Hillary Trashes Trump

Hillary Clinton took her book tour overseas this weekend.  During an interview with the BBC, Clinton was asked about the Harvey Weinstein scandal and her relationship with the progressive megadonor.

At first, Clinton deflected, saying that Weinstein’s behavior was “just disgusting and the stories that have come out are just heartbreaking.”  Hillary added, “I really commend the women who have been willing to step forward now and tell their stories.”  Then, she went on the attack, saying:

“I think it’s important that we not just focus on him and . . . his behavior but that we recognize that this kind of behavior cannot be tolerated anywhere, whether it’s in entertainment, politics.  After all, we have someone admitting to be a sexual assaulter in the Oval Office.”

Correction, Hillary.  We HAD a president like that in the Oval Office and his name is Bill.  And let’s remember who led the charge to discredit and demonize the courageous women who stepped forward to tell the truth about Bill Clinton.  That was Hillary Rodham Clinton.

By the way, Hillary defended the NFL players who kneel during the national anthem.  Her comments led President Trump to jokingly beg Hillary to run again in 2020 so he could defeat her again.

Bergdahl Pleads Guilty

Speaking of remembering. . .  Do you remember Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl?  He pleaded guilty today to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.  Bergdahl admitted to abandoning his post in Afghanistan in 2009 on his own volition.

Five years later, Obama traded five leaders of the Taliban for Bergdahl, claiming that Bergdahl was a hero.  Obama celebrated this trade by bringing his parents to the White House.  National Security Advisor Susan Rice went on national TV and defended Bergdahl’s service as “honorable.”

When members of Bergdahl’s unit expressed outrage over the attention this deserter was getting, several liberal outlets attacked those real heroes, who stayed on the frontlines, because they were so invested in the Obama narrative of turning the deserter into a hero.

Bergdahl’s fate now rests with the military judge, Army Col. Jeffery R. Nance.  Bergdahl faces a maximum possible sentence of life in prison.

Russia Didn’t Steal The Election

When it comes to politics, Mark Penn is a smart guy.  He was Bill Clinton’s chief strategist during the 1996 campaign and a top adviser to Hillary’s 2000 Senate campaign as well as her 2008 presidential bid.  So he knows a thing or two about presidential politics.  And that’s why I want to share with you some of his observations about the 2016 campaign.

In an editorial in today’s Wall Street Journal, Penn writes that Russia didn’t buy the election with $100,000 of Facebook ads.  Here are some excerpts:

“Americans worried about Russia’s influence in the 2016 election have seized on a handful of Facebook ads—as though there weren’t also three 90-minute debates, two televised party conventions, and $2.4 billion spent on last year’s campaign. . .

“Facebook says 56% of the ads ran after the election, reducing the tally that could have influenced the result to about $44,000. . . Facebook also counted ads as early as June 2015. Assuming they were evenly spread and we want only those that ran the year of the election, that knocks it down to $13,000. . .

“I have 40 years of experience in politics, and this Russian ad buy, mostly after the election anyway, simply does not add up to a carefully targeted campaign to move voters.”

And speaking of Russia, the Wall Street Journal editorial board has its own column on the subject of Russia’s interference in the election.  The Journal notes that the House Intelligence Committee has issued several subpoenas to Fusion GPS, the liberal opposition research firm that produced the now infamous Steele dossier.

That dossier, a campaign opposition research document, was used by the FBI to launch an investigation into the Trump campaign.  Special Counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating the Trump Administration largely based on that document.

What most people don’t know is that Fusion GPS was also working with Russian agents lobbying in the United States at the same time it was producing the anti-Trump Steele dossier.

In other words, there is plenty of evidence of collusion — between Russia and the left-wing group Fusion GPS.  Yet it is Trump who is under investigation by a special counsel.

A Successful Summit

As one of the co-sponsors of the Values Voter Summit, I am happy to say that the 2017 event was a very successful summit.  It owes much of that success to the fact that President Trump spoke at the Summit, something no other sitting president, including George W. Bush, has done.

The summit is an annual gathering of men and women of faith who hold mainstream conservative views.  Yet Newsweek referred to the Summit as a “hate group.”  Yahoo ran a headline calling the Summit an “anti-LGBT hate group.”  How’s that for media bias?

In my remarks, I noted that the attacks on historical monuments did not start with statues of Robert E. Lee, but with the Ten Commandments years ago.  Now the left is going after monuments to Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington because the left is against the very idea of America.

