breakfast.  He gave a great speech about the importance of faith and religious freedom.  But before I share a few excerpts of his remarks with you, here’s how the Washington Post described it:

“President Trump delivered a God-and-country infused speech Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast, appealing to Americans who believe in Christian nationalism — the belief that God has a uniquely Christian purpose for the United States.”

Frankly, I’m not familiar with the term “Christian nationalism.”  It’s not in my every day vocabulary.  At the Post, which never misses an opportunity to bash Trump, any form of nationalism must be a bad thing.

Having said that, the notion that God had a uniquely Christian purpose for our country pretty well sums up the views of our Founding Fathers, and we know how our media elites feel about them.

Speaking of our founders, the president honored them in his remarks this morning, underscoring America’s deep religious heritage.  He said:

“Each year, this event reminds us that faith is central to American life and to liberty.  Our founders invoked our Creator four times in the Declaration of Independence.  Our currency declares, ‘In God We Trust.’  And we place our hands on our hearts as we recite the Pledge of Allegiance and proclaim we are ‘One Nation Under God.’

“Our rights are not given to us by man; our rights come from our Creator. . .  That is why the words ‘Praise be to God’ are etched atop the Washington Monument, and those same words are etched into the hearts of our people.

“So today, we praise God for how truly blessed we are to be American. . .  Throughout our history, we see the story of God’s providence. . . We see the Lord’s grace in the service members who risk their lives for our freedom.  We see it in the teachers who work tirelessly for their students, and the police who sacrifice for our communities — and sacrifice they do.

“And we see the Lord’s grace in the moms and dads who work two and three jobs to give their children the chance for a better and much more prosperous and happier life.”

What a tribute to faith, family and freedom!  If you missed the president’s remarks, I encourage you to watch them here.

Another speaker at this morning’s prayer breakfast was Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.  Unfortunately for him, Wentz was unable to play in the Super Bowl due to an injury.  But the Eagles have a deep bench of faith.

Nick Foles, the backup quarterback who lead the team to victory in Super Bowl LII, is planning to become a pastor.  When asked for his reaction to their upset win Sunday, Coach Doug Pederson didn’t hesitate, saying, “I can only give the praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

In fact, several players have even been baptized in the team’s recovery pool and on the road in hotel pools.