I said the left was acting like “an American Taliban” because that’s what the Taliban does — it destroys monuments and erases the memory of civilizations that came before it.

Those remarks won me the honor of being the leading story on the far-left “Right Wing Watch” for much of the weekend.  They highlighted what they considered the most outrageous remarks of the Summit.  I take their outrage as a badge of honor!

If you missed my address to the 2017 Values Voter Summit, you can watch it here.

Respect

The left likes to portray President Trump as an ignorant buffoon.  It did the same thing to Ronald Reagan, who was often derided as “an amiable dunce.”  But at the end of the day, what matters most is not whether people like you, but whether they respect you.

In spite of all the negative press here at home and all the late night jokes, it seems many countries are coming to respect America more because they realize we have a serious leader in the White House.

The latest example came yesterday when Caitlin Coleman, her husband, Josh Boyle, and their children were rescued from the Taliban by Pakistani special forces.   They had been held as hostages since 2012.

During a speech yesterday in Pennsylvania, President Trump said this:

“Something happened today where a country that totally disrespected us called with some very, very important news.  And one of my generals came in, they said, ‘You know, I have to tell you, a year ago they would have never done that.’  . . .

“You’ll probably be hearing about it over the next few days.  But this is a country that did not respect us.  This is a country that respects us now.  The world is starting to respect us again.”

You may recall that several weeks ago, President Trump announced a new strategy for Afghanistan.  A major part of his address, largely overlooked by the media, was the president’s call for new approach to Pakistan.  President Trump said, “It is time for Pakistan to demonstrate its commitment to civilization, order, and to peace.”

Yesterday’s rescue of American hostages is a good start.

Lying Media

NBC News reported yesterday that President Trump this summer demanded “what amounted to a nearly tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.”  Top officials in the room “were surprised” by this demand.  NBC supposedly got this information from “three officials who were in the room.”

President Trump blasted the NBC report as “Pure fiction made up to demean,” to make him look like a warmongering idiot.  At a press conference yesterday, President Trump said, “Right now, we have so many nuclear weapons.  I want them in perfect condition, perfect shape. That’s the only thing I’ve ever discussed.”

Secretary of Defense James Mattis also condemned the NBC report as “absolutely false,” “erroneous” and “irresponsible.”

Chief of Staff John Kelly told the White House press corps this afternoon that the president has said repeatedly that it would be wonderful if the world could get rid of nuclear weapons.

By the way, Kelly also denied fake news reports that he was frustrated in his job and about to be fired.  He said that what frustrated him most was reading the fake news.  “It is astounding to me how much is misreported,” he said.  Kelly also told reporters to “develop some better sources.”

I am a staunch proponent of the First Amendment and free speech.  But big media should be held accountable.

Who were these sources — the three officials in the room?  Did they even exist?  The so-called “journalists” who produced this report have an obligation to defend their reporting or NBC should fire them.

Not a week goes by without major media outlets publishing totally false information.  There has to be some accountability somewhere.

Let me remind you that when former FBI Director James Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee, he said, “There have been many, many stories . . . about Russia that are dead wrong.”

The president has every right to criticize the left-wing fake news media when they lie about him and try to make him look like an idiot.  Sadly, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE)is attacking Trump for fighting back!

What is wrong with these GOP politicians?  Apparently, they have learned nothing from the 2016 elections.  Donald Trump defeated 16 of them and Hillary Clinton because conservative voters wanted a fighter!

We are sick and tired of weak-kneed politicians who care more about what media elites say about them than they do about actually advancing conservative values!

Lying Politicians

A major left-wing talking point on the president’s tax reform plan is that Republicans are lowering taxes on the rich while raising taxes on the poor.  Their argument goes like this:  Trump’s plan calls for lowering the top tax rate from 39.6% to 35% while increasing the bottom rate from 10% to 12%.

Here’s why this is false.  The top marginal rate has not yet been determined.  The president has said he is willing to keep a high top tax rate.  On the lower rate, Chuck Schumer and other progressives are counting on average Americans not getting into the details.

The first rate in the tax code is in fact a zero rate.  Due to the personal exemption, an individual pays no tax on the first $6,000 of income and a married couple pays no tax on the first $12,000 of income.  President Trump wants to double that.  So he is dramatically expanding the zero rate.

The left is suggesting that lower income people will be paying more under Trump’s plan, but that is simply a lie and they know it.

Know Your Base

As I wrote yesterday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is like a scrambling quarterback right now, desperately trying to avoid being tackled.  He allowed the Kaepernick protests to fester for over a year and he appeared oblivious to the outrage of fans.

Now he’s written a memo that appears to favor requiring players to stand for the national anthem.  But I sincerely doubt he has the courage to tell the players that they will face fines unless they stand.  We will have to see how this plays out.

But here’s the bottom line:  Donald Trump knew the fan base of the NFL better than the commissioner of the NFL — just like he knew the base of the Republican Party better than the professional consultants and politicians who run the Republican Party.  Trump really deserves the title “Billionaire Populist.”

SPLC vs. VVS

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) attacked the Values Voter Summit today in a full page Washington Post ad.  In fact, the SPLC has an entire website devoted to smearing the Summit and its co-sponsors, including yours truly.

Why?  Because we believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman.  We believe that children should not be introduced to “alternative lifestyles” in the schools at inappropriate ages.  We don’t think we should be importing bigotry into America and we believe that hateful Islamic supremacists should be kept out of the country.

The SPLC specifically highlighted this quote from one of my September 2015 End of Day reports:  “If the United States is going to take in 10,000 Syrian refugees, they should be Christians and we should make no apologies for that.”

Well, I’m not apologizing.  The SPLC is a left-wing hate group that is bigoted against Christians and traditional American values.  It has also had a rash of bad publicity lately.  (Herehere and here.)  Not surprisingly, the FBI and the Pentagon have severed ties with the radical group.

America First vs. Amnesty First

Over the weekend, President Trump issued a comprehensive list of 70 immigration priorities that put America’s security and America’s workers first.  Trump wants Congress to consider these priorities as part of any amnesty deal for DACA recipients.

Many of the items are familiar:  A border wall.  Ten thousand more border guards.  A crackdown on sanctuary cities and visa overstays.  An end to chain migration in favor of a new merit-based immigration system.  Some items are new.

I’m sure President Trump does not expect to get all 70 priorities included, but he is right to try.  As Barack Obama famously told congressional Republicans during the Obamacare debate, “I won.”  Well, Donald Trump won last year.  It’s time his priorities were reflected in the legislation under consideration on Capitol Hill.

But the prospects for compromise don’t look good.  Democrat leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi blasted the president’s list as “so far beyond what is reasonable.”

In an interview, Pelosi said that Trump’s list was “a complete non-starter,” adding, “There’s nothing in it to negotiate.”

The left’s position is “Amnesty First.”  And some progressives are threatening to shut down the government if they don’t get it.  How is that going to help DACA recipients?

I think Speaker Ryan should call Pelosi’s bluff.  Trump is willing to accommodate DACA recipients.  But liberals are so committed to open borders and the free flow of illegal immigrants — policies which undercut wages and our national security — that they appear willing to sacrifice these so-called “Dreamers” to advance their far-left agenda.

I think we can win any debate between America First and Amnesty First.

The Anthem War Continues

The NFL’s anthem war continued this weekend.  But there are signs that the left is losing ground.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones threatened to bench any player who disrespects the flag.  “If there is anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play,” Jones said. “Understand?  We will not.  If we are disrespecting the flag, then we will not play. Period.”

Jones wasn’t alone.  Steve Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins, has ordered his players to stand for the anthem, saying that Trump “changed that whole paradigm” of the debate.   “I think it’s incumbent upon the players today, because of how the public is looking at it, to really stand and really salute the flag,” Ross said.

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith even conceded that President Trump had “successfully hijacked this issue.  He’s turned it into an issue about patriotism. . .”  Smith added, “Trump has won this round.”

Indeed, he has.  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell now says that “everyone should stand for the national anthem.”  The Wall Street Journal reports that NFL owners are debating a change to league policies that would require all players to stand for the national anthem.

Memo to the GOP:  Don’t be afraid of these cultural issues.  Trump won because he was willing to fight!

But the really big “touchdown” this weekend was scored by Vice President Mike Pence, who went home to watch the Indianapolis Colts play the San Francisco 49ers.

As you know, the anthem protests started with Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco.  The 49ers have the largest group of players who have joined the movement that insists America is unworthy of being honored during the national anthem.

When the anthem was played at this weekend’s game, a dozen 49ers took a knee, while the vice president, his wife and top aides (including my son) stood at attention with their hands over their hearts.  When the anthem was over, Pence and the rest of his party all got up and walked out of the game in their own protest.

The vice president later tweeted, “I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National
Anthem.”

Of course, the left-wing talking heads, who hail Kaepernick and other players for their “bold protests,” said the vice president’s walkout was a “stunt.”

As you may know, the vice president’s son, Michael, serves in the Marines.  Just a few weeks ago, Vice President Pence was at Dover Air Force Base welcoming home the bodies of three real American heroes.  They weren’t called “heroes” because they were taking a knee on a football field.  No, these men thought so much of America that they volunteered to serve on the battlefield.  These heroes were killed by a Taliban jihadist.

If anyone wants to understand the division in America today, they don’t have to look any further than these two examples.  Our heroes are welcomed home with virtually no publicity, while “zeros” like Colin Kaepernick, in his Fidel Castro t-shirt and pig socks, receive fawning attention from America’s elites.

By the way, while our cultural elites are fretting about the First Amendment rights of “oppressed” football millionaires, the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division is warning that law enforcement officers are facing a growing risk of “premeditated, retaliatory lethal violence” from “black identity extremists.”

America desperately needs racial reconciliation.  But protesting the national anthem — the singing of which is meant to be a unifying act — has to be one of the worst possible ways to send a message.

Hollywood Hypocrisy

Harvey Weinstein was long seen as one of the most powerful men in Hollywood.  Not surprisingly, he was also a huge liberal donor.  According to one analysis, Weinstein donated or raised more than $2.3 million for progressive candidates and causes since 2000.

Weinstein was fired Sunday from the film company he co-founded in 2005 due to growing allegations of rampant sexual harassment.  Several prominent actresses — Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Rosanna Arquette — have come forward with shocking stories of abuse.  Three women have accused Weinstein of raping them.

According to various reports, Weinstein’s behavior was a poorly kept secret for decades.  Yet time after time, progressive politicians who railed against the so-called “war on women” eagerly solicited Weinstein for donations.

But now that this scandal has been exposed, of course Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and the Democrat National Committee will return all the money he gave them, right?   Waiting. . .  Waiting. . .  Waiting. . .

ISIS Doubles Down

ISIS is doubling down on its claim that Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock was “a soldier of the Islamic State.”  The latest edition of the Islamic State’s propaganda newsletter claims that Paddock converted six months ago.

There are reasons to be skeptical, however.  Paddock certainly does not fit the profile of your typical jihadist.  While rare, the group has made false claims in the past.  And, as it continues to lose ground in Iraq and Syria, it is increasingly desperate to maintain its relevance.

That said, the attack fits a pattern in other ways.  Las Vegas has been threatened repeatedly by terrorist groups, most recently in May of this year.

And while any event with large numbers of people will be a target for “mass causality” attacks, ISIS has carried out several attacks on concerts and music festivals.  (Herehere and here.)

The Gun Control Debate

Earlier this week, I noted that the left’s knee-jerk reaction would be to attack the Second Amendment.  A more appropriate response, in my opinion, would be to resuscitate the First Amendment and for America to turn back to God.

But since the left and its media allies are all-in on blaming “gun violence,” I think it is important to provide some context.

  • While the Las Vegas shooting has rightly seized the public’s attention, 60% of all gun deaths are suicides, not homicides.  Every death is a tragedy.  But beyond banning handguns, the left has no “gun control” solution that addresses the vast majority of cases of alleged “gun violence.”
  • When it comes to mass shootings, Chicago accounts for 10% of all incidents.  Nearly 2,900 people have been shot in Chicago so far this year.  Even the left-wing New York Times noted that the atrocity in Las Vegas occurs almost every month in Chicago.  Celebrities and progressive politicians rail against the NRA for defending the Second Amendment.  Why aren’t they leading protests in Chicago?
  • Honest liberals do admit that gun control isn’t the answer.  Unfortunately, some left-wing politicians have a problem with honesty.
  • For example, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said this week that it was “absurd” to say that “the background check proposal wouldn’t have stopped the killer in Las Vegas.”  Well, it wouldn’t have.  According to NBC NewsStephen Paddock passed “all required background checks.”  It is absurd that liberals lie to push their radical agenda.

By the way, when President Trump wanted tougher background checks, the left erupted in a fit of rage and said it was discriminatory.  Of course, that was when President Trump called for “extreme vetting” of individuals from countries infested with jihadism.

Perhaps the president should reissue his executive order and say that all immigrants and refugees coming into the country must undergo more severe background checks just in case they want to purchase a firearm.  The left would really be in a bind then!

A final point.  For many progressives, the real issue isn’t our constitutional rights.  It’s power.  But don’t take my word for it.

In response to the Las Vegas shooting, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman offered this advice to the left:

“There is only one remedy: Get power.  If you are as fed up as I am, then register someone to vote or run for office yourself or donate money. . .  This is about raw power, not persuasion.  And the first chance we have to change the balance of power is the 2018 midterm elections. . . Just get power.  Start now.”

Friedman isn’t right about much, but he’s right about one thing:  Elections have consequences.  If the left takes control of Congress in 2018, it won’t hesitate to use and abuse its power.  There will be severe consequences for religious liberty and the Second Amendment.

Help CWF fight the left.  Stand with me now.

“Calm Before The Storm”

During a meeting with top Pentagon officials at the White House last night, President Trump said that this was “the calm before the storm.”  That certainly got everyone’s attention!  Asked by reporters what he meant by that, Trump simply replied, “You’ll find out.”

I have no idea what the president means, but I doubt he was referring to the weather.

My guess is that it is part of an ongoing effort to wean North Korean leaders off of the idea that American presidents give in to extortion, which is what past presidents of both parties have done.

Trump is trying to send a signal to both North Korea and Iran:  “Don’t miscalculate because I’m not like other presidents.”

Speaking of Iran, President Trump is expected to announce next week that he will no longer certify Iran’s compliance with Barack Obama’s terrible nuclear deal.  Since that deal was announced, Iran’s support for terrorism and its belligerent actions in the Middle East have gotten worse, not better.

According to Politicothe White House is announcing plans “aimed at cracking down more forcefully” on Iran’s terrorist proxy Hezbollah.  Iran’s support for Hezbollah has increased dramatically since Obama’s nuclear deal lifted tough sanctions against the Iranian regime.

In June, the Justice Department charged Samer El Debek of New York and Ali Kourani of Michigan with conducting surveillance operations for Hezbollah.  Among the sites targeted were the U.S. and Israeli embassies in Panama, as well as “military and law enforcement facilities in New York City.”

And guess what?  It seems like President Trump’s tough stance is starting to payoff.  Reuters reports that Iran is suddenly open to talks about its ballistic missile program.

Peace through strength works!

Keeping Promises

The Trump Administration today fulfilled a key promise to values voters.  It formally rolled back Obamacare’s contraception mandate by expanding the existing exemption granted to churches to other faith-based institutions, businesses and non-profit organizations.

Just to clarify any fake news you may hear, Donald Trump did not ban birth control.  The new rules simply state that any organization claiming a religious or moral objection cannot be compelled by the government to provide free birth control.

Obamacare’s contraception mandate took a big hit in 2014 when Hobby Lobby and other closely-held private companies won a major case before the Supreme Court.  But a year later, the Obama Administration still refused to accommodate the Little Sisters of the Poor.  It was so committed to its radical pro-abortion agenda that it threatened to bankrupt Catholic nuns!

In addition, Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued guidance to all federal agencies instructing them to fully respect religious liberty.  Below is an excerpt from his memo:

“Religious liberty is a foundational principle of enduring importance in America, enshrined in our Constitution and other sources of federal law. . . Religious liberty is not merely a right to personal religious beliefs or even to worship in a sacred place. . .

“Except in the narrowest of circumstances, no one should be forced to choose between living out his or her faith and complying with the law.  Therefore, to the greatest extent practicable and permitted by law, religious observance should be reasonably accommodated in all government activity, including employment, contracting and programming.”

One Man’s Stand

I’d like to start today with some encouraging news.  So kudos to citizen Thomas Gunderson, who displayed tremendous strength and patriotism yesterday. Gunderson was among the hundreds of victims of the Las Vegas shooter.

He was hit in the leg and feared he might “bleed out” on the field.  But, according to NBC News, he was dragged to safety by a group of women “who said they were off-duty cops.”  One used her belt as a tourniquet for Gunderson’s leg.

During his visit to Las Vegas yesterday, President Trump stopped by the hospital where Gunderson is being treated.  And in spite of his injury, Gunderson insisted on standing when First Lady Melania Trump came into his room.

When President Trump walked in, he said, “Hey, this guy looks tough to me.”  Indeed!

Gunderson posted a video of their meeting on his Facebook page, along with these words:

“I will never lie down when the President of this great country comes to shake my hand!  There may be plenty of issues in this country but I will always respect my country, my president, and my flag.  Shot in the leg or not, I will stand to show my President the respect he deserves!”

God bless you, Mr. Gunderson!

Help & Leads

Here are some of the latest developments from the Las Vegas investigation:

  •  Stephen Paddock did not plan to die in his 32nd-floor hotel room.  Asked by reporters if there was any evidence that Paddock planned to escape the Mandalay Bay hotel, Sheriff Joe Lombardo answered, “Yes.  He was doing everything possible to see how he could escape.”
  • In addition to the extensive cache of weapons found in the room, police also discovered 50 pounds of explosive material and 1,600 rounds of ammunition in his car.
  • It has also been revealed that Paddock rented a room at another Las Vegas hotel that overlooked a music festival that ran the week before.  In July, Paddock also booked a hotel in Chicago that overlooked the Lollapalooza concert but never showed up.
  • Sheriff Lombardo also said that it is likely Paddock had help at some point.  “Maybe he’s a super guy.  You know, a super yahoo that was working out all this on his own,” Lombardo said. “But it would be hard for me to believe that.”
  • FBI special agent Aaron Rouse said yesterday, “We have multiple leads across the United States and all across the world. . .  A lot of these leads will go nowhere but we have to follow them.”

This brings me back to initial reports that a woman told concertgoers an hour before the attack that a lot of people were going to die.  Fox News reports that its sources in the Las Vegas law enforcement community say nothing has been ruled out.  Anything and everything remain under consideration.

Collusion Delusion Continues

Senators Richard Burr (R-NC) and Mark Warner (D-VA), the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee, briefed reporters yesterday about the progress of their ongoing investigation of Russian meddling in our elections.

One issue that has received a lot of media attention recently has been the revelation that Russia ran political ads on Facebook during the campaign.  MSNBC and other outlets have run sensational headlines like this:  “Russia-Linked Facebook Ads Reportedly Aimed For Swing States.”

Let me be clear:  I don’t want Russia or any country buying campaign ads and trying to influence our elections.  But there is some important context missing from much of the media’s reporting.  For example:

  • The total cost of all political ad spending in 2016 was approximately $9.8 billion.  The Russia online ad buy was just $100,000.
  • While the media are focusing on Michigan and Wisconsin — two states critical to Trump’s victory — the ads ran in more than a dozen states.  They ran in many non-competitive states, including blue states like California, Maryland and New York, and red states like Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas.
  • The ads were not intended to benefit a specific candidate.  A Facebook executive said the ads spanned “across the ideological spectrum.” Chairman Richard Burr said that the purpose of the advertising “seems to have been to create chaos in every group that they could possibly identify.”

In short, the idea that such a small and unfocused campaign had any impact on the 2016 election is laughable.

Should we guard against this?  Yes.  Foreign nations are not supposed to be involved in U.S. campaigns.  So it’s up to Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms to aggressively police their own practices.

But here’s something else we should do:  All candidates should be required to use common security practices when it comes to online fundraising in order to prevent foreign and fraudulent donations.  The Obama campaigns were notoriously lax in tracking foreign donations.  (Herehere and here.)

One final point from yesterday’s briefing by the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee:  Chairman Burr told reporters, “The committee continues to look into all evidence to see if there was any hint of collusion.”  In other words, after months of investigation, they haven’t found any collusion yet.

Las Vegas Update

The investigation into Sunday’s mass murder at a Las Vegas concert continues.  Here are some updates.

  • Marilou Danley, Stephen Paddock’s girlfriend, returned to the United States late last night.  She was in the Philippines when the shooting took place.
  • While Danley is reportedly cooperating with the FBI, law enforcement authorities have again identified her as “a person of interest.”  While it may not be relevant, several sources have noted that her previous husband was a far-left activist.
  • Sources in the Las Vegas police department have told Fox News that they are concerned about significant inconsistencies in the public statements made by Paddock’s brother.
  • Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo said yesterday that Paddock’s attack “was preplanned extensively.”  Lombardo said he was “absolutely” confident that investigators would determine Paddock’s motivation for the attack.
  • Lombardo also raised eyebrows when he said this:  “I want to understand the motivation. . . you know, did this person get radicalized unbeknownst to us?  And we want to identify that source.”

The FBI has seized a computer at Paddock’s home.  It will be thoroughly examined.  Paddock was a regular at casinos and hotels.  There are hundreds of hours of video tape that will be analyzed.  Bartenders and casino workers will be interviewed to see if they can shed any light on his character and interests.

All this is to say that it is still much too early to draw conclusions.  As a reminder, it took seven months for the government to indict Noor Salman, wife of the Orlando Pulse shooter, for her role in that attack.  And her trial is just getting started.  Conclusions in the Las Vegas case will take time.

“Gotta Serve Somebody”

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” –John 15:13

“Be alert and of sober mind.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”  — 1 Peter 5:8

He liked to “hang out” and had “no religious affiliation.” — Eric Paddock, describing his brother, Stephen, who murdered 59 people in Las Vegas.

“You may be an ambassador to England or France.  You may like to gamble, you may like to dance.  You may be the heavyweight champion of the world.  You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls.

“But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes. Indeed you’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord.  But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.” — Bob Dylan

Twenty-two thousand people in Las Vegas were happily listening to country music three nights ago as one man peered down at them from the 32nd floor of a hotel.  Stephen Paddock, who would soon murder 59 people and wound more than 500, had no interest in religion, according to family members.

Among the thousands in the crowd, there were no doubt people of strong faith and of no faith at all.  Before the night ended, everyone would “serve somebody.”

The killer served Satan, who scripture tells us prowls around like a lion looking to devour someone.  Many in the crowd chose to serve God.  They gave their lives to save others.

Seldom is the choice between good and evil as stark as it was that horrible night.  But every day, whether we are fully aware or not, we are all serving somebody.  We will either serve the Lamb or the prowling lion seeking to devour us.  In the end, the Lamb of God wins.

House Votes For Life

Late yesterday afternoon, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.  The bill, sponsored by my friend Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), prohibits late-term abortions, those performed at 20 weeks or later due to medical evidence indicating that babies at that stage in pregnancy can feel pain.

The bill passed on a vote of 237-to-189.  Two Republicans — Dent (PA) and Frelinghuysen (NJ) — voted against the bill.  Three Democrats — Cuellar (TX), Lipinski (IL) and Peterson (MN) — voted for the bill.

Sadly, the United States has some of the most lax abortion laws in the world.  We are among a very small number of nations — seven — that permit elective abortions after 20 weeks or well into the second trimester of pregnancy.

While the bill faces a much tougher road in the Senate, I can’t think of a more appropriate time to be debating this legislation.  When we are mourning 59 fellow Americans, the overwhelming majority of the party of Lincoln and Reagan voted to show mercy to unborn defenseless babies who can feel pain.

Meanwhile, the hypocrisy of the left was on full display.  Many progressives have politicized the shooting in Las Vegas.  Some have even gone so far as to suggest that Republicans have blood on their hands for supporting the Second Amendment.

Not-so-funny man Jimmy Kimmel said that Republicans should pray that God will forgive them for supporting the NRA.

I would suggest that many of these progressives should be standing up to NARAL — the National Abortion Rights Action League.  Perhaps they should be praying that God will forgive them for the carnage of thousands of innocent babies every day.

Bring Your Bible

In yesterday’s report, I wrote about the need for a revival in America, for our society to turn back to God and to seek His blessing.  I lamented how daily prayer and Bible readings had been purged from our public schools.

Well, here’s some “good news.”  Tomorrow is Bring Your Bible To School Day.  This annual event, sponsored by our friends at Focus On The Family, is voluntary and student led.  It is an opportunity for students to exercise their First Amendment rights and to share their faith with friends.

And in today’s culture, which is afflicted by so many negative images and influences, I can’t think of a better influence on our children than the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule.

After all, as Noah Webster, “the father of American scholarship and education,” once wrote:  “The Bible is the chief moral cause of all that is good and the best corrector of all that is evil in human society; the best book for regulating the . . . concerns of men.”

“Season of our Rejoicing!”

Carol and I wish all of our Jewish friends and supporters a blessed Sukkot as they celebrate God’s providence.

End Of Day Report

A Horrible Weekend

Many Americans woke up this morning to shocking news.  A gunman had opened fire on a country music festival in Las Vegas last night, killing at least 58 people.  Area hospitals reported that more than 500 people were treated for various injuries.

It was a horrible weekend for evil.  In addition to the shooting in Las Vegas, there were terrorist attacks in Canada and France.  ISIS is taking credit for the attacks in Marseille and Las Vegas, claiming that Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, a 64 year-old retired accountant, “converted to Islam a few months ago.”

According to Reuters, senior U.S. officials say there is no evidence connecting Paddock to any terrorist organization.  These attacks come just days after the latest audio recording of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was released.

Trump Addresses America

President Trump addressed the nation this morning and called the shooting in Las Vegas, “an act of pure evil.”  Below are some excerpts of his remarks:

“My fellow Americans, we are joined together today in sadness, shock, and grief.  Last night, a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. . . It was an act of pure evil. . .

“I want to thank the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and all of the first responders for their courageous efforts. . . The speed with which they acted is miraculous, and prevented further loss of life. . .

“To the families of the victims: We are praying for you and we are here for you, and we ask God to help see you through this very dark period.  Scripture teaches us, ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.’  We seek comfort in those words, for we know that God lives in the hearts of those who grieve. . .

“In moments of tragedy and horror, America comes together as one — and it always has.  We call upon the bonds that unite us — our faith, our family, and our shared values.  We call upon the bonds of citizenship, the ties of community, and the comfort of our common humanity. . .

“May God bless the souls of the lives that are lost.  May God give us the grace of healing.  And may God provide the grieving families with strength to carry on. . .”

Heroism Amid Chaos

In a country where hundreds of millionaire football players have been kneeling to protest police injustice, hundreds of police officers stood up and ran into the teeth of danger last night in Las Vegas.  Two off-duty police officers were killed and two on-duty officers were injured during the hail of bullets.

When officers reached Paddock’s room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  They also found “a cache of weapons.”  Reports indicate that Paddock checked into the room on September 28th, suggesting this attack was planned well in advance.

Just a few weeks ago, the Las Vegas Police Department was berated for alleged racism by Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett.  But after reviewing hundreds of videos, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo concluded that his officers acted appropriately.

If they kneel for anything, I strongly urge all NFL players to take a knee tonight in honor of our law enforcement officers.  Every day they risk their lives to protect and defend us.  They deserve our respect.

We are also learning about incredible stories of heroism amid the chaos.

One woman said she was there with her sister.  When the shooting started, a man threw himself on top them and stayed there for several minutes.  A financial advisor shielded his two kids.  “They’re 20.  I’m 53.  I’ve lived a good life,” he said.

One woman loaded victims into the back of her pickup truck and drove them to the hospital.  Hotel vans were commandeered to transport victims to area hospitals.

After Todd Blyleven got his friends out of the park, he ran back in and helped dozens more escape.  “I would hope that if me, or my family, was in a situation like that, that someone would come in and get me,” Blyleven said.

There are reports of people ripping off their shirts to bind wounds.  Individuals grabbed tables and broke down fences to use as stretchers, carrying bodies for blocks.  And hundreds lined up to donate blood this morning.

Many were not so fortunate.  Tennessee resident Sonny Melton, one of the first victims publicly identified, reportedly died protecting his wife.

Politicizing Tragedy

I would really like to focus this report on the facts of what took place in Las Vegas and the need to pray for the victims and their families.  But, unfortunately, there is such insanity on the left that I can’t ignore it.  Almost immediately, so-called “progressives” began to politicize the shooting, just as they do with every tragedy that happens in the country, including Hurricane Maria.

Hillary Clinton went on a tweet storm, posting among other things, “We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again.”  But Hillary is injecting politics herself with that statement.

Drexel University Professor George Ciccariello tweeted, “It’s the white supremacist patriarchy, stupid.”  Huh?

But the most outrageous reaction, so far, comes from a CBS legal executive.  Referring to the Sandy Hook shooting, Hayley Geftman-Gold posted the following on her Facebook page:

“If they wouldn’t do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs will ever do the right thing.  I’m actually not even sympathetic [because] country music fans often are Republican gun toters.”

That is an ignorant and disgusting statement to make while people are mourning their murdered family members.  Fire her, CBS!
